[FoxNews] They are scenes reminiscent of the Vietnam War and the Pacific Theater during World War II: U.S. soldiers, caked with mud and dripping wet from monsoon rains, quietly traversing thick jungle brush.
But instead of southeast Asia, these are the Hawaiian jungles northwest of Honolulu, where the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division is training some of our military’s bravest men and women to fight and survive in this unique terrain. It’s a less familiar sight for this generation’s soldiers, who have spent years patrolling the desert, mountain and urban landscapes of Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Understanding how to fight in the jungles is invaluable training to us right now," says First Sergeant George Feghali of the 25th Infantry Division, who is training at the 25th ID's Lighting Academy in Wahiawa on the island of Oahu.
"The way the army’s been focused for the past 16 years has been in desert urban environments," Feghali continues. "We’ve kind of gotten away from our roots."
The academy is the U.S. Army’s first jungle training school since the last one, based in Panama, closed in 1999. While no one here can talk military strategy or policy, Lightning Academy was established at a time when ISIS, Al Qaeda and other extremist groups are gaining traction in the Pacific region, specifically in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.
And while there are no jungles in North Korea, heightened tension created by Kim Jong Un’s nuclear ambitions is another reason why preparing soldiers for deployment outside of Iraq and Afghanistan is vital training.
While 70 percent of Lightning Academy's participants are from the 25th Infantry Divison, other military branches will train here also, as well as some in law enforcement agencies like the FBI.
Feghali and Ruiz are among a class of 75 soldiers who began the grueling three-week course in November. By Friday's graduation, they were two of just 33 to make it until the end.
"The goal is to be able to teach the skills so students survive, fight, [and] win in a jungle environment," says Geis. "Our job is to be ready to fight the next fight."

Want real jungle training? Panama, Fort Sherman, JOTC. Its a shame we closed that down. The jungle down there will kill you. Hopefully, these guys in Hawaii will reach back and get some history and learn from the previous JOTC.

Speaking as a survivor of that horror of a training program, all I can say about the Darien is that literally everything that walks, crawls, creeps, grows or swims in that region is either poisonous or it want to eat you. We slept in trees and ate snakes and grubs. We killed an Ocelot for dinner one day and found out that those big hairy tree spiders taste like crab.

Al-Masri, one of Jordan’s most prominent businessman, is the cousin of the billionaire Munib al-Masri, the wealthiest person in Paleostine.
He also founded the Paleostine Securities Exchange, and has managed investment companies and financial economic institutions across the Middle East and beyond, including Arab Bank.
Headquartered in Amman, Arab Bank is Jordan’s largest lender and functions as a major economic engine throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
Masri’s detention sent shockwaves across Jordan where Masri’s multibillion-dollar investments are a cornerstone of the economy and employ thousands.
Rooters reported that Masri had cancelled a dinner for friends and business associates that was planned for Tuesday upon his return to Jordan.

Marine Le Pen, leader of La Belle France’s far-right National Front, blamed the EU for getting "everything wrong."
"Because we love Europe, we accuse the EU of killing Europe," Le Pen told news hounds. She said parties like hers want to save Europe "by preserving nation-states."
"We are not xenophobes, we are opponents of the European Union," Le Pen said. "I think this is something we have in common, because the European Union is a disastrous organization which is leading our continent to destruction through dilution by drowning it in migrants colonists, by the negation of our respective countries, by the draining of our diversity."
Geert Wilders, founder of the Dutch anti-Islam Party for Freedom, followed suit.
"My party is convinced that the Netherlands would be better off outside the European Union, and it will be better for our economy, for our security," Wilders said.
Wilders singled out immigration and "Islamization" of Europe as the most pressing issues.
"We must have the courage, to introduce travel bans as President Trump has done in the United States," he said. "We must have the courage to restrict legal immigration instead of expanding it. We must have the courage to repatriate the illegal immigrants colonists."
Parties with anti-immigration platforms have been making gains at the polls in Europe, although Wilders and Le Pen both ran unsuccessfully this year for the top political posts in their countries.
More recently, Austria’s far-right Freedom Party became a partner in a new coalition government after receiving more than a quarter of the vote in a parliamentary election.
The meeting was hosted by the most anti-migrant, anti-Moslem, anti-EU party in the Czech Republic, Freedom and Direct Democracy. It finished fourth in October’s parliamentary election, winning 22 seats in the 200-seat lower house of Parliament.
The party wants to ban Islam, which it calls an ideology of hate. Its chairman, Tomio Okamura, is currently a deputy speaker of the house.
Hundreds of protesters joined a peaceful rally against the far-right gathering in Prague on Saturday.

The label "far-right" gets tossed around as insult and condemnation of any sort of nationalist party, but it is useful to remember that National Socialism was considered far-right. I think the simplified political scale in Europe looks like this:

Austria’s Freedom Party has secured the interior, defense, and foreign ministries in the new coalition government with the conservatives, the far-right party’s leader and Austria’s incoming vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache said Saturday.
Future chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s People’s Party party will have the finance, economy, and justice ministries, Kurz said. "The president was clear that he wanted the justice and interior ministries to be held by different parties," Kurz said.
The government, finally assembled after elections two months ago, is due to be sworn in next week, and Kurz, at 31, will be the world’s youngest prime minister.
The Freedom Party’s control of the three key ministries is likely to cause concern in Europe ...also known as Moslem Lebensraum... and beyond, given its myrmidon and neo-Nazi past, although the incoming interior minister Herbert Kickl insisted that "nobody has anything to fear."
The last time the Freedom Party entered government, in 2000 under controversial then-leader Joerg Haider, now dead, Austria was briefly ostracized within the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... and by Israel.
This time, though, the reaction is likely to be much more muted, with the Freedom Party, which was created by ex-Nazis, seen as having mellowed and with Europe more inured to right-wing parties.
Strache flirted with neo-Nazism in his youth but now, aged 48, besuited and with severe new glasses, portrays himself as a mature statesman rejecting extremism.
Strache visited Israel in 2010, as a guest of the Likud Party, Hadashot news reported, on a trip during which he toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and laid a wreath. He visited again in 2016.
Remaining fiercely nationalist, however, Strache in 2016 dubbed German Chancellor Angela Merkel ...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems .. "the most dangerous woman in Europe" and he says Islam "has no place in Austria."
Nicknamed "HC," he forged a partnership with Russia’s ruling party, wants EU sanctions on Moscow lifted, and seeks closer ties with the eastern European Visegrad group. He said last week that, in principle, he backs moving the Austrian embassy to Jerusalem but would respect the EU consensus against such a move.
Karin Kneissl, 52, a respected and multi-talented career diplomat who speaks Arabic, Hebrew and Hungarian, was tapped to head the Foreign Ministry. While not a member of the Freedom Party, Kneissl, who studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, shares many of its views, talking tough on immigration and the European Union.

The case of Linda W. has sparked a discussion in Germany on whether she should be tried in her native country or in Iraq, where she could face a death sentence for joining the turban group.

During the interview conducted by multiple German news outlets, Linda W. said:
"In Germany, everyone knows me, everyone knows how I look. I cannot go anywhere without being recognized, and I probably won’t find a job anymore."
"I don’t know how I came up with such a dumb idea. I’ve completely ruined my life."
"I was only in houses, so I’ve never really had anything to do with guns, nothing at all."
Hans-Georg Maaßen, the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, said earlier this month: "Women who have lived in IS-held areas in recent years are often so radicalized and tied to IS’ ideology that they can justifiably be called jihadists."
Suggesting that charges could be leveled against Linda W. and others like her, federal public prosecutor Peter Frank said: "We are of the opinion these women are guilty of membership in a foreign terrorist organization because they helped to strengthen the internal structure of the so-called ’Islamic State.'"
Why this is important: Until now, German women who were not in combat but married to IS holy warriors were rarely prosecuted. However, a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package... Linda W.’s case means that could all change.
How did she get to Iraq: At the age of 15, she forged her mother’s signature to catch a flight from Dresden to Istanbul. She met up with a Chechen turban in the Ottoman Turkish city, who she then married. They both crossed into Iraq, where her husband died in a battle shortly afterwards.
What happens next: If German prosecutors file charges against Linda W., they can make an extradition request to Iraqi authorities. However, a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package... without that, her fate lies in the hands of the Iraqi judicial system.

[ATimes] On Monday, US National Security Advisor HR McMaster added to tensions in the Middle East when he condemned Turkey and Qatar as prime sponsors of extremist Islamist ideology.
He tore into the Turkish leadership, saying the country’s growing problems with the West are largely due to the rise of the Justice and Development Party in Ankara.
McMaster now rounds on Turkey and Qatar for mentoring a radical Islamist ideology that "is obviously a grave threat to all civilized people." The stunning part is that Turkey is a NATO ally, while the US Central Command is headquartered in Qatar.
Arguably, Turkey no longer qualifies to be a NATO member. McMaster spoke at a rare public policy platform with his British counterpart Mark Sedwill, at an event hosted by the Policy Exchange think tank in Washington. How any of this transmutes into Anglo-American policy will bear watching. (Interestingly, on a visit to Greece last week, Erdogan publicly sought a revision of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, which was negotiated under the tutelage of Britain and the US and ceded, amongst other things, all Turkish claims on the Dodecanese Islands and Cyprus.
Significantly, McMaster’s outburst came within hours of a meeting in Ankara between Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, their eighth this year, during a combined day-long trip by the Russian leader which included stops in Egypt, Turkey and the Hmeimim airbase in Syria.

In an unsealed "confidential" report on counterterrorism issued by the NYPD’s intelligence unit, the agency designated five individuals linked to the Masjid Nur al-Islam mosque attended by the NYC terrorist Akayed Ullah as "most dangerous."
Bangladeshi law enforcement learned from Ullah’s relatives that the 27-year-old terrorist "had shown no sign of being interested in extremism before [moving] to US [sic] with his family in 2011," reports the Dhaka Tribune.

[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has given the federal government a week to implement its order in a case related to the uploading of sacrilegious content on social media.
IHC Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui warned on Friday that in case of non-compliance, the prime minister and other cabinet ministers could be summoned at the next hearing.
"If the same attitude continues [to be] exhibited by the executive, this court [will] issue directions for personal appearance of the worthy prime minister of Pakistain, ministers for law, religious affairs and information technology, to face contempt of court proceedings," read Justice Siddiqui’s order.
The judge added that the "respondents may realise this aspect that in contempt matters, no protection under Article 248 of the Constitution of Islamic Theocratic Republic of Pakistain is available".
He recalled that former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani had been sent packing over contempt of court.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Women's University in Kohat, Abbasi said, "When the APS Peshawar attack took place three years ago, all political parties and all our armed forces came together to fight terrorism in the country."
"As a result of this fight, we have defeated terrorism and today, our schools and mosques our safe," he added. "Everyone is free to visit markets and live freely in this country."
Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa also shared a message on the third anniversary of the APS attack.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The government of Pakistain has reacted at the remarks of the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson regarding the threats posed to Pak government by Haqqani terrorist network and other terror groups.
A front man for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistain Dr. Mohammad Faisal said "We do not agree with the comments and perception of Secretary Tillerson. Pakistain has undertaken large scale operations against holy warriors and their safe havens across the length and breadth of the country with notable success."
He said "These operations are being carried out in our own national interest and Pakistain is determined to rid it’s soil of the scourge of terrorism and extremism."
Secretary Tillerson has reportedly said Pakistain could lose control of its territory if it does not sever ties with the Haqqanis and other terrorists, according to the local Dawn News.
"Pakistain has allowed so many terrorist organizations to find safe haven within its territories, and these organizations are growing in size and influence, that at some point I have said to the leadership of Pakistain, you may be the target, and they turn their attention from Kabul and decide they like Islamabad as a target better," he has warned.

The Pentagon also said that terrorist safe havens along the Durand Line and the presence of hard boyz in Afghanistan are threatening the stability of the region.
"The Afghanistan-Pakistain border region remains a sanctuary for various groups, including al-Qaeda, al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba ...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI... , Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP), ISIS-K, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. Sanctuary on the Pak side and presence on the Afghan side remain security challenges for both countries and pose a threat to regional security and stability," the report added.
The report said that Afghanistan was fighting Lions of Islam who were being empowered from outside the country.
"Afghanistan continues to face an externally enabled and resilient insurgency. As Afghanistan completes its third year of full responsibility for the security of the country, Afghan forces have shown determination and growing capability in their fight against the Taliban-led insurgency," the Pentagon report said.

[NEWS.MB.PH] None of the weapons seized from Marawi City and destroyed this week showed any sign that they came from military stocks, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero said Friday.
"As for the (seized Maute Group) firearms inventoried so far, we are still to see any weapon (serial numbers) matching those in the inventory of the AFP," Guerrero said in Filipino when asked during a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City whether AFP weapons were found among the terrorists’ arms cache.
More than 1,000 firearms of various calibers and types were seized by government forces in the battle to liberate Marawi City.
The battle began when government troops tried to arrest Abu Sayyaf ...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder... leader and ISIS "emir" in Southeast Asia, IsnilonHapilon, last May 23.
Fighting was declared after authorities confirmed the death of Hapilon and Maute Group co-founder, Omar Maute, last October 23.
Some 652 weapons were taken to the Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, to be destroyed ceremonially early this week.
The remaining 400 are still being processed as of this posting.
