Afghanistan
Afghan President Lashes Out At US 'Threats'
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai lashed out at the United States, accusing it of making threats in the dispute over an agreement to keep U.S. troops in the country beyond 2014.
Sorry, Hamid. No check. You just can't do business with somebody who doesn't stay bought.
In an interview published Tuesday by the French daily Le Monde, Karzai says the U.S. is "absolutely" acting like a colonial power in its attempts to force him to sign the bilateral security agreement by the end of this year. The paper quoted him as saying: "The threats they are making, `We won't pay salaries, we'll drive you into a civil war.' These are threats."

Washington and NATO officials say the pact is critical to the plan to keep thousands of forces in Afghanistan after 2014 for a training and counterterrorism mission.

Karzai says he backs the long-delayed security agreement but balks at signing it himself. Although a national assembly of 2,500 delegates known as the Loya Jirga endorsed the deal last month and backed a U.S. request that it be signed by the end of the year, Karzai is deferring that to his successor.

Much is at stake if the deal falls apart. Afghanistan could lose up to $15 billion a year in aid, effectively collapsing its fragile economy and making it unable to pay its army and police.

In the interview, Karzai said he could "green light" the agreement before presidential elections due next April under two conditions: an end to airstrikes and foreign raids on Afghan homes; and greater U.S. efforts to help broker peace with the Taliban.

AHPC Delegation to Meet Mullah Baradar
[Tolo News] A member of the Afghan High Peace Council (AHPC), Qazi Amin Weaqad, said on Monday that a delegation would visit neighboring Pakistain soon to meet the Taliban second-in-command Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Weaqad said that Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
has pledged to ensure a meeting of AHPC delegation with Baradar. He also confirmed that so far it has not met the real representative of the Taliban group.

Weaqad says that it is the second time that the peace council has been invited to visit Pakistain and meet Mullah Baradar.

"An AHPC delegation met with officials from Pak defense and foreign affairs ministries, but a meeting was not held with Mullah Baradar during the tour. After his Kabul tour, the Pak premier pledged to pave the ground for a meeting with Baradar," he said.

AHPC officials have said that negotiations are underway between the government and some Taliban members, but so far the AHPC has not met with the genuine representative of the Taliban.

Baradar is considered important to assure meaningful talks.

"Baradar used to be the second in command in the Taliban group and he is trustworthy," Weaqad said. "We hope that Baradar would carry a message from the Taliban top commander in the next meeting and be the founder of the grinding of the peace processor with the AHPC."

Police warn of terrorist plot to strike Ugandan capital
[Shabelle] The Ugandan police on Monday issued a warning to the public, saying it had received information from "credible sources" that Death Eaters were planning to strike the capital, Kampala.

"Police last evening (Sunday) received information from credible sources of a plan by a group of people to unleash terror attacks in the city [on] Monday, 9 December", statement released by the spokesperson of the Ugandan police, Judith Nabakoba, said.

"The plan involves a group of thugs either on foot or boda-boda riders attacking and burning petrol stations and buildings in the city, especially business premises", the statement adds.

At the time of filing this report, no such terror attack had been reported in the Ugandan capital.

The police said it was hunting the unnamed suspected Death Eaters and that it had put in place measures to stop possible attacks on petrol stations across the city.

"As police hunt down the thugs, and takes precautionary deployment in all petrol stations and in the city, especially in the central business districts, we appeal strongly to proprietors of public places, especially petrol stations and business premises, to be extra vigilant, particularly do not allow strangers near your premises", the statement said.

Security has also been stepped up at public institutions, including Makerere University, Uganda's oldest university, where security personnel were checking the cars and the bags of everyone entering the grounds.

Uganda has long said it is a target for terror attacks by the Somali hard boy group Al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
because of the country's involvement in the fight against the hard boy group in Somalia.

Tuareg refugee camp "faces harsh winter"
[Libya Herald] Hundreds of Tuareg refugees from Ghadames are facing dire conditions in a camp in the Awal Valley, still based there having been forced from their homes in the town two years ago, according to a civil rights activist.

There are currently some 700 Tuareg refugees facing their second winter in the Awal Valley, 50 kilometres east of Ghadames. The community, seen to have supported the Qadaffy regime during the revolution, fled the southern town shortly afterwards after reprisals by the Arab majority. It is estimated by the UNHCR that at least 2,500 Tuareg were forced flee in 2011.

According to Abdallah Ali Al-Shareef, a Tuareg civil rights activist, conditions on the ground in Awal Valley have reached a "critical humanitarian situation". He adds that "in the coming winter we are concerned that problems will worsen".

Attempts by the authorities to negotiate a Tuareg return to Ghadames have been successfully resisted by the Arab community.

Arabia
Yemen retaliates against al-Qaeda through drones
[Yemen Post] Officials confirmed late on Monday that Yemen authorized a US drone to strike a vehicle believed to be transporting terror snuffies as it was travelling through the eastern province of Hadhramawt.

Ever since Islamists were driven out of the southern province of Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
in 2012, where they had established several strongholds, the group had attempted to use unrest and popular resentment in this fief of the Southern Secessionist Movement to set up new bases.

This has translated on the ground into a surge in violence, targeted-killings and acts of sabotage.

The missile killed all three passengers upon impact. The faceless myrmidons were, according to reports, driving in the al-Qatan district when they were struck by a missile.

"The vehicle and its occupants were completely burned," an official told Rooters.

Although drones have grown increasingly unpopular over the past months, as civilian casualties and deaths have piled up, making Yemenis rather uneasy as to the real benefits of those unmanned planes in terms of counter-terrorism, especially since security experts have often argue that drones have actually played into al-Qaeda narrative and antagonized local populations.

Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
slammed Yemen coalition government last August when it revealed that according its findings dozens of civilians, amongst whom many women and kiddies had perished in America's war against terror in Yemen.

Officials warned under cover of anonymity that Yemen would be likely to authorize many more US-led drone strikes after last Wednesday's kaboom against the Defence Ministry as to send a clear message to radical Islamists in the region.

Bangladesh
Angry Jamaat warns of dire consequences
[Bangla Daily Star] Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
yesterday threatened of dire consequences if its leader and condemned war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah is executed.

In the wee hours of today, it also called for a nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal
... a peculiarly Bangla combination of a general strike and a riot, used by both major political groups in lieu of actual governance ...
for today protesting the "decision to execute" Mollah.

In a statement, the key component of BNP-led opposition alliance said, "Those who are involved in violating the legal process will have to answer to the people."

It said the government was trying to "kill" Mollah to divert people's attention and fish in troubled water. The cost of this "conspiracy" would be fatal.

"The government has proved that it wants to fulfil its desire by hanging Abdul Quader Mollah, as it only issued his [Mollah's] death warrant, but did not provide him any certified copy of the verdict, which is an utter violation of human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
," read the release.

It also says the government, only out of political vengeance, was "conspiring to kill" Mollah hurriedly violating the constitution, Supreme Court rules and the jail code.

A judge late last night had stayed the execution of Mollah until 10:30am today.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, the partisans of Honorius went for their knives and the partisans of Stilicho went for the doors...
pro-Jamaat online activists have started posting instigating remarks on social networks, like Facebook and Twitter, since the jail authorities sent Mollah's family a letter asking them to meet the condemned war criminal for the last time.

In Rajshahi city, Jamaat-Shibir activists last night torched the house of former state minister for industries Omar Faruk Chowdhury protesting the government move to execute Mollah.

They also charged petrol bombs and vandalised 30 houses during their attack in Sagorpara area around 9:00pm. No casualties were reported.

In Gaibandha, following the announcement of the move to execute Mollah, Jamaat-Shibir activists vandalised the houses of Palashbari upazila unit Awami League president and five of its AL leaders in the town.

They swooped on the houses, including that of AL upazila unit president Tofazzal Hossain around 8:00pm. They also torched two vehicles of upazila chairman AKM Maksud Chowdhury Bidyut.

Several crude bombs were went kaboom! during the attack.

Jamaat leader execution stayed
[The Hindu] In a dramatic development, the chamber judge of Bangladesh Supreme Court stayed the execution of Quader Mollah till Wednesday following a late evening move of the defence seeking review of the death penalty.

However, one official of the jail authorities said, "We have yet to receive it [the court order] in our hands," adding that the authorities were waiting to get the order before taking any action.

Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order around 10:15 pm as the authorities of Dhaka Central Jail completed almost all preparation to hang Mollah.

Quader Mollah, the first convict of Bangladesh's historic war crimes trials and assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was to be executed a minute after midnight. Mollah is also known as "butcher of Mirpur" for his involvement in the genocide, mass rape and torture and abduction of the people supporting the Bangladesh liberation war against Pakistan.

He was sentenced to life by a war crimes tribunal on February 5 for crimes against humanity during the nation's liberation war in 1971. However, on September 17, the Appellate Division revised the verdict and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Meanwhile, Law enforcers had taken positions in different parts of Dhaka to bolster. Personnel from Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had been deployed in the capital to ensure law and order.

China-Japan-Koreas
N Korea accused of 'reign of terror' over shock purge
[Bangla Daily Star] North Korea's state media yesterday sought to whip up public support for the shock purge of leader Kim Jong-Un's uncle and former mentor, as South Korea accused Kim of waging a "reign of terror".

The North confirmed Monday that Jang Song-Thaek -- seen as Kim's political regent and the country's unofficial number two -- had been stripped of all posts and titles, accusing him of corruption and building a rival power base.

State TV showed photos of Jang being dragged out of his seat at a meeting by two officers, in an extremely rare public humiliation of a figure who has now been demonised as a drug-taking womaniser.

The official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said citizens angered by Jang's alleged crimes, which have been laid out in unusual detail, vowed to "burn Jang to death" or "cut his throat".

"Those miscreantss who sought to ruin our unity deserve a divine punishment... I want to throw Jang and his group into boiling water," it quoted Ri Yong-Song, a thermal power plant worker in Pyongyang, as saying.

The newspaper, in an article titled "Merciless iron hammers for anti-party elements!" also quoted a machinery plant worker who described Jang and his faction as "human trash" who were "worse than animals".

The paper published a full front-page editorial that called for unity under Kim Jong-Un, who has ruled since his father Kim Dear Leader Jong-Il
... hereditary dictator of North Korea. His definition of reunification isn't the same as the definition in Seoul...
died in December 2011, warning that North Korea would "never forgive any traitors".

Home Front: WoT
U.S. admits Iran will get $20b from sanctions relief
Senior officials in the administration of President Barack Obama have conceded over the past few days in conversations with colleagues in Israel that the value of the economic sanctions relief to Iran could be much higher than originally thought in Washington, security sources in Israel told Haaretz.
So it's not $3 billion or $7 billion...
In official statements by the United States immediately after the agreement limiting Iran’s nuclear program was signed in Geneva between Iran and theF six powers at the end of November it was said that the economic relief Iran would receive in exchange for signing the agreement would be relatively low – $6 billion or $7 billion. Israeli assessments were much higher – about $20 billion at least.

The United States had originally intended to make do with unfreezing Iranian assets in the amount of $3 billion to $4 billion. But during negotiations in Geneva, the P5+1 countries backtracked from their opening position
...of course they did, the jellyfish...
and approved much more significant relief in a wide variety of areas: commerce in gold, the Iranian petrochemical industry, the car industry and replacement parts for civilian aircraft. But the Americans said at the time that this would at most double the original amount.
The same Americans also estimated the cost of Obamacare...
However according to the Israeli version, the Americans now concede in their talks with Israel that the sanctions relief are worth much more. According to the security sources: “Economics is a matter of expectations. The Iranian stock exchange is already rising significantly and many countries are standing in line to renew economic ties with Iran based on what was already agreed in Geneva.”

The sources mentioned China’s desire to renew contracts worth some $9 billion to develop the Iranian oil industry and the interest some German companies are showing for deals with Tehran. “In any case, it’s about 20 or 25 billion dollars. Even the Americans understand this,” the sources said.

The interim agreement is to come into force on January 15. Until then, Iran is not restricted in terms of moving ahead on its nuclear program. Israel was surprised by the public statement by Obama at the Saban Forum in Washington late last week, that the agreements allowed Iran to continue enriching uranium. This is seen as an unnecessary concession considering that negotiations with Iran are still underway. However, the Israeli leadership seems to be seeking to somewhat lower its contentious tones toward Washington after two weeks of public scuffling and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s most recent speech with regard to Iran, also to the Saban Forum, was relatively moderate.

But along with efforts to renew intelligence and diplomatic coordination between the two countries on the nuclear issue, tussles are expected to continue between Obama and Netanyahu in another important arena – the U.S. Congress. The administration is very concerned about the objections to the agreement in Geneva by senators and congress members on both sides of the aisle. A few prominent opponents of the agreement who are experts in foreign affairs and frequently express themselves on the Middle East have articulated doubts about the deal and have called for additional heavy sanctions on Iran if the accord falls through.

Although Israel has not said so publicly, it is clear that Netanyahu’s representatives have also been in touch with these lawmakers in recent weeks. Among them are Republican senators Lindsey Graham, John McCain and Mark Kirk and Congressman Eric Cantor and Democratic senators Chuck Schumer, Robert Menendez and Congressman Steny Hoyer.

The extent of the administrations’ concern can be seen in an editorial in Tuesday's New York Times. The paper reads as if it is quoting Obama’s messages on the Middle East.
Right off the press release...
The article warned against the initiative of senators Kirk and Menendez to prepare new legislation that would complete the very effective sanctions moves they led against Iran a few years ago. According to the proposal, which has the behind-the-scenes support of senior Israeli officials, new sanctions would be instituted if at the end of the six months set out in the interim agreement a satisfactory arrangement is not reached with the Iranians.

The Times
warns breathlessly that the breakthrough attained in Geneva, which it calls the most positive development in relations between the United States and Iran in 30 years, will be put at risk by the initiatives in Congress. The interim agreement is “unquestionably a good deal,” which is preferable to military action and the paper joins the warnings issued both by the White House and the Iranian government against legislation that would sabotage the agreements implementation. According to the Times, moves by Kirk, Menendez and other senior officials are unnecessary and will “enrage the Iranians.”
That would be bad because...
It seems that the U.S. lawmakers are not impressed by this prospect and Netanyahu even less so. In the American-Israeli dispute, the tones may be more muted, but the scene of the next clash is clear – Congress in Washington.

India-Pakistan
'Father of Taliban' backs polio vaccination
[Pak Daily Times] A religious scholar known as the "Father of the Taliban" has issued a fatwa urging parents to immunise their children against polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
and other fatal diseases, adding that vaccinations comply with Islamic law.

The edict by Maulana Samiul Haq
...the Godfather of the Taliban, leader of his own faction of the JUI. Known as Mullah Sandwich for his habit of having two young boys at a time...
, who heads the Darul Uloom Haqqania seminary, comes more than a year after the Pak Taliban banned polio immunisation following a fake CIA vaccination programme meant to help track al Qaeda chief the late Osama bin Laden
... who is no longer with us, and won't be again...
. The ban has led to a surge in polio cases in Pakistain that threatens worldwide efforts to eradicate the infectious crippling disease, which is also endemic in Nigeria and Afghanistan.

Taliban fighters have launched regular attacks on medical workers and security personnel resulting in at least 25 deaths since the June 2012 prohibition on inoculation. But according to a statement signed by Haq and dated October 30, parents should disregard the Death Eaters' warnings.

"According to Sharia there is no harm in using vaccines which medical experts recommend to save children against deadly diseases," the statement seen by AFP on Tuesday said. "Polio, measles, tetanus, tuberculoses... are fatal and dangerous diseases and the vaccines to save young children and pregnant women are effective and harmless. There is no reality in the doubts and suspicions being spread against these vaccines."

"Parents should give the injections and drops of these vaccines to their children," it added.

The Taliban ordered their ban in response to the CIA's recruitment of Dr Shakeel Afridi to run a fake vaccination programme in Abbottabad

Pakistain recorded 72 cases of polio this year compared to 58 for all of 2012, a World Health Organisation (WHO) official said last week, with 50 coming in the lawless tribal areas along the Afghan border.

Govt says PTI to be responsible if aid blocked over drone protests
[Pak Daily Times] Referring to the continued blockade of NATO

supply by the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
-led government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervez Rashid has said that the PTI is putting national interest on stake only to win some seats of councillors in the local government elections.

While talking to media and addressing a ceremony arranged by the Ministry of Law and Justice in connection with the International Day of Human Rights, Pervez Rasheed said, "If international aid is blocked due to demonstrations against NATO supply, then demonstrators will be responsible for this act."

The information minister stated that Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
talks against NATO supply in the day but has dinners with foreign diplomats at night. "Those people who are now talking against drone attacks, will make the drones their darlings after just one dinner," Pervez Rasheed commented. He said NATO supply is going through the country under international agreements, and denied US has warned of stopping aid as a result of the blocking of NATO supply.

NA unanimously condemns repeated drone strikes
[Pak Daily Times] Amidst a visible division between the ruling PML-N and opposition party PTI over the strategy to halt US drone strikes, the National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to condemn the repeated drone attacks within the territories of the country and urged the allied forces to immediately stop this illegal practice.

The resolution was moved jointly by Kishwer Naeema Khan, Maulana Ameer Zaman and Shania Akhtar Ali of the JUI-F and received support of all the parties. The members of PML-N and PTI indulged in criticism over the latter's stopping of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
supply, which Minister for Frontier Regions Abdul Qadir Baloch dubbed as political point-scoring by the PTI. "The drone issue needs to be tackled diplomatically rather than being sentimental on it," he said.

Baloch asked how could a party having lower representation in the House dictate the assembly which has 342 members. However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
he emphatically declared that the government is opposed to such strikes which, he noted, are a blatant violation of the country's illusory sovereignty. He said drone attacks are proving counterproductive and the government wants to stop them by building pressure on the allied forces. A US drone attack early last month killed TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsood, sabotaging the grinding of the peace processor between the government and the Death Eaters which was about to begin.

Reacting to the remarks of Baloch, PTI politician Dr Arif Alvi said that his party has strong objection to his words and said that stoppage of NATO supplies is an indirect tool to help the government.

'Zardari cooperated with UN in BB murder probe'
[Pak Daily Times] Heraldo Munoz, writer of the book "Getting Away With Murder -- Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
's Assassination and the Politics of Pakistain" said that former president Asif Ali Zardari cooperated every time the UN commission approached him for investigation.

Talking to Daily Times at the Media Department of George Washington University, Munoz -- chief investigator of UN commission which was established to probe Benazir Bhutto's liquidation -- said, "President Zardari and PPP government did facilitate us though initially we have faced few difficulties."

Along with students and US State Department officials, Mark Siegel -- close aide and friend of Bhutto family who had also testified in Benazir's murder trail -- attended the second inauguration event of the book at the university.

In his book, Munoz, also a former UN assistant secretary noted, "We requested a private conversation with president Zardari to inquire about key facts relevant to our work. He accommodated us on at least two further occasions; our interviews included a lengthy and emotionally charged question-and-answer session at his suite at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Manhattan during his attendance at September 2009 General Debate of UN General Assembly in New York."

In one of his chapter of the book "The Assassination", he highlighted that former Inter-Services Intelligence director general Major General Nadeem Taj in a meeting with Benazir Bhutto in early hours of December 27 did convey about a possible terrorist attack against her and urged Ms Bhutto to limit her public exposure and keep a low profile at the campaign rally at Liauqat Bagh later the day.

"Intelligence officers from Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and United Arab Emirates had arrived by private plane in Pakistain the day before, General Taj said, to convey credible information about possible attack, which coincided with the revelation of ISI intelligence regarding terrorist cell in Mardan that might attack her in Rawalpindi," said Munoz in his 268-page book also carrying Benazir's picture on the cover.

He further mentioned, "Using communication-interception technology, the ISI had been tracking three separate Pak Taliban cells that were supposedly planning to attack Benazir, and the agency already knew about the information coming from foreign intelligence counterparts."

It is worth noting that Gen Taj responded to a query of Benazir during conversation at her residence in Islamabad on December 27 that: "General Kayani
... four star general, current Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army. Kayani is the former Director General of ISI...
's policy was that the ISI, from now on, was going to stay out of politics."

Abu Qatada challenges Jordanian court authority in terrorism trial
[Pak Daily Times] Radical Mohammedan holy man Abu Qatada told a Jordanian court on Tuesday he was not guilty of terrorism charges and challenged its authority to try him under the terms of his extradition from Britannia five months ago.

Appearing in court in brown prison fatigues, Abu Qatada said the presence of a military judge in the panel of three judges violated the agreement under which he was flown back to Jordan in July after many years of legal battles in Britannia.

While in Britannia he was convicted and sentenced in absentia by a Jordanian court to life imprisonment for conspiring to carry out terrorist attacks against U.S. and other targets inside Jordan. He is now being retried on those charges.

"I have been prevented from defending myself for a long period, and God knows that I am innocent," said Abu Qatada, saying that the charges against him were fabricated.

"There has been a betrayal of the agreement under which I have come. There is now a military judge - this is the first betrayal by you. I have come to be tried by civilian judges," said the Islamist holy man, whose real name is Mahmoud Othman.

"This court is a betrayal of the agreement and I don't recognise it," he said.

His lawyer Ghazi Thuneibat called for Abu Qatada's release, saying his client's rights had been violated by the presence of a military judge. But prosecutor Fawaz al-Atoum said Jordan's state security court law allowed for military tribunals in cases of terrorism.

in 2001. He was sent back to prison last March for breaching his bail conditions.

His return was made possible by an extradition treaty adopted by Jordan and Britannia that satisfied the concerns of British judges about the use of evidence obtained through torture.

Sermons of the heavily bearded Abu Qatada were found in a Hamburg flat used by some of those who carried out the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United

States.

Palestinians say Kerry appeasing Israel over Iran- at their expense
[Egypt Independent] A senior Paleostinian official said the United States was asking Paleostinians to make security concessions in peace talks with Israel in order to silence the Jewish state's criticism of world power diplomacy over Iran's nuclear program.

The accusations by Yasser Abed Rabbo
... Paleostinian politician and a member of the Paleostine Liberation Organization's (PLO) Executive Committee. He holds an M.A. in economics and political science from the American University in Cairo.....
, who joined Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
in a meeting with US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
last week, further clouded hopes of achieving a negotiated accord by an April target date.

Kerry, who is expected to return to the region late this week, presented both sides with suggestions on Thursday about how Israel might fend off future threats from a Paleostinian state envisaged in West Bank land it now occupies.

Israel has long demanded that under any eventual accord it retain swathes of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, as well as military control of the territory's eastern Jordan Valley - effectively, the prospective Paleostine's border with Jordan.

But Abed Rabbo told Voice of Paleostine radio that Kerry had plunged the process into crisis by seeking to "appease Israel through agreeing to its expansion demands in the (Jordan) Valley under the pretext of security."

Indonesian court jails ex-Islamic party head for graft
[Pak Daily Times] An Indonesian court has tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
the disgraced former head of the country's biggest Islamic party for 16 years over a scandal in which bribe money was laundered as gifts for dozens of women, including an adult magazine model.

The controversy, which erupted when an aide was discovered in a hotel room with a naked college student, has shattered the clean image of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), damaging its chances at polls next year.

Luthfi Hasan Ishaaq, who was president of the PKS when the scandal emerged, was found guilty late Monday by the anti-corruption court in the capital Jakarta of accepting bribes from a meat import company.

Anti-graft Sherlocks seized $110,000 in bribe money as well as six luxury cars from Ishaaq during the investigation.

Iranian foreign minister defends himself against hardline 'slander'
[Pak Daily Times] Iran's foreign minister defended himself on Tuesday against what he called "slander, profanity and insults" by conservative hardliners at home who have accused him of undermining the state and are pushing for his position to be reviewed.

Mohammed Javad Zarif was Iran's chief negotiator in a breakthrough deal struck with world powers last month under which Tehran is to curb its disputed nuclear programme in exchange for some respite from sanctions.

Some pro-security hardliners in Iran's complex power structure have complained that its negotiators gave up too much in Geneva by agreeing to stop higher-grade uranium enrichment in return for only limited relief from sanctions.

The resistance of a small but vocal minority has underlined the challenges to moderate President Hassan Rouhani in seeking to improve relations with Iran's long-time Western foes without provoking conservatives, who dominate parliament.

Twenty of the 290 members of parliament wrote to Rouhani on Sunday asking him to reassess Zarif's post after several public statements they described as "indecent", Fars news agency reported.

One occurred during a visit to Tehran University in which Zarif was quoted by local media as saying the West feared the might of the Iranian people, rather than its military defences, which he said it could destroy with a single bomb if it wished.

Zarif later said that this and other contentious comments attributed to him had been skewed or taken out of context.

"It's a shame that a small minority distorted my response to one of the students' questions to further their own political views," Zarif said in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.

"They have made up for their discomfort about the passionate support of the people for the government... with insults, profanity and slander."

In another statement, Zarif was quoted as saying that Iran was ready to negotiate over Abu Musa, one of three disputed islands to which both the Islamic Theocratic Republic and the United Arab Emirates lay claim. Since winning an election by a landslide in June, Rouhani has explored a diplomatic opening with the West and the Gulf region in a significant foreign policy shift after eight years under confrontational predecessor Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad.

Rouhani has enjoyed the crucial protection of holy manal Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in Iran's nuclear policy and has so far endorsed the preliminary deal.

Report: Hizbullah Commander Killed in Lebanon not Syria
[An Nahar] A high-ranking Hizbullah commander has died during training in a camp in Leb, security sources said, refuting claims he was killed in battle in Syria on Sunday.

The sources told An Nahar daily published on Tuesday that Ali Bazzi was mistakenly shot during a live fire training at one of Hizbullah's camps in Leb.

Hizbullah has lost scores of fighters since it joined Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
in battling the Sunni-led rebels, inflaming sectarian tensions on both sides of the border.

A Lebanese security source on Sunday said that Bazzi was killed in a "combat zone," without specifying the location.

A website for Bint Jbeil, Bazzi's hometown in southern Leb, announced his death on Sunday and posted pictures of him in military garb and holding an automatic rifle, saying he "died a martyr as he was carrying out his sacred duty as a jihadist."

A photo distributed in Sidon of Bazzi, showed a man with a white beard wearing a camouflage military uniform and a green beret.

Iran Dismisses Peres Offer to Meet Rouhani
[An Nahar] Iran on Tuesday dismissed an offer from Israel's president to meet his Iranian counterpart as a propaganda ploy to ease Israeli isolation over a nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers.

"This propaganda to help the regime out of isolation will prove fruitless," foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham told news hounds.

She said President Shimon Peres' offer was aimed at helping Iran's arch-foe Israel out of its isolation after its outspoken opposition to the nuclear deal clinched last month in Geneva.

Asked on Sunday about a possible meeting with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, Peres said: "Why not? I don't have enemies. It's not a question of personalities but of policies."

"The aim is to transform enemies into friends," said the president, whose role in Israel is symbolic and ceremonial.

Court Rejects Ex-MP Eid's Preliminary Pleadings, Deeming them 'Unconvincing'
[An Nahar] The Criminal Court of Appeals approved on Tuesday a Military Tribunal decision to reject the preliminary pleadings of Hiyam Eid, the lawyer of former MP and Arab Democratic Party leader Ali Eid, over her client's failure to abide by a summons for health reasons.

The Criminal Court of Appeals deemed the lawyer's pleadings as "unconvincing".

The Court explained that the Eid "obstructed the course of justice and wasted its time for no viable reason."

It therefore rejected Hiyam Eid's request, fining the defendant L.L. 500,000 and charging him with the legal fees linked to the plea.

In November, Ali Eid evaded a summons to undergo questioning by a military tribunal judge over his alleged aid to a suspect in the mosque bombings of the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...

Eid's attorney handed First Military Investigation Judge Riyad Abu Ghida a report claiming that the suspect cannot attend the questioning session for medical reasons.

She submitted the alibi to Abu Ghida, who referred it to the military prosecutor, State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr, for the appropriate response.

Abu Ghida had filed a subpoena against Eid and his drives Ali, on charges of helping Ahmed Merhi escape justice by smuggling him to Syria.

Merhi is the suspected driver of the explosive-laden vehicle that blew up near al-Taqwa mosque.

Huyam Eid called for Ali's release and said the military tribunal should withdraw the arrest warrant issued against the Arab Democratic Party leader.

The twin boom-mobileings that targeted the Sunni al-Taqwa and al-Salam mosques on August 23 have left hundreds of casualties.

Jarba Takes Part in GCC Summit, Accuses Regime of Arming Qaida-Linked ISIL
[An Nahar] Syrian opposition leader Ahmed Jarba on Tuesday appealed for urgent help for the Syrian opposition and civilians as he took part in the opening session of the 34th Gulf Cooperation Council Summit in Kuwait.

"The Syrian people need you today to tell the whole world that the Syrian regime will have no future in the country," said Jarba, who also thanked Kuwait for launching an "aid fund" without providing any details.

Jarba, head of the mainstream opposition National Coalition, accused Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
's regime of "supplying arms" to the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in a bid to defeat the uprising.

Jarba reiterated that the opposition had agreed to attend next month's Geneva 2 peace conference under conditions including that Assad plays no role in any transitional government.

He also accused Leb's Hizbullah of intervening militarily in Syria because of "sectarian" motives, saying "the slaughter of thousands of Syrians" at the hands of the regime and its allies aggravated "the anger of the hard boyz in the other camp."
