Sudan: Woman on Death Row to be Freed
[VOA News] Sudan's foreign ministry says a Sudanese woman sentenced to hang for identifying herself as a Christian will be freed "within days," following an international uproar over her conviction for apostasy.

Ministry front man Abdullah al-Azraq announced the development late Saturday in Khartoum, just days after the woman -- 27-year-old Mariam Yahya Ibrahim -- gave birth in prison while awaiting her execution.

Ibrahim is also the mother of a 20-month-old son. Both children are incarcerated with their mother.

Born to a Christian mother and a Moslem father and raised Christian after the father left the family, Ibrahim said she had never herself been a Moslem, despite Sudanese law defining children of Moslem fathers as Moslems by definition.

A court in early May gave her four days to recant her Christian faith, and imposed the death penalty when she refused to do so.

Christian-Moslem unions such as Ibrahim's marriage to U.S. citizen Daniel Wani are defined under Sudanese law as adultery, prompting the judge to impose an additional sentence of 100 lashes on the young mother.

Ibrahim's husband, Daniel Wani, is a Christian. He was not allowed to visit his wife and children on the day of the daughter's birth, but did see his family a few days afterwards. He says they are all doing well.

The death sentence sparked widespread criticism from Western governments and human rights

... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. said the ruling has "no place in today's world."

Amnesia Amnesty International also condemned the death sentence, calling it "abhorrent" and a flagrant breach of international human rights law.

Sudan's 2005 constitution guarantees the right to freedom of worship. But in practice, the government enforces a form of Islamic law.

[ABCNEWS.GO] A woman sentenced to death for marrying a Christian is drawing support from people around the globe as her story has gone viral on social media under the "#savemeriam" hashtag and world leaders condemn the sentence.

Ibrahim's story has galvanized people across the globe and this week a twitter hashtag "#Savemeriam" started to spread across the social network site to spur support for Ibrahim.

Egyptian Court Gives Death Sentence to 'Jewish' Islamists
Court infamous for sentencing 529 Islamists to death justifies its decision by saying they were 'demons' who follow the Talmud.

An Egyptian court that sentenced to death 37 Islamists and handed life terms to 492 others defended its verdict on Sunday, saying the men were "demons" who followed Jewish scripture.

The court in the central city of Minya had triggered international outrage earlier this year for sentencing to death hundreds of alleged supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in two separate mass trials which only lasted minutes.

In one trial in March, 529 were sentenced to death for the killing of a police officer but the court later upheld the sentencing against only 37 of them, while the rest were jailed for life.

In a statement Sunday to justify its decision, the court said: "The accused came out of the depths of hell... to plunder Egypt's wealth, terrorize its people and they killed the deputy commissioner."

It described the men as "enemies of the nation" who used mosques to promote the teachings of "their holy book, the Talmud," the central scripture of Judaism.

The military toppled Morsi in July last year, following mass protests against his year in power, and security forces launched a crackdown on his supporters, killing hundreds and arresting thousands more

In April, the same court in Minya handed the death penalty to 683 people it said were supporters of Morsi, accusing them of murder and the attempted murder of policemen.

Judges are due to confirm the 683 death sentences on June 21.

Tunisia Postpones Libya Meeting amid Chaos in Tripoli
[An Nahar] Tunisia said Saturday it has postponed an emergency meeting with its North African neighbors to discuss the chaotic situation in Libya, citing a lack of "foresight".
"Maybe we should stop by when you're not so busy?"
With lawlessness in Libya rising, Tunisia had been due to hold a session on Sunday with other member states of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) to find a political solution to the unrest in the mostly desert nation.

The union is made up of Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Algeria and Morocco.

"It is deemed preferable to postpone the meeting because there is a lack of foresight on the situation in Libya," foreign ministry spokesman Mokhtar Chouachi said Saturday.

The session was supposed to have been followed by a meeting of several countries' and organizations' special envoys, including those of the United Nations and the European Union, to Libya, but this was also postponed.

No dates for the postponement were given.

Chouachi's comments come amid a political power struggle in Tripoli, where rival governments are claiming control of the country's huge currency reserves from oil and gas, while a rogue general has launched an offensive on jihadists in the eastern city of Benghazi.

W. Africa Seeks Regional Effort against Boko Haram
[An Nahar] The West African bloc announced plans Saturday to increase cooperation with Central African states in the battle against "terrorism", amid fears of Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
's insurgency spreading across the region.

Nigeria has repeatedly said it needs more help from its central African neighbors -- including Chad, Cameroon and Niger -- to end the brutal five-year insurgency being waged by the Islamists.

In the final communique of an extraordinary security summit, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said it would "establish a high level partnership with Central African States to effectively combat terrorism."

Nigeria insists that Boko Haram fighters escape military pursuit by fleeing across the mostly non-existent borders of its northeastern neighbors and some analysts believe senior Boko Haram commanders are in fact based in Cameroon.

Nigeria's presidency has accused Cameroon of not doing enough to help defeat Boko Haram.

The call at the West Africa summit follows a joint declaration of war against Islamist bully boyz by Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger at a meeting in Gay Paree.

On Mali, ECOWAS urged the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
to strengthen its peacekeeping force deployed in the country, which is known as MINUSMA.

It also asked the U.N. Security Council to consider imposing "targeted sanctions against the gangs or individuals who impede the grinding of the peace processor" in Mali.

Britain
Provocative Islamic sign that says 'Do not walk your dog here! Muslims don't like dogs' investigated by police
[Independent] A sign declaring a London park an "Islamic area" and ordering dog walkers to stay away because "Moslems do not like dogs" is being investigated by police.

The warning, branded "alarming and divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
" by the local council, appeared in Bartlett Park in east London's Poplar.

It read: "Do not walk your dog here! Moslems do not like dogs. This is an Islamic area now."

Local Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick alerted police to the sign after a dog walker complained.

"The question is whether it was put up by the EDL to be provocative or by religious zealots to be racist," he told the Evening Standard.

"It's another facet of intolerance, or, because there's no guarantee it was done by Islamists, it could be those in society who are trying to polarise and divide us."

He called on the culprit responsible for the sign to "pack it in".

Police have removed the offending message and conducted additional patrols in the area.

"Bartlett Park does not have any history of community tension; however we are investigating the posting of these signs and conducting additional patrols to ensure that community reassurance and confidence are maintained in the area," Tower Hamlets Borough Commander Dave Stringer said.

A Tower Hamlets council front man said the poster was "alarming and divisive".

The investigation is ongoing.

Canadian convicted of trying to join Shaboobs
A Canadian was convicted Friday of trying to join Somalia’s Shebab militants, marking the first time Ottawa has brought charges of attempting to participate in terrorist activity.
Take a guess at the Canadian's first name: Patrick? Derrick? Richard? Jaques?
Mohamed Hersi, 28, was arrested at Toronto’s airport in March 2011 as he was about to leave for Cairo. He testified that he was not an extremist and did not support Shebab or terrorism and was on his way to Egypt to study Arabic when he was arrested.
Couldn't study Arabic at McGill?
Prosecutors, however, said Hersi was in fact traveling to his birth country of Somalia to join the Shebab.

Hersi was also convicted of counseling another person to participate in a terrorist activity, after he provided advice to an undercover policeman in the case. He faces a maximum 10 years in prison.

Fazl blames 'powers that be' for Fata turmoil
[DAWN] Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...
chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
on Friday blamed the 'powers that be' for turmoil in Fata and said those powers wanted to begin military operation in North Wazoo instead of resolving the issue through dialogue.

Speaking at a tribal jirga, Mr Fazl said only one institution was trying to impose its decision on the entire nation and even didn't care about the joint resolutions of parliament and All-Party Conference.

He said the military operation against bully boyz was eyewash and that the real action had been launched against rustics.

"JUI is being victimised for opposing military operation in North Waziristan," he said.

Says Fata people being ridiculed at security checkpoints
The JUI-F chief came down heavily on security forces for 'ill-treating' the Fata people and alleged that common man in the region was ridiculed at the military's checkpoints.

"I challenge them (security forces to show a single terrorist, who has been enjugged

at army checkpoints," he said.

He said Learned Elders of Islam had de-radicalised thousands of would-be jacket wallahs but their contribution hadn't been acknowledged.

The JUI-F chief said preparations for a full-fledged military operation in North Waziristan had been finalised and that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
had given a serious statement that he gave one chance to peace by initiating talks with the Taliban.

He said the government was not sincere about restoration of peace through talks and that was why his party didn't join the process.

Mr Fazl said his party didn't favour talks between the government and Taliban committees as political forces gave mandate for the same to the tribal jirga, which was formed in 2012.

He said he was sure peace talks won't succeed but even then, he didn't oppose the process.

"The reason for annoyance of powers that be is that JUI wants to engage tribal jirga in peace talks with the Taliban, which is not acceptable to one institution," he said.

The JUI-F chief said his party was 'punished' in general elections for principled stand on the matter.

He said he was trying to bring religious forces to a single platform and would soon meet leaders of religious parties for the purpose.

The jirga, where Jamaat-e-Islami

It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
chief Sirajul Haq, Pakistain People's Party leader Rahimdad Khan, MNAs, MPAs and tribal Maliks were in attendance, unanimously passed a resolution demanding that the government announce a special package for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons and reconstruct damaged infrastructure in tribal areas.

It passed another resolution condemning the recent military operation in Mirali and Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
and asking the government to begin meaningful talks with the Taliban for peace.

The participants agreed that tribal jirga should be engaged in talks.

They also condemned the killing of Malik Qadir Khan and other tribal elders, who had begun efforts for restoration of peace in Fata.

Many towns shut over killing of JSMM leader
[DAWN] LARKANA/DADU: Many towns in upper Sindh were shut on Friday to mourn the killing of central media coordinator of the outlawed Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz Munir Cholyani.

'Karachi operation police team being replaced gradually'
[DAWN] KARACHI: The high-profile coppers posted in September 2013 just days after the targeted operation was launched in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
under a federal government plan are being replaced one by one, sparking uncertainty in the police ranks and speculation about the future of the operation, it emerged on Friday.

With removal of Karachi police chief AIG Shahid Hayat and the DIG-West following the order of the Supreme Court, rumours about the imminent transfer of the DIG-South and the DIG-East were seen to be creating uncertainty, according to the three senior coppers who spoke to Dawn on Friday on the condition of anonymity.

Certain powerful elements who might have faced 'difficulty' in exercising their influence in the presence of Mr Hayat were trying to bring in their 'like-minded' officers, said an officer.

Though the officer believed that the chief minister of Sindh was not happy over the emerging development, another police officer said that rumours about the transfer of one DIG were rife partly because his subordinate officer enjoying political patronage did not like his superior.

The Rangers director general, leading the operation, was particularly perturbed over the development, said one officer.

Referring to the flurry of meetings which the Rangers DG held with the Sindh chief minister, governor, chief secretary and federal interior minister recently, the officer said that the force wanted to at least retain the remaining team of the Karachi operation if Mr Hayat could not be brought back.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Report: Israel to deploy nuclear-armed submarines off Iran coast
[Haaretz] Sunday Times quotes IDF official saying the 3 German-made long range submarines will gather intelligence, act as deterrent and potentially land Mossad agents.

Israel is to deploy three submarines equipped with nuclear cruise missiles in the Persian Gulf, the Sunday Times reported on Sunday.

According to the Times report, one submarine had been sent over Israeli fears that ballistic missiles developed by Iran, and in the possession of Syria and Hezbollah, could be used to hit strategic sites within Israel, such as air bases and missile launchers.

Dolphin, Tekuma, and Leviathan, all German-made Dolphin class submarines of the 7th navy Flotilla, have been reported as frequenting the Gulf in the past, however, according to the Sunday Times report, this new deployment is meant to ensure a permanent naval presence near the Iranian coastline.

A flotilla officer told the Times that the deployed submarines were meant to act as a deterrent, gather intelligence and potentially to land Mossad agents.

"We're a solid base for collecting sensitive information, as we can stay for a long time in one place," the officer said.

The flotilla's commander, identified only as "Colonel O," was quoted by the Times as saying that the submarine force was "an underwater assault force. We're operating deep and far, very far, from our borders."

The submarines could be used if Iran continues its program to produce a nuclear bomb. "The 1,500km range of the submarines' cruise missiles can reach any target in Iran," a navy officer told the Times.

Apparently responding to the reported Israeli activity, an Iranian admiral told the Times: "Anyone who wishes to do an evil act in the Persian Gulf will receive a forceful response from us."
