Afghanistan
German troops may leave Afghanistan if US forces withdraw: Report
[PRESSTV] Former German Defense Chief General Harald Kujat has warned that a probable American military withdrawal from Afghanistan may jeopardize German troops and force them to leave.

"If the United States reduces itself to a small contingent in Afghanistan there's no reason for us to continue the mission anymore," Kujat told the German Tagesspiegel newspaper on Thursday.

The former head of the Bundeswehr said it was "out of question" for German forces to remain in Afghanistan if they could not be given guaranteed protection and support.

Kujat, however, added that he expected other NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
members to increase contribution to make up for any US troop withdrawal.

Minister of State in the German Foreign Ministry Niels Annen also expressed frustration with the American announcement.

"We have noticed repeatedly that the Trump government does not particularly value close coordination with its allies. We're currently trying to reach clarity by speaking to our colleagues in Washington and Kabul," said Annen.

US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
reportedly ordered the withdrawal of some 7,000 troops, half of the total number of American forces in the country, from Afghanistan last week.

#5  German mobile surgery unit supports soldiers in northern Afghanistan

MAIMANAH, Afghanistan — When Resolute Support forces go to remote areas in northern Afghanistan, this mobile medical team is the first in, and the last out.

"All members of this team are experts in the field,” said German Army Lt. Col. Daniel H., M.D., senior surgeon for Train, Advise, Assist Command-North (TAAC-North). "They trained in Germany for several different missions, and we are really a team of specialists. I think we are very well prepared for this mission.”

Daniel and his Damage Control Surgery (DCS) Unit colleagues are part of the 265 soldiers participating in the Expeditionary Advisory Package (EAP) mission in Maimanah, Faryab province. EAPs are one part of a multi-pronged strategy to continue increasing ANDSF capability and enable them to increasingly go on the offensive against the Taliban. RS continues to support the ANDSF through persistent embedded advising down to the kandak (battalion) level, further improving ANDSF performance and sustainability.

The DCS Unit can be fully operation capable within four hours and are equipped to conduct all the medical procedures required to save a soldier‘s life. The medical team is highly skilled in providing life-saving trauma support including surgery, staunching blood flow from wounds and replenishing lost blood. Their mission is to care for both injured RS and ANDSF personnel conducting combat operations against the Taliban and IS-K.

Govt Not Aware Of Peace Talks Agenda: Ismail Khan
[Tolo News] Mohammad Ismail Khan, a former Jihadi leader and member of the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
Party of Afghanistan, on Friday said the National Unity Government is not aware of the peace talks’ agenda ‐ as the peace efforts are ongoing by the international community, US on the top, and the Afghan government.

He warned that the efforts for holding talks with the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
, including the next meeting in Jeddah, will have no results unless the Afghans and regional countries enter the process.

"The peace agenda should become clear for the people of Afghanistan or at least government should be aware of the grinding of the peace processor," Khan told TOLOnews. "So far, neither the Afghan government, nor the Afghan people have enough information in this regard."

He said that Jamaat-e-Islami party is forming a team to negotiate with the Taliban but he did not give more details about the team.

"Jamaat has considered a list of figures but has not introduced them officially. Let’s the grinding of the peace processor get completed and the talks get started officially in the form that the Taliban show readiness for negotiations, then we will introduce the team," he said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results...
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
’s Hizb-e-Islami said they are trying to hold negotiations with the Taliban.

"The Islamic movement of the Taliban accepts participation in a joint government and we see it an important progress. They are discussing ceasefire and an interim government," said Humayun Jarir, Hizb-e-Islami member.

While the Afghan government has said they will send a 12-member team to Jeddah for talks with Taliban, but some former Taliban members said representatives of the group will not meet the Afghan government delegation in Jeddah.

"Discussion has not been held on the withdrawal of foreign forces (from Afghanistan) while Taliban has reiterated on this issue," said Sayed Akbar Agha, a former member of the Taliban.

#1  General question: After the USA then most of NATO pull out one would assume that the PLA or PLA-Police filter into the vacuum so near their border and New Silk Road routes. Now if the ISI idiots keep a war going in areas with the PLA will the PLA show the restraint the US did or just blow the ISI to kingdom come?

Bangladesh
Fresh violence mars Bangladesh election as campaigning ends
[DAWN] Bangladesh's general election campaign ended on Friday with more deadly violence and arrests of opposition activists which have raised international concern as Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
seeks a record fourth term.

A ruling Awami League party supporter was killed by opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) followers, police said, while the BNP claimed 19 more of its activists were tossed into the calaboose ahead of Sunday's election.

The official campaign ended ended at 8am Bangladesh time on Friday after seven weeks of widespread street festivities and accusations of an official crackdown on the opposition.

An opinion poll indicated Hasina is favourite to win despite the controversy.

Police said the Awami League supporter was beaten to death in the northeastern city of Sylhet late on Thursday.

They had reported two earlier deaths of Awami League activists since the campaign opened on November 8. The BNP says eight of its supporters have been killed in election festivities.

Neil Prakash: Australian jihadist stripped of citizenship
[BBC] Australia's most wanted jihadist, Neil Prakash, has been stripped of his Australian citizenship.

Announcing the move, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton described Prakash as "a very dangerous individual".

Intelligence officials say Melbourne-born Prakash was a recruiter for the Islamic State (IS) group and encouraged terrorist plots in Australia.

He is currently being held in Turkey where he faces trial on terror-related charges.

In July, a Turkish court ruled against extraditing him to face terrorism charges in his home country.

In Australia, he faces charges of being member of a terrorist organisation as well as supporting and promoting IS.

In a televised new conference, Mr Dutton said Prakash had been central to IS's efforts in the Middle East.

"If given the opportunity Mr Prakash would harm or kill Australians and our country is a safer place for him having lost his Australian citizenship," he said.

Europe
1 in 5 non-Christians in France has never heard of the Holocaust, survey finds
And by non-Christian the editor means Muslim, one suspects.
[IsraelTimes] Ignorance about the Holocaust and revisionism appear strongest among far-right and far-left voters

More than 20 percent of non-Christians in La Belle France have never heard of the Holocaust, a new survey found.

The survey ‐ of 1,014 Christian and non-Christian adults, as well as those who said they were without religion ‐ was conducted this month for the American Jewish Committee and two other groups by the Ifop research group.

Ignorance about the Holocaust and revisionism appeared strongest among far-right and far-left voters, and people who said they follow a faith that is not Christianity. Islam is La Belle France’s second-largest religion, with 8.8 percent of the population according to a 2017 Pew study. Judaism is third with 0.8 percent.

Among non-Christians, 21 percent said they had never heard of the Holocaust, compared to only 10 percent of all respondents. Overall, 21 percent of all respondents didn’t know when the Holocaust happened. Among non-Christians, the figure was 34 percent.

Among respondents who said they are religious but not Christians, 11 percent said the figure of 6 million Holocaust victims was "exaggerated" and a further 4 percent said the Holocaust was "invented."

Just over a quarter of non-Christian respondents said the Holocaust was merely "another tragedy among many others in a war with many victims." Overall, only 3 percent of all respondents agreed with the statement.

Asked whether they think French Jews feel insecure in their country, 53 percent of all respondents and 40 percent of non-Christians said no.

Among supporters of the far-right politician Marine Le Pen, 15 percent said they had never heard of the Holocaust. That figure was 10 percent among supporters of Jean-Luc Melenchon, a far-left politician. Only 4-5 percent of supporters of more centrist politicians indicated total ignorance with regards to the Holocaust.

Germany to curb mosque funding from Gulf states
[DW] The German government has started to request that those countries register any funding they may provide to mosques in Germany, a report says. The move aims to discourage radicalization in German mosques.

The German Foreign Ministry wants Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
, Kuwait and other Gulf states to register any donations or state subsidies intended for mosques in Germany.

According to daily Suddeutsche Zeitung and German broadcasters WDR and NDR, the government has involved both the domestic and foreign intelligence services to monitor who sends the money and who receives it.

The Gulf states are also required to alert German authorities if a religious group from Germany seeks support or advice in their country.

The new practice, which the report says has already been in place since the spring, follows on from Interior Minister Horst Seehofer's comments at Germany's Islam conference in November, where he pledged to reduce "foreign influence" on Germany's mosques.

The report says that cooperation with Kuwait, in particular, on this issue is already bearing fruit. Other states are apparently more hesitant.

MOSQUE TAX FLOATED
One controversial idea that has been floated in the last few weeks is to introduce a mosque tax that ‐ similar to the German church tax that members of the Protestant and Catholic churches have to pay ‐ would make mosques more financially independent and thus minimize the risk of radicalization fueled by money from rich Moslem-majority states.

Based on reports from Germany's Joint Counter-terrorism Center (GTAZ), the government has been surveilling "Salafist missionary activities from the Arab Gulf states" since 2015, when tens of thousands of refugees came to Germany.

The GTAZ says countries like Saudi Arabia have "long-term strategies" to influence radical groups of Islam, which Riyadh has denied. German intelligence also suggests that "missionary groups" from the Gulf states are increasingly interlinked with Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
in Germany and Europe.

The report published by German broadcasters points out that there are no reliable figures on exactly how much money has been transferred to radical groups in Germany from the Gulf states.

Prosecutors Say German IS Woman Let 'Slave' Girl, 5, Die of Thirst
[AnNahar] German prosecutors on Friday announced war crimes charges against a female member of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist group who let a five-year-old girl die of thirst in the scorching sun.

While living in then IS-occupied djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Iraq, the 27-year-old German citizen identified only as Jennifer W. and her husband had purchased the child as a household "slave" in 2015, said prosecutors.

"After the girl fell ill and wet her mattress, the husband of the accused chained her up outside as punishment and let the child die of thirst in the scorching heat," they said in a statement.

"The accused allowed her husband to do so and did nothing to save the girl."

The federal prosecutors said they had laid the charges of war crimes, murder and weapons offences back on December 14 in a Munich court that deals with state security and terrorism cases.

Jennifer W. had first left Germany in August 2014 and travelled via The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Syria to Iraq where she joined the IS the following month.

Recruited to a vice squad of the Lion of Islam group's self-styled morality police, she would later patrol the city parks of the IS-occupied cities of Fallujah and Mosul.

"Her task was to ensure that women comply with the behavioral and clothing regulations established by the terrorist organization," said the statement.

"For intimidation, the accused carried an assault rifle of the type Kalashnikov, a pistol and an explosives vest."

In January 2016, months after the child's death, W. visited the German embassy in Ankara to apply for new identity papers.

When she left the mission, she was tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
by Ottoman Turkish security services and extradited several days later to Germany.

For lack of actionable evidence against her, she was initially allowed to return to her home in the state of Lower Saxony.

"Since then her declared goal has been to return to the territory under IS rule," said the prosecutors.

When she attempted to again travel to Syria in June of this year, German police arrested her.

No date has been set yet for the start of the trial. If found guilty, she would face up to life in jail.

314 migrants colonists arrive in Europe by sea

Boat with 300 migrants arrives in Spain after week at sea

[AlAhram] A Spanish aid boat carrying over 300 migrants rescued at sea arrived in Spain on Friday, ending a weeklong journey across the western Mediterranean. The boat, operated by the nonprofit group Proactiva Open Arms, docked at the Spanish port of Algeciras.

The boat rescued 313 migrants in waters near Libya last week, but had to travel to Spain after Malta denied it permission to dock and Italy and other countries refused to help.
Why were they not returned to Libya immediately?
Three of the migrants were later evacuated for health reasons.

Oscar Camps, head of Proactiva Open Arms, said Friday that the group of migrants included ``19 different nationalities, with many people with the right to ask for asylum.''

According to the UN refugee agency, over 2,200 migrants have died trying to cross the Mediterranean this year in unseaworthy smugglers' boats while 119,336 have reached Europe.
Deutsche Welle adds:
Open Arms rescued the migrants on December 21 from three separate vessels in distress. Many of those rescued came from Somalia, Nigeria and Mali. Pregnant women, children and babies were among the group.

This year, Spain was Europe's main point of entry for migrants, registering more than 56,000 arrivals.

Syrian Migrant from Lebanon Rescued Off Cyprus, Says 7 Drowned

[AnNahar] A Syrian man has been rescued off Cyprus after the boat he was travelling in capsized, officials said, with media reporting Friday he told police another seven migrants had drowned. Cypriot rescue workers said the 32-year-old was picked up at sea Thursday by a U.S.-flagged cargo vessel and airlifted to a hospital on the Mediterranean island suffering from hypothermia.

The man told police Friday that he was the lone survivor from a group of eight Syrian migrants who left Lebanon on December 21 in a boat they had purchased, Cypriot state radio said. The migrants tried to use GPS to navigate their way to Cyprus but lost direction and ran out of fuel before their boat capsized in stormy seas Tuesday, the radio cited a police source as saying.

Over the past 12 months there has been a steady flow of Syrian migrants arriving in Cyprus from Turkey and Lebanon. European Union member Cyprus has warned Brussels it faces growing pressure from increasing irregular migration.

EU data earlier this year showed it had received more asylum applications per capita than any of the bloc's other 28 nations. Cyprus said it has received over 4,000 asylum requests in the first eight months of 2018 -- 55 percent more than in the same period last year.

But despite lying just 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the coast of war-torn Syria, Cyprus has not seen the massive inflow of migrants experienced by Turkey and Greece.

Issues such as national resource constraints and other economic issues will be given special attention, read a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

"One criticism which we often face is that our foreign policy always focuses on defence, and economic issues are overlooked. Keeping this in mind, we have included individuals who are associated with the fields of economics and trade," the Foreign Office said.

Not only has the foreign office been attached to the council but institutions like the Foreign Services Academy will also be associated with the council, it added.

SC directs interior ministry to declare Pak-Turk education foundation a terror outfit
[DAWN] The Supreme Court on Friday directed the interior ministry to declare Pak-Turk International Cag Education Foundation (PTICEF)
...another of the Gulenist organizations...
a proscribed organization and ordered that the control of educational institutions, being run by the PTICEF, be handed to Turkiye Maarif Foundation.

On December 13, a local lawyer Sohail Sajid had filed a constitutional petition in the Supreme Court and requested it to declare the group a terrorist outfit in the country. The petitioner had also requested that the custody of Pak-Turk Schools be granted to Turkiye Maarif Foundation.

Announcing its verdict in the aforementioned case, the apex court ordered the interior ministry to include the name of PTICEF in the first schedule to Section 11-B of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The apex court also directed the country’s financial institutions to immediately freeze the bank accounts of PTICEF and give the custody of such assets to Turkiye Maarif Foundation.

PLO's Ashrawi condemns Israel's approval of hundreds of new illegal settlement units
[Middle East Monitor] Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee Member Hanan Ashrawi strongly condemned the Israeli Civil Administration’s decision to approve for the establishment of 1,451 new settlement units in the occupied West Bank and to advance plans for the construction of 837 additional units, Maan News Agency reports.

Ashrawi said, in a statement released on Thursday, that "Today’s announcement once again proves that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing and racist coalition government are pursuing systematic policies of settler colonialism, apartheid and ethnic cleansing to appease the violent and extremist settler population and to win votes ahead of Israel’s upcoming elections in April."

"The deafening silence from the international community and the current US administration’s unyielding support of the military occupation have enabled the Israeli government to expand its illegal settlement enterprise which constitutes a war crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and a direct violation of international law and conventions, including UNSC resolution 2334."

She added that "The enormity and severity of the situation and Israel’s deliberate efforts to displace Palestine and replace it with "Greater Israel" should send a strong message to governments worldwide that they need to intervene immediately and to undertake concrete measures to hold Israel accountable with serious punitive measures and sanctions."

Ashrawi also appealed to UN Secretary-General Ant nio Guterres to "ensure compliance with Security Council resolutions, including UNSC resolution 2334, and to make certain that Israel complies with them before the chances for a just peace and stability in the region and beyond are destroyed."

African migrants have highest crime rate in Israeli population
[Ynet] In 2017, Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
n and Sudanese asylum-seeking nationals had 4.3 times more sex crime cases, 3.5 times more violent crime cases, and 3.1 times more property cases than the general public.

In addition, Sudanese and Eritrean migrants colonists had 3.4 times more sexual offense cases, 3.3 times more property offense cases and 3.1 times more violence offense cases than the rest of the foreign population in Israel.

The police refused to provide any data about murder cases.

"In addition, these crime offenses gravely influence the population's sense of personal security, as opposed to white collar offenses and tax offenses. It is important to stress that in some cases, the Sudanese and Eritrean population is involved in severe crime, which Israeli society is not accustomed to, such as the assault and rape of the elderly, eight-year-old girls, and disabled women. Therefore, these crimes are enough to create an atmosphere of fear, especially in neighborhoods like south Tel Aviv, with a high percentage of asylum seekers," the Immigration Policy Center added.

Yonatan Yakobovich, the director of the Immigration Policy Center, said: "It's about time to put an end to the false information being disseminated about foreign nationals. The data we've received from the police unequivocally proves that the crime rate among the infiltrators is significantly higher than their proportion of the population, and the nature of these offenses influences Israeli citizens' sense of personal safety.

It is important to note that most Sudanese and Eritrean nationals in Israel are young men, a demographic with a crime rate higher than the general population in any event.

Prof. Shlomo Mor Yosef, Director General of the Population and Immigration Authority, said the Knesset State Control Committee was still waiting for the transfer of a NIS 28 million budget to provide welfare and health services for Sudanese and Eritrean nationals.

Committee chairwoman and Zionist Union MK Shelly Yachimovich added: "The government doesn't have an independent policy on the matter. On the one hand, asylum seekers are not being deported from Israel, but on the other hand the state won't acknowledge them. This is both a moral and constitutional issue, which obligates us as a country to treat this population. They are human beings who live among us."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran: Return of Syrian Army to Manbij, 'important step'
[PRESSTV] Iran's Foreign Ministry has welcomed the arrival of Syrian government forces for the first time in years in the strategic northern city of Manbij, previously held by Kurdish faceless myrmidons from the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Following the reports on Friday that Syrian government forces gained control of Manbij, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the raising of Syria's national flag in the city was an "important step" towards the stabilization of the legal government in the Arab country.

"The Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran emphasizes the necessity to respect Syria's national illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity and regards the raising of Syria's national flag in the city of Manbij as an important step to consolidate the illusory sovereignty of the constitutional government of Syria over the entire country and a new step to resolve the country's crisis," the Iranian spokesperson said.

The Syrian Army entered Manbij near the Ottoman Turkish border, marking the return of territories held by US-backed faceless myrmidons to the government fold.

US troop withdrawal from Syria could take several months — report
[IsraelTimes] Officials tell ABC News that pullout plan will be carefully executed to ensure the safety of all US personnel and the removal of all military hardware

The Trump administration’s plan to withdraw American troops from Syria could take several months to implement, US officials told ABC News Friday, stressing that an exact time frame has not yet been agreed.

Shortly after US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s surprise announcement that the forces would pullout, officials said the plan could be implemented in as little as 30 days.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
according to ABC, the pace of withdrawal could actually be far slower, appearing to confirm the president’s statement during a surprise trip to Iraq on Wednesday when he said there would be a "strong, deliberate and orderly withdrawal" of US forces from Syria, where they have been helping battle Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadists.

Officials told ABC that the withdrawal plan will be carefully executed to ensure the safety of all US personnel, as well as the removal of all military hardware from the country.

Officials said US and coalition aircraft will carry out Arclight airstrikes and provide air support for US troops during the withdrawal, but it was not made clear whether the strikes would continue after the pullout.

The president this week defended his decision to pull the troops out, saying that it is because of US military gains that he can withdraw 2,000 forces from Syria.

"We’re no longer the suckers, folks," Trump told American servicemen and women at a base in western Iraq. "We’re respected again as a nation."

"I made it clear from the beginning that our mission in Syria was to strip ISIS of its military strongholds," Trump told troops clad in fatigues at al-Asad Airbase west of Baghdad.

"Eight years ago, we went there for three months and we never left," he said. "Now, we’re doing it right and we’re going to finish it off."

"It’s not fair when the burden is all on us," he said. "We don’t want to be taken advantage of any more by countries that use us and use our incredible military to protect them. They don’t pay for it and they’re going to have to."

"We are spread out all over the world. We are in countries most people haven’t even heard about. Frankly, it’s ridiculous," he added.

Trump told reporters he had overruled generals asking to extend the Syria deployment, where about 2,000 US forces, joined by other foreign troops, assist local fighters battling the Islamic State jihadist group.

"You can’t have any more time. You’ve had enough time," he said he told the top brass.

For Israel, the pullout leaves it without a staunch ally in the fight against Iran in Syria and potentially opens the door for the Islamic Theocratic Republic to create a so-called "land bridge" from Iran, through Iraq and Syria, into Leb and the Mediterranean Sea.

Until now, American troops have been stationed in northeastern Syria, along the Iraqi border, blocking such a corridor, through which Iran could more easily distribute advanced weapons and technology throughout the region, especially to its Lebanese client the Hezbollah terrorist army.

The US will still “maintain a presence” after troop pullout from NE Syria
Hat tip The New Neo, who also links to this interesting perspective from Daniel Greenfield at Front Page Magazine.
[DEBKAfile] Following the backlash from President Trump’s decision to withdraw US troops from NE Syria, senior administration officials Friday night, Dec. 21 offered Mid East leaders clarifications for allaying their concerns. DEBKAfile’s sources reveal those messages’ high points:

1. US troops will leave eastern and northern Syria, but America is not deserting this part of the country, said the officials, without revealing the nature of its continuing presence.

2. The Trump administration has not abandoned the Kurds or “stabbed them in the back” as widely reported, “and the Kurds know this,” it was authoritatively said. And, indeed, despite their loud cries of dismay, not a single Syrian Kurdish militiaman has deserted the lines they hold against ISIS in eastern Syria.

3. Regarding President Tayyip Erdogan declaration that the Turkish army was about to march on East Euphrates and reach the Kurdish capital of Qamishli, amid fears of a massacre, the US officials advised distinguishing between talk and deeds. They referred to a phone conversation between Presidents Trump and Erdogan on Dec. 14, in which the latter promised his army would not cross the Euphrates. In a speech welcoming the US pullout from Syria on Friday, Erdogan allowed that Turkey would “wait a little longer before launching the operation” and counted on US “logistic support.”

4. Trump said subsequently that the troop pullout would be phased out within 40-60 days. According to the US officials, a more realistic timeline would be 4 to 6 months. “During that time, Syria is bound to see many developments that may require Washington to revise its plans.”

5. The US and Iraq are in advanced negotiations for the deployment to the Iraqi-Syria border of the Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF) – the “Golden Division” – which drove ISIS out of Mosul. It will stand in the path of Iranian and Iraqi Shiite militias crossings into Syria.

6. Part of the ISOF’s deployment will include the western Iraqi province of Anbar. In this regard, the US officials referred to a disclosure by Mohammad al-Dilemi, one of the chiefs of Anbar’s Arab tribes. On Dec. 12, he said that the US army was building a new base on the line dividing Anbar from the next-door province of Nineveh. It would position US troops 30km north of the Euphrates River and near the Syrian border. This new base will provide the Iraqi division with American backup.

7.The officials from Washington refused to confirm or deny that the Russians were involved in the forthcoming US plans for Syria; nor would they refer to a possible US-Turkish-Russian deal on the subject. They did take note of the strides taken in recent weeks toward repairing Russian-Israeli relations. The US officials pointed out that the transfer of a Russian S-300 air defense missile battalion to Deir ez-Zour in eastern Syria brought the Israeli Golan and Galilee Panhandle within their range, but not the Israel Air Force bases in northern and central Israel.
