US will need forces in Afghanistan until no insurgency left, says top General
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The United States will need to keep counterterrorism forces in Afghanistan until there is no insurgency left in the country, the top US general said on Wednesday, suggesting a far longer military presence even after more than 17 years of war.

"I think we will need to maintain a counterterrorism presence as long as an insurgency continues in Afghanistan," Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford said during a congressional hearing.

The United States is currently in talks with the Taliban

U.S. is ending a training program for Afghan pilots after almost half went AWOL in America
We had an article recently from the Afghan press on this subject, but this has more detail.
[FighterJetsWorld] A program to train Afghan attack pilots has been ended after the airmen kept going absent without leave, or AWOL, while training in the United States.

More than 40 per cent of the Afghan Air Force students enrolled in the U.S.-based training program to fly the AC-208 Combat Caravan, a light attack combat aircraft, went AWOL, according to a quarterly report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR.

“Those students that did not go AWOL were pulled back to Afghanistan to complete their training: as a result, only one class graduated from the U.S.-based program,” the report says. “The second and third classes will continue and finish their training in Afghanistan.”

The training took place at Fort Worth, Texas, SIGAR told Air Force Times. Northrop Grumman operates a 5,000 square-foot custom-built classroom space located at Meacham Airport in Fort Worth.

“The AC-208 Training Center of Excellence is designed to provide partner nations with instructional classroom activities and initial aircrew and maintenance training on the Northrop Grumman modified AC-208 Eliminator aircraft,” a Northrop Grumman press release reads.

The AC-208 is essentially a Cessna that carries some Hellfire missiles. After the U.S. military withdrew from Iraq in 2011, the Iraq air force used a handful of the aircraft to take potshots at ISIS because it lacked adequate attack helicopters and jet fighters.

Aficionados of U.S. military efforts to train Afghan troops will find this latest revelation familiar. Two Afghan A-29 pilots disappeared in December 2015 while training at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. Before that, three Afghan officers who went missing in Cape Cod were found near Niagara Falls on the Canadian border. One of the officers was later granted asylum.

The first female Afghan pilot was also granted asylum after she continuously received death threats, according to the Wall Street Journal.

However, the phenomenon is neither new nor limited to Afghan Air Force trainees.

Nearly half of all foreign military trainees that went AWOL while training in the United States since 2005 was from Afghanistan (152 of 320),” SIGAR reported in October 2017.

“Of the 152 AWOL Afghan trainees, 83 either fled the United States after going AWOL or remain unaccounted for.”

#1  And the reason for bringing the student pilots to the Big PX as opposed to 'in-country' training ?

Perhaps the goal of bringing them here had little or nothing to do with aviation.

Setback for Tablighi Jamaat's plan to build terror linked ‘mega mosque' in London. Demolition still on
Good. Sense arises.
[Dawn] Tablighi Jamaat’s (TJ)

plan to build Europe’s biggest mosque in East London suffered another blow when a high court judge last week threw out their petition seeking suspension of an injunction for the demolition of a smaller mosque located on the site.

The high court judge also disallowed the TJ plea for an appeal against the judgement reviving chances of the demolition of existing structures starting within weeks.

Only a restraining order from the European Court of Human Rights, where trustees had filed an application in the second week of this month, can save Masjid Ilyas and stop council bulldozers rolling into the 17-acre land which remained under a chemical factory for a century before trustees of UK Tablighi Jamaat bought it in 1995 for 1.6 million pounds.

The Grand Turk
Election re-run could again delay Turkey’s economic reforms
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s long road to economic reform may have grown bumpier this week when authorities ordered a re-run of an Istanbul city election, further testing the patience of investors seeking a break with policies that triggered last year’s currency crisis.

After weeks of petitions and pressure from President Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party (AKP), which narrowly lost the city’s mayoralty in a March 31 vote, Turkey’s election board declared the results invalid and set a new vote for June 23.
and another later if AKP loses this next one...
The lira has tumbled 2.5 percent since the ruling late on Monday, reflecting worries that during the coming election campaign the government could again pursue short-term stimulus measures such as tax cuts and costly steps to support the currency.

The lira fell 30 percent last year when Turkey tipped into recession, and has lost another 16 percent so far this year. The waning confidence, driven in part by the AKP’s election challenges, is the single biggest hurdle to reviving an economy plagued by high inflation and companies’ foreign-currency debt.

"Re-running the elections is a negative development in that it extends this period of uncertainty," said Edward Parker, managing director overseeing Turkey at Fitch Ratings, which last week reaffirmed a junk ’BB’ rating on its sovereign debt.

Echoing that view, Wolfango Piccoli, co-president of Teneo political risk advisers, said: "The prospects for reforms were bleak before and they are even bleaker now after the cancellation of the mayoral election in Istanbul."

At the heart of Turkey’s economic malaise is years of cheap foreign funding that drove a construction-driven boom under Erdogan. Once the lira collapsed last year, firms could not pay off debts, which exposed their lenders and employees.

REFORM PLAN
After the AKP suffered painful election losses in Istanbul and the capital Ankara, Finance Minister Berat Albayrak
The Imperial Son-in-Law (Bow the Knee!)...
last month unveiled the first stage of a reform plan that includes a nearly $5 billion capital injection for state banks saddled with non-performing loans.

While the government is targeting tens of billions of dollars worth of bad loans in the energy and real estate sectors, it has provided few details of the plan.

Many analysts, wary of past reform promises that fell short, have been disappointed that more specific commitments were not made to boost exports in coming years and to emphasize the independence of the central bank to lower inflation from nearly 20 percent.

At a conference in Sarajevo on Wednesday, Cagatay Imirgi, Director-general of the undersecretariat of Turkey’s Treasury, said: "We need more time to show investors that policy is working." Albayrak, Erdogan’s son-in-law, had earlier cancelled a planned conference presentation on rebalancing the economy.

"There is a point where one asks whether Turkey will have continual setbacks like this - there could be other domestic political issues, and there are obviously international issues and many risks there with the US relationship," said Parker of Fitch Ratings.

"Eventually too many of these little setbacks can add up and prove costly," he said. Fitch has a ’negative’ outlook on Turkey’s rating.

Adding to the political uncertainty, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), whose candidate won the March vote in Istanbul, said on Wednesday it had formally requested the annulment of Erdogan’s presidential mandate and other poll results. It said the flaws Erdogan alleged in the Istanbul poll also occurred in last year’s national elections.

ally Turkey over its planned purchase of Russian S-400 missile defence systems. The shipment is expected to come just after the June 23 vote.

All of this "could be a perfect storm" for the lira, said Cristian Maggio, head of emerging markets strategy at TD Securities.

The re-run decision "concludes in the worst possible way an electoral saga that lasted for just over a month", he added.

Trudeau declines to say if Asia Bibi in Canada due to ‘security issues’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declined Wednesday to confirm whether Asia Bibi, the Christian woman at the center of a decade-long blasphemy row in Pakistain, has arrived in Canada.

"There are sensitive privacy issues and security issues on this and so I can’t comment," Trudeau told news hounds outside parliament after Bibi’s lawyer Saif ul Mulook and multiple security sources in Pakistain told AFP that Bibi had gone to Canada.

Bibi ‐ a laborer from Pakistain’s central Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

province ‐ was first convicted of blasphemy in 2010 and was on death row until her acquittal last year.

Her case has drawn worldwide attention to religious extremism in Pakistain, where the saga has sparked violent demonstrations and high-profile liquidations.

She has technically been free to leave Pakistain since January when the Supreme Court dismissed a legal challenge to her acquittal in October but awaited an asylum deal in a third country.

In November Trudeau said Ottawa was holding talks with Pakistain about bringing her to Canada.

On Wednesday British Prime Minister Theresa May appeared to confirm that Canada was her destination, saying its asylum offer was "right and appropriate."

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said in a statement that she had "safely reunited with her family."

Aasia Bibi leaves Pakistan, 'safely reunited' with family
[DAWN] Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman who was acquitted by the Supreme Court in a blasphemy case last year, has left Pakistain, a well-placed Foreign Office (FO) source told DawnNewsTV on Wednesday.

"Aasia Bibi has left the country. She is a free person and travelled on her independent will," the source said.
Good
The source did not specify what her destination was.

Agence La Belle France-Presse (AFP), quoting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, said Aasia Bibi has been reunited with her family.

"The United States welcomes the news that Aasia Bibi has safely reunited with her family," Pompeo said in a statement. "Aasia Bibi is now free, and we wish her and her family all the best following their reunification."

Aasia Bibi was acquitted of blasphemy charges by the Supreme Court on October 31, 2018, after spending nine years in jail on death row. The ruling sparked country-wide protests by religio-political groups.

After she was released from a Multan

women's prison on November 7 last year, she was flown to Islamabad via special aircraft, and then taken to an undisclosed location amid tight security.

The authorities remained tight-lipped about her movement and whereabouts for security reasons.

Qari Salam, the complainant in the case, filed a petition seeking review of the judgement in January this year, which the Supreme Court dismissed on merit.

LHC reserves judgement on bail pleas filed by TLP chief Khadim Rizvi, Pir Afzal Qadri
[DAWN] The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday reserved its verdict on bail pleas filed by Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistain chief Khadim Rizvi and former TLP patron-in-chief Pir Afzal Qadri, and rejected an apology submitted by Qadri over incendiary remarks made by him during a protest against the Supreme Court's acquittal of Aasia Bibi.

Rizvi and Qadri were taken into "protective custody" by the state during a crackdown in November 2018 after the TLP announced it would observe deaders’ day on Nov 25, 2018. The arrests followed weeks after the TLP led three-day protests across the country against Aasia Bibi's acquittal.

The lawyers from both sides completed their arguments before the two-member bench headed by Justice Qasim Ali Khan today.

Court rejects Qadri's apology
The LHC had, in a May 7 hearing, directed Pir Afzal Qadri to submit a "detailed apology" for his controversial remarks after it found his initial public apology missing some key details.

When asked to define the "harsh words" Qadri had admitted to using in his apology, his lawyer Hafeezur Rehman Chaudhry said that according to the court record, the former TLP leader had said that the three judges [who acquitted Aasia Bibi] were liable to be killed, that Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the brightest knife in the national drawer...
is a Zionist agent and that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Javed Qamar Bajwa's orders were not to be accepted.

Qadri, who had been booked under sedition and terrorism charges, had resigned from the TLP on May 1 citing health issues and, on the court's earlier directions, issued a public apology for his remarks.

"When the verdict of the Aasia Masih case was pronounced, my religious sentiments were hurt and I delivered a speech. I am very sorry for hurting the sentiments of the government, the judiciary and the chief of army staff," he had said.

At the outset, the court directed Qadri's lawyer to provide a straightforward written apology or accept a decision based on merit. Both judges raised questions over various aspects of the apology as it was shared with the court.

Justice Qasim, taking a critical view of the apology, said this way anyone could issue treasonous statements whenever they like, and then try to apologise by claiming that they were not thinking straight at the time.

"Why are they [such people] nurtured in laps, why are they not sent to psychiatric hospitals?" he asked.

Justice Asjad Javed Ghural pointed out that the written apology submitted in court used the word mansoob for the remarks issued by Qadri.

"Why did the written apology use the word 'attributed'?" he asked the lawyer, noting that it amounted to manipulation of language.

When Qadri's lawyer told the court that the education of many children had been impacted by the proceedings against his client, Justice Qasim wondered "what education must this man provide?"

"Such pirs should be hanged. They are ruining society," Justice Qasim remarked.

FO summons India's Deputy High Commissioner to protest fresh ceasefire violations
[DAWN] Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal on Wednesday summoned the Indian deputy high commissioner to lodge a protest against fresh ceasefire violations on the Line of Control on May 2 and May 5, according to a blurb issued by the FO today.

In his meeting with High Commissioner Gaurav Ahluwalia, Dr Faisal condemned India's use of force, which resulted in the death of three people on the Pak side.

On May 2, cross border firing in the Rakhchikri sector had caused the death of a 15-year-old boy, Tahir Hafeez, while his 9-year-old sister Tahira had sustained serious injuries.

Iraq
Detaining families of ISIS members is unlawful, says HRW
That’s certainly one opinion...
(IraqiNews) Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that the Iraqi plan to arrest 280,000 people, who are alleged to be the families of ISIS members is illegal, while pointed out that the majority of these families are women and kiddies.
Don’t lets forget that att least some of those women were enforcers for ISIS, and at least some of those kiddies were brainwashed to be Lion Cubs of Islam.
HRW called the Iraqi government to stop the plan, while revealed in a report published, today, that the plan was submitted by Iraq’s Implementation and Follow Up National Reconciliation Committee in Iraq to Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi.

The report quoted Lama Fakih, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch saying, "The Iraqi government proposal to confine alleged families of ISIS members not only violates international law but is also contrary to the government’s stated aim of reconciling populations post-ISIS."

She also added, "Detaining families not accused of any crimes is a form of collective punishment that will fuel resentment and put the lives of thousands of people on endless hold."

Furthermore, the HRW stated that in a meeting on April 7, the committee’s president, Dr. Mohammed Salman al-Saadi, shared the plan’s draft it, and he said that it would affect all spouses, children, siblings, and parents of alleged ISIS members, whether the member is dead, disappeared, or in detention. Human Rights Watch raised its concerns with the proposal in letters to Abdul-Mahdi and President Barham Salih last Month.

It also pointed out that al-Saadi said that the Ministry of Immigration will build compounds outside the cities to accommodate the families of ISIS, while indicated that the families who will be detained there will be allowed to leave only in certain circumstances, such as going to the hospital or to courthouse.

He also mentioned that the "Sunni Endowment" will participate in this plan through the provision of mandatory programs to end extremism, while added that the Iraqi forces will guard these compounds.

#1  HRW don't understand the Iraqi mindset then, or the dynami between sunni factions. All this os being done to simply re-assimilate the female ex-ISIS volunteers and their offspring into Iraqi society.

There will be some rudimentary 're-education', a few curbs and supervised living conditions for a few years, but then it's going to be back to the 'iraqi normal'.

If the world's governments really wanted to make a statement against sunni extremism they would have made an example out of ISIS by executing every POW from the war, every willing member of ISIS. The kiddies could have been re-assimilated through child protection and camps for the same.

Israel will 'not allow' nuclear-armed Iran: Netanyahu

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] After two sleepless days and nights of Israeli shelling and Paleostinian rocket fire, Gazooks on Monday faced a first day of Ramadan overshadowed by funerals and the grim task of pulling bodies from collapsed buildings.
Life is tough. It's tougher if you're an extended tribe of truculent butt holes.
As dawn brought a ceasefire of uncertain duration, few Paleostinians in the impoverished coastal enclave were focusing on the sundown feast that is traditionally the highlight of the day during the Moslem holy month.

At Gazoo City’s largest hospital, Shifa, relatives of the 21 Paleostinians killed on Sunday - including 12 civilians - arrived to collect bodies for burial and prayers.

Outside, workers set about rebuilding power and phone lines devastated by the Israeli bombardment, which also razed entire tower blocks, leaving rubble strewn across the ground.

Other babus government employees lined up at banks to draw out money they had been unable to collect during the hostilities.

Israeli teen held over Palestinian woman’s death moved to house arrest
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Tel Aviv court has authorized an Israeli teenager held in jail over a Paleostinian woman’s death to be transferred to house arrest pending his trial, the justice ministry said Wednesday.

The 16-year-old, who as a minor cannot be named, is accused of having caused the death of a Paleostinian mother, Aisha al-Rabi, by hurling a heavy rock at the windscreen of her car on October 12 south of Hebron in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

His DNA was found on the rock.

The youth, a pupil of a religious school in the nearby Jewish settlement of Rehalim, has been charged with homicide motivated by hatred of Arabs.

alongside him and questioned at the end of December.

The victim’s husband, Yacoub al-Rabi, condemned the court’s decision to release the charged suspect as emblematic of Israeli double standards.

"If the accused had been a Paleostinian, they would have demolished his home and left his family without a roof over their heads," he told AFP, referring to Israel’s practice of destroying the family home of anti-Israeli assailants.

"I’ve never heard of a Paleostinian minor accused of homicide being sent to his room," he said.

#1  Heh heh... children throw rocks all the time.

It can be argued that the rock was thrown at a car and not at a person. And no different from the rocks thrown during intifad attacks.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka tourism takes a hit after bombings
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Sri Lanka’s $4.4 billion tourism industry is reeling from cancellations as travelers shun the sun and sand Indian Ocean island after multiple suicide kabooms that killed over 250 people two weeks ago.

Suspected jacket wallahs from little-known groups in Sri Lanka attacked churches and luxury hotels in the country on Easter Sunday, killing worshippers, tourists and their families. ISIS grabbed credit for the attacks.

Tourism, which accounts for five percent of the country’s gross domestic product, has suffered as tourists from around the world cancelled hotel and flight bookings fearing more attacks.

"It’s a big blow to the economy, as well as the tourism industry," Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said in an interview on Saturday. "For the economy to develop, it’s important tourism return to where it was before the attacks."

Net hotel bookings dropped a staggering 186 percent on average over the week following the attacks compared to the same period last year, data from travel consultancy ForwardKeys showed. A decline of more than one hundred percent indicates more cancellations than bookings.

Cancellation rates at hotels across the country averaged 70 percent as of Saturday, with the capital Colombo taking a bigger hit, Sri Lanka’s Tourism Bureau Chairman Kishu Gomes told Rooters.

"Some airlines have also discontinued frequency of flights. Load factor is much lower than it used to be," Gomes said. "It is a worrying factor for sure."

Tourism took off in Sri Lanka, which boasts of a 1,600-km (1,000-mile) long coastline, following the end of the decades-long civil war with Tamil separatists in 2009. It was Sri Lanka’s third largest and fastest growing source of foreign currency last year.

Decisive policy and security measures will be important to revive the industry and support economic growth, the International Monetary Fund has said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran accuses US of carrying out ‘psychological warfare’
[DAWN] Iran’s top security body dismissed as "psychological warfare" a US announcement that a carrier strike group and bombers are being sent to the Middle East as a message to Tehran, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday.

Tensions rose on the eve of the anniversary of the US withdrawal from world powers’ 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. Tehran is likely to revive part of its halted nuclear programme on Wednesday in response to the US move but does not plan to pull out of the agreement itself, state media said.

US national security adviser John Bolton said the United States was deploying the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and a bomber task force to the Middle East in a warning over alleged threats by Iranian forces.

"Bolton’s statement is a clumsy use of a burnt-out happening for (the purpose of) psychological warfare," Tasnim quoted Keyvan Khosravi, front man for the Supreme National Security Council, as saying. Khosravi said the carrier had arrived in the Mediterranean weeks ago.

Doctors go underground as Syrian government attacks rebels
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian doctors have pulled back into cave shelters to treat the maimed and protect their patients from a government offensive that has hit health centers and hospitals in northern Syria’s last rebel enclave.

The assault began in late April with air strikes, barrel bombs, and shelling against the southern flank of the enclave.

The attack centered on Idlib province, an area nominally under the protection of a Russian-Ottoman Turkish ceasefire, which was agreed on more than eight months ago.

Limited ground advances have additionally taken place this week.

"The makeshift hospitals are very primitive," Osama al-Shami, a 36-year-old doctor, told Rooters. "We can barely save lives with the equipment we have, and many of the injured die because of the lack of resources and equipment."

Pompeo: Iran nuclear announcement ‘intentionally ambiguous’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iran’s announcement that it had stopped respecting limits on its nuclear activities agreed under a 2015 deal was “intentionally ambiguous”, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a visit to London on Wednesday.

“I think it was intentionally ambiguous... We’ll have to wait and see what Iran’s actions actually are” before deciding the US response, Pompeo said after a meeting with British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt.

#1  As a globalist, I *love* intentionally ambiguous agreements. I can virtue-signal about what wonderful things I'm doing for humanity and the planet, and since no one is under any actual obligation to do anything specific, it is easy to get all parties to commit. See the Paris Climate Accord for a fine example.

UN Security Council to meet on Friday regarding Syria’s Idlib
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The UN Security Council will meet Friday to discuss the escalation of fighting in Syria’s northwestern region of Idlib, where hospitals and schools have been hit by strikes, diplomats said.

Belgium, Germany and Kuwait, three non-permanent council members, requested the closed-door meeting on Wednesday after Russia and the Syrian government stepped up their bombardments on Idlib.

The three countries are leading the council’s efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Syria, now in its ninth year of war.

Since April 29, 12 health facilities including two major hospitals have been hit in northwest Syria, according to the World Health Organization.

About three million people live in Idlib, the last major bastion to remain outside the control of the Syrian government.

Council members will hear a briefing from UN humanitarian officials on the surge in violence that has sent more than 150,000 people fleeing in one week alone.

The meeting is scheduled for 10.00 am (1400 GMT) on Friday.

to set up a de-escalation zone in Idlib.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday urged warring sides to protect civilians and to re-commit to a ceasefire agreed in September 2018.

On Monday, the violence killed 43 fighters and five civilians, according to the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor.

Washington school district wants teachers to bless Muslim students in Arabic during Ramadan, religious liberty group claims
[FoxNews] A religious liberty advocacy group is threatening to slap a Seattle-area school district with a lawsuit claiming the district has urged teachers to bless Muslim students in Arabic during the holy month of Ramadan and give them preferential treatment, including skipping tests.

The Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund (FCDF) claims the Dieringer School District is officially endorsing Islam and is following a script by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) that urges schools to make special accommodations for Muslim students and to wish them "Ramadan Mubarak," which means "Happy Ramadan," or "Ramadan Kareem," which means "Have a generous Ramadan."

The CAIR guidelines also instruct teachers to monitor Muslim students fasting and suggests teachers not schedule any tests on the Islamic holidays of Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

“By urging teachers to bless Muslim students in Arabic, the district is running roughshod over the First Amendment’s mandate of government neutrality toward religion,” said Daniel Piedra, FCDF’s executive director. “A school district would never order teachers to ‘welcome’ Catholic students during Easter with ‘He is risen, alleluia!’ Singling out Muslim students for special treatment is blatantly unconstitutional.”

The defense fund claims Dieringer Superintendent Judy Martinson blindly followed the recommendations of CAIR and "enacted the letter as official district policy." The defense fund sent Martinson a letter stating their complaints after a teacher and parent complained about the new procedure.

The May 6 letter also warned Martinson about CAIR's anti-semitic advocacy and alleged ties to radical Islamists, which the group has long denied.
