US hails talks with Taliban, denies troop withdrawal window
[DAWN] The latest round of talks with the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
‐ now in their second week and paused for two days ‐ has been "very productive," a US negotiator said, and denied Washington sought a fixed deadline for the withdrawal of its estimated 14,000 troops from Afghanistan as part of a final peace deal in the 17-year-old war.

The talks are being paused while another summit with Afghan representatives takes place, a Taliban front man said on Saturday.

Suhail Shaheen, the front man for the Taliban's office in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
, said they were pleased with progress in the talks.

"Tomorrow and the day after, because of the intra-Afghan conference, no talks will take place," Shaheen tweeted, referring to separate talks due to start Sunday in Doha between the Taliban and Afghan delegates.

"We are happy with progress and hope the rest of the work is also done. We have not faced any obstacles yet," he added.

Negotiations picked up momentum after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, at the end of last month. He said then that Washington was hopeful of an agreement before September 1.

Haftar Forces Say Shot Down Unity Government Plane
[AnNahar] Troops loyal to Libyan military strongman Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
said they shot down a plane belonging to forces loyal to the rival unity government, which acknowledged losing contact with one of its aircraft.

Haftar's front man Ahmad al-Mesmari said Thursday night an L39 Albatros was shot down near the town of Tarhuna, a rear base of the self-styled Libyan National Army located 80 kilometres (50 miles) southeast of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
GNA forces, under attack around Tripoli by Haftar's forces since early April, said they had lost contact with an air force L39 that was on a combat mission south of the capital.

There was no word on the crew's fate.

The two rival camps, locked in battle on the ground, have both lost several planes in the past three months of fighting.

#5  Is there a definable 'better' side in this squabble or is this just another of those "can they both lose" situations?
Posted by: AlanC || 07/07/2019 13:24 Comments || Top||

#6  Haftar is the 'better' side here. Sworn to total destruction of the Muslim Brotherhood, Haftar has support of Libya's military and some militias too, for multiple reasons of their own. For now, the agenda is to get rid of anti-democratic islamist groups.

As we have all come to see, if not understand, every dictator, authoritarian, oligarch seems to fervently desire democracy for his country. That magical cauldron of legislators, houses, departments and ministries out of which come laws and ordinances establishing immutable authorities. The word that gives legitimacy to any whim and fancy of a group, and the people swallow it as having come from their mandate given to their 'representative'. That should explain Haftar's personal reasons.
he appears to be force against islamization and the proliferation of armed rag-head sasquatches. He believes in a democratic govt and constitution oriented society, with no room for sharia in it; but all this could change I suppose. The main thing is, that he is a good pain the ass to islamist groups, fundamentalist pressure groups and supporters of Hezbollah and Hamas. If Haftar stays in power, he should prove useful to the US and Israel. After all, the US sheltered him for years. He was an investment by the CIA in a future challenger to Ghaddafi. He has paid a good dividend to you since 2014, and continues to keep the pressure on for the numerous islamic factions.

He refused when the UN Yupp. Them again sponsored a resolution calling for a ceasefire and talks with GNA Govt of National Accord, an UN sponsored interim government. This transitional government, which preceded the GNC, General National Congress, co-opted militias to fill the security vacuum left by Ghaddafi loyalists. These militias affiliated later with Al quaeda, ISIS and Hamas to challenge and commandeer state institutions of Libya for their own use

Trump is known to have personally called him and congratulated him, offering behind-the-scenes assistance. Of course, Haftar continues to receive assistance from not only the CIA, but also the UAE, Russia and Egypt.

I believe it's a case of 'lesser evil' as always.

UN Calls for Libya Ceasefire as Death Toll Climbs to 1,000
[AnNahar] The UN Security Council called Friday for a ceasefire in Libya as the corpse count from a three-month offensive on Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
reached 1,000, including scores killed in an air strike that hit a detention centre for migrants colonists.

The council condemned the late Tuesday attack on the Tajoura detention camp east of Tripoli and "stressed the need for all parties to urgently de-escalate the situation and to commit to a ceasefire", said a joint statement.

Europe
German rescue ship heads to Malta after Italy blocks Lampedusa port
[DW] Sea-Eye said its rescue ship Alan Kurdi will sail to Malta due to deteriorating conditions on board. They have called on Europe
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
to intervene in Italia's hard-line measures, saying "human lives are not a bargaining chip."

Italia has banned humanitarian vessels rescuing migrants colonists off the coast of Libya access from live-saving ports.

Sea-Eye's Marcel Ditt, who is on board the Alan Kurdi, told DW on Saturday that the boat's crew had rescued 65 migrants colonists, many of them unaccompanied minors.

The Alan Kurdi rescued the migrants colonists off the coast of Libya but refused to port in the North African country, saying the country wasn't safe and that international law required those rescued be brought to a safe port.

The Sea-Eye's decision to head to Malta comes hours after an Italian rescue ship of the humanitarian group Mediterranea disobeyed Italian orders and made port in Lampedusa.
There seems to be some confusion about who is doing what. The Jerusalem Post reports:
A migrant rescue boat docked at the port of Lampedusa on Saturday in defiance of a ban on entering Italian waters, the second NGO vessel to clash with Italian authorities in a week.

The sailboat Alex, carrying 41 migrants, declined a Maltese offer to go to Malta, as the Mediterranea NGO operating it said such a long journey would have been dangerous for the people aboard.

The boat docked at the same quay where a week ago another charity vessel collided with an Italian police boat when it decided to bring migrants ashore after two weeks in international waters.

If it was safe enough for them to embark from Libya then it is safe enough for them to return to it. And, BTW, why is it that Tripoli is no longer considered safe? Hmmmm. And if no place in Africa is safe then how safe is it to allow Africans to colonize Europe?

I never get tired of this picture because it shows so well the duplicity and treachery of the EU leadership.

#2  Mediterranea is not a single NGO. It's a platform of 'different initiatives of the civil society' , several NGOs that have been hitherto blacklisted and marked dangerous by Italy and other countries. One of these NGOs is Proactiva Open Arms, a Soros funded group.

India-Pakistan
Suspected terrorist makes bail
[DAWN] A single-member Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court bench has granted bail to a man suspected of waging war against the state and carrying out terrorist activities.

Justice Mussarat Hilali accepted the bail petition of the accused, Arshad Khan, a resident of Jamrud in Khyber tribal district, asking him to produce two surety bonds of Rs200,000 each.

The petitioner was taken into custody by the security forces in Oct 2016 and was kept in detention under the Action (in aid of civil power) Regulation, 2011.

He was handed over to the administration of Khyber tribal district on Oct 22, 2018 and was charged under Pakistain Penal Code’s Section 121 (waging war against the state) and Section 122 (raising arms against the state), and Section 17 of the Action (in aid of civil power) Regulation, 2011.

His bail petition was rejected by an anti-terrorism court.

The petitioner’s counsel, Shabbir Hussain Gigyani, said while his client was handed over to Khyber region’s administration, the security forces had provided a report of a joint investigation team (JIT) levelling several charges against him, including attacks on security forces and beheading of the members of peace committee.
The petitioner’s counsel, Shabbir Hussain Gigyani, said while his client was handed over to Khyber region’s administration, the security forces had provided a report of a joint investigation team (JIT) levelling several charges against him, including attacks on security forces and beheading of the members of peace committee.

He said though the security agencies didn’t provide any evidence regarding the involvement of the petitioner in acts of terrorism, they recommended award of 48 years imprisonment to him. The lawyer said not a single piece of evidence could be produced against the petitioner except the so-called report of JIT, which could not be relied upon.

Mr Shabbir Gigyani questioned how a person could be kept imprisoned merely on the basis of a report not backed by evidence.

Also, the bench granted bail to a man charged by the counter terrorism department with possessing two hand grenades, a four kilogrammes improvised bomb, safety fuses, and detonators. It directed the petitioner, Waseem Khan, to furnish two surety bonds valuing Rs100,000 each.

Strike suspends trade via Torkham
[DAWN] The trade between Pakistain and Afghanistan via Torkham border came to a halt on Friday after local traders and custom clearing agents went on an indefinite strike against the alleged high-handedness of customs and National Logistic Cell officials.

Hundreds of vehicles loaded with export and import goods were stranded on both sides of the border due to the refusal of the clearing agents and traders to clear their consignments.

Sources told Dawn that the custom officials tried to persuade protesters to end their strike by giving them verbal assurances about the resolution of their problems but the clearing agents and traders demanded a written assurance from them.

Accountability judge 'blackmailed' into issuing verdict against Nawaz: Maryam
[DAWN] PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz on Saturday came out with explosive claims regarding the trial that led to her father, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...
, being convicted and sentenced to prison, saying the entire judicial process was severely compromised.

At a presser in Lahore alongside the top leadership of the PML-N, Maryam played a secretly recorded video that she claimed featured a conversation between Nasir Butt, a man she described as a loyal fan of her father, and Accountability Judge Arshad Malik, who had in December last year sentenced Nawaz to seven years in jail in the al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference and acquitted him in the Flagship Investment case. The presser comes exactly a year after Nawaz and Maryam were handed prison terms in the Avenfield reference.

Maryam alleged that the judge had contacted Nasir and told him that he was feeling "guilt" and "having nightmares" after announcing the "unjust" verdict against Nawaz, so he invited Nasir for a meeting at his residence, where the video was recorded.

In the video, which she termed as "divine help" for her family, Maryam claimed that Judge Malik had pointed out the flaws in Nawaz's corruption trial that he wanted to be conveyed to Nawaz's lawyers. The judge acknowledged that he had been "blackmailed" and "pressured" into issuing a judgement against the PML-N supremo, Maryam claimed.

The veracity of the contents of the video or any of the claims made by Maryam have not been independently verified by Dawn.com.

She claimed that Judge Malik told Nasir that he had been taken to an unspecified place by some people ‐ whom Maryam did not name ‐ who left him alone in a room and played for him a "personal" video of his on a TV screen nearby. Maryam refused to disclose what was in the alleged video, but claimed this video of an "immoral" nature was used to "blackmail" the judge into issuing an adverse judgement against Nawaz.
"Gigli"
She quoted the judge as saying that he even contemplated "suicide" because of the pressure he was under. He was also surprised to learn how "they" had managed to get a hold of a 10 years old video, she added.

Maryam claimed that the judge could be heard saying in the video that Nawaz was convicted even though "there is no allegation of financial corruption" in the case. "There is no evidence that any money was taken from any department," she quoted Judge Malik as saying.

Iraq
Reporting of Ambassador to US remarks on Palestine-Israel 'inappropriate': Iraq FM
[Rudaw] The Foreign Ministry of Iraq on Saturday defended its Ambassador to the United States Fareed Yasseen's recent comments on Paleostine and Israel, claiming he has been "inappropriately" quoted by the media.

"Countries and media give special importance to the Paleostine issue which is a key focus of conferences and meetings attended by our representatives and delegations abroad. Sometimes they or their full expression gets cut and there were some people distorting the principled position of Iraq," FM spokesperson Ahmed al-Sahaf said in a statement.

The foreign ministry did not name the outlet(s) it claims misrepresented Yasseen's comments. However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
this week video clips on social media showed him speaking with state-run al-Iraqiya (IMN) TV.

"We reiterate that the position of Iraq on the Paleostinian issue is the same principled, historical position which rejects Israeli invasion and the rape of Arab land. Additionally, we do not establish any relations with the occupying state and we stand by our principle of boycott," the FM statement added.

Yasseen seemed to argue for some sort of relations between Baghdad and Tel Aviv in the video.

"There are objective reasons that call for the erection of relations between Iraq and Israel, including the presence of a significant Iraqi community in Israel," he said in the video released this week.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
he also acknowledged that objective factors are not enough to establish official ties with Israel because there are "moral and legal reasons which Iraqis comply with."
When I think "Moral and Legal", Iraqi pols aren't the first thing I think of...
Just two questions were asked in the five-minute clip. The video is not available on IMN's website.

Iraq officially has never recognized Israel since it declared independence in 1948 and was admitted into the United Nations

as a member in the following year. Iraq recognized the State of Paleostine in 1988. Paleostine has observer status in the United Nations.

Jews have long and enduring roots in what is now present-day Iraq and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. The Iraqi federal government and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) are forbidden from having diplomatic relations with Israel; however, cultural ties remain and the KRG has an office for a representative of the Jewish community in its Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs.

Between 1948 and 1951, more than 121,000 Jews left Iraq for the Holy Land in the so-called Operation Ezra and Nehemiah as Israel airlifted tens of thousands of Jews following the Iraqi government's intensified persecution following the establishment of the State of Israel.

Iraqi tensions flared in June when people stormed the Bahrain Kingdom's embassy in Baghdad. They were protesting the 'Peace for Prosperity' conference held by Jared Kushner in Bahrain. Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump

is a senior White House advisor and tried to use to forum to advance an Israel-Paleostine peace plan via investment.

Iraq denies arrival of new batch of U.S. soldiers at military base
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ An Iraqi operations command denied on Saturday news reports about the deployment of more U.S. soldiers at the Ein al-Assad base in Anbar province.

"All media reports about the arrival of a new batch of U.S. troops at the Ein al-Assad base are baseless and lack credibility," the Arabic-language Baghdad Today website quoted Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool, front man for the Joint Operations Command, as saying.

Rasool further called on media outlets to take information only from reliable sources and not to depend on social networking websites.

Tensions have risen recently between Washington and Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan, the abbreviation IRGC is a cognate form of Stürmabteilung (or SA), the term Supreme Guide is a cognate form of either Shah or Führer or maybe both, and they hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
as the U.S. administration sent bombers and aircraft carriers to the Middle East to counter what it described as potential threats against U.S interests from Iran.

Tehran responded with warnings that it was ready to counter American threats.

The uneasy atmosphere prompted a number of Western countries to announce withdrawal of some of their military or civilian workers in Iraq.

Estimates put the number of U.S. troops at Ain al-Assad at 5000.

Syria Kurds host conference on IS detainees
[AlAhram] Dozens of international experts gathered in northeastern Syria on Saturday to discuss how to manage thousands of suspected Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group members crammed into Kurdish-run prisons and camps.

French lawyers and US-based analysts were among those attending the three-day conference on the challenges still facing the region after IS's territorial defeat, organisers said.

Officials of the autonomous Kurdish administration in northeastern Syria, which is hosting the conference in the town of Amuda, were also due to take part.
