Afghanistan
US Has Suspended Assistance Operations in Ghor: Miller
[ToloNews] The US Department of State spokesperson said that Washington has suspended operations in Ghor province following "evidence of continued attempts by the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
" to divert assistance.
I’m shocked. Not that the Taliban would steal it, but that the Biden administration would actually show some spine.
Speaking to news hounds in Washington D.C., the US State Department’s Spokesman Mathew Miller also said that the World Food Program halted distribution in two districts of Ghazni province from January to April, when local officials attempted to interfere in distribution.

"In April, another US government partner suspended activities in Uruzgan province after the Taliban issued demands to provide transportation support to Taliban representatives ... We have been very clear. We don’t provide funding for the Taliban and we have a very strict monitoring and compliance process in place for the partner with which we do work," he said.

"The Islamic Emirate has the control of the whole country. And there is no doubt that they also have access to this money," said Seyar Qureshi, an economist.

Miller said that the State Department and US Agency for International and Development (USAID) worked with all partners to provide basic needs assistance to the people of Afghanistan.

"The State Department and USAID continue to work with the World Bank, with the UN, with NGOs and other implementing partners and like-minded governments to provide humanitarian basic needs assistance to the people of Afghanistan. Not to the Taliban," Miller said.

This comes as the Ministry of Economy (MoE) said that the suspension of some aid by the US will damage Afghanistan.

"The suspension of aid will damage the people of Afghanistan and it will cause livelihood challenges and so we demand that the US release the money of the people of Afghanistan," said Abdul Latif Nazari, the deputy Minister of Economy.

"The reduction of aid by the US is kind of a pressure tactic on the Taliban and it can also be because of the lack of a formation of an inclusive government which is in favor of the US and West," said Sayed Masoud, an economist.

Earlier, speaking to the US House Oversight Committee, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconciliation (SIGAR) John Sopko testified that he cannot say whether the US assistance is currently not "funding the Taliban."

Taliban Effort To Resurrect Afghan Air Force Runs Into Turbulence
[RFERL] Afghanistan's hard-line Islamist Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
rulers are keen on showcasing their government's military prowess by frequently displaying repaired helicopters and planes from the country's inventory of aging aircraft.

Muller says that, based on photos and videos, the Taliban now has approximately 50 operational planes and helicopters.
But the once ragtag Death Eater group that relied on small arms, rocket launchers, roadside kabooms, and jacket wallahs to wage war for a quarter century is struggling to get its dreams of building a modern air force off the ground.

Sudan’s RSF received surface-to-air missiles from Russia’s Wagner: US
Russia’s Wagner Group has recently provided Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) with surface-to-air missiles, the US said Thursday as it rolled out new sanctions against the Russian mercenary group.

“Most recently in Sudan, the Wagner Group has been supplying Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces with surface-to-air missiles to fight against Sudan’s army, contributing to a prolonged armed conflict that only results in further chaos in the region,” the Treasury Department said in a statement.

For the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

The accusations came in the same statement that announced US sanctions against the head of Russia’s Wagner Group in Mali.

Earlier this week, the US declassified information revealing that the group was trying to procure weapons for the Kremlin from Africa, specifically Mali.

Washington has accused the Wagner Group of meddling in and destabilizing multiple African countries while committing human rights abuses and appropriating natural resources.

“As Russia’s military has struggled on the battlefield, Putin has resorted to relying on the Wagner Group to continue his war of choice,” the Treasury Department said.

A fragile ceasefire brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia has seen decreased violence but not a complete halt. The State Department said Thursday that the monitoring mechanism recorded possible ceasefire breaches.

Sudan’s army and the RSF have been engaged in clashes for several weeks as the two sides fight for control of the government.

Arabia
Sana'a warns coalition to cease seeking balkanization of Yemen
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Sana’a has threatened to take appropriate military measures against the Saudi-led coalition’s hostile movements, which are aimed at harming the security and stability of Yemen’s southern and eastern governorates.

A member of Ansarullah’s political bureau, Mohammed Nasser al-Bukhaiti, said on Twitter: “We believe in unity on a voluntary basis. So, we do not need to raise the slogan of unity or death nor to raise weapons to impose unity by force.”

“The unity is protected by the will of the people from Saada to Mahrah,” he said, noting that the external military movements to occupy Yemen and dismantle it by the coalition’s countries will inevitably be responded to with weapons at home and abroad.

This comes after escalating calls to divide Yemen’s southern and eastern provinces into mini-states that serve the foreign agendas and projects of the UAE and Saudi Arabia, amid widespread popular rejection of what is happening in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.

Saudi Arabia seeks to separate Hadhramaut and make it independent from the UAE’s proxy in Yemen, the Southern Transitional Council (STC) militia, which calls for secession and a return of southern Yemen to the pre-national unity borders of May 22, 1990.

Belgium, Iran Conduct Prisoner Swap in Oman
A Belgian aid worker jailed in Iran and an Iranian diplomat imprisoned in Belgium were freed on Friday in an exchange mediated by Oman, both sides said.

Oman's Foreign Ministry said that “those released were transferred from Tehran and Brussels to Muscat today, Friday, in preparation for their return to their countries.” It added that "the Sultanate of Oman appreciated the high positive spirit that prevailed in the talks in Muscat between the Iranian and Belgian sides, and their keenness to settle this humanitarian issue.”

Aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele was arrested on a visit to Iran in February 2022 and sentenced in January to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes on charges including spying.

Iranian diplomat Asadollah Assadi was convicted in Belgium in 2021 in connection with a foiled bomb plot in France and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Both countries rejected the charges against their citizen as fabricated.

"As I speak, Belgium's Olivier Vandecasteele is on his way to Belgium. If all goes to plan, he'll be with us this evening. Free at last," Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said in on Friday.

"Last night Olivier was flown to Oman where he was looked after by a team of Belgian soldiers and diplomats. This morning he underwent a number of medical examinations to assess his state of health and to enable him to return in the best possible conditions", De Croo added.

Iranian state TV reported that Assadi had arrived back in Tehran and showed him sitting with officials including government spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi.

Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said is scheduled to travel to Iran on Sunday for a two-day visit.

Ma'rib mercenaries reject offer by Sana'a for prisoner information swap
by Emad Almarshahi

The head of the National Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs, Abdul Qadir Al-Murtadha, confirmed that the US-Saudi mercenaries in Ma’rib rejected an offer to discover the fate of the leader of the “Islah” party, in exchange for revealing the fate of a group of prisoners.

Al-Murtadha wrote on Twitter: “We were informed by the United Nations that the mercenaries of Ma’rib rejected the offer made by us to disclose the fate of Muhammad Qahtan in exchange for them disclosing a group of prisoners and detainees in their prisons.”

Al-Murtadha stressed that this behavior indicates that the mercenaries do not want to know the fate of Qahtan, but they attempt to obstruct this humanitarian issue and to thwart all efforts made to complete the agreed-upon exchanges.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
ISIS Wives in Syria’s Roj Camp Face Consequences for Husbands’ Actions
Located in northeastern Syria, Camp Roj is home to families and relatives of individuals associated with the notorious terrorist organization ISIS. Within this encampment, women and mothers find solace amidst their daily routines, sheltered under tents embellished with the emblem of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Their future remains uncertain as they patiently await the resolution of their destinies. In this desolate setting, the passage of time has become inconsequential, as evening merges seamlessly with daylight.

At Camp Roj, inhabitants are grappling with a prolonged pause in their lives and carry the weight of their memories and endure the painful revisiting of bygone moments.

The narratives of their journeys to Syria exhibit a remarkable resemblance.

For ISIS wives, when their husbands committed to joining the ranks of the extremist organization, their families were compelled to accompany them, bracing themselves for the repercussions.

When we carefully examine the daily lives of these women and mothers at Camp Roj and compare them to their previous normal lives in their home countries, it becomes clear that everything is different.

Located in the outskirts of the town of Al-Malikiyah in the Al-Hasakah province, Camp Roj is home to approximately 600 families, totaling around 2,500 individuals.

Among those individuals are Iraqi refugees, displaced Syrians, as well as foreign families of former ISIS fighters hailing from Western and Arab nations.

Asharq Al-Awsat visited this heavily guarded camp and conducted exclusive interviews with a Moroccan, an Egyptian, an Uzbek, and an Iraqi woman.

Most of the women who participated in this investigation expressed their struggles in obtaining sufficient funds to meet their basic needs.

They also lamented the difficulty of accessing clean drinking water, as well as the lack of hygiene, medical care, counseling, education, and proper nutrition.

These women are living within the confines of closed walls and surveillance cameras.

Shuruq, a Moroccan woman hailing from the city of Tetouan, shared her story of spending eight years in several Syrian cities that were subjected to bombings and destruction.

Eventually, she found herself seeking refuge under a tent that offers no protection from the winter cold or the scorching heat of summer.

Today, she bears the responsibility of raising orphaned children after their father, who brought them to this volatile corner of the Middle East, was killed.

“I never decided the fate of my life. I lived the life of my family, then the life of my husband, and now I am a widow at this age... I live each day as written by destiny,” said Shuruq.

The 36-year-old widow recounted her escape from areas under the control of ISIS in mid-2017 following the death of her husband.

“My husband chose to join the organization, and after his death, we had no remaining ties to it. We fled towards areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and sought refuge in the camp,” she told Asharq Al-Awsat.

She pointed out that one of the main obstacles preventing women like her from returning to their home countries is the presence of children born in Syria with multiple nationalities.

“My children were born in Morocco, and in my case, there is no legal conflict due to having dual nationality, mixed marriage or giving birth to children in Syria. I don't understand why Morocco hesitates to repatriate us when I am a widow and a mother to orphans.”

“When my mental state deteriorates, day and night become indistinguishable, and the daily routine becomes a blur,” said Shuruq about her daily struggle.

“Sometimes I prepare breakfast for my children at 9 in the morning, and on other days, it's at 3 in the afternoon because time holds no value,” she revealed, adding that she is living in burden.

Washington opens a terrorist second front against Russia
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

by Kirill Semenov

One of the leaders of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terrorist group, which holds the Syrian Idlib, Abu Maria al-Qahtani , said that the HTS intends to focus on confrontation with Iran, and hence Russia, which act as allies Syrian government. This became known on May 24, when a translation of al-Qahtani's article was published.

The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group actually emerged in 2012 as the Jabhat al-Nusra group, which was a branch of the Islamic State of Iraq terrorist organization. After ISIS declared itself the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in 2013, Jabhat al-Nusra refused to swear allegiance to it and came under the auspices of al-Qaeda. In 2017, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was created, which announced the severance of all ties with al-Qaeda and became a rival group led by Abu Muhammad al-Julani.

The call to move away from the course of the fight against the United States and move on to confrontation with Iran, voiced by the leaders of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, was apparently made under the influence of Washington. The United States has long been sending HTS signals through publications by recognized experts and think tanks about the possible removal of this terrorist organization from the relevant lists if it meets a number of conditions.

It is obvious that Washington is waiting for the HTS to abandon hostility towards the United States and reorient itself to the fight against the opponents of the United States, and at the same time to include Al-Qaeda branches in this process - their HTS will have to lead. Thus, the Americans can not only eliminate the threat from the unruly al-Qaeda, which must be disbanded, but also direct its branches to subvert US rivals such as Iran and Russia.

In particular, Abu Maria al-Qahtani criticizes the appointment of Saif al-Adl as the new head of al-Qaeda instead of the murdered Ayman al-Zawahiri . He points out that he is al-Adl in Iran, and therefore it is not clear to him how he will lead the organization, being under the control of the local authorities and the IRGC. Therefore, Abu Maria calls on all branches and branches of Al-Qaedato withdraw from this organization, and Al-Qaeda itself to disband in order to oppose Iran as a “united front”.

In fact, HTS intends to lead the front of jihadist groups against Iran and Russia, replacing in this role the "central apparatus" of Al-Qaeda as the main coordinating body.

"Roadmap" of the legalization of terrorists
Back in 2021, the International Crisis Group, funded by the Soros Foundation, produced a report that formulated proposals for the Biden administration on Washington's attitude towards HTS. In particular, it stressed the need for the United States to work with its European allies and Turkey to “ push the HTS to take further action to address key local and international issues and set clear targets that, if met, could enable the HTS to decommission himself labeled "terrorist"," the document noted.

US and Ukraine bring in new jihadist fighters to fight Russia
In this regard, a "road map" was proposed, which contained proposals on what needs to be done by HTS so that NATO countries eventually stop treating it as a terrorist organization. In the future, it was supposed to support similar changes in the status of HTS in the UN, where "terrorist marks" should also be removed from it.

As a result, according to the idea of the Americans, HTS should acquire a legal status and it is with her that negotiations should be conducted on the future of the Syrian region of Idlib.

Western countries are now ready to increase stabilization support for "critical services" in Idlib, provided that HTS expands the space for Western NGOs to work, supports the activities of civil society organizations and "shows a clear commitment to political and religious pluralism."

In turn, recent events related to the restoration of Syria's membership in the Arab League and Ankara's readiness to normalize relations with Damascus may force Washington to intensify efforts to legalize HTS. The United States continues to oppose Syria's exit from the regime of international isolation and, perhaps, will seek to more actively support any opponents of Bashar al-Assad , who were previously refused assistance.

The most powerful and organized anti-government group in the SAR is the HTS. By taking the group under guardianship, the United States can prevent the solution of the Idlib problem through a Syrian-Turkish compromise. Such a compromise implies the establishment of control over the region by the Syrian government with certain concessions to the opposition.

Washington can also use HTS to put pressure on Turkey.
Recently, there has been growing tension for control over resources between pro-Turkish groups from the Syrian National Army and the HTS. This group seeks to become the only significant opposition force that has closed on itself all external support for the remaining afloat Syrian rebels, whom it would like to attach to its own forces along with the territories under their control.

In addition, the HTS-controlled region of Idlib is already being used to recruit foreign fighters to take part in the fighting in Ukraine on the side of the Kyiv regime. In particular, militants from the Ajnad al-Kavkaz group, which consists mainly of Chechens, have already arrived in Ukraine from Idlib, and so-called. "Albanian group".

Also, through their outreach activities, resources affiliated with HTS , including numerous Telegram channels, began to openly support the United States and Western countries, as well as Ukraine in conflict with Russia. A few years ago, direct support of these states by such jihadist structures seemed unthinkable.

ISIS terrorists are also in the focus of US attention

In addition to the HTS, the United States will continue to use fighters from another terrorist organization, ISIS (or IS ), to destabilize Syria.

In January 2022, there was a mass escape of ISIS militants from the Al-Hasakah prison in northeastern Syria, held by the US military and the Kurdish left-wing radical SDF. Among the fugitives were, among other things, high-ranking commanders of the group. Thanks to this, it was possible to significantly increase the combat capability of this terrorist organization. Especially given the fact that many of the fugitives made it to ISIS bases in central Syria.

However, even after this escape, the flow of both recruits and veterans of ISIS, smuggled out of Kurdish prisons under American control in northeast Syria, continued.

It is significant that these prisons contain both experienced militants, as well as young people and children. They at least continue to receive the appropriate ideological pumping from the "senior comrades"; they are taught both the skills of warfare and the conduct of terrorist attacks.

The increased activity of ISIS in Syria in recent months has led to heavy fighting this spring, in April and May, in the area of the Syrian city of Al-Qaum. Then the ISIS militants were able to take control of several settlements, and government forces only with the support of Russian PMCs and aviation managed to squeeze them back into the desert.

The growth of this terrorist activity is due to the fact that from the camps and prisons in the territory held by the Americans and Kurdish militants, groups of ISIS terrorists are purposefully “dumped” from time to time, which penetrate into the territories controlled by the government. These "emissions", of course, are controlled by the US military and the SDF, which open the appropriate corridors for this.

Such actions of the Americans have three goals.

First, to reduce tension in the camps themselves through the release of the most trained and active militants from there.

Secondly, through the activation of ISIS militants in the Syrian desert, open a second front against Russia, which will force it to divert its capabilities to the Syrian theater of operations. However, as the battles for Al-Qaum showed, government forces without Russian support are still ineffective in conducting counter-terrorism operations.

Second after Afghanistan. In Syria, a fatal blow is dealt to US hegemony
Thirdly, the activity of ISIS will serve as an excuse not only to maintain, but also to increase the American military presence in the Syrian northeast. Its declared goal is to prevent the revival of ISIS. Therefore, as long as ISIS is active, supporters of continued American intervention in Syria will always have an appropriate argument for Congress.

At the same time, the Americans will support the persistence of this threat of a “rebirth of ISIS” through the use of their own channels for replenishing terrorist cells exclusively in the desert areas controlled by the Syrian government. At the same time, these “dumpings” of ISIS militants from prisons and camps will be dosed and will allow maintaining the level of escalation that the Americans need, and if necessary, the flow of militants can be blocked.

Assad gov’t to oblige people in north Daraa to settle status or leave
[NPASyria] On Thursday, the Syrian government obliged dozens of men in the town of Mhajjah, in the northern countryside of Daraa, south Syria, to settle their status or leave the town.

A local source told North Press, "The government forces sent a list of 29 names of wanted people to the security branches which, in turn, demanded community leaders bring those men so they can settle their status."

The source added that the list included eight people affiliated with the Russian-backed Eighth Brigade, including a commander named Hamed Akram Shabaneh. The Eighth Brigade, which was made by assembling Syrian rebels, was established by Russia following a settlement agreement in 2018 between the Syrian government and opposition.

The source said that the government forces demanded the people mentioned in the list to hand over their weapons. The settlement starts tomorrow, on Friday.

The government forces have warned the wanted people that if they are not willing to engage in the settlement, they must leave, the source added.

This is the fifth settlement launched by the government in Daraa Governorate. It started on May 19 in the eastern countryside of Daraa, and it is still ongoing.

Turkey to build 240,000 houses in northern Syria
[NPASyria] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
’s Interior Minister, Suleyman Soylu, said on Thursday that his country, in coordination with Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
, will build 240,000 houses in Ottoman Turkish-occupied areas in northern Syria in less than three years.

He gave a speech in Bakirköy, telling off that he went to the city of Jarablus, northeast Syria, and attended the groundbreaking ceremony there.

The minister said that Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...
and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani met last year, as Erdogan proposed to build houses in areas he occupies and to take Syrian people from Turkey and place them in that "safe zone."

At the time, Qatar agreed to construct 240,000 houses there for one million of Syrian refugees, Soylu added.

"I will buy these houses in Jarablus, al-Bab, Tel Abyad, Sere Kaniye [(Ras al-Ain)], together with 240,000 houses," the minister said, quoting Erdogan as saying.

The Ottoman Turkish government plans to settle about one million Syrian refugees in 13 Syrian areas, which are not the areas the refugees are originally from, adjacent to the southern border of Turkey starting from Azaz in the west to Sere Kaniye in the east.

On May 23, Erdogan announced that Turkey will deport one million Syrian refugees to northern Syria without identifying a specific time for commencing the process.

Turkey and Qatar "signed the protocol for 240,000 houses in April and ... laid the foundation of the first 5,000 houses today," according to the Ottoman Turkish minister.

"5000 houses will be finished in 6 months. Within 2 months, 28 thousand more houses will start and we will complete 240 thousand houses in a period of 2.5 years, 3 years at the latest," he added.

The number of settlements built by Turkey with the support of Gulf countries, most notably Kuwait and Qatar, and Paleostinian associations, has exceeded more than 100 in Ottoman Turkish-occupied areas in northern Syria, according to North Press’ own investigations.

Turkey has repeatedly — and illegally — deported Syrian refugees under the pretext of violating asylum laws and not amending their data regarding the temporary protection ID card, also known as Kimlik.

In June 2022, Syrians for Truth and Justice (STJ), a human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
organization, published an extensive investigative report in which it revealed details of the demographic change process implemented in the Ottoman Turkish occupied city of Afrin, northwest Syria, by Turkey.

Turkey launched three military operations against northern and northeastern regions in Syria. The first was "Euphrates Shield" operation in 2016 where it occupied Jarablus and al-Bab, the second was "Olive Branch" operation in 2018 where it occupied Afrin region, and the third was "Peace Spring" in 2019 which resulted in the occupation of the two cities of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad with their countryside.
