Niger PM announces talks to withdraw French troops from country
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Niger's prime minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zein, appointed by the rebels , announced negotiations on the early withdrawal of French forces from the country. This was reported on September 4 by Agence France-Presse.

"The military-appointed prime minister of Niger said on Monday that talks were under way... to get French forces out of the country as soon as possible," the article said.

Ali Mahaman Lamine Zein also stressed that the French troops are in the country illegally.

As reported by IA Regnum, earlier the Minister of the Armed Forces of France, Sebastien Lecornu, and the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, had a telephone conversation, during which they reached an agreement on striving to resolve the situation in Niger through diplomatic means. The parties also discussed the security conditions in the African country.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Azerbaijani activist Yahyaev complained of torture
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Arrested in Baku, a member of the Muslim Unity movement,
...also in our archives as the unregistered Movement For Muslim Unity, in Arabic as Al Tawheed. They describe themselves as a peaceful Shiite Islamic soci-political movement calling for democratic reform and religious liberties, but it’s clear from context that they mean the peace that comes from submission to Khomeini Shiism and Iran. In practice they’ve been involved in the usual murder, terrorism, organized mass riots, and attempted armed insurrection, exactly on the Khomeini model...
Agali Yakhyaev, said that after his arrest, he was forced under torture to confess to drug trafficking.
Possibly he was. Quite probably he would complain about it even if he’d instead been bathed in asses’ milk and fed blini with sour cream and caviar.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the wife of Agali Yakhyaev, a member of the board of the Muslim Unity religious movement, said that on August 31 he stopped communicating and suggested that Yakhyaev was detained by the security forces. On the evening of September 1, it became known that Yakhyaev had been arrested on charges of drug trafficking on a large scale. Agali Yakhyaev publicized the cases of believers who were arrested on trumped-up charges, said human rights activist Rufat Safarov.

Agali Yakhyaev was sentenced in 2017 in the Nardaran case to 15 years in prison. However, in March 2021, he was released early under a presidential clemency order. In May 2022, the court sent Yakhyaev under arrest for 30 days, finding him guilty of hooliganism and disobedience to the police at a rally in support of another activist of the Muslim Unity movement.

On September 3, Agali Yakhyaev called from the Baku SIZO-1 and said that after his detention he was tortured, his wife Shakhana Gasanova said today at a press conference .

“Agali said that when on August 31 he was driving for his mother to pick her up from the dacha, he was stopped at a traffic light in the village of Mehtiabad (10 kilometers north of Baku) by employees of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for combating drug trafficking. They took Agali to the Mehtiabad police station [ where he] was subjected to horrific torture. He was told that he had to confess to committing a drug-related crime - they say that such an order came from "above". They forced him to incriminate himself.

Agali said that in addition to torture, he was subjected to even more difficult conditions, about which he could not talk on the phone. "I understand that he was also blackmailed by troubles for his family members, that is, us. As a result, he was forced to confess," Gasanova said, adding that she brought Yakhyaev to the defense lawyer who will appeal the arrest.

Shakhana Hasanova stressed that this is the third arrest of Yakhyaev on fabricated criminal charges. "My husband was arrested for the first time in February 2010when he participated in a peaceful action dedicated to the day of the death of the Prophet Muhammad. Then he was given 4.5 years in prison on charges of resisting the police and hooliganism. The next time he was arrested in November 2015 in the village of Nardaran, where he participated in a religious event dedicated to the month of Muharram. This time, those arrested were accused of serious crimes, including terrorism, although there was no evidence of their guilt, the entire criminal case was falsified. Agali then received 15 years. But in 2021, he was pardoned. And yet - last year, Agali was imprisoned for 30 days on an administrative case," she said at a press conference attended by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Shakhana Gasanova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that her 39-year-old husband was the sole breadwinner in a family with two children of school age.

Lawyer Zibeyda Sadygova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today that she had not had time to meet with Yakhyaev yet. According to the lawyer, today she will sign an agreement with Yahyaev's wife, after which she will officially join the defense and first of all file an appeal against the arrest, and then she will seek a meeting with him. "If Agali Yakhyaev tells me that he was tortured, then we will probably file a complaint with the prosecutor's office," the lawyer said.

An employee of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs denied allegations of torture of Yakhyaev by the police. "Such fabrications are spread for the purpose of self-defence," he explained to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Recall that in early March, Azerbaijani human rights activists noted that against the backdrop of deteriorating relations with Iran, the vector of political repression in Azerbaijan  shifted from pro-Western activists to members of Muslim Unity. Over the past two or three months, about 90 people have been arrested in Azerbaijan on charges of drug trafficking. Their arrests are accompanied by a propaganda campaign to expose the Iranian spy network, but they are charged with drug trafficking, Elshan Hasanov, head of the Center for Monitoring Political Prisoners, said at the time.

Europe
Misery plagues Kurdish asylum seekers in Greek camps
[Rudaw] Some Kurds, waiting for months in Greek camps for their asylum claims to be assessed, are regretting their journey to Europe.

After waiting for 13 months, Aso Faris has finally been informed that next month he will have his asylum interview in Athens. He hopes this will mean an end to his long wait at the Ritsona refugee camp.

"I have been staying here for a year and around a month in Greece, spending seven months alone at this camp. Our fate is uncertain. In a month, I will conduct my asylum interview, so I will go there to see what will happen," Faris said.

Originally from Sulaimani, he said he fled political instability and financial woes.

"My only objective is for Kurdistan to become a nice country for us. We hope all the political and financial issues are resolved so we can all return home. We do not have to be told to go back. We will go back voluntarily," he said.

If Greece rejects his asylum, he plans another dangerous journey to the United Kingdom.

Some 200 of the 1,000 migrants colonists at Ritsona refugee camp are Kurds.

Masrour Mohammed, 30, is another Kurd from Duhok who was deported to Greece by German authorities after living for four years in the country without status. Sitting under the shade of a tree just outside the camp and silently checking his smartphone, he regrets the journey he made to Europe.

"We finally reached Europe. If I had known I would see this situation, I would have never made the journey," he said. "I regret this journey, but it is all too futile to express remorse. This is where we have ended up. German [authorities] made us regret coming to Europe."

"I saw a lot of miseries there," he added, recounting how he was sent from Germany to Greece. "At 5:30 am, six police vehicles came and they deported me back to Greece. They handcuffed us all the way to Berlin airport, and from there, they deported us to Athens."

The Ritsona refugee camp is an hour outside of Athens. The majority of the Kurds in the camp are from Syria and have fled the conflict there.

Abdulrahman Horo, from Afrin, sighs that he has not seen his children and wife for five years as he has been stuck in the camp.

"My children are in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
. I am from Afrin. I have no relatives in Turkey. My wife and children are there alone. It has been five years since the last time I saw my children," Horo said.

People living in the camp are fed three meals a day and receive 70 euros monthly.

Greece is an entry point for people taking dangerous sea voyages in the hopes of a better life in the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...

Italy's former PM claims France, US downed plane in attempt to kill Gaddafi in 1980
[Jpost] France destroyed the Itavia Airlines Flight 870 passenger plane in an attempt to assassinate Libya’s then-dictator Muammar Gaddafi, former Italian prime minister Giuliano Amato claimed in an interview with la Repubblica published Saturday.

He further called on French President Emmanuel Macron to stop "hiding the truth."

Amato claimed that on June 27, 1980, a French missile caused the crash of Itavia Airlines Flight 870.

"A plan had been launched to hit the plane on which Gaddafi was flying,” Amato told the source, which was cited by Ansa. “But the Libyan leader escaped the trap because he was warned by [former Italian prime minister Bettino] Craxi. Now the Elysée can wash away the shame that weighs on Paris.”

"After 40 years, the innocent victims of Ustica have not received justice. Why continue to hide the truth? The time has come to shed light on a terrible state secret. Macron could do it. And NATO could do it.

"Who knows now, speak: it would have great merits towards the families of the victims and towards history", Amato said in a new call for justice. "The most credible version is that of the responsibility of the French Air Force, with the complicity of the Americans. They wanted to kill Gaddafi, flying on a Mig of his air force. The plan envisaged simulating a NATO exercise, a staging that would have allowed the attack to be passed off as an involuntary accident".

Why would Gaddafi - who had several fairly large, luxurious jets at his disposal - fly on a second-tier Italian airline?

I'll wait.

Iraq
Volunteer mobilization in Sinjar District for deployment in Syria, Source
2023-09-01
[Shafaq News] Factions affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) stationed in Sinjar district have reportedly appealed to families interested in volunteering to travel to Syria.

A government source in the district shared that one of the conditions for accepting volunteers is to possess an Iraqi passport. Registration of volunteers is taking place secretly in one of the PMF camps.

The source also revealed that three prominent PMF leaders from Sinjar had recently traveled abroad. It was further disclosed that more than 700 volunteers have been approved for registration, each set to receive a monthly salary of $3,000. These volunteers are intended to form a military force stationed along the Iraqi-Syrian border in the western areas of Sinjar district.

The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, is a state-sponsored umbrella organization of mostly Shia militias in Iraq. The PMF was formed in 2014 to fight against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS).

The PMF has been deployed to Sinjar, a Yazidi-majority district in northern Iraq, since 2015. The PMF's presence in Sinjar has been controversial.

In recent months, the PMF has increased its presence in Sinjar, citing the threat of a Ottoman Turkish military operation. The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
has long accused the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a Kurdish holy warrior group, of using Sinjar as a base to launch attacks into Turkey.

There are Yazidis from Sinjar who are members of the PMF factions. Some Yazidis are also members of the Shia-majority Kataib Hezbollah and the Badr Organization.

Whether or not to join the PMF is a complex one for Yazidis. On the one hand, the PMF is a powerful force that can help to protect the Yazidi community from ISIS and other threats. On the other hand, the PMF is also accused of human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
abuses, and some Yazidis worry that joining the PMF could put them at risk.

Iraqi SF thwart attempted entry of military equipment in Basra
2023-08-30
[Shafaq News] A security source in Basra province reported today, Wednesday, that a security force managed to thwart the entry of military equipment belonging to a foreign company operating in one of the oil fields in the province.

The source stated in an interview with Shafaq News Agency that a security force affiliated with the Iraqi National Intelligence Service succeeded in preventing the entry of 14 military radars and 12 thermal cameras within a container owned by the Lukoil Russian oil company, which operates in the Rumaila oil fields in Basra province.

The source added that the security force confiscated these devices and launched a high-level investigation with the company officials regarding the entry of these devices without obtaining security approvals from government authorities.

U.S. 82nd airborne division to deploy in central command area, including Iraq
2023-08-29
[Shafaq News] The U.S. 82nd Airborne Division will undertake a deployment mission in the U.S. Central Command area of operations, which includes Iraq, during the fall of this year, according to the American newspaper "Fayetteville Observer."

The American report noted that this military deployment is part of the regular rotation process among U.S. Army divisional forces. The 82nd Airborne Division will replace the 185th Reconnaissance Airborne Division of the National Guard in Mississippi.

The report quoted a blurb as saying that about 1,500 soldiers, aircraft, and ground equipment from the "Fort Bragg" division in North Carolina will continue their operations as part of "Operation Inherent Resolve," providing advice, assistance, and enabling partner forces in the region.

The report highlighted that the mission of the Joint Task Force assigned to "Operation Inherent Resolve" is to defeat ISIS through local partners in Iraq and Syria.

As part of the preparations for this deployment, the 82nd Airborne Division completed over 1,800 flight hours and conducted three major collective training exercises.

Colonel Kirsten Schuining, the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, was quoted as saying that his troops are ready to assume the mission "and continue to enhance our security cooperation" with partner forces.

Colonel Schuining explained, "Our soldiers and aviators are training hard, and they are ready to enhance our enduring commitment to the security and regional defense of our regional partners."

In briefly looking for her bio however, I noted she was in the 1st Cav Division ID as an GS Aviation Bn Cdr, the 1st Inf Div as an GS Aviation Bn Cdr, the 3rd ID as the EEO Program Director, the 82nd AB Div as the Avn Brigade XO and now Brigade Commander, all in the period from 2017-2023. Three command billets, a special staff assignment, all in six years.
Looks like a carefully managed career path, and the divisional unit changes are a hint of the General Officer track someone has for her.

#13  Same with the 101st. They are in Poland, Romania and Ft. Campbell.

Both the 82nd and 101st used to be our QRF (Quick Reaction Force) where one brigade was on DRF1 status at all times (Deployment Ready Force 1) where all your stuff is packed, vehicles palatized and the entire brigade and equipment can be wheels up in 24 hours.

Seems that system died during the GWOT

2 Uyghur suspects in 2015 Bangkok bombing return to court after 9-month delay
2023.08.29
[BenarNews] After appearing in court in a wheelchair as their trial resumed Tuesday, one of two Uyghur men suspected in a deadly bombing in Bangkok said that his eight years of confinement had taken a toll on his health. Adem Karadag and co-defendant Yusufu Mieraili have been incarcerated since they were arrested within two weeks of the Aug. 17, 2015, attack at the Buddhist Erawan Shrine and they returned to court on Tuesday after a nine-month hiatus in the case, which is still only in the prosecution phase.

While Mieraili walked into court, Karadag needed a wheelchair as the two defendants returned to hear prosecution testimony.
