Florida man badly loses fight with police, K-9
[NYP] Some pictures are worth a thousand words — but this mugshot only needs six: don’t try to fight the police.

A Florida man was taken into custody after police said he kept attacking two sheriff’s deputies and their K-9 despite losing and regaining consciousness twice — and getting tased — during the scuffle, according to WEARTV.

The ill-advised incident, which left the suspect with multiple scrapes and bruises plus staples on his eyebrow, happened Thursday afternoon in Escambia County, on the state’s panhandle.

A driver called police to report a man was trying to grab his steering wheel and carjack his vehicle while walking in and out of traffic, according to the report.

When the victim drove away and returned home, he reportedly found the same suspect on his porch trying to break into his home, where his daughter was inside.

Court upholds bribery conviction of Chinese exec Patrick Ho linked to Hunter Biden
[NYP] A federal appeals court in New York has upheld the bribery conviction of the former chairman of a think tank funded by a Chinese energy company linked to Hunter Biden.

The three-judge panel on Tuesday affirmed the December 2018 conviction of Patrick Ho Chi-ping, 70, a former Hong Kong government official, for violations involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for trying to bribe high-ranking officials in Chad and Uganda.

The bribes were made to secure oil rights and in pursuit of lucrative businesses deals on behalf of the Chinese energy behemoth CEFC, which funded a think tank that touted a "special consultative status" with the United Nations and an office in Manhattan.

Chi-ping was the principal director of the think tank.

Ye Jianming, who had ties to the Chinese military and intelligence services, was the chairman of CEFC until he disappeared after being taken into custody by Chinese authorities in early 2018.

Documents obtained by The Post show Hunter Biden, the son of President-elect Joe Biden, reached a deal with Ye for half-ownership of a holding company that was expected to provide him with more than $10 million a year for making "introductions."

Protesters temporarily block LA vaccination site
[AP] The Los Angeles Times reports that one of the largest vaccination sites in the nation temporarily shut down Saturday because dozen of protesters blocked the entrance, stalling hundreds of motorists who had been waiting in line for hours.

Officials say the Los Angeles Fire Department shut the entrance to the vaccination center at Dodger Stadium about 2 p.m. as a precaution. The protesters had members of anti-vaccine and far-right groups.

Some of them carried signs decrying the COVID-19 vaccine and shouting for people not to get the shots. There were no incidents of violence.

#1  "far-right groups"

Really?

What does this term, as used by our mendacious "narrative"-mongers, even mean?

How do they know whether someone's not an anti-vaxxer but instead is "far right"?

#12  I am completely uninterested in arguing about vaccines any more. Minds have been made up, even those who want to wait to see how they work in the real world before making a decision about whether or not to be vaccinated.

The protesters are wasting their time. So are those of you arguing their point here.

Unlike abortion, those choosing to get vaccinated are fully adult, and judge the risks of vaccination to be lower than the risk, to them, of not being vaccinated. That is my 95 year old mother’s choice, because she is very old and lives closely with other very old people in a retirement home. Trailing daughter #1, final daughter, and I have asked our GP to try to get us pushed up on the priority list because we have serious health issues which increase the likelihood that a) we will get sick if exposed, and b) if we get sick we will get very sick. Mr. Wife, who is pretty healthy, is perfectly content to risk getting sick before his turn comes, probably after they offer it to college kids, so long as his womenfolk are protected as soon as possible.

It should be noted that there are plenty of doctors who are idiots. And even more doctors’ wives. Having a brain better than usual at memorizing vast reams of information and applying that information in a narrow context does not imply anything about general cleverness or wisdom. Being married to someone like that implies absolutely nothing at all — some men like their wives to be pretty and stupid.

I refer all of you who did not see Steve White’s post yesterday to it here. And for those who do not know him, he was the senior moderator here since the early days. He had to give it up when the extra workload and frustration caused by Obamacare on both the doctoring and professing sides of of his work took too much time from what he did so wonderfully here.

#14  I'm pretty far right. I am not in a rush to get the vaccine, but will do so when it is convenient. Even if I did not want to get it because I thought it was 'bad', why should I care if somebody else did - that would be their choice and their problem.

#17  Published Jan. 25 in the journal Virulence, say that these "animal reservoirs" may pose a risk to humans down the road, because there is the potential for the virus to evolve in those species and spread back to people.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is known to infect a number of animals besides humans, including cats, dogs, minks, tigers and gorillas.

Cats and dogs may eventually need their own COVID-19 vaccines to prevent the coronavirus from evolving further and "spilling" back to humans, according to one group of researchers.

Rapper cousin of Beyoncé, Martell Derouen aka Kardone now Tango Uniform
[Breitbart] A rapper who has reportedly been identified as a cousin of superstar Beyoncé has been shot dead in Texas, with authorities issuing an arrest warrant for a 21-year-old woman.

Rapper Martell Derouen, whose stage name was Kardone, was found dead of a gunshot wound inside his apartment in central Texas on Tuesday, according to a report in the San-Antonio Express News. Police had been called to his home for a welfare check after a friend reported not hearing from Derouen for several days.

The 34-year-old rapper was signed to the Sony Music record label The Orchard. He was reportedly a cousin of Beyoncé, though it remains unclear how closely they were related. The superstar celebrity has not publicly commented on the killing.

Police have issued a warrant for rapper Sasha Skare, 21, as a suspect in Derouen’s murder, according to a report from CBS Austin. Skare, who is currently at large, was also a suspect in a separate 2019 shooting death in Austin. Authorities arrested her in that case, but she was reportedly released on bond in January.

Man leaves €2m to French village that hid his family from Nazis
[Guardian] An Austrian man who fled the Nazis with his family during the second world war has bequeathed a large part of his fortune to the French village whose residents hid them from persecution for years.

Eric Schwam, who died aged 90 on 25 December, wrote the surprise gift into his will for Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, located on a remote mountain plateau in south-east France that historically has a large Protestant community known for offering shelter to those in need.

"It’s a large amount for the village," the mayor, Jean-Michel Eyraud, said.

He declined to specify the amount since the will was still being sorted out, but his predecessor, who told a local website that she met Schwam and his wife twice to discuss the gift, said it was about €2m (£1.8m).

Schwam and his family arrived in 1943 and were hidden in a school for the duration of the war, and remained until 1950.

Hiding Hunter Biden laying low in LA, starting art career with shady dealer with ties to China
[NYP] As federal prosecutors continue their criminal probes into Hunter Biden’s taxes and international business dealings, the President’s son — shuttling between Washington DC and a sprawling Hollywood Hills home — is lying low, consulting with lawyers and focusing on his new career in art.

Biden, who turns 51 next week, is prepping a solo show with Soho art dealer Georges Berges, who currently represents Sylvester Stallone. Berges was once arrested for "terrorist threats" and assault with a deadly weapon in California and has strong ties to China.

Biden, who continues to hold business interests in a billion-dollar Chinese investment firm, moved into the 2,000-square foot hilltop Los Angeles home with his wife Melissa Cohen in January 2020, two months before the birth of their baby boy.

The home is connected to Shane Khoh, a Los Angeles-based entrepreneur and real estate investor who is CEO of SXU Investment Holdings LLC, the California company that has owned the $3.8 million property since 2011, according to public records. Khoh, an American who is fluent in Chinese, sits on the board of Siong Heng Realty Pte Ltd., a Singapore-based real estate holding company, according to his LinkedIn profile. He is also listed as a "venture partner" of Diverse Communities Impact Fund, a private-equity group that features former Democratic New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on its board of advisors.

Canada to quarantine travel, suspend flights south
TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced stricter restrictions on travelers in response to new, likely more contagious variants of the novel coronavirus — including making it mandatory for travelers to quarantine in a hotel at their own expense when they arrive in Canada and suspending airline service to Mexico and all Caribbean destinations until April 30.

Trudeau said in addition to the pre-boarding test Canada already requires, the government will be introducing mandatory PCR testing at the airport for people returning to Canada.

"Travelers will then have to wait for up to three days at an approved hotel for their test results, at their own expense, which is expected to be more than $2,000," Trudeau said.

"Those with negative test results will then be able to quarantine at home under significantly increased surveillance and enforcement."

Third Vaccine nears Approval (plus one for the EU)
Hat tip to the Dallas Morning News, which posted the WaPoo-authored story.
[Medical Express] The first one-shot COVID-19 vaccine provides good protection against the illness, Johnson & Johnson reported in a key study released Friday, offering the world a potentially important new tool as it races to stay ahead of the rapidly mutating virus.
Still really scary, eh?
The pharmaceutical giant's preliminary findings suggest the single-dose option may not be as strong as Pfizer's or Moderna's two-dose formula, and was markedly weaker against a worrisome mutated version of the virus in South Africa.
I'm just gonna crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head.
But amid a rocky start to vaccinations worldwide, that may be an acceptable trade-off to get more people inoculated faster with an easier-to-handle shot that, unlike rival vaccines that must be kept frozen, can last months in the refrigerator.

"Frankly, simple is beautiful," said Dr. Matt Hepburn, the U.S. government's COVID-19 vaccine response leader.

J&J plans to seek emergency use authorization in the U.S. within a week. It expects to supply 100 million doses to the U.S. by June—and a billion doses globally by year's end—but declined to say how much could be ready if the Food and Drug Administration gives the green light.

Defeating the scourge that has killed more than 2 million people worldwide will require vaccinating billions.
According to St. Anthony, 95% of eight billion. More or less.
Nearly 23 million Americans have received a first dose of Pfizer or Moderna shots since vaccinations began last month, but fewer than 5 million have gotten their second dose.
21 days later for the Pfizer, 28 days for the Moderna. I got one; my wife got the other.
Also Friday, regulators cleared a third option, AstraZeneca's vaccine, for use throughout the European Union. The decision came amid criticism that the 27-nation bloc is not moving fast enough, as well as concern that there's not enough data to tell how well the vaccine works in older people.

Still another vaccine is in final testing: Novavax reported this week that its vaccine appears 89% effective in a British study and that it also seems to work—though not as well—against new mutated versions of the virus circulating in Britain and South Africa.

#2  Another perspective - Nearly 23 million Americans have received a first dose

So (nearly) more people in the US have been vaccinated than have had the virus. Doesn't sound like a "pandemic".

Ethiopia masses troops on borders, urging withdrawal of Sudanese army
KHARTOUM - Ethiopia has massed troops on the border with Sudan as its deputy prime minister reiterated on Friday calls to withdraw the Sudanese army from "the Ethiopian territories".

"The Ethiopian army deployed armaments including tanks and anti-aircraft batteries to the border region in the past two weeks, said two foreign diplomats who asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public," reported the New York-based Bloomberg news agency, on Thursday.

Similar reports have been circulating in the Sudanese capital since several days, as the Sudanese army chief of staff, Mohamed Osman al-Hussein was in a discrete visit to the border areas to inspect the ongoing construction of military infrastructures facilities.

Together with military preparation to any possible Ethiopian attack, Sudan launched a regional diplomatic campaign to explain its position on the growing tensions as delegations travelled to neighbouring countries and the countries member of the African Union Bureau of Heads of State and Government.

For his part, Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia spoke about the border dispute with Sudan in an online event organized by the Atlantic Council on Friday.

"Ethiopia is committed to resolving the problem through negotiation, but requires the Sudanese side to evacuate their army that has encroached deep into the Ethiopian territories (...), said Mekonnen.

Sudanese government say the army was deployed along the Sudanese side of the border and refuse the Ethiopian claims.

Muaz Tango, the head of Sudan border commission said he had advised to not accept the Ethiopian mediation for the formation of the transitional government. Tango said that the Ethiopian government had a very strong relationship with the former regime, to the extent that al-Bashir turned a blind eye to many things that had harmed the interests of Sudanese citizens.

"Therefore when they offered their mediation, they certainly sought to preserve or increase the same interests".

He added that the Ethiopian governments in the past denied the existence of a border dispute saying that border violations are carried out by the Amhara militiamen, not the Ethiopian government.

"But since this region is now in control of the country, the Ethiopian government expresses the interests of the Amhara region," he stressed.

He went further to repeat statements made by other Sudanese officials that the 1902 and 1972 agreement have settled the border dispute and now the parties should form a joint team to place the border markers.

Central African Republic on edge with mounting insecurity and food shortages
[France24] People living in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, are facing growing insecurity as clashes between the army and rebel groups have continued in the five weeks following the presidential election. A ban on motorcycle taxis has caused chaos in the transportation sector and the price of food and other basic goods have skyrocketed after rebels cut off the main supply road with Cameroon. Observers say they are exhausted by these struggles, but appreciate the solidarity among residents.

On January 25, a truck driver was killed when rebel groups ambushed the road between Cameroon and Bangui. This incident doesn’t bode well for the more than 1,500 trucks carrying food and medicine who have been blocked for more than a month in the Cameroonian border town of Garoua Boulai. The drivers are waiting for a pause in the conflict that began on December 19 when rebel groups contested the presidential election. They believe the election was rigged in favour of President Faustin Archange Touadéra, who was reelected on December 27 with 53.92 percent of the vote.

The frontline has gotten closer and closer to Bangui. Fighting has now reached the neighbourhoods of PK11 and PK12, which are located about a dozen kilometres from the town centre. After a deadly attack on January 13, authorities banned the circulation of motorcycle taxis, which are the main form of transportation for Bangui residents, especially students.

Schools were closed then reopened this Monday, leading to scenes of chaos as commuters jockeyed for a place on the buses and taxis.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Police are hunting down anti-Putin protesters
[BarentsObserver] Russian law enforcement authorities are preparing for Sunday’s nation-wide rallies in support of arrested politician and anti-corruption warrior Aleksey Navalny. Several thousand people have already been detained, and many more are on the police wanted lists. Most of the detainees took part in last weekend’s rallies.

Alone in Syktyvkar, the regional capital of the Komi Republic, up to 100 people are believed to be on a wanted list distributed among police representatives.

A number of people on the list have already been taken to the station to give testimony. Among them is Member of the Town Council Nikolay Udoratin, a representative of the Communist Party.

It is Novaya Gazeta that first reported about the Syktyvkar wanted list, which includes also a number of journalists, among them former editor of 7x7-journal Yelena Solovyova, photo journalist for 7x7-journal Pavel Stepanov, journalist for Krasnaya Znamya Valery Chernitsyn and Chief Editor of Pravda Komi Sergei Morokhin.

“At the moment I am in the police station where they question me, show me photos from the demonstration and ask if that is me or someone else,” activist Stanislav Okulov told 7x7-journal on Thursday morning.

“I am in a good company, here in the station are another three participants in the rally, and they are also being interrogated,” Okulov said.

Similar arrests are taking place across the country. In total, more than 4,000 have been detained in connection with the rallies. Of them are 1546 in Moscow, ODV-Info reports. In Petrozavodsk, Karelia, the number is 13, while 10 have been detained in Syktyvkar and six in Arkhangelsk. Another three have been detained in Severodvinsk (Arkhangelsk region), one in Kotlas (Arkhangelsk region) and one in Ukhta (Komi Republic), the figures from OVD-Info show.

3 Missing, 6 dead in Black Sea incident
[Reuters] A Palau-flagged freight ship has sunk off the coast of Turkey’s Black Sea province of Bartin, killing two crew members, the coast guard said on Sunday, adding that search and rescue operations for more crew members were continuing.

Bartin Governor Sinan Guner had initially said the ship, the ARVIN, was a Russian dry freight vessel that sank off the coast of the Inkumu region in poor weather, but later corrected that.

“The ARVIN ship attempted to take refuge at the Bartin port due to poor weather conditions as it carried cargo from Georgia to Bulgaria,” Guner was quoted as saying by state-owned Anadolu news agency.

China-Japan-Koreas
Australian military to continue patrolling South China Sea as Beijing warns Taiwan independence ‘means war’
[Guardian] Australian military ships and aircraft will continue to patrol the South China Sea amid warnings from China that a declaration of independence by Taiwan would “mean war”.

With Taiwan reporting an increase in Chinese military aircraft in its air defence zone, and with Beijing cautioning independence forces against “playing with fire”, the Australian government is closely monitoring developments in the region.

The US military announced last weekend that a US aircraft carrier group had entered the South China Sea in a bid to promote “freedom of the seas”.

A spokesperson for the Australian Department of Defence said: “Australian vessels and aircraft will continue to exercise rights under international law to freedom of navigation and overflight, including in the South China Sea, and we support others doing the same.

The comments were in response to questions about the US aircraft carrier group’s arrival, and whether the new Biden administration had requested Australia join it in the South China Sea or whether it would carry out its own exercises soon.

The Australian government believes Australia has a substantial interest in the stability of the South China Sea, in part because of the vast volume of trade that flows through it. While Australia routinely operates alongside the US and other partners, the government sticks to the position of not commenting on the specific details of Australian Defence Force operations.

Amid heightened tensions in the region, self-governed Taiwan has reported an increase in Chinese military aircraft in its air defence zone since last weekend. Six such aircraft, including four J-10 fighter jets, flew close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands at the top end of the South China Sea on Thursday, according to a Reuters report that cited Taiwan’s defence ministry.

Wu Qian, a spokesperson for China’s defence ministry, said on Thursday that Taiwan was “an inalienable part of China” and the Chinese military activities in the Taiwan Strait “a solemn response to the interference of external forces and the provocations by ‘Taiwan independence’ forces”.

According to a Chinese defence ministry summary of the monthly press conference, Wu also said he wanted to warn independence forces “that those who play with fire will set themselves on fire, and seeking ‘Taiwan independence’ means nothing but war”.

It is understood the Australian government’s position is to support a peaceful resolution of differences over Taiwan and other regional issues through dialogue and without the threat or use of force or coercion. The government also maintains that American leadership in the Indo-Pacific is welcome in order to uphold rules, norms and standards in the region.

Australia’s defence minister, Linda Reynolds, said after her first phone call with her new US counterpart, Lloyd Austin, on Wednesday that Australia and the US would “continue to work side by side with allies and partners to maintain a region that is secure, prosperous, inclusive and rules-based”.

The Pentagon issued a statement saying the US defence secretary had “emphasised the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific, founded on existing international law and norms in a region free of malign behaviour”.

Neither the Pentagon nor Reynolds directly mentioned China, but Australia has been at odds with its largest trading partner over a range of issues including Beijing’s militarisation of disputed features in the South China Sea and crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong.

Greg Moriarty, the head of Australia’s defence department, said last month that China had acted in a “disturbing” manner and complicated Australia’s security environment through its activities in the South China Sea. Moriarty also said a number of countries in the Indo-Pacific were deeply anxious about the future prospects for peace and stability, and the great powers to conduct themselves in a way that reassured the region.

Europe
EU backtracks in UK shot export row as WHO warns against ‘vaccine nationalism’
[IsraelTimes] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
on Friday backtracked on a threat to restrict exports of coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
shots to Northern Ireland in its growing row with Britannia, as the WHO warned against "vaccine nationalism."

Outbreaks are raging around the globe with COVID-19 deaths nearing 2.2 million, and while wealthy countries fight over limited vaccine supplies, there are fears the less privileged will not get access for a long time.

British-Swedish firm AstraZeneca has said it can only deliver a fraction of its vaccine doses promised to the EU and Britannia because of production problems, but both sides are demanding their pledges are met.

The EU threatened to restrict vaccine exports to Northern Ireland by overriding part of the Brexit deal with Britannia that allowed the free flow of goods over the Irish border, but backed down after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson
...pro-Brexit British prime minister, succeeding no-Brexit Theresa May. BoJo is noted as much for his sparkling personality and his hair as for his Conservative policies....
voiced "grave concerns."

The European Commission will "ensure that the Ireland/Northern Ireland Protocol is unaffected," the EU commissioner said in a statement late Friday.

That came after the EU released a redacted version of its contract with AstraZeneca, while announcing a mechanism that could allow it to deny the export of vaccines made on European soil.

Turkey holds four over artwork depicting Islam holy site
Wannabe neo-Ottoman Sultan Erdogan I tightens his hold on society another bit more.
[AlAhram] Ottoman Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said in a tweet Saturday that "four LGBT deviants" were tossed into the calaboose in comments which caused upset on social media

Ottoman Turkish police detained four people after artwork depicting Islam's holiest site viewed as offensive by Ankara was hung at an Istanbul university at the centre of recent protests, officials said Saturday.

The four individuals were detained on suspicion of "openly denigrating the religious values adopted by a section of the public", the governor's office said.

The police were on the hunt for two others, it added, describing the artwork as an "ugly attack" on Islam.

The artwork, which according to the Istanbul governorate also included a rainbow flag, a symbol associated with the LGBT community, was hung opposite the rector's office Friday at Bogazici University, the governorate said, in a move swiftly condemned by Ottoman Turkish officials.

's front man, Ibrahim Kalin, tweeted.

There have been weeks of protests at the university against what protesters claim is the politically motivated appointment of the new rector, Melih Bulu, by Erdogan.

The Ottoman Turkish president earlier this month accused some of those taking part of being "terrorists".

Watched a Turkish miniseries a while ago -- not bad, but there was a section where they opened a (mythical) chamber beneath the Hagia Sophia and found a cup that was a clone of the Grail from Indiana Jones. "A relic of a primitive age when people consumed blood during their worship ceremonies," said one of the characters.

I suspect no one involved in producing that show has ever had a legal problem over it.

Biden Signs Executive Order Allowing the U.S. to Fund Global Abortions
[National Review] President Biden signed an executive order Thursday afternoon reversing the Mexico City policy, permitting U.S. aid money once again to fund groups that provide or promote abortion around the globe.

The policy was first put in place by President Ronald Reagan in an effort to ensure that taxpayers were not required to indirectly fund abortion procedures performed in other countries. The policy has been undone via executive order by every subsequent Democratic administration and reinstated by each Republican one.

The Trump administration expanded the policy to include not only family planning funds distributed by the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development but also all foreign-health assistance provided by government agencies, including the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, and the Defense Department. That expanded policy, "Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance," increased the amount of U.S. funding covered by the abortion prohibition from about $600 million to nearly $9 billion.

Abortion advocates and interest groups in the U.S. oppose the Mexico City policy; Planned Parenthood, for instance, has labeled it a "global gag rule." During the presidential primary, the Biden campaign promised that his administration would undo the policy and permit U.S. aid money to fund abortions.

Palm Beach May Oust Trump from Mar-a-Lago
[Townhall] The town of Palm Beach, Florida, is reviewing legal documents after former President Donald Trump decided to make Mar-a-Lago — his private club — his permanent residence.

When Trump converted the private residence into a club in 1993, he allegedly came to an agreement with the town about residency restrictions. According to The Hill, some of the conditions of the agreement are that club members, including the former president himself, could only spend a maximum of seven consecutive days and no more than three weeks a year at the property. The number of members are also capped at 500 and there are parking restrictions as well.

"This matter is under legal review by our Town Attorney, John 'Skip' Randolph," Palm Beach Town Manager Krik Blouin told CNN. "Mr. Randolph is reviewing the Declaration of Use Agreement and our Code of Ordinances to determine if former President Trump can live at Mar-a-Lago."

Republican in razor-thin House race expands election lead after error discovered in review
[Washington Examiner] The Republican candidate in a narrow House race added to her lead Friday after a newly discovered error produced hundreds of eligible ballots.

Republican Claudia Tenney leads Democrat Anthony Brindisi by 122 votes, up from 29 votes, in New York’s 22nd Congressional District race after a mistake by county elections staff was discovered that resulted in more than 300 new votes, according to Syracuse.com.

State Supreme Court Justice Scott DelConte recently learned of a mistake by Oneida County elections staff in which more than 2,400 people registered to vote on time at the Department of Motor Vehicles but the staff failed to process their applications — meaning that those voters would have been told they weren’t registered on Election Day.

This error prompted DelConte to order a review of 1,100 affidavit ballots that were potentially from voters who applied on time but did not have their applications processed, and it was determined that 393 of those votes belonged to voters who registered on time.

Brindisi received 139 of the new votes, and Tenney received 232 votes. Two new votes went to a third-party candidate, Keith Price, and 20 were not added to the tally because they were challenged by campaign representatives for various reasons.

The razor-thin House race is the last unresolved race from the November election in the country, and both sides have launched challenges and appeals over the last few months.

Brindisi’s team has already appealed the judge’s decision to allow the new votes.

Iraq
KDP office in Sulaimani shot up
[NRTtv] SULAIMANI — Administrator of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) Fourth Branch Kamaran Gharib said on Saturday (January 30) that unidentified gunmen opened fire on the party’s office in Sulaimani’s Azadi neighborhood.

Gharib told NRT that the three gunmen drove up in a Land Cruiser SUV and shot at the office’s entrance using a Kalashnikov-style assault rifle and other firearms at 06:13 a.m., adding that no one was hurt but there had been some damage to the building.

“Such incidents have turned from an instance into a phenomenon, which shows instability and the failed policy of the city’s authorities,” he said, criticizing the local security forces, which are affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

He cast doubt on whether there would be any significant punishment for the perpetrators, suggesting that they would be protected.

“The relevant parties have started investigations, but they will have no results,” he said.

The security forces have not commented on the incident.

While not frequent, gunmen are known to take potshots at local offices of political parties in the Kurdistan Region, especially in times of inter-party tension. The KDP and PUK are currently struggling to develop a unified approach to resolving disagreements with Baghdad over the federal budget.

The KDP’s Fourth Branch in downtown Sulaimani was attacked in similar drive-bys in June 2020 and September 2019. Following the latter attack, a PUK office was shot up in Erbil, an area controlled by the KDP.

In July 2018, unidentified gunmen shot at the offices of the New Generation Movement in Sulaimani.

Israeli scientists say they've found ‘Achilles' heel' of cancer cells
[Jerusalem Post] Breakthrough study unveils vulnerability of malignant cells with high degree of chromosomal instability and could lead to new treatments.

A team of researchers led by scientists at Tel Aviv University say they may have stumbled upon the "Achilles’ heel" of cancer cells, which could in the future lead to the development of an entirely new array of cancer drugs and treatments.

Dr. Uri Ben-David of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, who led the research, told The Media Line that scientists have known for well over a century that malignant cells have an abnormal number of chromosomes. Humans have 46 chromosomes (two sets of 23) but in cancer this number changes because, during cell division, chromosome segregation takes place that can lead to a phenomenon called aneuploidy.
