#2  Giving MIGS to Ukraine would have been foolish. I suspect politicians in the US couldn't make enough money off the transfer to make it worth their time. The $10-16 Billion McConnell wants to hand to them is is just as bad. A good sized chunk of it will end up in a democrat bank account.

#3  The tweet in the posting doesn't render. In case the link doesn't work for you it reads:

USA now says that donating Poland’s 27 MiG-29 to Ukraine wouldn’t strengthen the Ukrainian Air Force.

USA also says the transfer “may be mistaken as escalatory and could result in significant Russian reaction”. The plan is officially dead.

Pelosi Says Zelensky Wants ‘the Planes, the Planes, the Planes’

#5  there were a lot of problems with this idea

getting planes to places where UK pilots were trained, then training, then getting O&M in place

all this time the planes would be targets

in fact as soon as the transfer papers were complete, the planes sitting on the ground in Poland would be legitimate targets

the anti tank stuff we are (I hope) sending them is easier to use and, while only able to hit one vehicle at a time - still pretty effective

«We'll eat them slowly, like salami.» Another group of Russian troops heading to Kyiv destroyed between Kharkiv and Sumy
[Lviv Now] From Mar 7 but post worthy for the title alone.
Between Kharkiv and Sumy, a huge group of Russian troops was formed and started moving in the direction of Kyiv. It no more exists, the adviser to the head of the President’s Office Oleksii Arestovych said on the air of the marathon of the Ukrainian channel, — Liga.net reports.

«A huge operative group was disbanded between Kharkiv and Sumy. It has gone now. It was partly killed, partly thrown near Kharkiv and stopped there, partly retreated and licked their wounds,» — he said.

Read also: The twelfth day. Occupiers are taking women and children hostage, creating a humanitarian crisis and preparing provocations of shelling russian cities

Arestovych added that Russia’s operational capabilities are far from massive bombings and final assaults, if not assaults at all. According to him, in the last 24 hours, Russian troops have hardly advanced: in the Kharkiv region, they were driven out of Chuhuiv, beaten near Mykolayiv, and covered with artillery near Kyiv.

«It simply came to our notice then. The Russian army is not strong, it is just long. We will eat them slowly, like salami,» — Arestovych summed up.

It will be recalled that desertion among the occupiers is becoming widespread — the invaders are fleeing the army even on the way to Ukraine. The Russian captured technician made several «walks» from the Crimea to the Kherson and Nikolaev areas and saw well the scale of desertion.

#1  Got to wonder if its not just vehicles. Wonder how 'rugged' a lot of the troops are? If you are humping 100+ lbs a load a day you become a mule and stress injuries start to mount if you are not preconditioned for it. That takes training, training, training. Heavy emphasis of mounted operations leaves troops less than prime for humping their loads (to include food, ammo, water) which may factor in to a road bound mentality.

#2  50-some years ago most of our gear and supply moved on the limited road network. But seemed like most of our fighting was done by small foot units trying to protect the flanks. A 40-mile convoy just sitting there getting blasted? Nobody working the flanks, even by air? Doesn't make sense.

#3  50-some years ago most of our gear and supply moved on the limited road network.

That was the problem in the beginning of our war in Korea. Road bound. When Ridgeway took over and rebuilt the battered Army in the face of enemy, its one of the things he instituted, getting them out of the vehicles and up on the high ground.

A Russian captivity reports on the mass desertion among the occupiers
[Lviv Now] Desertion among the occupiers is becoming massive — the invaders are fleeing the army even on the way to Ukraine. This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine with reference to the story of a captured Russian technician. His main task was to remove faulty Russian military vehicles from Ukrainian territory.

He made several «walks» from the Crimea to the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions and saw well the scale of desertion.

«A lot of people run away on the road, nobody tells anyone. Even the armed forces are against. We are threatened with 7 years in prison, and this is the only thing that keeps us going,» — the captured occupier admits.

According to him, the Russian Federal Security Service, whose officers are attached to each battalion-tactical reconnaissance group, is powerless here. They simply removed themselves, he continues, do not give specific tasks, but talk about something individually.

Russian motorized rifle company passing by

#1  Having trouble ith the vid. Question: In the batteries, were there sufficient personnel to run them--trucks, APC, etc?--or were the only personnel besides vehicle crews in the APC?
Can you run two batteries plus Infantry security with a hundred guys?
Lots of firepower but hauling the projes around is a different issue.

#2  Doesn't look like those tracks have road pads on. Going to turn those roads into something like I-70 in Illinois.

#3  Russian rifle squads are very small, seven effectives. Then the vehicle driver and gunner, that's nine total.

So are Russian motorized rifle platoons: three vehicles, one of them a platoon commander's vehicle, per platoon. That's ten with the company commander's vehicle and squad.

You begin to see their problem.

What I found fascinating about the parade is how a tank platoon was sub-attached to the rifle company, along with artillery. That's a lot of firepower.

This unit is task organized, possibly for breakthrough missions, possibly for probes.

#9  /\ tw, it is a problem as old as the 'Battle Taxi' Vs. Infantry Fighting Vehicle Argument-- How small can an infantry squad be? When you have a 9 man squad and one person is wounded then if two people carry them to safety the squad is now 6 men and practically 'combat ineffective'. One more casualty and somebody has to rescue them!?!
Posted by: magpie || 03/10/2022 15:16 Comments || Top||

#10  /\...also this unit is big enough to kill a building or two but too small to hold ground. If it is a 'replacement draft' to reinforce another unit that has lost casualties it might make more sense.

Posted by: Rex Mundi || 03/10/2022 16:17 Comments || Top||

#14  Please explain, because I don’t see it. Thank you!

It also is about coverage. Even with a vehicle accompanying a squad with a big gun, you have to cover your frontage. Seven riflemen may be enough but ten is better. Even with the big gun, the big gun has a limited field of view. If the vehicle is rendered immobile, or the gun is damaged, idea behind the big gun making up for the lack of coverage begins to fall apart.

It boils down to what the squad leader can control. Russian officers control everything about their squad whereas in western military rifle squads, the officer has a capable NCO to assist him in all aspects of the squad. The vehicle complicates his responsibilities.

You can add this to the other comments abut the tactical problems with Russians have.

Invasion Day 14 – Summary
See the link in the title for maps of the regions.
[MilitaryLand] Both sides agreed on a silence regime and evacuation of civilian population. The humanitarian corridors worked to some degree on Polesia, Northern and Pryazovia frontline (except not Mariupol).

Russia forces pushed to suburbs of Mariupol and towards Kryvyi Rih, stretching its forces in the south even more.

POLESIA FRONTLINE
includes Kyiv and Zhytomyr Oblast

Kyiv Oblast
The situation in the area was relatively calm. The enemy continue to amass its forces in direction of Bucha, Hostomel and Yasnohorodka. The civilian evacuation from Irpin continued today. According to British/US intel, Russian forces will launch a massive attack on Kyiv no later than Sunday.

Zhytomyr Oblast
A Russian plane conducted an airstrike on Zhytomyr, damaging infrastructure in the vicinity of Berdychivsky Bridge. No ground combat reported from this area.

NORTHERN FRONTLINE
includes Chernhiv and Sumy Oblast

Chernihiv Oblast
The civilian evacuation from Chernihiv did not happen today. Russian forces continue to regroup its forces in the north of the city.

I marked Kozolets as under Russian control because I found evidence that Russian troops indeed reached it a few days ago.

Sumy Oblast
The civilian evacuation from Sumy successfully continued today. Ukrainian sources reports up to 50,000 civilians left the city in total (yesterday and today). Romny is reportedly under siege, confirming that the Russian forces bypassed the city when moving from Sumy towards Pryluky.

SLOBODA FRONTLINE
includes Kharkiv and Luhansk Oblast

Kharkiv Oblast
Russian recon/sabotage group (DRG) attacked a Ukrainian checkpoint in the village of Andriivka at night. The assault was repelled by a Ukrainian Border Guard unit stationed there. Ukrainian forces conducted a successful counter-attack in the direction of Dernachi, liberating the settlement and lifting the enemy pressure in the area.

The situation in Izium reached a critical stage. Some civilians were able to leave towards Slovyansk, but most remained in the town. It’s unclear if there are still some Ukrainian elements in Izium. The town is heavily damaged.

A Russian spearheading element approached Petrivkse and attempted to push towards Hrushuvakha. Ukrainian forces reportedly repulsed the attack, but the situation remain tense.

Luhansk Oblast
Russian forces reached the outskirts of Rubizhne and gained fire control over the road connecting Rubizhne and Sievierodonetsk. In the south, Russian troops reportedly entered to Popasna, but we cannot verify it.

PRYAZOVIA FRONTLINE
includes Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblast

Donetsk Oblast
Russian forces gained control of Nikolske. A spearheading element pushed north and reached Staromlynivka, where a Ukrainian ambulance was ambushed. This push puts Ukrainian units at Huliapole under pressure, and it might complicate things for Ukrainian forces stationed south of Donetsk.

Zaporizhzhia Oblast
A humanitarian corridor was working today from Enerhodar towards Zaporizhzhia. The frontline remains unchanged in this area.

MARIUPOL
Ukrainian units continue to repel attack from all sides. The planned evacuation of civilians didn’t happen again. Instead, Russian bombed a maternity hospital and damaged several buildings.

Based on the ongoing events in the north of Mariupol, and unless Ukrainian forces suddenly shift its defensive tactics to more offensive ones, the situation for Mariupol doesn’t look good.

SOUTHERN FRONTLINE
includes Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa Oblast

Mykolaiv Oblast
Russian forces shelling Mykolaiv from the north-east and north, Ukrainian forces continue to dig trenches and setting up barricades. The moment of Russian attack on the city is approaching.

Meanwhile, the enemy pushed north of Mykolaiv, alongside Inhulets river and connected with its forces near Bashtanka. Fighting was also reported from Voznesensk, but Ukrainian forces are successfully holding the ground.

Kherson Oblast
Russian troops pushed north towards Kryvyi Rih from Nova Kakhovka. They captured Mylove, Dudchany and Bila Krynytsia, despite Ukrainian air strikes in the area. The cities of Nikopol and Kryvyi Rih prepares for defense.

Italy investigating mystery owner of $700M superyacht rumored to be Putin's
[NY Post] Italian police are investigating a mysterious $700 million superyacht moored there — amid ongoing rumors that it is owned by warmongering Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Scheherazade’s captain confirmed to the New York Times that Italian investigators boarded the 459-foot vessel in Marina di Carrara on Friday, demanding proof of ownership for what locals have long dubbed "Putin’s yacht."

"They are looking hard. They are looking at every aspect," Captain Guy Bennett-Pearce told the paper amid ongoing moves to seize Russian oligarchs’ yachts.

"This isn’t the local coppers coming down, these are men in dark suits," said the British national, using a UK term for police officers.

Bennett-Pearce refused to reveal the identity of the owner of the yacht, whose crew was at least 70 percent Russian, he said.

But he said he had "no choice" but to this week hand over documents revealing the owner’s identity to the investigating squad, which a source told the Times was led by Italian financial police.

One of the most expensive yachts in the world, Scheherazade has a swimming pool that converts to a dance floor, gold-plated fixtures, two helicopter decks and numerous satellite domes, the report said.

"Scheherazade" is the title of a symphonic work by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and each of the last two summers the yacht has sailed to Sochi, the Times said of the Russian city where Putin is rumored to own a personal "palace."

"Everybody calls it Putin’s yacht," one local, retired clerk Ernesto Rossi, told the Times. "It’s a rumor that’s been going around for months."
It's Putin's, though the paperwork owner is one of his pet oligarchs.

The lies, affairs and greed that made Putin the ’world’s richest man’
Now second richest. Elon Musk recently surpassed Putin and Putin's portfolio has taken a sudden dive.
[NYPost] Putin officially draws a salary of between $115,000 and $225,000 a year as Russia’s head of state. But, in reality, he has amassed incalculable wealth, ranging from $100 billion to $200 billion, making him one of the world’s richest leaders and possibly wealthier than Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates or Elon Musk. Bill Brody, an American financier who ran one of the biggest investment firms in Russia from 1996 to 2005, testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee in July 2017 that Putin had "accumulated $200 billion of ill-gotten gains."

The fortune of the Russian spymaster is stashed away, however, in offshore tax havens, invested in luxury properties inside and outside Russia, and spread out among the accounts of his family members and trusted friends who hold millions and billions of dollars for their boss.

Russia’s war in Ukraine: Latest developments – March 9. No, 3
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KyivPost] A member of Ukrainian territorial defense units talks on a phone during observation of Russian troops movements around the village of Velyka Dymerka, 40km east of Kyiv on March 9, 2022. - Russian troops made significant advances in recent days north-east of the Ukrainian capital, getting closer to Brovary, its main eastern suburb.

Here are the latest developments in Russia’s war in Ukraine:

– FEAR OF KYIV SIEGE –
Fears are mounting that Kyiv will be encircled, with AFP seeing Russian troops pressing closer to the capital as an orchestra played Europe’s anthem “Ode to Joy” in the city’s central square to boost morale.

– CHORNOBYL POWER CUT ‘NOT CRITICAL’ –
Power is entirely cut to the Chornobyl power plant, site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster in 1986.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, warns that the plant, now in Russian hands, is no longer transmitting data but says it sees no “critical impact on safety”.

– 12-HOUR CEASEFIRE –
Moscow and Kyiv agree a 12-hour ceasefire to allow civilians to flee five badly battered areas including around Kyiv, with 5,000 making it out of Sumy near the Russian border.

Others hope to escape what the Red Cross calls the “apocalyptic” situation in the besieged southern port of Mariupol, which has been without water and power for nine days.

– 10 DEAD IN RUSSIAN ATTACK –
At least 10 people are killed as Russian military “opened fire” on homes and other buildings in the eastern Ukrainian town of Severodonetsk, a local official says.

– ‘ECONOMIC WAR’ ON RUSSIA –
The United States bans Russian oil imports, “cutting the main artery” of Russia’s economy, with Britain saying it will do the same by the end of this year, and the European Union slashing gas imports by two-thirds.

Moscow accuses Washington of “declaring economic war”.

– NO FIGHTER JETS, SAYS US –
The Pentagon rejects a Polish offer to deliver its Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets to a US base in Germany, to be eventually handed over to Ukraine, fearing a wider conflict with Moscow.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky pleads, “Look, we’re at war! Send us the planes.”

– BUT $14BN IN AID –
US lawmakers are voting on a $14-billion aid package for Ukraine with Canada pledging an extra $50 million of military equipment.

– EU TARGETS MORE OLIGARCHS –
The EU adds 14 more Kremlin-linked Russian oligarchs and more than 146 senators to its sanctions blacklist, tightens controls on cryptocurrency transfers and targets Russia’s maritime sector over the war in Ukraine.

Britain impounds a private jet reportedly linked to Russian oligarch Eugene Shvidler.

– RUSSIA DEFAULT ‘IMMINENT’ –
Ratings agency Fitch downgrades Russia’s sovereign debt rating again, saying a default is “imminent”.

– TURKEY TALKS –
Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers will hold face-to-face talks in southern Turkey Thursday in the first high-level contact since the invasion.

– NORD STREAM 2 ‘DEAD’, US SAYS –
Russia’s controversial $12-billion Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany is “dead”, a senior US official says.

– NO HEINEKEN, MCDONALD’S OR COKE –
Beer giant Heineken halts brewing and sales in Russia, with McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, and Universal Music also suspending operations.

– PUTIN ‘ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED’: US INTEL –
US intelligence chiefs say Russian President Vladimir Putin is “angry and frustrated”, warning he is likely to “double down and try to grind down the Ukrainian military with no regard for civilian casualties.”

– 2,000 PLUS ‘RUSSIAN TROOPS KILLED’ –
The Pentagon says it estimates between 2,000 and 4,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the nearly two-week-old invasion. Russia admitted to 498 killed on March 2.

– 2.15 MILLION FLEE –
The UN says 143,000 fled Ukraine in the last 24 hours, with the number of refugees topping 2.15 million — more than half of those in Poland.

– EUROVISION WINNER NOW REFUGEE –
Ukraine’s 2016 Eurovision Song Contest winner Jamala tells AFP of having to leave her husband behind as she fled Kyiv. The ethnic Tartar said she never thought she would end up like her grandmother, whom the Soviets drove from Crimea in 1944.

Looking at a map, I'd say the Russians are not doing badly in terms of their strategic objectives. Lots of Oh Noeing! in the press about losses, but in a chess game, exchanging pieces for material advantage or a better position is a common tactic. Sometimes, it is a lot of pieces.

Some Deeper thoughts.

Yes, "Officially" they have done it and it's a good Media PR for these companies.

Since 90+% of the items are not being shipped overseas from the USA to Moscow.
eg. Mickey D's has a Russian Processing plant that supplies its 850+/- Russian locations. So how many of these items are actually made in RUSSIA and with the stroke of PUTIN's pen can "forced" to restart and resupply Russian businesses?
Note: Mikey D's has been in there since the 1990's when it was the USSR and invading other countries then.

Legal Question: Since the war is a STATE matter and NOT A commercial / operations related issue? Doesn't this place each of these companies in violation of their franchise agreements, open to Lawsuits, or at the least financial reparations once this PR stunt is over?

Serhiy Orlov, deputy mayor of the city of Mariupol, has said that the city of around 500,000 people continues to be under “continuous Russian shelling” and that genocide of locals is taking place at the hands of Russian invaders.

At least 1,170 people have been killed, with 47 buried today in a mass grave, he confirmed. There is no water, heat, power or gas. Residents are drinking snow and burning firewood, he added, saying "it’s medieval."

THE EUROPEAN UNION has been criticised after MEPs voted to sanction Poland and Hungary where more than one million refugees have found sanctuary from the war in Ukraine.

More than two million people have fled Ukraine after Russia's invasion, with 1.4 million welcomed by Poland and 214,000 by Hungary up to March 9, according to the United Nations. But that did not stop 478 MEPs voting on Thursday in favour of punishing both countries.

Hand-to-hand combat breaks out on streets of Kyiv suburb
[NY Post] Hand-to-hand combat has broken out in the streets of the Kyiv suburb of Irpin, which has been devastated by relentless Russian bombing and shortages of food, water and electricity.

"There is real street fighting now," a Ukrainian paratrooper named Stas told AFP. "In some places, there is hand-to-hand combat." The paratrooper, who did not provide his full name, said the Russians have staged "a huge column, 200 men, 50 light armored vehicles, several tanks" in the small town.

Russian troops, hoping to advance to the capital, Kyiv, need to make their way through Irpin first. "We are trying to push them out, but I don’t know if we’ll be fully able to do it," Stas said. "The situation is very unstable."

Images from the town show it in ruins. On Sunday, Tatiana Perebeynos, 43, her two children, Alise, 9, and Nikita, 18, and a man they were traveling with were killed when Russian forces indiscriminately fired at them as they were fleeing Irpin.

"The Russians are positioning themselves in residential buildings, apartments, shops," soldier Konstantyn Lokhmitskiy told AFP. "After that, they started shooting exclusively at civilians. ... This is my third war. But this never used to happen. No one shot at civilians back then."

Russian invaders launch over 50 attacks on Kharkiv over past day
[Ukrinform] Over the past day, the Russian military launched more than 50 missile and artillery attacks on Kharkiv.

"Kharkiv is completely under the defense of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. The enemy does not make active offensive operations, continues to launch missile and bomb strikes on residential infrastructure on the outskirts of the city. Over the past 24 hours, the Russian-occupation forces launched more than 50 artillery and MLRS attacks on Oleksiyivka, Pyatykhatky, Pivnichne Shosse, Belgorodske Shosse, Kholodna Hora, Derhachi, Pivnichna and Pivdenna Saltivka districts," Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleh Synegubov posted on Telegram on March 9, Ukrinform reports.

According to Synegubov, at about 21:25, an enemy fighter jet took off from the Russian city of Belgorod towards Izium, Kharkiv region. As a result of coordinated actions of the air defense units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the planes retreated and took the opposite course. There are no casualties among the personnel of the Armed Forces.

Fighting continues in the area of Izium. The enemy constructs pontoon-bridge crossings over the rivers Siversky Donets and Bereka.

"Our military gave another rebuff to the enemy in the direction of Derhachi. At night, the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with units of the National Guard and Territorial Defense, launched a counteroffensive towards the artillery and multiple-launch rocket system positions of the enemy from which systematic attacks are launched on the outskirts of Kharkiv. After unsuccessful resistance, the enemy fled, leaving its heavy weapons. Part of the enemy's personnel managed to escape to the forests in the direction of Belgorod, we ask the local population to be careful and, if possible, to facilitate the search," the head of the regional administration noted.

During the night, in the village of Andriivna, Balakliia district, a battle took place between the officers of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups. The enemy attacked the checkpoint. As a result of the battle, the enemy group was completely defeated, its members began to flee. They left a wounded soldier in the middle of the field, who was captured by Ukrainian defenders.

Russian ship that fired on ‘f–k yourself' Ukrainians destroyed: report
[NY Post] A Russian warship that fired on a group of Ukrainian border guards after being told to "go f—k yourself" was destroyed in battle, according to a report Tuesday.

"We f—king hit them," a man is heard saying on a recording of the conflict, the Times of London said.

Another man reportedly echoed the famous words of the Ukrainian soldier who defiantly resisted a Russian order to surrender a military outpost on Snake Island in the Black Sea during Day One of the invasion. "Russian warship, go f—k yourself," the man said.

The Valisy Bykov, a small type of warship known as a corvette, was one of two Russian vessels that opened fire on Snake Island on Feb. 24, the Times said, citing the Janes military intelligence group.

The Vasily Bykov was hit during an exchange of rockets early Monday, possibly by a missile fired by land-based Ukrainian forces defending the port city of Odessa, which for days has been bracing for a Russian attack, the Times said.

"Ship was destroyed, it is confirmed," a Ukrainian military source told the British paper. The Ukrainian navy also reportedly said units defending Odessa had "struck an enemy ship," adding: "The enemy has retreated again."

A pointless war over nothing - Ukraine doesn't even want NATO membership anymore, and has totally forgotten about Zekebsky's insane delusion of taking back Sevastopol. A war that will without question cause a huge and lasting increase in global poverty, hunger and freedom.

For what?

Why is our government supporting these deranged and corrupt little shits who are setting the world ablaze?

#3  Economist David P Goldman today in PJ Media about the disturbing parallels betweeen this war and WWI:

Reliving the Nightmare of WWI
WWI had no good guys, no winners, just mediocre, small-minded politicians unable to step back from the brink

The United States could have averted a crisis by adhering to the Minsk II framework of local rule for the Russophone provinces of Eastern Ukraine within a sovereign Ukrainian state but chose instead to keep open Ukraine’s option to join NATO.

That was rational, but also stupid: It backed Putin into a corner. There is no excuse for Putin’s action, but there is an explanation that’s similar to one that applied to his forbears of 1914: Putin chose to attack before the West had the opportunity to arm Ukraine with sophisticated weapons that would raise the future cost of military action.

Question: While stocking up for the next C-19 Strain, likely due in 6 to 7 months.

While shopping we have been noticing shortened/reduced "BEST IF USED BY", "SELL BY", and expiration dates on a lot of products in the stores. We initially figured it had to do with the C-19/21 Pandemic and the related issues it caused on harvesting, production, and transportation to markets.

But when storing the newly purchased items with previously purchased same brand name items. We quickly noticed the older purchased items had further out Expiration Dates stamped on them than the newly purchased items????????

The West Has Declared Financial War on Russia. Is It Prepared for the Consequences?
JULIA FRIEDLANDER

politico.com

The U.S. and Europe are using sanctions to try and stop a war that’s already underway. It’s a huge gamble....

Julia Friedlander is the C. Boyden Gray senior fellow & director of the Economic Statecraft Initiative at the Atlantic Council. She previously served as senior policy advisor for Europe in the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and as director for the European Union, Southern Europe and Economic Affairs at the National Security Council.

#20  Julia Friedlander:

But the West’s response is no longer just pressure — it’s financial war.

As opposed to previous sanctions campaigns, which sought to use pressure over time to bring a country to the table or prompt a longer-term behavior change, the goal of these Russia sanctions is to change military strategy in a war that is already happening.

Can financial pressure force a leader bent on war to alter battle plans — a decision that would need to play out in days, not months or years? Can the U.S. and its partners wreak enough havoc on the Russian economy in time to make war unsustainable? No one can answer that.

South Korea fires on North Korean boat that crossed sea border: report
[NY Post] A South Korean naval ship fired warning shots at a North Korean patrol boat that crossed into contested waters west of the Korean Peninsula, according to a report on Tuesday.

The patrol boat retreated after the South Korean vessel opened fire, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing Seoul’s military.

The South Koreans then seized a second ship with seven North Koreans on board, all but one of whom were wearing military uniforms.

The encounter occurred near the western sea boundary known at the Northern Limit Line, an area that has seen a number of clashes over the years.

The South Korean military said the North Koreans had claimed under questioning that they were not intending to defect and their ship had crossed the Northern Limit Line by accident, according to the Journal.

#1  ...A related thought: I don't particularly care what pronouns/gender/letters you use, but it occurs to me that America - pretty much the most tolerant country on the planet - has never known actual, no-shiat food shortages.

And if they happen here...if you can't buy enough (or any) bread or staples with what little money you have...I suspect that the tolerance for a great deal of things is going to go right out the window. People are simply not going to accept being screamed at when they can't eat.

Which means they - and everybody else trying to buy food - won't have the money to buy our debt.

Which means our globalists will soon have their tits in a vise grip: punishing Russia means causing millions of Egyptians, Syrians, other Arabs and Africans to starve.

Is that what our globalist goofs actually want - to make the entire Arab and African world dependent on exports of US wheat?

Perhaps. All of this will cause the US price of basic staples will continue to soar, which means more subsidies and more inflation and more poverty in the US.

And more dependence on the state. As planned.

#4  The Arab Spring like so many uprisings in the Middle East over the last half century was caused by food shortages. was A good overview:
The Arab Spring was a revolution of the hungry

The brittle, undemocratic regimes had, however, no mechanism of oversight and little resilience to withstand outside shocks. So distant events like a bad crop on the Black Sea or low rainfall in Canada could quickly translate into a political crisis in the Levant or North Africa.

In 2008, world food prices spiked, and, once again, bread riots broke out across the Middle East. Regimes scrambled to cover the shortfall with handouts and subsidies, on the assumption that their populations might tolerate repression but not hunger.

Indeed, rising commodity prices were one of the triggers in the 2010 to 2011 uprisings. Protesters in Tunisia brandished baguettes. In Egypt, many of the revolutionary chants talked about food, and a central demand was for “bread, freedom, social justice” (it rhymes in Arabic).

The first Syrians to rise up against Bashar Assad included many poor farmers who had been displaced by drought and the government’s neoliberal disinvestment from agriculture. Caitlin Werrell and Francesco Femia at the Center for Climate and Security in Washington, D.C., argue that a series of droughts in Syria from 2006 to 2010 created the preconditions for the uprisings — crop failures drove farmers off their land and raised the level of desperation until Syrians directly challenged their ruler.

#6  So predictable.

Why are we doing this? Are we actually trying to set the Middle East and Africa on fire?

Or does Biden and his loopy crew really think that starving Arabs and Africans will rally to our side rather than side with Russia and demand an end to, or get around, the sanctions?

#7  There will be huge food shortages in Africa, Middle East and China. Fertilizer shortage, wheat shortage, droughts and floods have all wreaked havoc with food production. Add fuel costs and shortages to food distribution and you have the perfect storm of global famine.

#9  The blowback from this retarded botch job will be 100x greater than the blowback from the Iraq War fuckup.

It is not possible that this is not by design.

No one could possibly be so stupid as to fail to see the obvious, predictable blowback from trying to extinguish the planet's greatest natural resource producing economy.

Makes you think of the recent Russell Crowe movie about Noah in which God is played by a sadistic little child who throws dice. Was this insane policy cooked up by sadistic little Neocon children indulging their war fantasies?

How do we stop these deranged little children before they destroy us all?

#14  #10 "The USA is the Saudi Arabia of food. We won't starve."

Providing we are willing to stop the massive purchase of agricultural assets and food processing industries by the Chinese. I have no doubt that they plan to ship food home in increasing amounts as this worsens. In the same way, finish the wall to prevent most of central America from moving in when it gets hungry out at home. Time to return to America First in every aspect of our thinking, and fire any public official who doesn't get that! #19  First you have to ditch the grifters at Conservatism Inc. - like CPAC head Matt Schlap. Rod Dreher today:

Against Conservatism Inc's Grift

More and more, people know that a “Republican Congress” for two years did nothing to stem the tide of illegal immigration invasion and endless wars. They know that Republican political operators will use the term “America First” as little more than a mantra hoping you will fall in line.

But they can’t define what it means to put America first, let alone believe in it. Today we are being subjected to demands that America protect the borders of Ukraine, from politicians who have done nothing to protect our own borders and fellow citizens.

But more and more people have seen the path forward, and it does not include any of the major GOP organizations, which do not provide the promised results but only enrich their ranks.

Want a bet it takes longer for the Gas Prices to drop than it di to quickly increase?

BTW: was in Wally World yesterday (gas can LMEO storage project)and listened to several others griping about the Gas Prices.

It was music to my ears to hear a 30 something year old Black-American guy speaking to a tatted white male about the same age, saying outloud....

"Ain't now way hell am I voting for that F___'ing bastards again...."

SIDE NOTE: A lot of GAS PUMPS around here have:

#8  $4.51 in Minden NV yesterday, and food prces at Wally World continue to increase. Most interestingly to me is the continued product shrinkage on items priced higher, Sargento Muenster Cheese 11 slices, and former 1 lb shredder cheeze now 14 oz, Guiness Stout now 14.9 OZ not a pint, etc. Also noted end of last month the increasing number of EBT patrons at the end of the month whose EBT card balances were insufficient and either resorting to cash or taking items out of the cart. Olde Tyme Religion
Karo-kari, vani entrenched in tribal areas of southern Punjab
[Dawn] A fact-finding mission of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistain (HRCP) to southern Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

has found that women in the tribal areas are still subjected to karo-kari
...the Pak practice of murdering women on suspicion of having had 'illicit relations' with other than a close relative...
and vani while law enforcement agencies have failed to provide them any protection.

HRCP has concluded a high-profile fact-finding mission to southern Punjab, comprising chairperson Hina Jilani, vice-chair Punjab Raja Ashraf, council member Nazir Ahmed, and regional coordinator Faisal Tangwani.

The team has noted that women in the tribal areas of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur remain subjected to harmful customary practices, with karo-kari and vani still entrenched in the fabric of their society — to the extent that even the Border Military Police does not provide the protection that victims are entitled to.

Moreover, many women are denied the right to citizenship documents by male members of their families and, as a result, have no political voice.

HRCP sees common use of blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
laws to intimidate Hindu, Christian families for land grabbing

Of particular concern is the situation of religious minorities in the province: the blasphemy laws are commonly used to intimidate Hindu and Christian families for purposes of land grabbing. Forced conversions remain common: in one case brought to the team’s attention, a landlord forcibly married the daughter of a Hindu tenant.

HRCP was alarmed to learn that the district vigilance committees that were set up to monitor and report the use of bonded labour remain non-functional. The restoration of the peshgi system by the Punjab government, amending the Punjab Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1992, is deplorable and must be rolled back immediately.

It is also of grave concern that, according to the bonded labourers HRCP spoke to, they receive a daily wage of Rs800 while the minimum wage is Rs1,300. Additionally, in the power loom industry, workers allege that they are compelled to work 16-hour a day and have no recourse to social security or compensation in case of accidental death or injury.

A serious allegation made by residents of Cholistan is that their applications for allotment of the land they have been settled on for centuries remain pending, with reports that the military have taken over large areas of this land. In addition, the severe scarcity of water and lack of schools for residents need to be addressed.

The team has also noted that lady health workers have continued to struggle without adequate security during their work, often putting their lives at risk in the line of duty and with negligible benefits to compensate them.
