ABC apologizes for Hindu terror plot in ‘Quantico’ after online backlash
[Dhaka Tribune] US television studio ABC has apologies to Indian fans of its crime drama "Quantico" after an episode featuring Indian nationalists trying to frame Pakistain in a terrorist plot sparked online outrage against Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra, who plays a lead role in the show.

"The episode has stirred a lot of emotion, much of which is unfairly aimed at Priyanka Chopra, who didn’t create the show, nor does she write or direct it," said Walt Disney-owned ABC in its statement.

Chopra, 35, is a revered Bollywood star in India, admired for her ability to cross over and achieve success in Hollywood, which has been rare for Indian actors.

After the recent "Quantico" episode, Chopra has faced online attacks at home, and even some calls to boycott her work and the brands that she endorses, including South Korean giant Samsung Electronics Co.

Others called on the government to black out the scene where Chopra, who stars as an FBI agent in the series, holds up sacred Hindu prayer beads as evidence that the plotter in the episode, planning to detonate a nuclear bomb in New York, was an Indian nationalist.

"The myth of Hindu terror, by a fake story, enters American television with the help of Priyanka Chopra. Would any Pak actor betray Pakistain or Islam the way she betrays India and Hinduism?", David Frawley, a Hindu scholar based in the United States, tweeted.

George Soros Complains: ‘Everything That Could Go Wrong, Has Gone Wrong'
George Soros recently lamented the rise of President Trump and anti-establishment parties across the globe, saying "everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong."
Or, from my view everything that could go right did, you jew hating nazi fuck.
Soros made the comment in an interview with The Washington Post published Saturday. He also said that he did not expect Trump’s election, saying, "Apparently, I was living in my own bubble."

The activist billionaire also made the bizarre claim that President Trump would be "willing to destroy the world."

Soros has become known for using his immense wealth to influence politics in the United States and around the world.
And using that wealth to destroy the west and the US.

Guatemala: Fuego eruption 'cooked people trapped in their homes'
[Al Jazeera] Shocked survivors of a devastating explosive eruption of a volcano in Guatemala have said they were not warned in advance to escape a flow of hot gas and volcanic mud that consumed their villages and killed at least 109 people.

Volcan de Fuego, in southern Guatemala, began spewing streams of red-hot lava and shooting out thick smoke and ash on Sunday that rained down onto several regions and the capital, Guatemala City, 30km away from the hardest-hit area.

Nearly 200 people are still missing.

Second suspect surrenders in shooting of ATF agent
[Chicago Tribune] The suspect reported by authorities to be at large following a shooting Thursday in which an undercover ATF agent was shot was in custody Saturday afternoon.

Bernard Graham, 25, of Calumet City, Ill., self-surrendered to authorities at 12:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office Northern District of Indiana.

A second man, Blake King of Chicago, was apprehended previously.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent, who was not identified "due to the nature of his work," was shot in the chest and arm, Special Agent in Charge Celinez Nunez, of the ATF’s Chicago Field Division, said.

"He is going to make a full recovery," Nunez said.

Raymon Truitt II, 28, "was killed in the exchange of gunfire," U.S. Attorney Thomas Kirsch II said. The Lake County coroner’s office ruled Truitt’s death a homicide caused by gunshot wounds. His address was unknown with the coroner’s office, and Lake County court records list recent addresses in Hammond and Merrillville.

Prosecutors filed charges Friday in Hammond’s federal court against King, 19, and Graham in connection with the shooting. The charges include assaulting an ATF agent and using a weapon in the commission of a crime, according to charging documents.

Briefly an on-air reporter in California, Wallace started her political career working in California state politics.

In 1999, she moved to Florida to serve as Governor Jeb Bush's press secretary, and then became the Communications Director for the Florida State Technology Office in 2000.[4] Wallace worked on the 2000 Florida election recount.

Wallace joined the White House staff during President George W. Bush's first term, serving as Special Assistant to the President and Director of Media Affairs at the White House, where she oversaw regional press strategy and outreach.

In 2003, Wallace joined the Bush–Cheney '04 campaign as the Communications Director, where according to The New York Times, "she delivered her political attacks without snarling."(IOW, she sucked up to the press.

On January 5, 2005, Bush named Wallace White House Communications Director.[6] The New York Times story announcing her presidential appointment carried the headline:
"New Aide Aims to Defrost the Press Room," and described Wallace's intentions "to improve
the contentious relationship between a secretive White House and the press.
"

According to The Washington Post, Wallace served as "a voice for more openness with reporters"

Wallace also served as a senior advisor for the McCain-Palin campaign in 2008.

In late October, campaign aides criticized vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

She's a Bush Family/RINO shill.

I'd say she's projecting with her remarks

Congo-Kinshasa: Bemba Acquitted of War Crimes At the ICC
[All Africa] The Appeals Chamber at the International Criminal Court (ICC) has overturned Jean-Pierre Bemba's conviction for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In a ruling issued Friday afternoon, a majority of appeals judges found that the trial chamber erred in finding that Bemba did not take necessary and reasonable measures to prevent the crimes committed in the Central African Republic (CAR) by his subordinate troops 16 years ago.

They also ruled that trial judges erroneously convicted Bemba for specific criminal acts that were outside the scope of the charges confirmed against him by the pre-trial chamber.

Judges Sanji Mmasenono Monageng and Piotr Hofmański disagreed with the majority's decision to acquit Bemba. Other judges on the Appeals Chamber were Christine Van den Wyngaert (presiding), Chile Eboe-Osuji, and Howard Morrison.

Bemba is the most high profile individual tried at the ICC, having served as a vice president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
(DRC) from July 2003 to December 2006, and later as the country's leader of the opposition. He was unanimously convicted by a three-judge panel of the court in March 2016 for failure to deter and punish his Movement for Liberation of Congo (MLC) fighters who committed rape, murder, and pillaging. He was sentenced to 18 years in jail.

Despite today's acquittal, Bemba will remain in ICC detention because he was, in October 2016, convicted for tampering with witnesses before the court. In that case, he was sentenced to a one-year prison term and a fine of €300,000.

Last March, the Appeals Chamber upheld his conviction on the counts of giving false testimony and corruptly influencing witnesses but overturned the conviction over presentation of false oral testimony. Furthermore, the Appeals Chamber asked the trial chamber that convicted him to issue a new sentence for Bemba and his two former lawyers who were convicted alongside him.

Zimbabwe: Zanu-PF the Only Party of Hope - Mnangagwa
[All Africa] The forthcoming elections offer an opportunity to redefine and rebuild the country with Zanu-PF as the only party of hope, President Mnangagwa said yesterday. President Mnangagwa, who is also Zanu-PF First Secretary, said this while addressing the ruling party's Central Committee at Zanu-PF Headquarters in Harare.

"This session further comes in the wake of my proclamation that the harmonised elections will be held on 30 July 2018.

"We are thus meeting at a crucial moment in the history of our beloved nation, as the forthcoming elections provide us with an incredible opportunity.

"We have a chance to redefine, rebuild and revamp our country and move forward into a prosperous future. Today, as we convene, our nation is full of energy, opportunity, freedom and hope. Zanu-PF is again the party of hope," President Mnangagwa said.

The President said the Central Committee had not met as required by the party's constitution due to the numerous meetings he was holding with various sectors of society.

The interactions included meetings with chiefs, captains of industry, religious leaders, students and war veterans.

"In the period under review, guided by the mantra 'Zim-bob-we is open for business' we began a journey to re-engage with the rest of the world and end the close to 20 years of isolation in the bid to build political trust with the rest of the world and reinforce our commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation as we strive to grow our economy and deliver a decent life for our people.

Zimbabwe: MDC Alliance Ropes in Grace Mugabe
[All Africa] Former First Lady Mrs Grace Mugabe reportedly funded top National Patriotic Front (NPF) members to force a recall of NPF interim leader Brigadier General Ambrose Mutinhiri (Retired) to pave way for her ascendency in the party, which is reportedly working to join the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance, it has emerged.

Mrs Mugabe is reportedly angling for the vice presidency in the MDC Alliance once done with Brig-Gen Mutinhiri.

MDC Alliance leader Mr Chamisa, who is also the opposition's presidential candidate, is yet to name his deputy.

NPF national political commissar Mr Jimmy Kunaka yesterday claimed the party's front man Mr Jealousy Mawarire, Mrs Eunice Sandi Moyo and Mr Shadreck Mashayamobe, were being secretly funded by Mrs Mugabe to overthrow Brig-Gen Mutinhiri (Rtd).

Mr Mawarire had earlier in the day, together with Mrs Sandi Moyo, announced the dismissal of Brig-Gen Mutinhiri (Rtd), who was accused of not attending party meetings.

Speaking at a Press conference convened by Brig-Gen Mutinhiri (Rtd) to fire Mr Mawarire and his team yesterday, Mr Kunaka said the Mawarire camp had been captured by Mrs Mugabe in her bid to take over as the party's president.

Arabia
Man commits suicide at Makkah's Grand Mosque
[NATION.PK] A man has did away with himself by throwing himself off the roof of the Grand Mosque in Islam's holiest city of Makkah, Saudi police said on Saturday.

"A foreigner threw himself from the roof of the Grand Mosque in Makkah" to the courtyard below, "resulting in his instant death", state news agency SPA said, quoting police.

The rare act was not the first of its kind to take place in Makkah, the holiest city in Islam ‐ which, like other monotheistic religions, prohibits suicide.

The body was transported to hospital, with an investigation underway "to determine the victim's identity, what led to the act and how he was able to commit it despite the existence of a metal fence", SPA said.

Last year, a Saudi man tried to set himself on fire in front of the Kaaba ‐ the square stone building in the centre of the mosque compound ‐ but was stopped by security forces.

Every year, millions of Moslem pilgrims from across the world travel to Makkah and Madina, Islam's second holiest site, also in western Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

Bangladesh
Khaleda Zia’s doctors say she suffered mild stroke
[Dhaka Tribune] Dr FM Siddiqui, one of the physicians who tended to BNP Chairperson the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
on Saturday afternoon, has confirmed that the incident when she lost consciousness on June 5 was the result of a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) ‐ a kind of mild stroke.

Fearing this to be the harbinger of a major episode, the doctor suggested that the BNP chairperson be immediately tested, diagnosed, and treated as per the instructions of the medical team. He also suggested that she be taken to a hospital ‐ preferably United Hospital ‐ for her checkups.

Earlier in the day, civil surgeon Ehsanul Kabir and three specialists, including Dr FM Siddiqui, visited the old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road to check on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health at around 3pm.

Shairul Kabir Khan, member of the BNP chairperson’s media wing, had earlier confirmed that doctors were scheduled to visit Khaleda Zia on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday night, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that Khaleda Zia was not receiving proper treatment for her ailments.

Rizvi said the BNP chairperson had been suffering from a high fever for three weeks, and she was unable to balance herself on her feet as her legs had been swollen for days.

He had also said that they suspected her of having suffered a TIA on June 5, which caused her to lose consciousness.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia’s new robotic vehicle helps Strategic Missile Force clear mines in tactical drills
[ALMASDARNEWS] Servicemen of a Novosibirsk-based missile formation of Russia’s Strategic Missile Force have used the Listva remote-controlled robotic mine-clearing vehicle for the first time in tactical drills, the Defense Ministry of Russia reported on Saturday.

"The Novosibirsk missile formation used the newest Listva remote-controlled mine-clearing vehicle to escort Yars road-mobile missile complexes along the routes of combat patrolling," the Defense Ministry said, adding that the most advanced mine-clearing vehicle had been used only in military exercises before that.

According to the tactical drills’ scenario, notional subversion groups planted ten remote-controlled explosives along the route of the column’s movement. The roadside kabooms were intended to be detonated but were detected by the vehicle’s emitters. The explosives were blown up before the column of Yars missile complexes started its movement and all the planted bombs were destroyed. The Yars complexes stayed at a large distance from the kabooms.

The robotic mine-clearing vehicle destroyed the explosives both on the roadside and at a distance of 50 meters from the road.

As Russia’s Defense Ministry also reported, more than 300 pieces of engineering hardware are scheduled for delivery to the engineering units of Russia’s Strategic Missile Force by 2020. These include obstacle-clearing vehicles, heavy mechanized bridges, excavators, automobile cranes and other engineering equipment. Wheeled road vehicles designed specially for Russia’s Strategic Missile Force this year will account for over 50% of all engineering hardware.

The Listva remote-controlled mine-clearing vehicle developed specially for the Strategic Missile Force is designed to detect mines and explosives with metal elements and destroy engineer explosive items and improvised bombs with electronic components. Explosive devices are detected with the use of an induction wide-span search module.

Auzzie Army prepares to roll out 'Black Hornet'
[Janes] The Australian Army (AA) will soon roll out the PD-100 Black Hornet Personal Reconnaissance System (PRS) across one of its brigades in Brisbane, the Department of Defence (DoD) in Canberra announced in a 24 May statement.

The rollout and sustainment of the micro unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) is an AUD18 million (USD13.6 million) project and a "key capability milestone for the army as it continues to be a technologically advanced force", said the DoD.

Brigadier Susan Coyle, commander of the AA’s 6th Combat Support Brigade and of the service’s only UAS unit ‐ the 20th Surveillance Target Acquisition Regiment ‐ was quoted in the statement as saying that the rollout is a "significant achievement for the army".

"UASs are a game-changer for the army, providing enhanced situational awareness for better mission execution for Australian soldiers," said the brigadier, adding that the rollout of these micro UASs to AA soldiers is an "exciting example of adopting tactical robotic technology".

The AA operates several UASs ranging from the rotary-wing Black Hornet PRS to large, nine-hour endurance surveillance systems such as the RQ-7B Shadow 200.

The latest move comes after manufacturer FLIR Systems announced in October 2017 that it had been awarded a USD6.8 million contract to supply an undisclosed number of its PD-100 Black Hornet 2 PRSs to the AA.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Will Saudi Arabia be the answer to Israel’s gas conundrums?
[ATimes]
About 80 kilometers off the coast of Haifa in Israel, a string of rigs, platforms and pipelines now work day and night, extracting natural gas from one of the largest reservoirs in the Eastern Mediterranean.

This resource, known as the Tamar Field, now powers businesses and homes throughout Israel. It has helped the country approach self-sufficiency in electricity production, while radically improving its energy import bill.

Along with other neighboring fields, Tamar also places Israel in the normally-enviable position of holding a major natural gas surplus, ready for export.

Yet – so far– Israel has failed to fully capitalize on this bounty.

Instead, a combination of security, politics and prices have kept many of Tel Aviv’s hydrocarbon riches locked firmly beneath the sea floor.

Now, though, the effort to find a way to release this giant resource has led to some controversial plans – as well as some unlikely-sounding deals with former foes.

Domestic and foreign

Israel has several large offshore gas reserves, with the now-depleted Ashkelon field the first to be exploited. Tamar was then discovered in 2009, with the larger Leviathan field uncovered in 2010. Since then, two more fields have also been discovered – Karish and Tanin.

Two companies have been key in developing Tamar and Leviathan – Texas-based Nobel Energy and Israel’s Delek Group – while Karish and Tanin are being developed by Greece’s Energean.

So far, however, only Tamar has been brought into production, while Leviathan is scheduled to begin delivering gas next year. Of the other two, Karish will be the first to begin output, with this scheduled for 2021.

Given the extent of these reserves and the relatively small size of Israel’s domestic market, much of the gas from the most recent discoveries is thus targeted for overseas sale.

On paper, there are also many potential buyers.

To the north is Turkey, with a large and growing economy, while to the northwest lies Europe. Egypt, too, has a fast-growing population and rapidly expanding economic needs, while to the south, Jordan has no oil and gas of its own.

Yet, “all of the possibilities for export of Israeli gas, except to Jordan, are very difficult,” says Charles Ellinas, the CEO of energy consultancy EC Cyprus Natural Hydrocarbons Co.

Nobel has a deal with the Hashemite Kingdom’s national electricity company to supply $10 billion worth of gas via a planned underground pipeline. Israel also already supplies gas to Jordan’s potash and bromine industries, via a third-party US company.

Exporting to Turkey, however, would indeed be a lot more difficult. This is not only because of the current dire relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv, but also due to the unresolved Cyprus dispute. Any pipeline heading for the Turkish coast would have to go through Cypriot waters – a route unlikely to find backers while the island remains de facto divided.

Meanwhile, a route to Europe bypassing Turkey – the proposed East Med Pipeline – would have to travel 2,000km between Israel, south Cyprus, Greece and Italy. This also involves crossing one of the most seismically active sea floors in the Mediterranean, often at great depth.

In addition, “Even if it were technically possible,” says Ellinas, “it would not be commercially feasible.”

Pope Francis: Climate change a challenge of epochal proportions
[Al Jazeera] Pope Francis tells oil executives the world must convert to clean fuel, saying 'energy must not destroy civilisation'.
If Pope Francis had pursued a different path in life he'd be qualified to have an opinion on the subject. Perhaps he'd be better occupied contemplating the nature of sin.

#2  What happens when you have an elite that trade entirely in intangibles? There were rumblings in the past by the old aristocracies that only saw wealth as land, land with rent paying peasants and farms producing their crops. But these are tangible things just as a hammer, a car, or a PC is.
The New Wealth™ was money, intellectual property and the like. But consider this: in the day after the Tulip Craze or the South Sea Bubble, where is the wealth that you made now?

#4  The US restricts dairy imports just as much as Canada does.

I also note that Trump is focused on tangible products only. The U.S. runs a major surplus when it comes to intangible products and services... the future btw. Even with Germany. I don't see him complaining about that.

Republicans used to be smarter when it came to trade.

#10  There was the rather spectacular miscues of the M247 Sergeant York anti-aircraft system:
In February 1982 the prototype was demonstrated for a group of US and British officers at Fort Bliss, along with members of Congress and other VIPs. When the computer was activated, it immediately started aiming the guns at the review stands, causing several minor injuries as members of the group jumped for cover. Technicians worked on the problem, and the system was restarted. This time it started shooting towards the target, but fired into the ground 300 m in front of the tank.
