Today's Johnson Hearing Glossed Over One of the FBI's Most Epic Fails
Failure? What failure? Befehl ist Befehl mein herr!
[TPM] This morning former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson testified before the House committee investigating Russia’s 2016 election subversion campaign. In the course of the hearing we heard the jarring information that Johnson only heard about the initial hacking into the DNC network sometime in 2016, months after the FBI first learned of the intrusion in the summer of 2015. Johnson said he was told that the FBI had contacted the DNC about the intrusion but was told "they don’t want our help."

Moving down a bit:

As a flabbergasted Podesta explained two days later, it is astonishing that the FBI had learned that Russia had compromised the computer networks of one of the country’s two main political parties and was content to have a single agent leave messages with someone at the DNC’s tech support help line to try to sound the alarm. It’s simply astonishing, and even more so since the FBI, as late as December was still in CYA mode spinning the story to reporters as the DNC’s fail.
Ah yes, the "flabbergasted Podesta."
As I said above, it’s not clear to me that this is more than a mix of incompetence and indifference on the part of the FBI and just an unfortunate chain of events. But it’s a critical part of the story, a major ball the FBI dropped – while devoting vast resources to the Clinton email probe – which gave the Russian subversion campaign critical months to do its work before the US government took real cognizance of what was happening.
Emphasis added

Related at Breitbart: Failure, mistakes, errors, the odious Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) now blames a man some call Soetoro.

#1  But it’s a critical part of the story, a major ball the FBI dropped – while devoting vast resources to the Clinton email probe

No 'ball was dropped.' The Russian hacking would have been discreetly handled in the early months of a Hillary Clinton presidency. Absolutely no need to fuel the dangers of her homebrew server and criminal mismandling of classified documents at such a critial, pre-inaugural moment.

The DNC wanted no part of an investigation which would highlight Clinton's misdeeds, and neither did that man some call Soetoro.

Director Comey and the FBI were dutifully compliant. They checked the 'given fair warnings' notifications box, and quietly exited the Kabuki stage as instructed.

A bit strange the Russians would not have been interested in hacking Republicans as well. Of course if one were hacking under the guise of a dastardly, evil Russian, perhaps that activity should be left alone. No need to terminate those useful feeds.

The Russian hacking meme was to come in handy much later as a key component of the Deep State 'regime change' strategy.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
The U.S. Navy's New Stealth Nuclear Missile Submarines: Everything We Know
The Navy is accelerating and increasing design support for the development and construction of its new Columbia-Class nuclear armed ballistic missile submarines -- to ensure progress toward the goal of engineering the most lethal, high-tech and advanced ballistic missile submarines the world has ever seen.

Designed to serve well into the 2080s and beyond, Navy and General Dynamics Electric Boat developers are hoping to leverage years of science and technology development to best position the new submarine to enter service by 2031.
Apparently the Navy thinks we'll be around that long. And North Korea won't be a problem. Nor Iran.
The increased support was announced by the Department of Defense as a $203 million modification to an existing deal between the Navy and General Dynamics Electric Boat to begin manufacture of 17 new tactical missile tubes able to fire nuclear-armed Trident II D5 missiles.

A prior 95-million modification to a Naval Sea Systems Command deal with Electric Boat, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, is a key part of the Navy's broader deterrence strategy to ensure a second-strike nuclear ability from beneath the ocean around the world in the event of a catastrophic first-strike on the continental US.

The effort, which has been preceded by "tube and hull" forging work underway for several years, is part of a collaborative US-UK Common Missile Compartment program.

The US and UK are together immersed in a common missile compartment effort. In fact, the US and UK have been buying parts together for the common missile compartment and working on a $770 million contract with General Dynamics’ Electric Boat. This recent contract modification includes foreign military sales to the United Kingdom. Work will be performed in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and is expected to be completed by December 2023. United Kingdom foreign military sales funding in the amount of $22,957,933 will be obligated at the time of award, a Pentagon statement said.

The US plans to build 12 new Columbia-Class Submarines, each with 16 missile tubes, and the UK plans to build four nuclear-armed ballistic submarines, each with 12 missile tubes.

Earlier this year, ship specifications for the new Columbia-Class submarines were completed and the program is now in detailed design phase and initial production contract, service officials said.

In acquisition terms, development of the new submarines have passed what's termed "Milestone B," clearing the way beyond early development toward ultimate production. Production decisions are known as "Milestone C."

"The program was approved to proceed to Milestone B Jan. 4, authorizing it to enter into the engineering and manufacturing development phase and permitting the transition from preliminary design to detail design," William Couch, spokesman for Naval Sea Systems Command, told Scout Warrior earlier this year.

Ultimately, the Navy hopes to build and operate as many as 12 new nuclear-armed submarines, to be in service by the early 2040s and serve well into the 2080s.

The Navy has begun early construction and prototyping on a new class of nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines designed to help ensure global peace by deploying massive destructive power under the sea.

Columbia-Class submarines are scheduled to begin construction by 2021. Requirements work, technical specifications and early prototyping have already been underway at General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Designed to be 560-feet‐ long and house 16 Trident II D5 missiles fired from 44-foot-long missile tubes, ORP will be engineered as a stealthy, high-tech nuclear deterrent able to quietly patrol the global undersea domain.

The new submarines are being designed for 42 years of service life.

Construction on the first submarine in this new class is slated to be finished up by 2028, with initial combat patrols beginning in 2031, service officials said.

Strategic Nuclear Deterrence

Detailed design for the first Columbia-Class submarine is happening now. The new submarines are being engineered to quietly patrol the undersea domain and function as a crucial strategic deterrent, assuring a second strike or retaliatory nuclear capability in the event of nuclear attack.

The Navy is only building 12 Columbia-Class submarines to replace 14 existing Ohio-class nuclear-armed boats because the new submarines are being built with an improved nuclear core reactor that will better sustain the submarines, Navy officials have said.

As a result, the Columbia-Class submarines will be able to serve a greater number of deployments than the ships they are replacing and not need a mid-life refueling in order to complete 42 years of service.

With the life of ship reactor core, there is not a need for mid-life refueling, Navy developers explained.

By engineering a "life-of-ship" reactor core, the service is able to build 12 SSBNs able to have the same at sea presence as the current fleet of 14 ballistic missile submarines. The plan is intended to save the program 40 billion savings in acquisition and life-cycle cost, Navy developers said.

Electric Boat and the Navy are already progressing on early prototype work connecting missile tubes to portions of the hull, officials said. Called integrated tube and hull forging, the effort is designed to weld parts of the boat together and assess the ability to manufacture key parts of the submarine before final integration.

In 2012, General Dynamics Electric Boat was awarded a five-year research and development deal for the Ohio Replacement submarines with a value up to $1.85 billion. The contract contains specific incentives for lowering cost and increasing manufacturing efficiency, Navy and Electric Boat officials said.

Next-Generation Technology

Columbia-Class submarines are being designed with a series of next-generation technologies, many of them from the Virginia-Class attack submarine. Leveraging existing systems from current attack submarines allows the Columbia-Class program to integrate the most current technologies and systems while, at the same time, saving the developmental costs of beginning a new effort, officials said.

The Columbia-Class will utilize Virginia-class’s fly-by-wire joystick control system and large-aperture bow array sonar. The automated control fly-by-wire navigation system is also a technology that is on the Virginia-Class attack submarines. A computer built-into the ship's control system uses algorithms to maintain course and depth by sending a signal to the rudder and the stern.

Sonar technology work by sending out an acoustic ping and then analyzing the return signal in order to discern shape, location or dimensions of an undersea threat.

Navy experts explained that the large aperture bow array is water backed with no dome and very small hydrophones able to last for the life of the ship; the new submarines do not have an air-backed array, preventing the need to replace transducers every 10-years.

The submarines combat systems from Virginia-class attack submarines, consisting of electronic surveillance measures, periscopes, radios and computer systems, are also being integrated into the new submarines.

The shafts of the new submarines are being built to last up to 10 or 12 years in order to synchronize with the ships maintenance schedule. Existing shafts only last six to eight years, developers said.

The Columbia-Class will also use Virginia-class’s next-generation communications system, antennas and mast. For instance, what used to be a periscope is now a camera mast connected to fiber-optic cable, enabling crew members in the submarine to see images without needing to stand beneath the periscope. This allows designers to move command and control areas to larger parts of the ship and still have access to images from the camera mast, Electric Boat and Navy officials said.

The Columbia-Class submarine are also engineering a new electric motor for the submarine which will turn the shaft and the rotor for the propulsion system. The new motor will make propulsion more efficient and potentially bring tactical advantages as well.

In total, the Navy hopes to buy 12 of the new submarines to serve into 2085 and beyond.

Production for the lead ship in a planned fleet of 12 Ohio Replacement submarines is expected to cost $12.4 billion -- $4.8 billion in non-recurring engineering or development costs and $7.6 billion in ship construction, Navy officials have said.

The Navy hopes to build Ohio Replacement submarine numbers two through 12 for $4.9 billion each in 2010 dollars.

#1  Yeah, according to the contractor, it'll be awesome, with an ice cream maker to boot.
Kinda like the F35... and the B2... and the LCS... and the CVX Gerald Ford (Catapults are a serious problem. As in break aircraft, and all shut down together.)
I'm thinking the contractors have too many salesmen and not enough engineers. But that's just me.

Auto Travel Up - Unexpectedly
[Rooters] Motorists logged 1.2 percent more miles on U.S. roads and highways in April compared with the same month last year, according to U.S. government data released on Tuesday, keeping pace to break last year's record volumes.
1.2% April '16 compared to April '17.
Motorists have traveled 1.01 trillion miles on U.S. roads and highways this year through April, a 1.5 percent increase over the same stretch last year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
But 1.5% for the first four months of this year, compared to last year.
The sustained strength in driving volumes is a good sign for refiners as the U.S. driving season kicks off in earnest.

Arizona is so hot right now planes can't take off and plastic and paint is melting
[Olympian] Arizona is no stranger to heat waves. But even by natives’ own high standards, the past week has been scorching.

The Guinness World Record for hottest temperature ever recorded is 134 degrees Fahrenheit. In Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona, it’s touched 119 degrees and just barely gone below 90 at any point over the past week, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s been so hot that regional flights in Phoenix have been canceled, because some planes cannot be operated in the excessive heat, according to the Washington Post.

And according to social media users, the heat has made some strange things happen on the ground, including melting mailboxes, actual cookies baked in a car and drivers busting out oven mitts just to grab the steering wheel.

#4  It doesn't need to be nearly that hot to disrupt air travel. I was flying White Plains to Charlotte a few years ago on a regional jet, which needed a full fuel load for the trip; temperature was about 90, and significantly hotter than predicted; they had to convince/coerce 6 people to get off so the plane would be light enough to have enough lift from the hotter air to take off.
Posted by: Glenmore || 06/26/2017 9:56 Comments || Top||

#5  There are a lot of reasons why they cant fly. But For the airlines it is usually a flight manual issue at these temps. The performance charts on most of the older regional aircraft only show operations at under 120 degrees. You cant operate the aircraft outside of the performance charts. The aircraft might be well within its capability, but if the performance charts don't go that high they cant legally fly. The asking passengers to get off the plane have more to do with trading weight for fuel, so it depends more on the leg of the flight and the temp.

China, US to work for ‘complete’ Korean denuclearisation
[DAWN] China and the United States agreed that efforts to denuclearise the Korean Peninsula should be "complete, verifiable and irreversible", Chinese state media said on Saturday, reporting the results of high level talks in Washington this week.

"Both sides reaffirm that they will strive for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula," a consensus document released by the official Xinhua news agency said.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had said on Thursday that the United States pressed China to ramp up economic and political pressure on North Korea, during his meeting with top Chinese diplomats and defence chiefs.

China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui met Tillerson and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis during the talks. Yang later met with U.S. President Donald Trump

in the White House, where they also discussed North Korea, Xinhua reported.

The consensus document also highlighted the need to fully and strictly hold to UN Security Council resolutions and push for dialogue and negotiation, which has long been China’s position on the issue.

Turkish police disperse Gay Pride march, fire rubber bullets
[IsraelTimes] At least 22 incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
as Istanbul LGBT activists try to press ahead with event, despite threats and ban from authorities.

Turkish police on Sunday thwarted an attempt by Gay Pride activists to hold a parade in the country’s largest city, Istanbul, in defiance of an official ban from the local authorities.

Police fired rubber bullets at a group of around 40 activists, an AFP journalist reported, a day after the city governor’s office banned the march, citing safety and public order concerns.

Small groups gathered at Taksim Square, but witnesses said a heavy police presence outnumbered the activists, and at least 22 people were detained.

It is the third year in a row that the march has been banned, and organizers denounced the move.

"We are not scared, we are here, we will not change," the Pride Committee said in a statement on Sunday. "You are scared, you will change and you will get used to it.

"We are here again to show that we will fight in a determined fashion for our pride."

'Governors change, we stay’
In one of the biggest LGBT events in the mainly Moslem region, the 2014 Gay Pride parade in Istanbul drew tens of thousands of people.

Last year, with the city on the edge after bombings blamed on the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group and Kurdish murderous Moslems, organizers were denied permission to march.

Riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who defied the ban.

Eleven activists went on trial in Istanbul this week for defying last year’s ban on the Gay Pride march, but they were all acquitted.

This year, the parade coincided with the first day of Eid, the festival marking the end of the holy Moslem fasting month of Ramadan.

City authorities banned the parade after threats from far-right and conservative groups.

Critics accuse President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
of having overseen a creeping Islamization since he came to power, first as prime minister in 2003, and then president in 2014.

“We are not alone, we are not wrong, we have not given up,” the Pride Committee’s statement said Sunday.

“Governors, governments, states change and we stay. Threats, bans, pressures will not deter us…We will not give up on,” it added.
Update from Ynet at 3:40 p.m. EDT:
At least 44 people were detained during a march for LGBT rights that the governor of Istanbul had banned, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

organization criticized the country for barring the event for a third year running.

Anadolu Agency said 20 people who "reacted against" the march were among those detained Sunday. Ultranationalist and religious groups had threatened the 15th Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride March in the week leading up to it.

Organizers said 25 people who tried to go on with the banned event were also detained, including two minors and a Danish activist. They were released after questioning.

The arrested man told news hounds late Saturday that he was drunk when he attacked four men on the train Friday after he was told by his friends that they were "beef-eaters." Eating beef is taboo for many Hindus.

Police said another three Moslems were maimed in the attack by about 20 Hindus.

The Moslems were travelling back to their village in Haryana after shopping in New Delhi ahead of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Police officer Kamal Deep Goyal said an altercation over seat space between the two groups triggered the attack.

"They started fighting over seats in the compartment. Then there are also allegations that some words which hurt religious sentiments were said after which things got out of hand," said Goyal.

Attacks on minority Moslems by Hindu fringe groups have been on the rise, apparently emboldened since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government came to power in 2014.

Scores killed in tanker fire near Bahawalpur
[Al Jazeera] At least 153 people have been burnt alive and dozens of others injured after a fuel tanker overturned and went kaboom! outside the eastern city of Bahawalpur in Pakistain's Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

province.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning as a large number of people gathered to collect petrol from the vehicle, according to rescue services.

Residents could be seen walking past blackened and twisted bodies piled by the side of the road.

Earlier, television footage showed shooting flames and a thick plume of smoke as firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze.

The charred wreckage of dozens of cycle of violences and cars could be seen scattered on the highway, along with kitchen utensils, pots, water coolers, jerrycans and buckets which victims had brought to collect the petrol.

Local sources told Al Jazeera that most of the victims were residents of nearby areas who were collecting fuel from the oil tanker, which had overturned after skidding off a national highway in Ahmedpur East.

Analysts said the reaction of the crowds is not surprising, given the problem of fuel shortages and poverty.

"If you go to these areas of Bahawalpur ... the poverty level here rises up to 65 percent at times," Sabir Shah, a journalist at GEO TV in Lahore, told Al Jazeera.

"In these conditions, with these figures, how can you expect people not to collect cooking fuel for themselves? This petrol is being used as cooking fuel by many people in nearby fields."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Number of drug addicts in Iran doubles in six years on bumper crop in Afghanistan
[IsraelTimes] Opium still ranks as most heavily consumed narcotic in Islamic Theocratic Republic due to proximity to poppy powerhouse Afghanistan.

The number of drug addicts in Iran has more than doubled in six years, with opium the country’s most popular narcotic, local media reported Sunday.

"There are about 2.8 million people regularly consuming drugs" in the country of 80 million people, Drug Control Organization front man Parviz Afshar told the ISNA news agency.

Citing experts from the health ministry, Iran’s Welfare Organization and his own agency, Afshar said the number of drug users was up from 1.3 million six years ago.

He said opium made up 67 percent of consumption, with marijuana and its derivatives accounting for 12 percent and methamphetamine around 8 percent of the total.

"Opium is still the most popular (drug) and methamphetamine use has dropped significantly," he said.

Iran’s neighbor Afghanistan produces some 90 percent of the world’s opium, which is extracted from poppy resin and refined to make heroin.

Iran is a major transit point for Afghan-produced opiates heading to Europe and beyond.

Opium production surged significantly after the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and overthrew the ruling Taliban
...Arabic for students...
By its last year in power, the Taliban had slashed opium output to just 185 tons a year, according to United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
estimates.

But the UN says Afghan production has since rocketed, hitting between 4,800 and 6,000 tons in 2016.

Last year’s bumper crop, aided by better weather, pushed world opium output up by a third on the previous year and helped fund an intensifying Taliban insurgency.

That is despite a decade of international efforts to stabilize the country and billions of dollars spent on persuading Afghan farmers to grow other crops.

The UN’s crime and drugs agency said Thursday that the global narcotics market is "thriving" with opiates causing tens of thousands of avoidable deaths a year.

#1  In a population of approx. 70 million it used to be one in every sixteen iranians was buying and using cheap narcotics. Grown in Afghanistan and refined in pakistan and smuggled into the two southern border provinces of Iran. You mean to say that the figure has improved ( is that the right term ?) to one in eight Iranians?
You could get dope for the price of a pint of milk ten years ago.

And the whores were a problem using the graveyard out side the Moslem seminary. ( flat tomb lid stones were as good as beds although a bit hard on the back ) But that was only in the town of Qom. I don't know how serious the other towns were. Just the seminary towns was all I heard. Between prostitution and dope Islamic Values are a caution.

3 made to leave Chicago LGBT march over ‘triggering’ Star of David flags
Linda Sarsour, one of the organizers of the anti-Trump "pussy march", made it clear in the days following the inauguration that those who are pro-choice or pro-Israel cannot be members of the Progressive left because intersectionality.
[IsraelTimes] Organizers of ’anti-Zionist’ event say rainbow banners held by Jewish participants ’made people feel unsafe’.

A parade in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
celebrating the lesbian community banned three Jewish women carrying Jewish Pride flags.

Organizers of the 21st annual Chicago Dyke March told the women that the rainbow flags with a white Star of David in the center would be a trigger to people who found it offensive.

A Dyke March collective member told the Windy City Times that the women were told to leave because the flags "made people feel unsafe," and that the march was "anti-Zionist" and "pro-Paleostinian."

More than 1,500 LGBTQ individuals and their supporters participated in Saturday’s march. The march was protested at one point by Christian bad boys, according to the Windy City Times.

One of the Jewish marchers, Laurel Grauer, Midwest manager of A Wider Bridge, a group that forges ties between LGBT Jews in Israel and North America, told the publication that she has carried her Jewish Pride flag in the same parade for more than a decade, and said that it "celebrates my queer, Jewish identity." She also said she lost count of the number of people who harassed her over the flag on Saturday.

"People asked me if I was a Zionist and I said ’yes, I do care about the state of Israel but I also believe in a two-state solution and an independent Paleostine,’" Grauer said. "It’s hard to swallow the idea of inclusion when you are excluding people from that. People are saying ’You can be gay, but not in this way.’ We do not feel welcomed. We do not feel included."
That is because you were summarily expelled, my dear. This is not about feelings, but about that single fact.
Update from Ynet at 3:45:
National Director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt called on reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown LGBTQ March organizers to apologize after Jewish participants were ejected from the march for carrying rainbow flags emblazoned with the Jewish Star of David.
A quixotic demand. After all, they still won't get to march with the others.
"It is outrageous that while celebrating LGBTQ pride, Jewish participants carrying a rainbow Star of David flag were asked to leave the Chicago Dyke March. The community of LGBTQ supporters is diverse and that is part of its tremendous strength," said Greenblatt. "Both the act and the explanation were anti-Semitic, plain and simple.
Yes. Intentionally so.
"We stand with A Wider Bridge and others in demanding an apology. We appreciate the Human Rights Campaign’s support and we call on other leaders from LGBTQ and progressive communities to join us in condemning this exclusion."
Perhaps by underlining this other Jewish progressives will start to notice how entirely unwanted they are by those who otherwise share the same objectives.

#7  So Juice cooties is still a thing. Who knew?

As to CF's comment #1, this is an instance of SteveS' Theorem:
For any two warring parties, A and B, there is a third party C that A and B hate even more and will join forces to fight against.

In this case, we have A = LGBTQWERTY, B = Muslims, C = Juice (or more generically, Western Civ)

See the Turkish police disperse Gay Pride march article for a situation where parties A and B indulge their inherent B-ness and A-ness.
