#1  Was it here or elsewhere that I read Roger Ebert's view the other day, about the media ballyhooing murderers like the Columbine Killers; sending the message that if you do something horrible, you will be guaranteed page one coverage for days. Of course, the reporter interviewing him had a meme about violent movies, and Ebert wasn't responding the way she wanted, so the interview never aired.

What if the news media refused to print details about murderers beyond "This person is in custody", and refused to give Westboro the press it craves?

#2  Why mom, that would require that folks in the media business behave in a responsible manner. You know that can't happen. That's why I don't watch the so called news on TV anymore. In fact there is very little on TV these days that I can watch. But I'm afraid there are way too many couch potatoes out there who will watch anything because sitting passively on their butts is easier than doing something active or thinking for themselves.

#7  Brian Ross, investigative reporter (cough, cough, cough) was on the George Stephanopoulos faux news and reported the shooter to be linked to the Tea Party. It never goes the other way. I would fall over stricken if I ever heard one of these clowns say "The shooter or the bomber or the killer was a left-wing extremist or Muslim." No, the first thing out of their pie-hole is Tea Party or right wing extremist.

Today's Idiot
GLENDORA - A man robbed a pharmacy of six bottles of painkillers Friday but was handcuffed quickly after an employee held up a "Call 9-1-1" sign at the drive-thru window.

Glendora police Lt. Jamie Caldwell said a customer waiting for a prescription at the drive-thru saw the sign.

The robbery at Walgreens, 550 S. Grand Ave., was called in at 7:15 p.m.

Caldwell said a man entered the store, jumped over the counter and pulled out what employees thought was pepper spray. He said the man demanded OxyContin.

One employee wrote, "Call 9-1-1" on a piece of paper and held it out for the driver at the drive-thru window to see, according to Caldwell.

"The driver nods and calls us," he said.

Officers who were across the street on an unrelated incident got the call about the robbery.

"They see a guy come out wearing a zipped up sweatshirt in 85 degree (weather) with bottles bulging out of the pockets," Caldwell said.
"Uh, I thought the thermometer used the Kelvin scale."
Officers stopped the man and later arrested him.
"Book him."
He allegedly told police he ran out of insurance, was out of medication and was desperate. Police didn't buy the story.
"Uh-huh. And I'm Fluttershy."
Caldwell said the man also told officers he'd been addicted for 20 years. The suspect didn't have pepper spray.
So they identified him by the DNA from the lips that fell off at the crime scene.
"He had a small black flashlight," the lieutenant said.
"Gimme the drugs, or I shine this light in your eye!"
Caldwell said Donald Prestwood, 50, of Glendora was tossed into the clink on suspicion of robbery. Prestwood was being held at Glendora jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Afghanistan
Fearing persecution Afghan couple flee to Pakistan
[Dawn] An Afghan couple who fled the war-torn country to marry in Pakistain are being held in protective custody amid fears the bride's angry relatives will kill them, officials said on Sunday.

Hewad, 22, who is known by only one name, wed 18-year-old Mariyam Marjman in the town of Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
, around 50 kilometres north of Islamabad, last month after escaping Kabul with the help of a Pak friend.

Marjman told officials a jirga or assembly of her relatives had travelled to Abbottabad with the aim of taking her back to Afghanistan, where she would probably be murdered for marrying a person of her own choice.

"Mariyam declared that Hewad is her husband and both of them were in love before they got married," senior local administration official Imtiaz Shah said, adding that the bride's parents wanted her to marry her dead elder sister's husband.

He said that the couple had brought the two-year-old daughter of Marjman's dead sister with them to Pakistain.

Top local administration official Khan Omarzai told AFP that arrangements have been made to produce both Hewad and Marjman at the high court in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar on Monday.

"The couple is being provided full protection as per court's order," he added.

Marjman was moved to an orphanage with the two-year-old while Hewad was moved to a prison in the northwestern city of Mansehra
...a city and an eponymous district in eastern Khyber-Pakthunwa, nestled snug up against Pak Kashmir, with Kohistan and Diamir to the north and Abbottabad to the south...
with officials in Abbottabad saying "this has been done to provide them full protection".

"We will accept and implement whatever is the court's decision tomorrow," Shah said.

"If the court orders us to give custody of the couple to the jirga, we will do that and if the court decides to keep the custody of the couple, we will implement that verdict too."

Africa Subsaharan
Madagascar army 'retakes' camp after mutiny
Madagascar's army says it is back in control of a military camp close to the airport in the capital Antananarivo after several soldiers earlier staged a mutiny.

The military said on Sunday that the group of mutinous soldiers who stormed the camp were eventually driven out in an assault by government forces. The leader of the rebellion was killed, the army said.

"The situation is under control. Corporal Koto Mainty, alias Black, has been killed," General Raphael Ramasy, chief of staff of the defence minister, told the public television station TVM. Mainty was the bodyguard of former defence minister Noel Rakotonandrasana. Rakotonandrasana was arrested after taking part in another mutiny back in 2010.

"The other mutineers gave themselves up or were arrested," Ramasy said. "Four other civilians were arrested ... Two mutineers and two other elements of the security forces are wounded."

An officer sent in to begin negotiations with the soldiers was shot and later died of his wounds, the army said. Two fighters of each side also suffered injuries, according to the defence ministry.

The island has been wracked by political turmoil over the last three years since the ousting of president Marc Ravalomanana, who has since lived in self-imposed exile in South Africa.

Then-opposition leader Andry Rajoelina led violent street protests against Ravalomanana and eventually seized power in March 2009 with the help of dissident army officers. The rival leaders are scheduled to meet for reconciliation talks next week in the Seychelles.

Madagascar troops mount assault on mutineers
Madagascar's paramilitary police and army on Sunday mounted an assault on renegade soldiers who staged a mutiny at a military camp by the main airport, police said.

An AFP corresondent nearby reported a surge in gunfire around 4:30 pm (1330 GMT), while a police source said the assault had begun against the mutiny, which broke out just days before a planned meeting between rival leaders over a political crisis sparked by an army-backed coup in 2009.

Defence Minister Andre Lucien Rakotoarimasy said earlier that the army had already brought the situation under control at the Ivatu air and naval base near Antananarivo international airport.

"The chief of staff has things in hand," he told AFP after some four hours of heavy gunfire in the morning followed by intermittent shooting. He said the mutineers' demands were unknown, and would not say how many were involved.

Unconfirmed reports said there was shooting also at the airport, and that a negotiator was killed.

A diplomat said the mutiny could be an attempt to derail the landmark face-to-face meeting set for Wednesday in the Seychelles between current President Andry Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana, whom he ousted in the 2009 coup.

The leader of the renegade troops was identified as Koto Mainty, or the "Black Corporal", a former member of the mutinous regiment said, adding that several young recruits had joined him.

The Ivatu base was the scene of a mutiny in November 2010 and an attempted coup against current leader Rajoelina.

Madagascar Troops Mutiny near Main Airport
[An Nahar] Troops staged a mutiny near Madagascar's main airport on Sunday, forcing the suspension of all flights, but the situation is now under control, the defense minister said.

Gunfire erupted at a military base near Antananarivo international airport at 6:00 am (03:00 GMT) and abated after four hours but then resumed intermittently, scaring off dozens of curious spectators, an Agence La Belle France Presse journalist said.

"This morning there was indeed a mutiny led by certain elements. The chief of staff has things in hand," Defense Minister Andre Lucien Rakotoarimasy told AFP.

"It's going on, we don't know anything about their demands for the moment," he added, refusing to specify the number of mutineers.

The leader of the renegade troops was identified as Koto Mainty, or the "Black Corporal", a former member of the mutinous regiment said, adding that several young recruits had joined him.

The mutiny comes ahead of a meeting of the Indian ocean island nation's rival leaders to try to resolve a political crisis that has dragged on since an army-backed coup in 2009 which toppled president Marc Ravalomanana.

Strongman Andry Rajoelina and the ousted leader, who is living in exile in South Africa, signed a roadmap in September 2011 meant to guide Madagascar to new elections, but the deal still has not been fully implemented.

A diplomatic source suggested that Sunday's mutiny was aimed at disrupting the meeting between Rajoelina and Ravalomanana to be held in the Seychelles on Wednesday.

In 2010, Ravalomanana was sentenced in absentia for the murders of around 30 demonstrators killed by his presidential guard in 2009 in protests that led to his overthrow.

Ravalomanana was served with a summons last week over a $23 million lawsuit filed by victims of the February 2009 unrest that led to his overthrow and is expected to appear in a South African court on August 1.

Ravalomanana has twice tried to return to Madagascar, but officials there have both times prevented him and his wife from entering the country.

The 15-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC) has already given the rival leaders a July 31 deadline to reach an agreement.

Unemployment rates rise in 27 US states
[Iran Press TV] Unemployment rates rose in 27 U.S. states last month, the most in almost a year and a reflection of weaker hiring nationwide.

The Labor Department says unemployment rates fell in 11 states and Washington, D.C. - the fewest since August. Rates were unchanged in 12 states.

Nationwide, employers added only 80,000 jobs last month, the third straight month of weak job growth. The national unemployment rate stayed at 8.2 percent.

Unemployment rates can rise even if more jobs are created if more of those out of work start looking for work. The number of Americans searching for jobs nationwide increased last month.

Nevada recorded the highest unemployment rate, at 11.6 percent, followed by Rhode Island, with 10.9 percent. USNews

US poverty to jump highest since 1960s
[Iran Press TV] Poverty in the United States is projected to climb to the highest level in nearly half a century as the recession threw millions of people out of work last year. According to a survey conducted by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named, US poverty could reach a 46-year high, with suburban families, underemployed workers, and children among the hardest-hit people, the news agency reported on Sunday.

The census was based on expert opinions from more than a dozen economists and academics in the US. The figures are expected to be made public just weeks ahead of the November presidential elections.

The data also showed that the official poverty rate could have reached 15.7 percent in 2011, which reflects a whopping increase of six percent compared to the previous year.

"I'm reluctant to say that we've gone back to where we were in the 1960s," said Peter Edelman, director of the Georgetown Center on Poverty, Inequality, and Public Policy.

"The programs we enacted make a big difference. The problem is that the tidal wave of low-wage jobs is dragging us down and the wage problem is not going to go away anytime soon," he added.

#2  Who'd have thought that taxing wages meant people had less money to employ people with and thus higher unemployment and lower wages for the less productive!

It's like it was totally predictable or something. Next you'll be telling me the massive increase in debt (and subsequent bust) was totally predictable too!

Keynesians know this is totally unpredictable.
