Ohio congressional candidate booked on domestic violence charge
Associated Press
CINCINNATI - A Democratic candidate for Congress suspended her campaign Monday after she and her husband were charged with domestic violence.

Stephanie Studebaker and her husband, Sam, were arrested Sunday night after deputies responded to calls about a fight in their home, police said. Each was released on $25,000 bond.

Her campaign posted a brief message on its Web site Monday evening: "Due to personal issues, the Studebaker for Congress campaign is suspending all campaign activities for the time being."

Yep, she's got "issues" all righty.

In case you were wondering, yes, she is supported by the Angry Left. (H/T National Review)

This gal cold-called me a month ago trying to get a campaign contribution. Why someone running for congresscritter from Dayton would be calling a registered Trunk in northeast Ohio to ask for money is beyond me. Gotta give her credit for one thing; when I told her I wasn't interested, she thanked me for my time and politely rang off.

Africa Subsaharan
Mugabe says army will "pull trigger" on opponents
HARARE (Reuters) - President Robert Mugabe warned critics on Tuesday that Zimbabwe's army stood ready to "pull the trigger" against anyone seeking to topple him as a mounting political and economic crisis raises fears of unrest.
Never doubted it for a moment, Bob
Opposition leaders this year called for street protests to end Mugabe's long rule, which they say has reduced a country once seen one of the most promising in Africa to an economic basket-case. But the protests have yet to begin -- leaving political observers wondering if Zimbabweans are simply too cowed to take their grievances to the street.

Mugabe, speaking at a rally to mark the annual Defense Forces day, indicated those fears might be justified. "We want to remind those who might harbor any plans of turning against the government: be warned, we have armed men and women who can pull the trigger," the 82-year-old leader said, departing from his prepared text to deliver his warning in the local Shona language.

Zimbabwe suffers from the world's highest inflation rate of around 1,000 percent, unemployment above 70 percent and shortages of fuel, food and foreign exchange -- leaving most ordinary Zimbabweans reeling and the economy in freefall. But the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), which has come closest to unseating Mugabe, has been weakened by internal squabbles and a split last October over participation in Senate elections.

Mugabe has sent police and security troops to crush previous mass protests, most recently in 2003.

They will have to walk to the uprising first. Many of their trucks are without batteries. Somebody stole then and sold them on the black market.

Cuban TV Airs Video of Ailing Castro
He's improving. Rats. Follow-up on Steve Y's story yesterday.
HAVANA (AP) - Cuban state television on Monday aired the first video of Fidel Castro since he stepped down as president to recover from surgery, showing the bedridden Cuban leader joking with his brother and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Castro appeared tired and pale, yet alert in the videotaped encounter, speaking quietly but clearly enjoying himself as he chatted with Chavez, his close friend and political ally. Acting president Raul Castro was also present for the encounter on his brother's 80th birthday.
As the men bantered back and forth, Castro's voice was inaudible. He was later shown in animated conversation with Chavez, but music played over his words.

The videotape showed the friends sharing a snack and looking at an album of photographs showing them together - including one from a trip Castro took to Venezuela during an earlier birthday. Sentimental music accompanied the footage, which lasted about 10 minutes.

The televised footage - released after still pictures of the same encounter were published in the Communist Party daily Granma earlier Monday - appeared aimed at dispelling any lingering doubts about Castro's recovery from intestinal surgery. Cuban officials have not released details of his condition or disclosed where he is being treated.

Swedish oppo leader leads ahead of Sept vote
But I think we all saw this one coming.
STOCKHOLM - Swedes would prefer to see opposition leader Fredrik Reinfeldt as prime minister after a general election on September 17th rather than the incumbent Goeran Persson, a poll published on Monday showed.

Reinfeldt, the head of the conservative Moderate party and the prime ministerial candidate for a four-party centre-right alliance, was the preferred choice of 47 percent of Swedes, the Sifo poll published in the daily Dagens Industri showed. Just 39 percent of the 1,000 people questioned between August 7th and 10th said they wanted to see Persson, a Social Democrat, stay in power. Persson has served as prime minister since 1996. A total of 14 percent said they were undecided.

The three surveys published last week showed support swinging towards the centre-right alliance and away from the ruling Social Democrats and their parliamentary allies, the Left and the Greens. The Social Democrats have governed Sweden for the better part of the postwar period, with only a few interruptions. The last time the opposition won an election was in 1991.

Hezbollah Foiled By Rocket Proof Boobies
An Israeli woman's breast implants saved her life when she was wounded in a Hizbollah rocket attack during Israel's war with the Lebanese group, a hospital spokesman said on Tuesday. Doctors found shrapnel embedded in the silicone implants, just inches from the 24-year-old's heart. "She was saved from death," said a spokesman for Nahariya Hospital in northern Israel. The woman has been released from hospital.

#3  I've heard, but don't know for fact, that DOD will give you a free pair if you are active duty. Rationale is that helps keep hours and proficiency up for surgical staff.
Posted by: Classical_Liberal || 08/15/2006 15:54 Comments || Top||

#4  There was a big stink about that 18 months ago so the DOD rules are : if the woman is active duty and buys the implants herself, the base hospital will do the surgery for free. That way, the doctors at the military hospital get the experience, and the DOD does not buy the implants - thereby cutting down on the congressional "outrage".
Posted by: Shieldwolf || 08/15/2006 16:14 Comments || Top||

#5  Shieldwolf,

That seems reasonable to me. No civilian insurance plan pays for those. Reconstructive surgery such as post-mastectomy care is an exception, of course.

ok with me as long as they never permit reactive armor.
Posted by: RD || 08/15/2006 17:07 Comments || Top||

#9  Ummm... DOD hospitals will definitly do reductions, as a military neccessity.
As odd as it seems, having smaller boobies can be construed as a military "good thing". Say, like being able to run, without the risk of giving yourself a black eye, or having to wrap yourself in about three layers of ace bandages... and the boulder-holders for women with... ummm, a generous endowment and a small rib-cage are... umm, hard to find and expensive when you do, not to speak of the long-term damage to the shoulders and back.
I was told that reduction surgery as a military neccessity was on the house, and so was reconstructive--- after all, it would keep skilled plastic surgeons interested and up to date, but purely aesthetic implant surgery... best have a really convincing rationale for that.
Really.
Please don't ask me why I know all this.
