10 hurt in Lebanon as quake shakes Middle East
TYRE, Lebanon - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the open-ended Richter scale rocked Lebanon on Friday, injuring 10 people and sending panicked residents out into the streets in the south of the country. The quake, which was also felt across the border in Israel and in the Gaza Strip, caused damage in a number of villages in southern Lebanon while buildings shook in the capital Beirut.

In the southern coastal city of Tyre, residents ran toward the seashore and began reciting verses of the Koran after the tremor struck, an AFP correspondent said.
Right. The earth is shaking, the house is about to slide into a bottomless pit, and I'm gonna run around quoting the Koran. Grandmaw and the parakeet can fend for themselves.
Brilliant! Allan shook the world and you idjits went out and started chanting a bunch of verses! Lawzy you guys are dumb.
Lebanon’s National Centre for Scientific Research said the quake had an intensity of 5.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre located 17 kilometres (10 miles) northeast of Tyre, adding that 10 people were slightly injured. ‘We expect another quake of similar magnitude or stronger in the next 24 hours,’ said centre director Mouin Hamzeh.
"So you'd best memorize the Sura of the Cow real quick!"
The tremor-the second in the region this week-hit at around 1030 GMT. Seismology experts in Israel warn of a major earthquake within years because of a major faultline in the region.
Apparently the Halliburton Earthquake-Tsunami Division field office in Tel Aviv is open for business ...

Britain
Dead tycoon 'had heart disease.' Really.
An exiled Georgian billionaire who collapsed and died at his British home was suffering from severe heart disease, an inquest has heard.
Colonel Mustard, at the country estate, with the iocaine powder!
A coroner was told that the health of Badri Patarkatsishvili, was such that he could have died at any time". The death of the tycoon, who was wanted in Georgia on charges of plotting a coup, was initially treated as suspicious by police. The inquest, at Woking, has been adjourned to a later date.

Serbian gov't adopts punitive measures against Kosovo
Sigh. Back to pushing the rock up the hill.
The Serbian government said Friday it adopted a series of resolutions against the Kosovo Parliament's imminent decision to announce independence of the province, which is under UN administrative rule and considered by Belgrade as a Serbian territory.

The Serbian government said in a statement, quoted by the Belgrade One Radio station, there were "secret resolutions" adopted in a closed-door meeting today which include "punitive" measures against Kosovo. These measures include, among other things, the cutting of power supply and imposing economic siege, it said. The Serbian minority in Kosovo, who live in the north of the province, would not be affected by those measures, it added.
"No, no, certainly not!"
Observers said the Serbian government would consider Kosovo "illegitimate regime" if it declared independence.

Serbian Prime Minister Voijslav Kostunica believed it is important to sever ties with countries recognizing Kosovo's independence, but President Boris Tadic, who has limited authorities, oppose this measure.

Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Tachi said in a statement to Pristina TV that he formed an "emergency committee" to act against the Serbian government's punitive measures. Tachi warned against sabotage actions that might be carried out by the Serbian government once independence is announced.

The Nato forces in Kosovo said they are in control of the situation in the province and would not allow security breaches.

#1  "Possession is very strong; rather more than nine points of the law." — Lord Mansfield (1774)

Serbia no longer has its military and police in Kosovo. It's writ no longer runs there. It can't even issue a traffic ticket.

As Lord Mansfield suggested, no possession means it is no longer theirs. It is part of greater Albania now. They need to get over it.

As Aisha, mother of the last Moor king, told her son Boabdil, as he looked back weeping at Granada as the troops of Ferdinand and Isabella took posession...

"Do not cry like a woman for something you did not defend like a man!"

Putin on Hillary: "a head of state should have a head"
Ben Smith, Politico

When Hillary Clinton said, way back in New Hampshire, that Vladimir Putin "doesn't have a soul," I figured that would be the sort of thing the Russian wouldn't be pleased about. But when I called the foreign ministry the next day for comment, it was Orthodox Christmas, and I let it slide.

He was asked about the remark at his press conference yesterday, however, and indeed wasn't pleased. . . . "'At a minimum, a head of state should have a head,' Putin said."

Clinton Goes All-Out Negative in New Ad
The battle of the airwaves has definitely hit Wisconsin; after the first round of back-and-forth in TV ads over why-no-debate in the state whose primary is Tuesday, the campaign of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has taken a decidedly negative, may we say spine-chilling swing, in this next round. As has been asked allaround, will this shift toward a far more direct attack mode undercut the possible momentum gained by Senator Barack Obama in his spate of new wins this month, or will it turn off voters in a state where issues are issues, thoughtful and pronounced?

Mrs. Clinton’s new TV spot accuses Obama of putting out “false attack ads” in response to her original TV spot that criticized him for not agreeing to debate her in Milwaukee. Mr. Obama’s ad, put out Thursday, said that the 18 past debates and two upcoming forums in Ohio and Texas were enough. The new ad not only calls out Mr. Obama for refusing the debate invitation, but it also reiterates her contention that his health care plan would leave 15 million Americans without coverage.

#7  My Daughter sent me this.

Dear Abby:

My husband is a liar and a cheat. He has cheated on me from the beginning, and, when I confront him, he denies everything. What's worse, everyone knows that he cheats on me. It is so humiliating.

Also, since he lost his job six years ago, he hasn't even looked for a new one. All he does all day is smoke cigars, cruise around and shoot
the breeze with his buddies while I have to work to pay the bills.

Since our daughter went away to college he doesn't even pretend to like
me and hints that I may be a le5bian. What should I do?

Signed: Clueless

Dear Clueless:
Grow up and dump him. Good grief, woman you don't need him anymore! You're a United States Senator from New York, running for President of the United States. Act like one!

Service Workers Union Backs Obama
The Service Employees International Union gave Barack Obama its highly prized endorsement on Friday afternoon. The S.E.I.U.’s endorsement is especially coveted because the union has 1.9 million members and has a rank-and-file that is far more politically active than most other unions’. Moreover, its political action committee is expected to collect more than $30 million this campaign, making it one of the biggest PACs in the nation.

Indonesian teenager dies of bird flu

#1  Damp weather actually inhibits the transmission of flu.

Interestingly, right now, the two most problematic strains are the extremely lethal Indonesian strain, that is threatening to go H2H; and the bizarre southern India/Bangladesh strain, that for some reason seems to kill everything *but* people.

Either one would be a disaster, the former by killing vast numbers of people, but also the latter, by causing widespread starvation.
