Ellie Greenwich, who has died aged 68, co-wrote some of the most enduring pop songs of the 1960s and collaborated with the "Wall of Sound" producer Phil Spector on such classics as Da Doo Ron Ron, Be My Baby (both 1963), and River Deep -- Mountain High (1966).
In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time included six by Ellie Greenwich and her husband and writing partner, Jeff Barry -- more than by any other songwriting team. They had 17 singles in the pop charts of 1964, surpassed only by John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles and the Americans Holland, Dozier and Holland.
Other hits included: Chapel of Love, Leader of the Pack, This is It, What a Guy, The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget, Cherry Cherry, Kentucky Woman, Baby I Love You, The Look of Love, Then He Kissed Me, You Don't Know, and many others.

The NHC forecast remains above the intensity guidance and shows Jimena as of posting time it is a cat 3 and went from tropical storm to cat 3 in only 30 hours
reaching category four strength.
The new forecast track increases the threat to the southern Baja California peninsula. Interests in southern baja and western Mexico should monitor the progress of Jimena. A watch may be required for a portion of that area later today.

[Maghrebia] A Moroccan appeals court upheld a 5-year jail term for Mohamed El Ouazzani, 30, better known as infamous drug baron "El Nene", MAP reported on Thursday (August 27th). Considered one of the world's biggest hashish traffickers, El Nene was serving an eight-year prison sentence for international drug trafficking and attempted murder at Kenitra Prison when he escaped to Spain in December, 2007. Spanish authorities arrested him several months later on the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and extradited him to Morocco.

Oddball Libyan dictator Moammar Khadafy has decided against pitching a tent in Englewood, N.J., on his much-protested first visit to the U.S. next month, a New Jersey congressman says. "I am very pleased that Moammar Khadafy will apparently not be coming to Englewood," said Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.).
Rothman said Khadafy's presence in an air-conditioned luxury tent on the grounds of the Libyan compound in Englewood "would have presented unnecessary safety and security issues for the residents of Englewood and the Libyan diplomats."

Khadafy's plan to come to the U.S. next month to address the United Nations General Assembly has triggered fierce outrage after the hero's welcome home he gave released Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi. Khadafy is expected to seek rooms for himself and his large entourage at one of New York's luxury hotels.
Lucky for him Mr. Guiliani is no longer in charge.
A spokesman for the State Department, which has approved visas for the Khadafy delegation, voiced confidence that the Libyans "will have suitable accommodations and that they will respect the earnest wishes of the people of the region" to keep a low profile.
Like they respected the earnest wishes of Prime Minister Brown that a low profile be kept?

[Bangla Daily Star] Six alleged robbers were beaten to death by mobs and another was killed in a 'shootout' with cops in separate incidents yesterday.
A mob beat four alleged robbers to death in South Fedai Nagar village of Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong early yesterday, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
Two of the deceased were identified as Yunus, 30, and Bablu, 22, of the same village.
Police said a gang of ten robbers was preparing to commit a robbery in the village at around 3:00am. Some of the villagers sensed it, captured four of the robbers and beat them to death.

Police and local sources said, a group of robbers attacked a passenger-bound boat on the Urinda haor of Mithamain upazila yesterday at around 12:00 noon.
On information, a police team led by ASP Asaduzzaman of Austagram circle and OC Manirul Islam of Mithamain Police Station chased the robbers.
The criminals shot at the police and counter fire by police left Sumon Das dead.
Another group of police led by ASP Salah Uddin Talukdar of Bajitpur circle and OC Subrata Kumar Saha of Bajitpur chased the robbers who tried to flee into Buali village of Bajitpur.
Villagers caught the gang members and beat them up leaving Nabi Hossain and Mizbah Uddin died on the spot.
Later, police arrested seven wounded robbers and recovered three machetes, three choppers and homemade arms from their possession.
The robbers had thrown two of their guns into the water, police said.
The injured were admitted to Bajitpur upazila health complex.

[Bangla Daily Star] Criminals hacked two youths to death in Dakkhin Khan of the capital and Savar yesterday.
The victims, Sumon, 22, carpenter by profession, was a resident of Fayadabad in Dakkhin Khan, and Alamgir Hossain, 20, was an employee of a grocery at Nabinagar bazaar in Savar.
Criminals attacked Sumon with machetes around 10:00pm Friday night, Dakkhin Khan police said. He was taken to Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital in Uttara where he succumbed to his injuries around 1:00am yesterday.
In another incident, Savar police recovered Alamgir's body from a dairy farm around 9:30am.
Officer-in-charge of Savar Police Station AKM Nasir Ullah said Alamgir was missing since Friday night when he left the grocery for home at around 10:00pm. Later, locals identified the body.
Police, however, could not ascertain the reasons behind the killing in both cases.

[Bangla Daily Star] Criminals hacked a local Jubo League leader to death in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj yesterday.
The victim, Humayun Kabeer, 30, of Adachaki village, was vice president of Bhangabari union Jubo League.
A group of miscreants stormed into his house about 2:00am and attacked him when he was asleep, Humayun's family said. Hearing him screaming, locals and family members went to his rescue and found him in a critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
Police sent the body to sadar hospital morgue.
A case was filed with the Belkuchi Police Station.
Family sources alleged that the miscreants set fire to their house four days before the incident.

The pressure on Gordon Brown over the UK's dealings with Libya has intensified after Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's son said there was an "obvious" link between their trade talks and efforts to release the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing.
The Tory leader, David Cameron, led a chorus of opposition complaints after Saif Gaddafi said it was "not a secret" that Libya's oil and trade talks with the UK were linked to its efforts to get Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, jailed in 2001 for planting the bomb that killed 270 people, returned to Libya.
But my dears, just because Libya had a nefarious purpose for negotiations does not imply the British government were other than pure as the driven snow in their own motives... and their motives can be imputed from their subsequent behaviour.
The Tories, Liberal Democrats and senior SNP MPs said Brown now had to disclose all the details about ministerial meetings and dealings with the Libyan regime before Megrahi was released last week by the Scottish government.
Saif Gaddafi attempted to dampen down the row by insisting that the prisoner transfer agreement signed by Tony Blair in 2007 ultimately had no bearing on the decision by Scottish ministers to free Megrahi, who is close to death with prostate cancer, on compassionate grounds.

QUITO, Ecuador -- Ecuador's president is threatening to close a major television network after it aired a tape of a conversation between him and a member of the assembly that drafted a new constitution last year. President Rafael Correa said Saturday that Teleamazonas violated regulations against taping private conversations. He warned that spying on the president "is a crime against state security."
The combative leftist leader has been at odds with news media since taking office in January 2007. Teleamazonas has been cited three times for broadcast violations and risks suspension if cited again by the government. A representative for the network did not respond to phone calls about the tape, which involved the constitution approved by voters last September.

[Iran Press TV Latest] Venezuela's top prosecutor has said that the recent street protests tantamount to 'rebellion' against President Hugo Chavez's government. "People who disturb order and the peace to create instability of institutions, to destabilize the government, or attack the democratic system, we are going to charge and try them," Attorney General Luisa Ortega said in a statement.
The move by the Attorney General capped a week of huge street protests, mostly directed against a new education law that critics say is politically charged.
Ortega claimed that opposition groups were looking for "any reason to march, to create chaos, whatever they can, what they want is to destabilize, even by encouraging people to disobey the law."
Last Saturday, thousands of marchers protested against a new education law while police used tear gas to break up the crowds and keep them from marching to the country's National Assembly.

Workers with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 207 have invited members of the community to a meeting Wednesday where they expect to discuss the prospect of striking. "Everybody has to be on the same point," said John Riehl, president of AFSCME Local 207. "Nobody's committed to striking."
"Everybody hopes that [Mayor] Bing backs off these demands," Riehl said of the 10% pay cut and other concessions Mayor Dave Bing's administration is asking the city's union workers to make. "Bing is unwilling to negotiate in any meaningful way."
Bing had planned on laying off 300 employees on Friday, including 113 bus drivers. He changed course Friday morning and instead terminated 205 city workers from various city departments -- but no bus drivers. But that decision isn't permanent. The city will revisit the idea in 30 days.

Ford's labor chief, Joe Hinrichs, was told by UAW officials when bargaining began on Aug. 25 that members would reject further concessions, said two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the sessions are private. Senior negotiators held a daylong meeting yesterday, a third person said. "Their differences are significant and difficult, but they're talking," said Harley Shaiken, labor professor at the University of California at Berkeley. "A long discussion means you have something to talk about; stalemates tend to be short."
Ford, the only U.S. automaker to avoid bankruptcy, is trying for parity in labor costs with General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC. To help those companies restructure, the UAW agreed to a six-year pay freeze for entry-level employees, a no- strike accord until 2015 and fewer union job classifications.

I would like to see Ford show the country they aint taking any sheeit anymore and cut the union loose because it's the only way they can avoid bankruptcy and remain competive in the long term, but alas, 'tis just a dream.

National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan said that Mr. Santhanams statement would lead to increased international pressure on India on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), even though U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had publicly declared that Washington had no right to make demands on Delhi until it had itself ratified the treaty. I think we are going to face pressures from the international community. They dont know Santy I mean, he is extremely bright but he is a bit of a maverick in these matters! But the international community is going to say that this is one of Indias very devious methods of preparing for a test, that [our] scientists are saying that was a fizzle, therefore India may find it necessary to prove itself once again. This is my worry. I hope it doesnt happen.

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, which three years ago opposed tenets of the so-called Akaka Bill that would create a process for Native Hawaiian self-governance, today issued a letter once again opposing the bill.
In its letter to Democrat and Republican leaders of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House, the Commission wrote that it "recommends against passage of the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act...or any other legislation that would discriminate on the basis of race or national origin and further subdivide the American People into discrete subgroups accorded varying degrees of privilege. "Congress has the constitutional authority to re-organize racial or ethnic groups into dependent sovereign nations unless those groups have a long and continuous history of separate self-governance."
The Commission called the Akaka Bill "an attempted end-run around the Supreme Court's decisions in Rice v. Cayetano and City of Richmond v. J.A. Croson Co. The Constitution, however, cannot be circumvented so easily. And even if it could be, we would oppose passing legislation with the purpose of shoring up a system of racially exclusive benefits."
The letter ends by quoting the 1840 Kingdom of Hawaii Constitution, which was signed by Kamehameha III and Keoni Ana, the son of British-born Hawaiian minister John Young: "God has made of one blood all races of people to dwell upon this earth in unity and blessedness."

Hasn't been paying much attention to SCOTUS decrees either. It's been a lot easier to convince 9 people to invert the language or expand the power than to go through the uncertain process of amending the contract. That difficulty, of course, was the intent of the Founding Fathers in making sure changes had the 'consent of the governed'.

The *real* reason behind this is the unholy nightmare that is the BIA. The treaties that were made with many of the various tribes are nonsensical (literally) exercises in gibberish. Some with non-contextual "cut and paste" paragraphs from unrelated documents. They make no sense, then or now.
Add to that the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which has lost or stolen billions in tribal royalties, and most of its records, and now has had its last four or five secretaries issued federal orders of contempt as soon as they entered office.
Fortunately, the non-tribal indigenous peoples, the Alaskans and Hawaiians, are out of that loop. But the Akaka bill would open it all up again. We're talking 50+ years of bitter litigation, and the renegotiation and rewriting of all the Indian treaties.
It's no wonder that reform in this is on the schedule right after a successful manned flight to Alpha Centauri.
