As a part-time freelancer, this is a major pain in the ass. I currently kind of work in the "grey" economy, but do report and pay taxes on a fair share of my income. This kind of economic burden will definitely affect the way I do business. It pushes me toward the black market of outright tax cheats by virtue of sheer necessity.

A major breakthrough in remote wave sensing by a team of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute researchers opens the way for detecting hidden explosives, chemical, biological agents and illegal drugs from a distance of 20 meters.
The new, all-optical system, using terahertz (THz) wave technology, has great potential for homeland security and military uses because it can "see through" clothing and packaging materials and can identify immediately the unique THz "fingerprints" of any hidden materials.
Though most of the research has been conducted in a laboratory setting, the technology is portable and eventually could be used to check out backpacks or luggage abandoned in an airport for explosives, other dangerous materials or for illegal drugs. On battlefields, it could detect where explosives are hidden.
The fact that each substance has its own unique THz "fingerprint" will show exactly what compound or compounds are being hidden, a capability that is expected to have multiple important and unexpected uses. In the event of a chemical spill, for instance, remote sensing could identify the composition of the toxic mix. Since sensing is remote, no individuals will be needlessly endangered.

Dr. Zhang, the J. Erik Jonsson Professor of Science at Rensselaer, is lead author of a paper to be published next week in the journal Nature Photonics. Titled "Broadband terahertz wave remote sensing using coherent manipulation of fluorescence from asymmetrically ionized gases," the paper describes the new system in detail.
The "all optical" technique for remote THz sensing uses laser induced fluorescence, essentially focusing two laser beams together into the air to remotely create a plasma that interacts with a generated THz wave. The plasma fluorescence carries information from a target material to a detector where it is instantly compared with material spectrum in the THz "library," making possible immediate identification of a target material.
"We have shown that you can focus a 800 nm laser beam and a 400 nm laser beam together into the air to remotely create a plasma interacting with the THz wave, and use the plasma fluorescence to convey the information of the THz wave back to the local detector," explains Dr. Zhang.

The military on Saturday called on Moro guerrillas involved in clan feuds to make amends and help restore the provinces denuded forests by planting more trees. Brigadier General Ernesto Aradanas, chief of the 603rd Army Brigade based in Matanog town, said Moro guerrillas involved in skirmishes among several families in Maguindanao could lead a more productive community life by also taking part in massive tree-planting efforts in Barangays (the Villages of) Kabasaran and Nabalawag here. The two villages constitute a major part of the erstwhile Camp Abubakar of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Commanders and guerrillas of both the MILF and the Moro National Liberation Front were reportedly embroiled in personal conflict involving some of their relatives among locally prominent families, particularly in Barangay Meti in Datu Blah Sinsuat town. We may not have fully convinced all the residents to take part in this community endeavor, but we understand that many of its immediate beneficiaries are themselves MILF sympathizers, who care for the future of their children and the children of their children, Aradanas said.
Aradanas, who is married to a Tausog Muslim, said a greater challenge for Moro guerrillas involved in clan conflicts would be to meet the standards of the essence of jihad, by helping rehabilitate the fast-diminishing forest cover.
A Sri Lankan lawmaker ended a death fast Saturday outside the main UN compound in Colombo after failing to get the world body to disband a panel probing alleged war crimes in the country.
Legislator Wimal Weerawansa ended what he had called his death fast after President Mahinda Rajapakse visited him outside the UN compound and asked him to abandon the protest, an official of Weerawansas party told AFP.
The president spent a few minutes with him, gave him a glass of coconut water and that was the end of the protest, the official said.
Weerawansa, 40, had refused to take food or water by mouth since Thursday, but was being fed intravenously so faced no risk to his life, a doctor said. The politician launched a sitdown protest on Tuesday and turned it into a death fast on Thursday.
He had demanded that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon halt a UN probe into alleged rights abuses during the final stages of Sri Lankas civil war between Sri Lankan troops and Tamil rebels last year. Weerawansa, the leader of the National Freedom Front, a coalition partner in the government, quit his cabinet post as housing minister on Friday to deflect allegations that his campaign was being orchestrated by the government.
Hundreds of supporters had gathered around him as protest organisers played Buddhist prayers over a public address system. The supporters dispersed after Weerawansa was taken away in an ambulance.
Ban asked Sri Lanka on Friday to normalise conditions around the UN office in Colombo after days of angry demonstrations. Earlier in the week he recalled the UNs top envoy to the island, Neil Buhne, for consultations. The UN chiefs office said the strong reaction to the UN probe was not warranted, adding the expert panel was acting only in an advisory role.

Congratulations Grunter. I had a large chimichanga with beans, rice, and salsa. Washed it all down with a pair of ice cold Modelos while watching Spain celebrate their World Cup win.
along with home BBQ'd Carne Asada, salsa, cheese, super-large tortillas, chopped onions, cilantro, sour cream, and diced tomatoes.... a regular death march, I tell ya
