Copyright Troll's Assets Targeted for Seizure
The legal woes of Las Vegas-based copyright-trolling firm Righthaven continued Sunday when one of its creditors moved to seize its assets.

The development comes a week after the deadline passed for the former litigation factory to pay defendant Wayne Hoehn $34,000 in legal fees for successfully defending himself against a Righthaven copyright lawsuit. Righthaven had asked U.S. District Judge Philip Pro of Nevada to stay the fee award, saying it might slip into bankruptcy if forced to pay.

No stay was granted. So Hoehn's attorney, Marc Randazza, asked Judge Pro on Sunday to "authorize the U.S. Marshalls to execute Hoehn's judgment through seizure of Righthaven's bank accounts, real and personal property, and intangible intellectual property rights for levy, lien, auction or other treatment appropriate for satisfaction of Hoehn's judgment." -Short Attention Span Theater-
Cowboy Corrdinator's Scantily Clad Play Chart
Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan had a picture of a model wearing a revealing outfit on his play chart during Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Ryan and the Cowboys are mum about the odd inclusion. If he does speak about it, the real reason will almost certainly be far less fun than the speculative ones. Is it the visual equivalent of smelling salts? A reminder to play the "Cover 2" defense? Or just some eye candy to distract from seeing Kyle Kosier all the time?

SI.com's Hot Clicks discovered that the picture is of actress and model Diora Baird, who briefly appeared in "Wedding Crashers" as the woman who told Owen Wilson he was full of it. Her other credits include "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" and "Accepted." The photo on the play sheet orginally appeared in the magazine FHM.

You've gotta love the Ryan brothers. Calling out Bill Belichick? Ridiculous tattoos? Those feet videos? Voicemail trash talk? Nothing against Tony Sparano, but if he got fired and Rob was hired to replace him as Miami Dolphins coach and then had to face his brother twice a year, this would be the greatest thing to ever happen to coaching matchups, right? Forget "Hard Knocks," HBO could do a "24/7: Ryan Brothers."

Housing riots rock Algiers
Roads are blocked, sporadic festivities erupt between protestors and police, and buildings are vandalised by rioters. Public disorder roiled Algiers and its suburbs this week as residents vented their anger at what they describe as "social injustice".

The latest episode of riots took place in Ain Benian, west of Algiers. Residents erupted into the streets on Monday (September 12th) to press for housing that they have been waiting ten years for. More than 200 families live in dire conditions in the shantytown of Oued Koreich.

"The authorities have betrayed us," Amine told Magharebia. "We're the victims of the floods which struck the capital in 2001. At the time, officials reassured us that we wouldn't have to stay there for more than three months. That was ten years ago."

His seven family members had pinned great hopes on the operation to re-house 3,000 families in the capital, which was launched a few days ago. To their surprise, they found out that the authorities had excluded their shantytown from the project.

Not far from Oued Koreich, in Diar El Kaf, tensions heated up at the beginning of the month and again on September 12th. Residents protested the choice of re-housing locations and accused authorities of lying.

"They promised us F4 class accommodation with all mod cons," Saleh complained. "But once we got there, we saw that we'd be getting F3. To make things worse, the site is a long way from the town. Our children will have to travel 3km to school."
"Uphill. In both directions. Through a rabid weasel preserve."
The families blocked the road. A delegation from the local council headed out to meet representatives of the families. An uneasy calm took hold in the district, but residents vow to resume their protests if their grievances remain unaddressed.

The Diar Echems district witnessed the most violent festivities. On the eve of the re-housing of 399 families, protestors scuffled with law enforcement officers. Riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse demonstrators, who retaliated by hurling stones and petrol bombs. Rioters also stormed the head offices of Equitablement & Ensemble Pour une Algeria Developpée (EEPAD), Algeria's largest internet provider.

Several people were maimed on both sides. The 399 families affected by the re-housing plan said the anger was justified. Residents had hoped to be resettled in Draria instead of Birtouta, Salim, a father and one of the families' representatives, told Magharebia. Authorities refused to meet their demands.

"They told us in no uncertain terms that the decision was 'irreversible' and that we would be re-housed in Birtouta," he said.

To blunt the growing anger, the Wali of Algiers pledged that more than 10,000 homes would be "signed off starting this month and through October, and all the house moves would be finished by the end of this year". Mohamed Kebbir Addou warned that the operation "required patience, understanding and discipline".

"Let those who want to go to their new homes do so, and those who do not want can stay where they are," he said.

For his part, Housing Minister Noureddine Moussa on September 5th asked the people who had not yet been allocated a new home and who were suffering in dilapidated buildings to wait their turn. "It takes a lot of time, materials and human resources to build a home," he said.

Morocco faces fiscal crunch
Morocco needs to rein in public spending and curb the cost of government. That was the message from Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi to ministers earlier this month in guidance on the draft 2012 state budget.

With regard to employment, El Fassi called on his colleagues to make provision only for what was absolutely essential for the process of government. The state's fleet of motor vehicles, procurement, rental of buildings and communication services are other areas where the government will look to make savings. The prime minister also intends to cut spending on catering and accommodation and spend less on conferences and overseas visits. Less money will be spent on project studies.

Subsidies will be limited to 3% of GDP in order to "allow for extra leeway in the budget so that the government's books can be balanced".

In addition to the spending cuts, authorities are also exploring ways to raise new revenue to see the kingdom through its current financial difficulties. The government was reportedly looking into a wealth tax, something welcomed by many members of the public, but Communications Minister Khalid Naciri denied the reports on September 7th.

At the same time, efforts will be made to ensure that investment is not affected. The prime minister underlined that the various government departments must maintain an adequate level of investment while taking into account the need to support priority development areas.

Morocco is currently in a tough economic and financial position that calls for prudence, according to economist Adil Mahdaoui. In his view, government revenues have been stagnant for several years due to corporate and income tax breaks. He said the situation was exacerbated by the burden of subsidies.

Mahdaoui suggested that a solidarity tax and a policy of priority-based governance be introduced so that a balance can be maintained. He added that the next government will have a very difficult task on its hands and will have to draw up an emergency action plan.

The bid to cut spending is leading to fears of public-sector job losses, sociologist Moha Chirabi said. A number of pledges have been made and thousands of young people are still unhappy with the situation, he said, though the guidance memorandum stresses the need to create as many jobs as possible in the circumstances. Chirabi said he was concerned about the level of support being given to the most vulnerable members of society.

But Communications Minister Naciri dismissed the concern, saying the government was committed to the poorest in society. He stated that a desire to support society was central to the government's plans.

He has also pointed out that the government planned to create a social solidarity fund and to find ways of financing it in order to relieve the burden on Compensation Fund, from which all social categories benefit.

Dupe URL: Italy: Bigamist immigrant's wife reports husband over rival spouse
(AKI) - The second wife of a longterm Muslim immigrant in Italy has reported her husband to police after authorities allowed his first wife to join the household in the northern city of Treviso from Senegal.

The 45-year-old immigrant's second wife, who has twin daughters of eight with him reportedly cannot countenance living with him, his second wife and their two sons of 15 and 16 with his first wife.

The man, who has lived in Italy for over a decade, runs little risk of prosecution for bigamy, however. Under Italian law, bigamist long-term immigrants are allowed to bring more than one wife to live with them in their adoptive country provided they are 'integrated'.

Nobel Laureate With Agenda Lied About Radiation 1946, Still Fouls Us Up Today
University of Massachusetts Amherst environmental toxicologist Edward Calabrese, whose career research shows that low doses of some chemicals and radiation are benign or even helpful, says he has uncovered evidence that one of the fathers of radiation genetics, Nobel Prize winner Hermann Muller, knowingly lied when he claimed in 1946 that there is no safe level of radiation exposure.

Calabrese's interpretation of this history is supported by letters and other materials he has retrieved, many from formerly classified files. He published key excerpts this month in Archives of Toxicology and Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis.

Muller was awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize in medicine for his discovery that X-rays induce genetic mutations. This helped him call attention to his long-time concern over the dangers of atomic testing. Muller's intentions were good, Calabrese points out, but his decision not to mention key scientific evidence against his position has had a far-reaching impact on our approach to regulating radiation and chemical exposure.

Calabrese adds, "This isn't an academic debate, it's really practical, because all of our rules about chemical and low-level radiation are based on the premises that Muller and the National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) committee adopted at that time. Now, after all these years, it's very hard when people have been frightened to death by this dogma to persuade them that we don't need to be scared by certain low-dose exposures."

"One could argue that Muller single-handedly undermined above-ground atomic testing, which is a good thing," Calabrese says. "But after uncovering this lie, I'm starting to contemplate what society would have looked like if the regulatory community had felt free to use a threshold model. Members of that 1956 NAS BEAR committee didn't see the domino effect of their actions on our society. Muller's impact on the world of today is almost incalculable. He couldn't have imagined it. But we shouldn't have to live with it."

#1  So as not to confuse him with the other Hermann Muller, his full name is Hermann Joseph Muller.

He was wiped out in the 1929 stock market crash, that gave him enough interest in communism to emigrate to the USSR. But because of Lysenkoism, he had to leave and come back to the US.

#2  What I expect is for the number of homicides, suicides, and fatal training accidents to go up a little, with *nobody* stupid enough to attribute them to the deceased being homosexual, lest the entire command be punished.

The downside to this is that now, even the *rumor* of being a homosexual could be a death sentence, so anyone assigned such a rumor must be given a transfer on unrelated grounds.

Likewise it must be made *abundantly* clear that spreading such rumors will get someone severe non-judicial punishment, also on unrelated grounds.

#3  I'm not in the military and I know Anyonymoose is describing the way things were a decade ago or so. Is it really like that now?

My understanding is that most of the military are not dumb-reactionary hicks that will kill gays pell-mell. I think a more likely response is a number of folks don't reup. They've been ground down through constant deployment and if serving besides gays really drives them nuts there is little reason to stay.

I did 4 years and OUT, good riddance.

#5  most likely rj. I expect a lot of middle grades will start evaluating whether they want to stay in with even more layers of PC that tell them to ignore things that undermine unit cohesion and morale. It's not everyone, but enough out there that just need to make a problem that then hide behind mommy skirts for protection against discipline that otherwise would be handed out to others for similar behaviors. It destroys not only the unit cohesion, it ultimately undermines the integrity of the command system. 'They don't want to hear it or deal with it' finally leads to something big blowing up in peoples faces. The bottom line is they'll get the same degree of effectiveness that the Russians live with.

#6  I have 5yrs and change left...that, and 3kids it's too late to punch the ticket. However, I doubt I'll stay beyond 20. I don't mind the deployments but too much PC non-sense and subpar civilian leadership (& even military leadership) has left me w/little motivation to go beyond 20.

I'm still surprised not one General or Adm re-signed/retired in protest over this. Politicos in uniform. I saw and gave enough tours to Flag grades on my recent deployment that it really took off my rose colored glasses. Too many old guys worried about adding the next star IMHO.

#7  I'm still surprised not one General or Adm re-signed/retired in protest over this.

#8  Here are the problems with the Comprehensive Review Working Group’s (CRWG) report.

While the questionnaire CRWG used never actually asked if respondents favored repeal of DADT, it presumes to know the answer. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates confidently opined, “a strong majority … two-thirds, do not object to gays and l*sbians serving openly in uniform.”

The report asked whether the presence of homosexuals in a unit would affect its ability to “get the job done.” The report offered the fact that 70% answered to the affirmative. This answer can very defensibly be construed to mean a substantial 30% foresee problems following the end of DADT.

Of the 400,000 active and reserve military personnel surveyed via E-mail, just 28% responded. This universe would be scarcely acceptable if there were only 400,000 personnel in our armed forces, but it is dubious given the fact that we have 2.2 million people in uniform. Based on the actual number the response was just 5%.

The report includes no explanation of how the selected respondents were chosen or any defense of the sample as being a true random sample.
