Hospital in bid to free Reagan shooter
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A US government mental hospital is seeking to eventually set free John Hinckley Jr., the man who tried to assassinate ex-president Ronald Reagan in 1981, CNN reported on its website.

Hinckley, now 56, was committed to St Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington in 1982 after he was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the shock shooting of Reagan and three others, including Reagan's press secretary James Brady.

Prosecutors asked a closed court on Friday not to release him, CNN said. In their filing, they called Hinckley "a man capable of great violence" and said his mental condition left some concerns "that this violence may be repeated," the report said.

The hospital wants Hinckley to be able to live near his 85-year-old mother in Virginia.

Hospital lawyers and doctors filed a motion under seal at the end of July asking that Hinckley eventually be placed on "convalescent leave," but prosecutors quoted it in their own filing, making it part of the public record.

US District Judge Paul Friedman had scheduled up to a week of court hearings on the issue to start November 28.

Hinckley, a college dropout, waited for Reagan to walk out of a Washington hotel where he had given a speech on March 31, 1981. Hinckley fired his six-shot .22 revolver at the then-US president.

Reagan was seriously wounded but recovered. Brady suffered a serious brain injury and never was able to return to his White House duties.

#4  Nancy Reagan’s letter to John Hinckley

To: John Hinckley
From: Mrs. Nancy Reagan

My family and I wanted to drop you a short note to tell you how pleased we are with the great strides you are making in your recovery.. In our fine country’s spirit of understanding and forgiveness, we want you to know there is a nonpartisan consensus of compassion and forgiveness throughout.

The Reagan family and I want you to know that no grudge is borne against you for shooting President Reagan. We, above all, are aware of how the mental stress and pain could have driven you to such an act of desperation. We are confident that you will soon make a complete recovery and return to your family to join the world again as a healthy and productive young man.

Best wishes,
Nancy Reagan & Family

P.S. While you have been incarcerated, Barack Obama has been banging Jodie Foster like a screen door in a tornado. You might want to look into that.

Mali Police Arrest "Human Trafficking Network" between Mali, Lebanon
[An Nahar] A man and woman in Mali were tossed in the calaboose on Tuesday and charged with "human trafficking" mainly of young women, police sources in Mali told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The trafficking was occurring between Leb and Mali, the source added.

The two were tossed in the calaboose following a complaint made by a human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
organization to the moral police in Bamako.

The president of the organization accused the two people of "human trafficking and the use of physical violence and sexual exploitation" of Mali women who are sent to Leb to work as house maids.

In a call with AFP, a Mali woman working in Leb said that she came to Leb after being "promised to receive 3000 Euros in three years by working as a house maid", adding that she wants to go back home.

The woman also said that she was raped and "not getting any treatment when I am sick."

Is Alzheimer's an Infectious Disease?
This is very interesting.

The brain damage that characterizes Alzheimer's disease may start out in a form similar to that of infectious diseases, according to a new study. The underlying mechanism of Alzheimer's is very similar to prion diseases like mad cow.

It involves a normal protein that becomes misshapen and is able to spread by transforming good proteins into bad ones. The bad proteins accumulate in the brain and form plaque deposits that are believed to kill neuron cells.

For the current study, researchers injected the brain tissue of an Alzheimer's patient into mice and compared the results to those from injected tissue of a control without the disease. None of the mice injected with the control showed symptoms of Alzheimer's, while all of those injected with Alzheimer's brain extracts developed plaques and other brain changes associated with the disease.

Researchers said the findings open the possibility that Alzheimer's cases may arise from infectious processes.

And if this mental disease could be infectious, perhaps Islam could also be an infectious mental disease.

#1  It has long been known that the spirochete bacteria of syphilis can cause dementia, but it has been recently suggested that about half a dozen other common oral spirochetes may take advantage of gum infections to take a direct path to the brain.

If this is the case, the specific preventative treatment would be simply to brush teeth on a biweekly basis with ordinary baking soda, which kills such spirochetes within 5 seconds. Combined with a water pic, to disrupt colonies of those bacteria hidden beneath the gums.

Ordinary toothpaste would not do this, but is also important to use against plaque and to provide fluoride.

Dentists long suspected a connection with Alzheimer's and chronic gum infections, and scientists have found a much higher percentage of spirochetes in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Such bacteria do not have ready access, usually, because of the blood-brain barrier, but a gum infection gives them a direct path.

'Sesame Street' unveils muppet to teach kids about hunger
Sesame Street has a new muppet who is hungry for more than just cookies.

The iconic kids show is set to unveil a new impoverished puppet named Lily, whose family faces an ongoing struggle with hunger issues. Lily will be revealed in a one-hour Sesame Street primetime special, Growing Hope Against Hunger, which is being sponsored by Walmart. The special will star country singer Brad Paisley and his wife Kimberly Williams Paisley, as well as the Sesame Street Muppets.

“Food insecurity is a growing and difficult issue for adults to discuss, much less children,” said the Paisleys in a statement. “We are honored that Sesame Street, with its long history of tackling difficult issues with sensitivity, caring and warmth asked us to be a part of this important project.”

The special will share the stories of real-life families to raise awareness of hunger issues in the United States, as well as strategies that have helped these families find food. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that 17 million American children — nearly 1 in 4 — have limited or uncertain access to affordable and nutritious food. Walmart is sponsoring the show as part of a $1.5 million grant toward the initiative and holding screenings in select communities.

Topless photo scandal on eve of Spanish duchess's wedding
Danger, Will Robinson! Mouseover can be fatal!
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Spain's fabulously wealthy 85-year-old Duchess of Alba faced a topless photo scandal Tuesday on the eve of her wedding to a civil servant 25 years her junior.
If he's 25 years her junior he's 60, which implies she doesn't want him only for his body any more than he wants her only for hers. So he gets money. What's she get?
She gets to shoot pool with a rope...
... in the dark. Really dark.
A 30-year-old photograph of the duchess as she sunbathed topless in Ibiza was splashed on the cover of the racy Spanish magazine Interviu, reportedly prompting a legal threat.
The picture was taken 30 years ago? When she and her udds were 55? Pervs around the world are lining up to see that, no doubt about it. 55-year-old groodies receive no competition from 20-year-old honkers stretched for mostly naked miles on the Costa Brava.
"We are considering suing for interfering with her rights to privacy," her friend and lawyer Javier Saavedra
Saavedra? Isn't that a Klingon name?
was quoted as telling show business news site Vanitatis on Tuesday.
Presumably she was letting them all hang out with a reasonable expectation of privacy, either on her own or someone else's private property or far out to sea.
The twice-widowed aristocrat, renowned for her frizzy hair and colourful dress sense, will marry 60-year-old Alfonso Diez on Wednesday in the chapel of her 15th century Palacio de las Duenas in Seville.
La duquesa was not a comely young chick even 65 years ago. Except for her tiara nobody would have given her a second glance on the Costa Brava. She appears to have been pretty homely, with a facial conformation best described as 'unfortunate.' Today her hair looks like an electrified fright wig and the remains of her phizz bear the unmistakable imprint of at least a half dozen too many unsuccessful plastic surgeries. Despite my stubborn heterosexuality, I'd sooner have a picture of Nikita Khrushchev nekkid than one of la duquesa.
Spain's media, particularly the lively gossip shows and press, are devouring every detail of the nuptials and the duchess' tussle with six children who were doubtful about the match.
"He only wants you for yer money, Ma!"
The noble has said she had to work hard to overcome her offspring's objections. She showered her five sons and one daughter several months ago with much of her estate -- palaces, mansions and treasures including masterpieces by artists from Goya to Velazquez, Murillo, Rembrandt and Rubens.
"Here! Have some riches! Now shut the hell up! Ungrateful wretches!"
But she kept control over the assets, ranging from palaces to lavish estates reputedly worth between 600 million and 3.5 billion euros ($850 million and $5.0 billion), until her death.

#13  Her plastic surgeons really did not do her any favors, not only with the Botox but also with the silicone injections.

Still she holds the world record for the most aristocratic titles, possessing at least 44 noble titles and 150 hereditary ones and at 85 she danced flamenco, more or less, at her wedding. She looks to be significantly more lively than some 65 year old people I know.

Mugabe dismisses ill health reports
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Zim-bob-we President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Octogenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
has brushed aside reports that he is ill saying he was in Singapore to rest and see his daughter who is studying in Asia.

The veteran ruler had quietly left the country last week and Information Minister Wesbster Shamu on Saturday said he was in Singapore for a medical review.

But on his return late on Sunday, President Mugabe told journalists from the state media that he was healthy.

"I go away for two days, resting, seeing my daughter and you think I have been nostalgic about having left home," he said.

He was described as jovial when he arrived at the Harare International Airport.

President Mugabe's daughter is studying in Hong Kong.

He has gone to Singapore several times to meet her but he also revealed early this year that he has used the trips to get medical attention.

The 87 year old leader had an operation to remove a cataract in one of his eyes in January in the Asian country.

Mr Shamu had told The Standard newspaper that he had gone for a review following the operation.

As speculation on President Mugabe's health mounts, leaked US embassy cables revealed that in 2008 Mugabe's confidante and central bank governor, Dr Gideon Gono told American envoys that the president had cancer and would die in three to five years.

Not Too Big to Fail Twice--Dexia Bank
This bank was already bailed out once in 2008.

From the article:

Dexia's breakup, three months after it got a clean bill of health in European Union regulators' stress tests, transplants Europe's banking crisis from the continent's periphery to its heartland. The Brussels- and Paris-based bank, which received a bailout in 2008, is being rescued again after its short-term funding evaporated as Europe's sovereign debt crisis worsened.

Jihad banner displayed at Polish soccer match against Israelis
Supporters of Poland’s Legia team unfurled a huge “Jihad” banner during a recent game in Warsaw against Hapoel Tel Aviv. The banner was green, and “Jihad Legia” was written across it in white Arabic-style font. Green is one of Legia’s team colors, but it is also the color of many Islamist groups and parties.

“Some Legia fans have been known for anti-Semitic and extreme-right behavior for years and they had a chance to express their hatred of Jews again when Legia played an Israeli team, this time adopting a pseudo-Islamist guise,” Rafal Pankowski, who runs the UEFA-backed Football Against Racism in Europe network, said.

Legia’s spokesman Michal Kocieba said the club disapproved of the banner, and that the matter is being investigated.

There have been calls for the team to be penalized. “A fine is the most likely penalty. And UEFA may even ban Legia fans from the second leg in Tel Aviv [scheduled for December 15],” Miroslaw Starczewski, deputy head of security at Poland’s PZPN football association, stated.

#6  mourn a pure example of American entrepreneurship and overcoming a challenging start:

"Steven Paul Jobs was born Feb. 24, 1955, in San Francisco to Joanne Simpson, then an unmarried graduate student, and Abdulfattah Jandali, a student from Syria. Simpson gave Jobs up for adoption, though she married Jandali and a few years later had a second child with him, Mona Simpson, who became a novelist.

Steven was adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs of Los Altos, Calif., a working-class couple who nurtured his early interest in electronics. He saw his first computer terminal at NASA's Ames Research Center when he was around 11 and landed a summer job at Hewlett-Packard before he had finished high school."
