-Lurid Crime Tales-
Today's Idiot
ST. CHARLES, Mo. — Police say an intoxicated man who broke into a St. Louis-area church might have avoided the Gray-Bar Hotel if not for a case of the munchies.
"I gotta get away but I gotta have food. Okay, I'll get some food. The police won't be on my tail just yet, right?"
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 24-year-old Andrew Steven Jung of St. Charles is charged with three felonies and tossed into the clink on $30,000 bond following the March 8 break-in of the St. Peters Catholic Church in St. Charles.

Responding officers found that a deep freezer had been damaged, and ice cream had been taken. Jung was spotted walking about three blocks from the church — three sheets to the wind and with ice cream on his face and clothing.
"Yeah, there's nothing to give me away, now is--****!"
Court documents show that Jung is on probation for heisting dough and/or stuff from another church nearby.

Massachusetts Principal Cancels Honors Assembly, Too 'Devastating' to Non-Honors Students

An Ipswitch, Ma., middle-school principal has canceled his school's annual honors assembly because it was too upsetting for some students. Boston's Fox affiliate reports the explanation of Principal David Fabrizio, the man at the center of the silliness: "Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients' families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade point average."

Fabrizio also justified his decision by claiming it was unfair to reward good grades -- which can be be influenced by the home environment and supportive parents -- because not all of students have access to equal amounts of academic and emotional support.
On the other hand, if there's no recognition given for achievement there's less incentive to achieve. There will always be that small minority who achieve for the sake of achievement, but you can always get them by catching them pointing fingers at each other, or by searching their purses for aspirin.

#7  Some wealthy person (or business) in that town needs to hold an honors ceremony someplace outside of the school for these kids. Invite them and their families, have a ceremony and heavy hors de oeuvres (sp?) afterward (or even dinner), and specifically disinvite anyone from the school administration.

As far as that goes most of the kids are good kids still even into 8th grade. But the PC stresses on them are fierce.

So none of you are special. And all of you are special...

#2  Company officials said personal information is given to WebMD, and that CVS will not have access to employee’s personal health information.

Okay so I lie to WebMD, now what? How does CVS know who to charge $600 / yr?

#4  Correct and don't forget what Obamacare does you can no longer assess rates for med conditions, gender or age, but you can for tobacco usage and wellness plans. expect a lot more employers to begin bio screenings
Posted by: Beavis || 03/21/2013 12:43 Comments || Top||

#5  How does CVS know who to charge $600 / yr?

My mother works for CVS. They know who to charge because the screenings are done in-house by CVS employees, from now through May. Those who don't show up are the ones they'll charge.

Anecdotally, my mother said there were a lot of heavyset black women in the waiting area, looking VERY VERY angry. She's hoping maybe this will cause them to re-think their support for Obozo.
Posted by: RandomJD || 03/21/2013 13:12 Comments || Top||

#6  Random, how does CVS doing the screenings square with the claim "that CVS will not have access to employee’s personal health information." ?

Posted by: AlanC || 03/21/2013 15:33 Comments || Top||

#7  Exactly the question we've been asking. I could be mistaken - it could be contractors or insurance company folks, not CVS employees, physically doing the screenings. But it's hard to understand how CVS will NOT have access to information collected within its own buildings.

Either the days of HIPAA are over, and/or CVS is going to get their pants sued off. Most of the measures employers would like to take to cover their losses are illegal, with the effect that gradually health insurance may no longer be offered as a benefit of employment. That IS the idea behind Obamacare, after all - to drive private health insurance into the ground and crash the existing system. To manufacture a crisis that only government can fix, with a "universal" socialized system.
Posted by: RandomJD || 03/21/2013 16:13 Comments || Top||

#8  Previously an insurance carrier had to spread the risk over the group's population if you we had an adverse medical condition, gender rates mattered and the overall age of the group. What we used to call tier rates, so all employees payed the same rate, employee w/kids same rates, employee spouse same rate, family same rate. Tier rates, these are going away

Now there are 43 rate bands 21-64 you go up slightly each year but the 21-64 can be no more than 3-1 as opposed to the old 8 or 10-1. So now it's based on do you smoke and participate in the company wellness program. If the employer sees a 35 year old paying what 50 something year old should pay he either smokes and or doesn't participate in the wellness program.

That will be how employers know.

Asteroid heading for New York? You better pray, NASA chief tells US Congress
NASA chief Charles Bolden has advice on how to handle a large asteroid headed toward New York City: Pray.

That's about all the United States - or anyone for that matter - could do at this point about unknown asteroids and meteors that may be on a collision course with Earth, Bolden told lawmakers at a U.S. House of Representatives Science Committee hearing.

An asteroid estimated to be have been about 15m in diameter exploded on February 15 over Chelyabinsk, Russia, generating shock waves that shattered windows and damaged buildings. More than 1500 people were injured.

Later that day, a larger, unrelated asteroid discovered last year passed about 27,000km from Earth, closer than the network of television and weather satellites that ring the planet.

[Libya Herald] Zawia Appeal Court , today, Wednesday, sentenced the well known Libyan actor and TV personality Yousif Gheryani, to five years imprisonment for having opposed the 17 February revolution and causing harm to undisclosed citizens.

Known as "Qizqiza", Gheryani was arrested a year ago and accused of misleading the public at the beginning of the revolution about events. He appeared on a TV channel known as "Al Jamahariya" and broadcast a programme direct from Zawia.

Central African Rebels to Resume Fighting
[An Nahar] Central African rebels said Wednesday they would resume fighting after a deadline given to the government to meet their demands under a peace deal expired.

"The ultimatum is over. We will return to arms," Colonel Djouma Narkoyo, one of the rebel military chiefs, told Agence France Presse. He said the Seleka rebel coalition was working on a new strategy.

The rebels launched a major offensive on December 10, bringing them to the outskirts of the capital Bangui, over the government's failure to implement earlier peace agreements such as integrating former fighters into the army.

A January 11 peace deal led to the formation of a unity government led by a member of the opposition, Nicolas Tiangaye.

China-Japan-Koreas
Major computer crash in South Korea; hackers suspected
[Dawn] Computer networks at two major South Korean banks and three top TV broadcasters went into shutdown mode en masse Wednesday, paralyzing bank machines across the country and prompting speculation of a cyber attack by North Korea.

Screens went blank promptly at 2 pm with skulls popping up on the screens of some computers, a strong indication that hackers planted a malicious code in South Korean systems, the state-run Korea Information Security Agency said. Some computers started to get back online more than two hours later.
"Hmmm... Skulls on the screens, is it? Le Gume, I suspect hackers!"
Police and South Korean officials investigating the shutdown said the cause was not immediately clear. But speculation centered on North Korea, with experts saying a cyber attack orchestrated by Pyongyang was likely to blame. The shutdown comes amid rising rhetoric and threats of attack from Pyongyang in response to UN punishment for its December rocket launch and February nuclear test.

Europe
Russia May Want A Cyprus Naval Port In Exchange For A Bailout
The key graf in the report from Ekathimerini:

It is likely the Russians will ask for some form of compensation for such an investment. A naval port in Cyprus for the Russian fleet and access to the country's natural gas reserves are among the rewards Moscow might seek.

This sounds right to me. Gaining the (or at least a) concession on the natural gas reserves in the sea-bed around Cyprus would allow the Russians to maintain their strangle-hold on gas supplies to Europe. That's power in a very real way. The naval base idea is the insurance policy in case Syria goes belly-up for them and Tartus is no longer available. It lets the Russians keep their hand in the game.

And there's no reason why they couldn't bargain for both.

After the Aircraft Carrier: 3 Alternatives to the Navy’s Vulnerable Flattops
Interesting piece at Wired about one of the several larger debates in the Navy today: whether to continue construction of new Ford-class super-carriers or to reconsider whether the carrier is survivable -- and whether the Navy has better ways to do the job they do.

I'm no naval strategist and I won't attempt to make the argument one way or the other. But the outcome has significant implications for the war on terror and for how we contain regional thugocracies such as Iran.

#1  They've been playing this tune since the 80s. Right up there with the tank is obsolete. It doesn't discount the issue of survivability but the alternatives aren't anymore survivable if hit. Even less so given a smaller crew for damage control. Dispersed for defense means your point defense is also dispersed/less per unit.

#2  including the tiny "carriers" we had well over 100 at the end of WW-II.

One could put a minimal deck and a cat for X-47s on some of the previous generation of big supertankers for a song.

Not lots of people - storage cabinets/elevators with drones and a rusting looking hulk that nobody gives a real notice too until you launch something.

Think of stuff parked off Indonesia or one of those anchorages for surplus ships...

Also, think of the rusty and dented junker car that nobody notices, plates covered with mud sitting on the side of a road in a low rent area. Even the gangbangers don't bother with it. But, it has a great conditioned engine covered with dirt and grease under the hood and the broken shocks are really deflated airshocks.

EXCLUSIVE OF ANY ISSUES AS PER ALLOWING WOMEN IN FRONTLINE COMBAT.

IMO the possibility of a US-China-Japan, etal. conflict in NE Asia will de facto test the US' theory about seeing NO MORE MAJOR INTER/MULTI-STATE WARS THRU YEAR 2050 IFF NOT THE REST OF THE 21ST CENTURY.

THE "GREAT GAME OF GEOPOLITICS" = "SUBSTITUTION OF NATIONS + WEALTH" DOES NOT END JUST BECAUSE THE COLD WAR IS OVER OR AS PER "GLOBAL WARMING" [GWCC].

--------------

As for Carrier alternatives, the Artic fails to mention skyborne Dirigibles used as "motherships" for squadrons or wings of Armed UAVS.

Lest we fergit, INDIA = is supposedly working on concepts whereby Stealth Combat Surface Ships can submerge + fight like UW Submarines, wid minimal loss in speed or maneuver.

VICE VERSA???

* GWCC = YOUR SHIPS WANT ANTI-SOLAR LUBES + SEALANTS.

#6  Thank you Joe, for bringing everything into perspective.

I mean that very sincerely and affectionately. It took a while, but once I began to understand your language I really began to appreciate all that you have to offer. And you offer a lot. :-)

And W. Modem -- I love you too!

#7  Like the idea of small cats on super tankers.
fixed wings launching / recovering to blimps was tried between the 2WWs and shelved.
Japanese had sub-based aircraft, not practical.
Do not like the small crew concept ala Zumwalt DDG: damage control run by a computer is a neat idea until an incoming round takes out the network: then HAL is blind. And reduced manning removes backups; think Forrestal fire when most of initial fire fighting crew got wiped out by exploding ordnance. When you are underway, there ain't no 9-1-1 to call.

#8  Working on the Ford-Class. My over-active imagination goes into overtime visualizing Carter, Clinton and Obama class, er, equipment.

Carriers present a great visual, but they are expensive and increasingly vulnerable.

IMhO, the future will bring us strategically-placed hypersonic delivery systems w/o on-board pilots....

#9  I'm thinking an updated Monitor with 21st Century Just in time Armor, Efficiently Crewed and able to hit the 6 sigma first time thru. Iron is cheap, sailors are not, so maximize our strong points and send potential adversaries a strong message. That message being.... WE ARE INSANE.

BTW, do you think a helicopter pad would mess up the lines of a Monitor?

If not, why not, answer quiescently and provide insights and links to nowhere.

#10  Not if it's on top of the turret, Ship.
Posted by: Deacon Blues || 03/21/2013 12:24 Comments || Top||

#11  Another cool option would be a large container ship with the outside containers having drone choppers ....drop the rusty doors and let loose a swarm of bees.
Posted by: Water Modem || 03/21/2013 12:52 Comments || Top||

#12  Makes sense Deacon, if it's on top of the turret it would allow for the use of a towed passive array. Lord knows we like passive stuff. Of course it would require turning off the steam plant while the array was in use.... humm.... perhaps a small mast with a stay sail right in front of the turret. That might require more berthing, so really hot bunking might be on order for a few enlisted. An armoured tent on the after deck might be able to handle the overflow in good weather.

#13  I see smaller carriers. The type the marines and UK have. Load it up with a couple of helicopters and a lot of drones and you can deal with all but the biggest problem. You could probably buy two or three for the cost of a Ford Class while buying only one so you could show the same number of counters on the big map and pretend we hadn't degraded our defense.

#14  I'm thinking my Monitor should be able to be able to do more than just cover a river entrance. To this end I have decided to delete the turret in favor of a ship with turret capabilities. Gawd willing the turret module should be ready in Spring 1866. While this is being developed the basic "Monitor" hull form should be replicated to maximize the number of Monitors there are. The sleek no frills Monitor offers an array of possibilities. Troop transport, horse mule transport, sight seeing vessel. The modualarity of the Monitor is the wave focus of the future.

I remain yours sirs

I pray for the quick arrival of this Monitor as we are being hounded by this blackguard remanent of the Merrimac.

Do not worry about the new module, but make haste to Newport News ASAP with what you have.

Imran Khan elected chairman unopposed
[Dawn] Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
has been elected chairman of Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) unopposed during the intra-party elections on Wednesday, DawnNews reported.

The cricketer-turned-politician was elected unopposed as no other candidate dared to contest for the top post.

Speaking to media representatives after submitting his nomination papers, Khan informed that no one will be eligible to hold the post of the party chairman for more than two terms.

Khan has been advocating that the intra-party polls will ultimately end politics of dynasty from the country.

Acid victim succumbs to injuries
[Dawn] A woman succumbed to acid burn injuries at a hospital on Tuesday a day after she was critically injured in an acid attack near Miani Sahib Graveyard in Mozang.

Police have not yet arrested the accused, identified as Saleem Ahmad alias Ishaq, of Yakki Gate. On Monday, Naziran Bibi of Mangtanwala, Nankana was passing through the Ghazi Ilm Din shrine when the accused threw acid on her and fled.

Police shifted the body for autopsy after the woman died at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. A case under Section 302 and 7-ATA was registered on the complaint of the victim's brother Imran who was accompanying her at the time of the attack.

Civil Lines SP (Investigation) Tariq Aziz said police were conducting raids to arrest the accused in light of the information from the victim's family. He said the motive behind the attack would only be determined after the arrest of the accused, adding the victim could not give a statement before her death.

Mozang police's investigation suggested Naziran was previously married twice, had three children with her first husband and seven with second.
