U.S. border agent shoots, kills 'illegal alien' in California scuffle
[Rooters] SAN DIEGO, California (Reuters) - A U.S. border agent on patrol in Southern California shot and killed a suspected illegal immigrant during a confrontation not far from the border with Mexico, after the agent was pelted with rocks, officials said.

"Fearing for his life the agent discharged his service issued weapon, resulting in the death of one assailant," the U.S. Border Patrol said in a statement after the incident in the Otay Mountain area near the Mexican border east of San Diego.

The Border Patrol said the agent had been trying to arrest several suspected illegal immigrants when he was hit by rocks, one of which struck him in the head. Two suspected illegal immigrants were arrested during the incident, which took place before 7 a.m. (1500 GMT), the Border Patrol said.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been criticized in recent years over concerns that agents may have sometimes been too quick to use lethal force. Sixteen members of Congress called for a review of use-of-force incidents and policy in 2012. The agency said in September it would train officers to defuse threats.

Tuesday's shooting, which took place about 100 yards (meters) from the border in a rugged area 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean, was not the first to involve stone-throwers.

In 2011, a Border Patrol agent in Arizona fired through the border fence in Nogales, killing a 17-year-old Mexican stone-thrower. The killing spurred protests. The U.S. Justice Department said last year it would not bring charges against that agent because the fatal injury occurred in Mexico.

Authorities did not immediately release the gender and age of the suspect shot to death on Tuesday, and did not say who threw the rocks at the Border Patrol agent. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department was investigating the shooting, said Lieutenant Jason Vickery.

The agent suffered injuries to his head and hand when he was struck by rocks, said Gabe Pacheco, a representative with the National Border Patrol Council, a union for U.S. border agents. man who fought with him and tried to take the agent's gun.

A month ago, a U.S. Border Patrol agent who had been tracking illegal border crossers shot and killed a man who fought with him and tried to take his gun in the Arizona desert near Mexico, police said.
Hat tip to the Border Agent.

#1  Sorry about the kid getting shot. But those people need to learn that it's not OK to throw rocks at our people. A good way to teach them it's not a game and to "defuse threats" is to shoot back. But every time some congress critter gets his panties in a wad about a border agent defending himself it only encourages the stone throwers.

Nordic farms flourish on fur comeback
[NEWS.YAHOO] Fur has made a comeback on the world's most important catwalks, fostering a thriving industry in the Nordic region to the dismay of animal rights activists.

In the 1990s, supermodels like Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell posed in the buff for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) under the slogan "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" -- part of initiatives that helped make fur politically incorrect.

Two decades later, mink and fox fur have become regulars in the most prestigious fashion shows.

According to www.fashionista.com, 70 percent of designers used fur in their fall-winter collections in 2013, a trend that seems set to continue in this year's shows.

Some professionals think the comeback may be due to the financial crisis.
Or maybe the weather...
"If you're in a situation where the economy is on a downward trend, politicians tend to focus on essentials -- how to get economic growth going again, securing jobs," Fur Europe lobby head Bo Manderup said. "The luxury of political correctness may have gone down the drain with the financial crisis."

In the last 10 years, global mink fur production has doubled, reaching 66 million skins last year, according to Finnish auction house Saga Furs.

China Pillages Africa Like Old Colonialists Says Jane Goodall
[An Nahar] China is exploiting Africa's resources just like European colonizers did, with disastrous effects for the environment, acclaimed primatologist Jane Goodall has told AFP.

On the eve of her 80th birthday, the fiery
...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob...
British wildlife crusader is whizzing across the world giving a series of lectures on the threats to our planet.

And the rising world power's involvement on the continent especially raises alarms when it comes to her beloved chimpanzees and wildlife habitats.

During the last decade China has been investing heavily in African natural resources, developing mines, oil wells and running related construction companies.

Activists accuse Chinese firms of paying little attention to the environmental impact of their race for resources.

"In Africa, China is merely doing what the colonialist did. They want raw materials for their economic growth, just as the colonialists were going into Africa and taking the natural resources, leaving people poorer," she told AFP in an interview in Johannesburg.

The stakes for the environment may even be larger this time round, she warns.

"China is bigger, and the technology has improved... It is a disaster."

Other than massive investment in Africa's mines, China is also a big market for elephant tusks and rhino horn, which has driven poaching of these animals to alarming heights.

But Goodall, who rose to fame through her ground-breaking research on chimpanzees in Tanzania, is optimistic.

"I do believe China is changing," she said, citing as one example Beijing's recent destruction of illegal ivory stockpiles.

"I think 10 years ago, even with international pressure, we would never have had an ivory crush. But they have," she added.

Caribbean-Latin America
Foreign Exchange crisis to intensify
According to a source in Venezuela's Central Bank, the country's international reserves have dwindled to $21 billion -- less than half the reserves of Colombia, an economy of the same size. Worse yet, $12 billion of Venezuela's dwindling reserves is in the form of gold that is claimed by China as security for more than $30 billion in loans made in the last two years. Because Venezuela is not keeping up with oil deliveries to service that Chinese debt, the gold cannot be touched.

Another $7.5 billion of the reserves is in the form of bonds issued by Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, and Nicaragua, a source in the Central Bank told me. Apparently that amount used to be held in U.S. Treasury bonds, but the regime traded these for useless paper from some of the region's most insolvent countries. These bonds cannot be liquidated for cash because they are worth less than their face value, making their sale illegal under Venezuelan law. Thus, what is left in the bank is less than a half-billion dollars, which would cover the cost of about two weeks worth of imports. So shortages of essential goods will worsen in the days ahead.
Caveat here: This is by Roger Noriega, who saw Hamas and Hezbollah gathering at the junction of Brazil and Vzla. Somewhat ummmmm.... crazy. Still the foreign exchange numbers kinda match other sources.

China-Japan-Koreas
China concerned at Japan holding weapons-grade plutonium
(Reuters) - China said on Monday it was "extremely concerned" by a report that Japan has resisted returning to the United States more than 300 kg (660 lb) of mostly weapons-grade plutonium, the latest dispute between the two Asian neighbors.

Japan's Kyodo news agency said that Washington had pressed Japan to give back the nuclear material which could be used to make up to 50 nuclear bombs. Japan had resisted, but finally given in to U.S. demands, it added.

The material was bought for research purposes during the 1960s and the two governments will likely reach an official agreement on its return at the Nuclear Security Summit at The Hague in March, an official at Japan's Education Ministry said.

China is involved in a bitter territorial dispute with Japan and has warned Japan is trying to re-arm.

"China believes that Japan, as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, ought to rigorously respect its international commitments to nuclear safety and non-proliferation," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing. "For a long time, Japan has not returned the stored nuclear materials to the relevant country, which has caused concern in the international community. China is of course very concerned."

Japan, the world's only victim of nuclear attacks in the final stages of World War Two, does not have nuclear weapons, unlike China, and it is the government's stance that it will not obtain them.
Though they could build a working bomb inside a year...
Deteriorating relations between Beijing and Tokyo have been fuelled by a row over a chain of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. Ships from both countries frequently shadow each other around the islets, raising fears of a clash.

Ties have worsened further since China's creation of an air defense identification zone over the East China Sea and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine honoring war criminals among Japan's war dead.
But it's perfectly OK for North Korean and Iran to have nukes. Right?

#3  At last check, CHINA is urging Japan to adhere to the US request to return 300-kg of Plutonium, i.e. an amount equivalent to 20-40 NucBombs of an estimated 2000-3000 same that Japan's alleged Plutonium or Nucmat stockpiles could quickly produce in case of War or -Zilla attack.

Clearly Nippon returning or eliminating only the minority 10%-or-less while keeping the remainder makes the country a purely CONVENTIONAL MILITARY POWER, NOT A NUCLEAR POWER.

China rejects UN criticism in North Korea report, no comment on veto
North Korea[Egypt Independent] China rejected what it said was "unreasonable criticism" of Beijing in a new UN report on human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
abuses in , but it would not be drawn on whether it would veto any proceedings in the Security Council to bring Pyongyang to book.

North Korean security chiefs and possibly even Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
, the leader of the country, should face international justice for ordering systematic torture, starvation and killings comparable to Nazi-era atrocities, UN Sherlocks said on Monday.

The unprecedented public rebuke and warning to a head of state by a UN inquiry is likely to further antagonize Kim and complicate efforts to persuade him to rein in his isolated country's nuclear weapons program and belligerent confrontations with South Korea and the West.

The UN Sherlocks also told China, the North's main ally, that it might be "aiding and abetting crimes against humanity" by sending migrants and defectors back to North Korea to face torture or execution, a charge that prompted a sharp rebuke from Beijing.

"Of course we cannot accept this unreasonable criticism," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a briefing on Tuesday. "We believe that politicizing human rights issues is not conducive towards improving a country's human rights.

"We believe that taking human rights issues to the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
is not helpful to improving a country's human rights situation."

Hua would not answer what she said was a "hypothetical question" on whether China would use its veto powers if the report was brought to the UN Security Council for further action. Diplomats have said China will most likely block any such proceedings.

Asked why China blocked UN Sherlocks from going to the North Korean border, across which many North Koreans cross illegally, Hua said she could not comment and would have to look into the matter.

"These people are not refugees. We term them illegal North Korean migrants," she added.

China deals with these people appropriately "in accordance with international and domestic laws and the humanitarian principles", Hua said, declining to provide an estimate for how many of these people have cross into China.

#1  We are doomed to short memories.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 or Hungarian Uprising of 1956[5] (Hungarian: 1956-os forradalom or felkelés) was a spontaneous nationwide revolt against the government of the People's Republic of Hungary and its Soviet-imposed policies, lasting from 23 October until 10 November 1956. It was the first major threat to Soviet control since the USSR's forces drove out the Nazis at the end of World War II and occupied Eastern Europe. Despite the failure of the uprising, it was highly influential, and came to play a role in the downfall of the Soviet Union decades later.[6]

Deadly clashes around parliament in Kiev
Photo by Vlad Sodel/Reuters. Hat tip Vaughn Wallace for the image.
Violent clashes have erupted during anti-government protests in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, with at least nine people, including two policemen, dead. In the worst violence in weeks, police used rubber bullets and stun grenades as thousands of protesters marching on parliament.

A deadline set by the security forces for the violence to end has passed with no immediate sign of police action.

The clashes came as MPs were due to debate changes to the constitution. The proposals would curb the powers of President Viktor Yanukovych, but the opposition say they were blocked from submitting their draft, meaning no debate could take place.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she was "deeply worried" by the escalation of violence, and urged politicians to "address the root causes".
She then commenced to wring her hands most earnestly...
Russia blamed the upsurge in violence on "connivance by Western politicians and European structures" and their refusal to consider the "aggressive actions" of radical factions within the protest movement.

Ukraine's unrest began in November, when Mr Yanukovych rejected a deal with the EU in favour of closer ties with Russia. The mood had calmed in recent days, but protest camps remain on the streets and the opposition - which insists the president must resign - had warned the government it risked inflaming tensions if it failed to act.

On Tuesday, thousands of protesters tried to march on the parliament building to put pressure on the government to address constitutional reform. But the march was blocked by lines of police vehicles.

The BBC's David Stern in Kiev says it is unclear what sparked the clashes - protesters and police have blamed each other. Unlike in previous weeks, violence took place in a number of locations, our correspondent adds.

Some protesters ripped up cobblestones to throw at police. Others threw smoke bombs. Police fired stun and smoke grenades, and rubber bullets. Protesters also attacked the headquarters of President Yanukovych's Party of the Regions, temporarily smashing their way in and setting it on fire before being forced out by police. One person - believed to be an employee - was found dead inside.

The bodies of three protesters were found inside a building close to parliament. Another three bodies were seen lying in the street. The interior ministry said two policemen had died of gunshot wounds.

The heads of the security services and internal affairs ministry gave the protesters a deadline of 18:00 local time (16:00 GMT) to put an end to the clashes, warning they would "use all the possible methods" to end it.

The entire Kiev metro has been shut down, and police have converged on the edges of Independence Square, the site of the main protest camp since November. But the deadline came and went with no apparent sign of security force action.

Reforms would see president stripped of powers to appoint PM, cabinet members and regional governors - and possibly snap elections. Ruling party is reportedly amenable to the proposal in theory, but says it needs to be discussed by non-governmental organisations and sent to Council of Europe's Venice Commission for Review. The changes would mean President Yanukovych losing some of the powers he has gained since his election in 2010, including the power to appoint the prime minister and most cabinet members. They could also lead to snap presidential elections.

Opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk said the move was being blocked by President Yanukovych, saying his party members "show no desire whatsoever to end the political crisis".

MPs who support the president say the proposals have not been thoroughly discussed, and that more time is needed.

The speaker of parliament, Volodymyr Rybak, said parliament would not meet on Wednesday, but that opposition leaders would meet the president for further talks.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Paleo Ministry of Finance $16m behind at the pumps.
[Jewish Press] Arab gas stations in Judea and Samaria have refused to fill tanks of Palestinian Authority security vehicles because of six months of unpaid bills, according to the Bethlehem-based Ma'an News Agency.

The accumulated bill for unpaid fuel now stands at nearly $16 million, according to an official of the
AFLPLO
Union of Gas Station Owners
and Operators.
The union said the Palestinian Authority Finance Ministry has ignored a warning of two weeks ago that gas stations would stop pumping gas for security vehicles as of this past Saturday.
Warm up your leather Cadillacs, it's foot patrol time.
However, the regime in Ramallah continues to pay terrorists their monthly "salaries" for being arrested for terror and serving time in Israelis jails.
Taking their fiscal lead from the regime in Washington I see.
And the European Union, some of whose member countries are suffering bloated debts and near-bankrupt economies, continues to pay the Palestinian Authority, despites its priorities.
Insert recent Victoria Nuland EU statement here.

Shimon Peres meets with Congressional Black Caucus delegation
[Jerusalem Post] President commends Obama and Kerry for their "incredible" commitment to Israel, moral reasons for being involved in Middle East today.

In the course of a meeting that he had at his official residence on Tuesday with a Congressional Black Caucus delegation headed by Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio-11), President Shimon Peres was lavish in his praise for both President Barack Obama and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

"When it comes to defending our land no request that Israel put to President Obama for the maintaining of our security was refused," Peres emphasized, adding that Israel was lucky in its relations with America which he said is not a pragmatic country. Had it been pragmatic it would not have supported Israel, nor would it be fighting on behalf of other countries, he said.

Strange Dark Streaks on Mars Get More and More Mysterious
[WIRED] There is a deep and watery mystery on Mars. Whether or not the Red Planet ever had water on it has long been solved. Plenty of evidence exists for ancient water flows and Mars still contains frozen ice at its poles. But a more tantalizing puzzle remains: Does liquid water still flow on the Martian surface?
Of course it does, in the canals.
Since 2011, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been taking pictures of mysterious dark features that appear during warm seasons, flow downhill, and then vanish as the weather grows colder. Known as "recurring slope lineae" these odd streaks have become one of the hottest topics in Martian research. While its been years since their discovery, the features just keep growing more mysterious. Just recently, scientists determined that the flows contain iron-bearing minerals, though what this means is still a head-scratcher. Above, you can see some of the best images and gifs of these features (Open the gallery to fullscreen for the best view).

Viking orbiter observations in the 1970s first recorded dark material that would spontaneously appear on dust-covered slopes on Mars. Scientists long ago concluded that these features were caused by tiny avalanches cascading down crater walls and other steep terrain. But in 2011, MRO captured images of something completely new and different. Thin finger-like streaks appeared in equatorial regions on Mars, traveling hundreds of meters and branching out like tiny rivers. Unlike the previously recorded dark slope material, which appeared at any time during the Martian year, these new features were only seen at the warmest periods on Mars, late spring and summer, and subsequently disappeared in the winter. The new features were also only a few meters across, whereas the previous dark slopes lines were generally 20 to 200 meters across.

Scientists at NASA suggested that these new features were coming from frozen water in the soil that was heating up and flowing downhill. Though the temperatures on the slopes remained below water's freezing point, the addition of brines could lower the freezing point enough to turn the water liquid. Essentially, they were saying that Mars was weeping salty tears. But when researchers used MRO's spectrometer, they found no evidence for water in the features.

Government
Food Prices Skyrocketing Since 2011 While Wages Stagnant
[BREITBART] CBS News reports that the combination of food prices being inflated and the stagnation of wages is threatening the middle class.
"Stagflation" returns.
The report noted that staples such as chicken, ground beef, and bacon have skyrocketed in price since 2011: the price of chicken is 18.4% more than it was; ground beef is up 16.8%; and bacon saw a huge increase of 22.8% in price. These price hikes came despite the federal government's sunny assertion that prices in general have only increased 6.4% in that period.

Meanwhile, median income has only risen 1% each year, while the cost of college tuition has climbed 6% to 8% every year for at least forty years.

ConvergEx market strategist Nick Colas commented, "Food inflation is far greater than the government thinks it is. The disconnect is severe, because it's the economists that make policy but it's the people who have to live with the outcome of that policy and that disconnect is growing to the point where I think it has to break soon."
