Fred Phelps Sr, ex-pastor of Westboro church, 'close to death'
Fred Phelps Sr, once pastor of the infamously intolerant Westboro Baptist Church, is close to death, according to his son.
God's striking him dead, eh?
Nathan Phelps, who has been estranged from his father for 30 years, posted a statement on Facebook which said: "I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps Sr, pastor of the 'God Hates Fags' Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the 'church' back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas.

"I'm not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.

"I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I'm bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their goodbyes."
The Guardian quotes the good reverend's estranged son as claiming dad was excommunicated from his church last August. Interesting, if true.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela bids for US 'peace meeting'
[Dhaka Tribune] Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has urged the United States to hold dialogues on "peace and illusory sovereignty" in a high level commission mediated by the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), reported BBC Online.

Maduro has also asked President B.O. not to heed US factions that allegedly want to kill the Venezuelan supremo.

Venezuela blames the United States for the anti-government protests that left 28 people dead in the last month.

The US says Venezuela is using it as a scapegoat for its internal problems.

Earlier, thousands of government supporters marched through the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, to thank the country's security forces for their policing of the recent unrest.

Maduro and several military leaders held speeches praising the "civic-military" partnership.

He also proposed the creation of a "high-level commission" to discuss "peace and respect to the illusory sovereignty" in Venezuela.

The Venezuelan president said he wanted the head of the National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, to negotiate with a "high-level officer" of the US administration under the auspices of Unasur.

"President B.O.: give peace, and respect, a chance and let's set the foundation for a new type of relations between the US, Venezuela and if possible, Latin America and the Caribbean," he told the crowd in a speech broadcast on radio and TV.

Maduro also warned Mr Obama against agreeing to alleged plans to kill him, put forward by "extremists" in the US administration.

"It would be the worst mistake in your life to authorise the liquidation of President Nicolas Maduro and fill [Venezuela] with violence," he told the crowd, adding he was a "humble president and bus driver" who like Mr Obama also had "African grandparents".

China-Japan-Koreas
N. Korea Fires 18 Rockets into Sea
[An Nahar] North Korea Sunday test-fired 18 rockets into the sea, South Korea's defence ministry said, the latest in a series of launches that have provoked criticism from Seoul and Washington.

The rockets were fired off the North's east coast and flew about 70 kilometres (42 miles) over the Sea of Japan (East Sea), a ministry front man said.

The ministry said 10 rockets were fired at 6:20 pm (0920 GMT), and eight more at 8.03 pm.

Seoul's military "has maintained a close watch for possible North Korean provocations", the front man said.

Yonhap news agency earlier reported that 10 short-range missiles were fired.

South Korean troops have increased vigilance following a series of rocket or missile launches in late February and this month.

The activity coincides with annual South Korean-U.S. military exercises that started in February and will run until mid-April.

Pyongyang routinely condemns such war games as rehearsals for an invasion, while Seoul and Washington say they are purely defensive.

"We urge North Korea to stop provocative activities that will heighten military tension across the border," the front man said.

The North has defended its missile and rocket tests as justifiable self-defence drills.

South Korea has called the launches a "reckless provocation" while Washington urged Pyongyang to halt the tests immediately, saying they risked inflaming regional tensions.

Sunday's rocket launch came two days after the North's National Defence Commission threatened to demonstrate its nuclear deterrence.

Analysts said the comments could indicate the regime is preparing to carry out a fourth atomic test.

"Additional measures will be taken to demonstrate its might one after another as long as the U.S. nuclear threat and blackmail persist as now", the commission said in a statement.

"The U.S. had better roll back its worn-out hostile policy towards (North Korea) as soon as possible and shape a new realistic policy before it is too late."

Europe
Tymoshenko Urges Hard Western Line against Russia
[An Nahar] Ukraine's former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, urged Western powers Sunday to unite on a hard line against Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. in the Crimea crisis.

"This aggressive striving for power with regard to Ukraine represents not only a danger for the Ukrainian state -- other parts of eastern Europe are also in danger," she told German daily Der Tagesspiegel.

"Should Putin continue his attack on our country after the annexation of Crimea, I would call on the leaders of the democratic world to use the strongest measures to stop this aggressor."

She said the West should under no circumstances accept the result of Sunday's referendum in Crimea on breaking away from Ukraine to join Russia.

"It is without precedent in recent history and such methods used by Russia in Crimea were no longer considered possible by many in the West," she said.

Sevastopol Toasts End of Ukraine 'Occupation' after Crimea Vote
[An Nahar] Russian flags were flying high in the historic naval city of Sevastopol Sunday as people looked forward to rejoining what many see as their homeland after a crunch referendum on Crimea's future.

Several thousand people -- many waving the white, blue and red Russian standard or holding flowers -- gathered for a celebratory concert in the city's Nakhimov Square, named after one of Russia's most illustrious admirals.

Shortly after polling closed, exit polls confirmed what spectators never doubted and showed that 93 percent of voters favored joining Russia and breaking away from Ukraine.

"We're free of the occupation," shouted Lucia Prokorovna, 60, carrying a giant Russian flag.

"Ukraine was attached to Crimea like a sack of potatoes. Today I visited the polling station -- I only slept half the night hoping for the moment we would be with Russia."

Russian rock band Lubeh, known for their patriotic songs, were at the event, drawing a young crowd who cheered as lead singer Igor Matvienko shouted "HurrahSevastopol!" and "Success for you!" between songs.

Putin Tells Obama Crimea Vote Fully Legal
[An Nahar] Russian President Vladimir Putin

Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
on Sunday told U.S. President Barack Obama
I inhaled. That was the point...
in telephone talks that the referendum on the Ukrainian region of Crimea joining Russia was "completely in line with the norms of international law," the Kremlin said.

Putin also told the U.S. president that any Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) monitoring mission in Ukraine should cover "all Ukrainian regions" and not just Crimea.

But the two leaders also agreed that "despite the differences..., it is necessary to jointly search for ways of stabilizing the situation in Ukraine," the Kremlin added.

An overwhelming 95.5 percent of Crimeans voted Sunday to become part of Russia in a referendum deemed illegal by the new authorities in Ukraine and most of the international community, exit polls showed.

With 50 percent of ballots counted, referendum commission chairman Mykhaylo Malyshev said 3.5 percent had voted to remain in Ukraine with wider autonomous powers and 1.0 percent were "spoiled ballots."

"This referendum is contrary to Ukraine's constitution, and the international community will not recognize the results of a poll administered under threats of violence and intimidation from a Russian military intervention that violates international law," White House front man Jay Carney said.

I'm sure many in the EU see this and are starting to fear it and having an outside broker like Russia actively dismembering a nation might give hope and funny ideas to some of the little splitters.

Vladimir Putin on Monday night recognised Crimea as an independent state in defiance of sanctions imposed just hours earlier on senior Russian officials by the US and EU.

95.5% of Crimeans Vote to Join Russia, U.S. and UK Slam Referendum as Illegitimate
[An Nahar] An overwhelming 95.5 percent of Crimeans voted Sunday to become part of Russia in a referendum deemed illegal by the new authorities in Ukraine and most of the international community, exit polls showed.

With 50 percent of ballots counted, referendum commission chairman Mykhaylo Malyshev said 3.5 percent had voted to remain in Ukraine with wider autonomous powers and 1.0 percent were "spoiled ballots."

Crimea's pro-Moscow leader Sergiy Aksyonov said the referendum "will go down in history."

"Today we took a very important decision that will go down in history," Aksyonov tweeted after in the wake of the exit poll.

He said Crimea's regional government will make a formal application Monday to join the Russian Federation.

"The Supreme Soviet of Crimea will make an official application for the republic to join the Russian Federation at a meeting on March 17," Aksyonov said in a tweet.

The United States strongly rejected the vote and called Russian actions in the crisis "dangerous and destabilizing."

"This referendum is contrary to Ukraine's constitution, and the international community will not recognize the results of a poll administered under threats of violence and intimidation from a Russian military intervention that violates international law," White House front man Jay Carney said.

"The United States has steadfastly supported the independence, illusory sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine since it declared its independence in 1991, and we reject the 'referendum' that took place today in the Crimean region of Ukraine," Carney said.

Carney said Russia had spurned outreach to Ukraine and calls for international monitoring, instead escalating its military intervention into Crimea and initiating military exercises on Ukraine's eastern border.

"Russia's actions are dangerous and destabilizing," the White House front man said.

"As the United States and our allies have made clear, military intervention and violation of international law will bring increasing costs for Russia -- not only due to measures imposed by the United States and our allies but also as a direct result of Russia's own destabilizing actions," he said.

The White House condemnation followed further talks between U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov earlier Sunday.

In a phone call with Lavrov, Kerry urged Moscow to pull back Russian forces to their bases in Crimea in exchange for constitutional reforms to protect minority rights.

A senior State Department official said Kerry "made clear that this crisis can only be resolved politically and that as Ukrainians take the necessary political measures going forward, Russia must reciprocate by pulling forces back to base, and addressing the tensions and concerns about military engagement."

Kerry also raised concerns about Russian military activity in Kherson Oblast, the Ukrainian province just north of Crimea, and "continuing provocations" in the eastern cities in Ukraine, the official said.

Kerry's overture appeared to receive a positive echo in Moscow, where the foreign ministry said Lavrov and Kerry agreed to look for ways to defuse the crisis through "the launch as soon as possible of a constitutional reform with the support of the international community."

For its part, Britannia slammed the vote as a "mockery" of democracy and refused to recognize the referendum's outcome.

Speaking in Brussels ahead of a meeting of European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
foreign ministers on Monday, Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned the vote as being in breach of the Ukrainian constitution.

"Nothing in the way that the referendum has been conducted should convince anyone that it is a legitimate exercise," he said in a Foreign Office statement.

"It is a mockery of proper democratic practice.

"The UK does not recognize the referendum or its outcome, in common with the majority of the international community," he added.

He called on his EU colleagues to push for measures "that send a strong signal to Russia that this challenge to the illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia will bring economic and political consequences."

#6  So based on the precedent Tovarisch Putin has set, we should call for Chechneya and other ethnic accretions to the Rodina to hold elections to declare their annexation to the nearest appropriate polity. And since China saw fit to abstain on the UN vote, a sucession vote in Tibet would be most tickey-boo.

#9  Russian Deputy PM Laughs at Obama’s Sanctions

Russia’s deputy prime minister laughed off President Obama’s sanction against him today asking “Comrade @BarackObama” if “some prankster” came up with the list.

The Obama administration hit 11 Russian and Ukrainian officials with sanctions today as punishment for Russia’s support of Crimea’s referendum. Among them: aides to President Vladimir Putin, a top government official, senior lawmakers, Crimean officials, the ousted president of Ukraine, and a Ukrainian politician and businessman allegedly tied to violence against protesters in Kiev.

EU Calls Crimea Referendum 'Illegal', Plans New Sanctions on Moscow
[An Nahar] Crimea's referendum on joining Russia is "illegal and illegitimate", the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
said Sunday, announcing that it would decide on sanctions on Monday.

"The referendum is illegal and illegitimate and its outcome will not be recognized," the European Council and European Commission presidents said in a joint statement.

EU foreign ministers meeting from 0830 GMT on Monday "will evaluate the situation tomorrow in Brussels and decide on additional measures" against Moscow, Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso said.

Crimeans voted Sunday in the referendum on joining Kremlin rule amid intense Western pressure on Moscow not to annex the region in the worst East-West standoff since the Cold War.

Both Washington and Brussels have imposed initial sanctions and warned they will take much more serious steps, up to full economic measures, if the vote went ahead.

Ukraine Mobilizes Troops To Oppose Russian Forces At Gas Facility
Ukrainian troops have been mobilized to oppose a Russian armed force attacking a gas facility in Ukraine's mainland, north of Crimea. The armed force consists of 80 Russian troops, backed by four helicopter gunships and armored vehicles. This comes amidst reports that the Russian military is moving surface to air missiles into Crimea.

Ukraine supplies almost all of the fresh water, electricity, gas and food that Crimea consumes, and so this may be only the first of several Russian invasions of the Ukraine mainland to secure Ukrainian facilities that supply these things.

Year's first polio case in Sindh detected
[DAWN] The first polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
case of the year in Sindh has been confirmed in a two-year-old girl of a Pakhtun family that had migrated to Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
eight months ago, officials said on Saturday.

The provincial health department received a report from the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, only a day ago that confirmed the virus in a 24-month-old girl who had received polio boosters in special campaigns, the officials added.

Muzaifa, daughter of Mohammad Sarwar, is a resident of Ittehad Colony, Baldia Town, which has already been categorised among the 'most sensitive' neighbourhoods by the government vis-à-vis polio immunisation.

The officials said the family had migrated eight months ago to Karachi from the country's troubled northwest which recorded close to 100 polio cases since January 2013.

"We had sent her stool samples to the NIH last month and received its report on Friday, confirming the poliovirus attack," said a senior health official.

Since January last year, the girl is the ninth victim from Karachi and third from its least covered Baldia neighbourhood, which, together with Gadap town, has been resisting polio vaccination drives.

Muzaffargarh rape case: policeman arrested, three others flee
[DAWN] Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif has ordered the police to register case against police officials accused of negligence in the Muzaffargarh rape case under section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act here in Muzaffargarh district.

Sources said the case was registered in PS Bet Mir Hazar against DSP Jatoi Sadar Circle Chaudhry Asghar, SHO Bet Mir Hazar Shahid Hussain, Ex-SHO Mohammad Idrees and Investigation Officer/Sub-Inspector Zulfiqar Ali under section 7ATA, police order 155c, 201, 322PPC.

However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
the police was able to arrest only Sub-Inspector Zulfiqar Ali while the other accused fled from the spot.

The coppers are accused of favoring the alleged rapists of a college student, who did away with himself on Thursday in protest in front of Bet Mir Hazar cop shoppe and later succumbed to her burn injuries on Friday.

The alleged main rapist Nadir was produced before local magistrate by police on Sunday. He was sent on a physical remand for three days.

On Saturday, CM Punjab visited the victim's family and assured them of justice.

New Thai Red Shirts Leader Warns of Battle Ahead
[An Nahar] A firebrand
...firebrands are noted more for audio volume and the quantity of spittle generated than for any actual logic in their arguments...
hardliner who was a core leader of Thailand's Red Shirts in the country's massive 2010 protests has been chosen to head the pro-government movement, saying Sunday that a "big fight" lay ahead.

Former MP Jatuporn Prompan, facing terrorism charges in an ongoing trial related to the 2010 uprising, told Agence La Belle France Presse that any new Red Shirt tactics would be "peaceful".

"We have to discuss our strategy," Jatuporn told AFP on Sunday. "The next battle will be big."

He ruled out violence, saying that any new strategy would involve "no weapons".

Jatuporn took the helm as chairman from previous Red Shirt leader Tida Tawornseth at a gathering of 10,000 supporters in Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, on Saturday.

Bangkok has been rocked by months of mass protests calling for Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step aside in favor of an unelected "people's council" to tackle what opponents see as a culture of money-driven politics.

The backdrop is a longstanding struggle between a royalist establishment, backed by the judiciary and the military, and Yingluck's billionaire family which has strong support in the northern half of Thailand.

Protests accuse Yingluck's elder brother Thaksin Shinawatra -- a tycoon-turned-premier who was ousted from office by royalist generals in 2006 -- of running the government from overseas, where he lives to avoid a jail term for corruption.

#1  Remember, boys and girls: Bill Clinton's fictitious "recollections" of "black churches being burned" when "he was a kid" is political pure gold. This Hindu temple stuff is just "quaint cultural customs." Nothing To See Here...

#2  Hmm that reminds me back in the '90s the media was all-a-twitter about the number of 'black churches' being burned down and about how 'racist' it was.

They never mentioned that non-black churches were also being burned down (and in in greater numbers).

Didn't fit the narrative I guess.
