Houston Black Panthers Promises Response To Police Shootings in Hearne, TX
[Breitbart] Police in Hearne, Texas shot a 93-year-old woman, yesterday (May 6th) after responding to a call about a female with a gun. The woman, identified by KBTX-TV as Pearlie Golden was allegedly carrying a firearm and was ultimately shot by Hearne Police Officer Stephen Stem.

According to a KAGS-TV report, the Robertson County District Attorney, Coty Siegert said in a statement, "Hearne Police Officers responded to a call Tuesday evening regarding a lady brandishing a firearm. Upon reaching the scene, Officer Stephen Stem located Miss Pearlie Golden, a 93 year old Hearne Resident, and confirmed that she did have a firearm. Officer Stem engaged the elderly female asking her to put down the weapon and then ultimately firing his own sidearm wounding Miss Golden who later died at St Joseph's Hospital."

The case is being investigated by the Hearne Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and the Robertson County District Attorney. Breitbart Texas reached out to District Attorney Siegert for comment. No response has been received at this time.

In his press statement, Siegert said, "Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to a Grand Jury. While it is too early in the investigation to comment on any of the facts or evidence stated above, I can say that this was a very tragic occurrence and my prayers go out to the family members of Miss Golden and to the Hearne Community as a whole."

This is the second officer-involved shooting Officer Stem has been involved in during his two-year career with the Hearne PD, according to the Bryan-College Station Eagle. Stem has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The prior shooting occurred on the last day of 2012 when Officer Stem was involved in the fatal shooting of Tederalle Satchell. According to The Eagle's report, Stem was responding to another call of a person with a gun. He was later cleared in the shooting and returned to duty. At the time, Mayor Ruben Gomez said "We are glad to have Officer Stem back on patrol. We are also glad that the Grand Jury and the DA's office saw fit to release him back to our care."

Stem is a white officer and both of the suspects involved in his shooting incidents were black. Houston Black Panther leader Quanell X is planning a protest in Hearne, Texas tomorrow to respond to these shootings.

A recent march in deep East Texas by the Houston Black Panthers. A combination of a few white supremacists as well as the common trigger happy cop is causing things to simmer. The march in this picture was the Houston Panthers response to a recent murder of black man in Jasper, the same area that another black man was dragged 3 miles by white supremacist scum bags several years ago.

#3  42 years ago I wrote a paper for my Poli. Sci. seminar on the question of the Black Panthers and guns.

Though I had personally "met" two of their big wigs, Mark Clark & Fred Hampton, several years before when I was going to school in Peoria and they had scared the crap out of me, I believed that they had the right to be armed for self defense.

I'm not crazy about the armed march but I certainly understand the motivation.

Saudi Hospital Head Sacked as MERS Death Toll Hits 117
[An Nahar] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's acting health minister has announced the sacking of the head of a Jeddah hospital where a spike in MERS infections among medical staff sparked panic among the public.

And as two more deaths were announced from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, which some researchers think may originate in camels, Adel Fakieh also announced an awareness campaign to help stop the disease's spread.

The campaign urges people not only to follow strict measures of hygiene, but specifically to avoid sick camels and refrain from eating raw camel meat or drinking unboiled camel milk.

Fakieh had already made such a recommendation last week.

In contrast, the campaign says cooked meat and boiled milk from camels are harmless.

Fakieh said on Twitter late Tuesday that he had sacked the head of King Fahd Hospital, the largest in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, after inspecting the emergency room there.

The Jeddah hospital was temporarily shut last month after several medics were infected by MERS.

And panic there prompted at least four doctors to resign in mid-April after they refused to treat MERS patients for fear of infection.

Nearly a week later, Riyadh dismissed the health minister and appointed Fakieh, who is labor minister, to take over the health portfolio on an acting basis.

Fakieh, who has repeatedly promised "transparency" over MERS, said he has replaced the head of the hospital and his assistants.

"The new team will immediately take up its duties," he tweeted, adding that "the ministry will take all decisive measures to achieve its goals in preserving the health of members of society."

On Wednesday, health officials announced two more deaths from MERS, bringing the toll to 117.

Bandicoots, Quolls in Sudden Decline
[An Nahar] Small, furry marsupials such as the bandicoot, quoll and tree possums are in dramatic decline in Australia's north and feral cats could be the cause, according to analysis reported Wednesday.

Chris Johnson, a wildlife conservation professor from the University of Tasmania, said small mammal species were at risk of extinction across the continent, but the changes in the north were marked.

"There's a pretty clear picture and it shows that lots of species have declined dramatically," Johnson told AFP.

"Where we can infer the timing of decline, it's been fairly recent and there are now large areas where small mammals are either very rare or don't exist but the habitat looks like it should support small mammals."

Johnson said while scientists discussed the changes as a "new wave of decline" it was not clear how sudden it was except that it became very noticeable in the early 1990s, particularly in places such as Kakadu National Park, a conservation area in the Northern Territory.

About 20 small native mammals have disappeared from Kakadu in recent decades including rat-like bandicoots, northern quolls, tree possums, and the weasel-like phascogale, he said, adding that similar declines had occurred elsewhere.

#2  From Zenobia's link:

The brush-tailed phascogale (Phascogale tapoatafa), also known by its Australian native name tuan,[3] the common wambenger or the black-tailed phascogale, is a rat-sized arboreal carnivorous marsupial of the family Dasyuridae, characterized by a tuft of black silky hairs on the terminal portion of its tail. Males of this species do not live past the age of one, as they die after reproducing.

That last bit lends the line an unbearable piquancy... or a sardonic snort, depending on the reader's bent.

Britain
Study: British Voters to Stick with UKIP at 2015 Election
[An Nahar] The recent surge of support for UK Independence Party will last beyond this month's European elections and carry over into next year's general election, research published on Wednesday suggests.

Nigel Farage's anti-immigration and anti-EU party is riding high in opinion polls ahead of the European elections on May 22.

Britannia's mainstream parties have in the past been able to take comfort from the fact that while UKIP scores well in European elections, it traditionally fades in general elections.

Patton Boggs settles with Chevron for $15 million
The wall starts tumbling down. Sad news about a powerful lobbying firm beset with strife.
Chevron and Patton Boggs have settled disputes linked to long-running litigation over toxic drilling waste pits in Ecuador, with Patton Boggs agreeing to pay Chevron $15 million, issue a statement of regret and withdraw from the Ecuador case. Chevron agreed to release all claims against Patton Boggs and its partners.

The settlement is a stunning and highly unusual setback for any law firm, let alone the nation's leading lobbying firm, long a bedrock of the Washington establishment. While the payment will cover only a tiny portion of the money Chevron has spent on the legal battle, the settlement overall tarnishes the reputation of Patton Boggs.

Yet the settlement, which a senior official at the firm said would be entirely covered by Patton Boggs's insurance policy, also removes a threat to the health of the firm. Patton Boggs had already been struggling with financial pressures common to the legal industry and has recently been exploring possible mergers in a bid to restore its stability.
The real problem with the settlement is that all the information that Patton Boggs could have been forced to disclose in depositions, interrogatories and in court is now sealed. $15 million is cheap compared to the hit they would have taken if all that bad news had come out.

#3  Ask and ye shall receive, LG:

Section 5(b) of the Settlement Agreement: "Within a reasonable time after the execution of this Agreement, Chevron shall serve document requests of which the subject matter will be litigation and enforcement funding, the identification of legal representatives associated with litigation and enforcement, international enforcement efforts, and documents previously produced by Patton Boggs in redacted form in the RICO Litigation or any other Chevron-related litigation or proceeding. Patton Boggs shall produce documents responsive to the document requests in a timely manner, provided that Patton Boggs shall not be required to produce documents it has previously produced to Chevron, whether in the RICO Litigation or any other litigation or proceeding, unless previously produced in redacted form. If material in such documents was redacted due any privilege or work product protection, Chevron may seek a determination from this Court concerning privilege or work product protection, and Patton Boggs will produce unredacted versions of such documents if so ordered by this Court."

Pakistan struggles to cope with aftermath of WHO polio curbs
[DAWN] Pakistain is still reeling from the fallout of the travel restrictions imposed on it by the World Health Organisation to prevent the spread of polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. The Ministry of National Health Services is expected to hold a meeting on Wednesday with representatives of provincial governments and other stakeholders to discuss the developments following the imposition of WHO restrictions.

The ministry is also likely to hold a presser to inform the public about the steps being taken by it.

On Tuesday, four women politicians moved a call-attention notice in the National Assembly. Minister for National Health Services, Saira Afzal Tarar, informed the house that the government was developing a strategy to combat the virus. She said provincial health ministers were being taken on board and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

Mr Sharif had met the head of the WHO to discuss the issue, she added.

"Religious scholars are also getting involved with the campaign and the Imaam-e-Kaaba was expected to visit Pakistain soon to augment the government's efforts," she said.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli Gas Field May Supply Egypt
[Ynet] Noble Energy signs deal to supply liquefied gas to Egyptian gas facility, which would see 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas transferred of 15 years.

The operator of a natural gas field off Israel's coast says it has signed a letter of intent to provide gas to a facility in Egypt.
Clearly the universe exists independent of my mind, 'cause my mind never would have invented this.
Houston-based Noble Energy Inc. said Monday it reached a preliminary deal to sell gas to Union Fenosa Gas SA for its liquefied natural gas facility in Egypt.

The deal calls for providing up to 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas over 15 years. It said the sides hoped to reach a final agreement within six months. It would then need regulatory approval in Israel and Egypt.

Until recently, Egypt provided natural gas to Israel.
Until recently, Egypt provided natural gas to Israel. But following the ouster of longtime President Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
in 2011, supplies were disrupted and eventually halted.

Noble Energy executive Keith Elliott called the deal a "major milestone."

Israel's Tamar natural gas field was discovered in the eastern Mediterranean in 2009 and holds an estimated 10 tcf of gas. The larger Leviathan field was discovered nearby a year later and turned Israel into a potential energy exporter.

UFG has an 80 percent stake in an LNG facility in Damietta and has been having production trouble since the Egyptian government began keeping its own natural gas for domestic use rather than sending it to the plant for export.

Texas-based Noble Energy, which has a 36 percent stake in Tamar, said both sides hope to finalise a binding agreement within six months, though any deal will require regulatory approvals in Israel and Egypt.

A source close to the Israeli partners said if a final deal is concluded the gas would be sent through a new subsea pipeline which would have to be built.

Egypt, facing its worst energy crunch in years, is scrambling to secure adequate fuel supplies to avoid popular anger over power cuts.
This is one way to give Israel a vote over Egyptian behaviour, while sucking up Saudi money...
The Israeli partners in Tamar said the price of the gas to be sold to UFG will be similar to the price in other export deals from Israel and based mainly on a linkage to Brent oil prices.

Isramco Negev has a 28.75 percent share of Tamar, Delek Drilling and Avner Oil both have 15.625 percent. Dor Gas Exploration holds the remaining 4 percent.

Southeast Asia
Thai court asks PM to step down
[The Peninsula] A Thai court ordered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down yesterday after finding her guilty of abusing her power, prolonging a political crisis that has led to violent protests and brought the economy close to recession.

The decision is bound to anger supporters of Yingluck, but the court did allow ministers not implicated in the case against her to stay in office, a decision that could take some of the sting out of any backlash on the streets.

Thailand's protracted political crisis broadly pits Bangkok's middle class and royalist establishment against mainly poor, rural supporters of Yingluck and Thaksin, who lives in exile to avoid a 2008 jail sentence for abuse of power.

Yingluck, who faced six months of sometimes deadly protests in the capital, Bangkok, aimed at toppling her government and ending the considerable political influence of her brother, thanked the Thai people in a televised news conference. "Throughout my time as prime minister I have given my all to my work for the benefit of my countrymen.

I have never committed any unlawful acts as I have been accused of doing," Yingluck said, smiling and outwardly upbeat. "From now on, no matter what situation I am in, I will walk on the path of democracy. I am sad that I will not be able to serve you after this."

231-187 House Holds Lerner in Contempt of Congress
[FoxNews] The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify about the agency's targeting of conservative groups.

The House voted 231-187 for a resolution holding Lerner in contempt. All the Republicans voted yes, along with six Democrats.

Lerner's case will now be sent to the Justice Department, which then must decide whether to essentially prosecute Lerner in the case.

Minutes after the Lerner vote, the House passed a resolution asking the Department of Justice to appoint a special counsel to probe the IRS by a vote of 250-168.

House Speaker John Boehner issued a statement following the vote saying, "It's time for Lois Lerner to account for her actions, and if she won't then the full force of the law should be brought to bear."

On the Democratic side, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., accused House Republicans of taking "a significant step backwards in their duty to uphold the U.S. Constitution by voting to strip an American citizen of her Fifth Amendment rights."

House GOP leaders have said Lerner's testimony is important to fully investigate the scandal, in which IRS agents singled out Tea Party nonprofit applications for extra scrutiny.

"Thorough investigations by the Oversight and Government Reform Committee as well as the Ways and Means Committee have revealed findings that indicate that Ms. Lerner played a central role in the illegal targeting of conservative groups by the IRS," House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said in a memo last month.

Last May, Lerner refused to answer questions at a hearing about IRS agents singling out Tea Party applications. She again refused to answer questions in March, citing her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

The House Oversight Committee voted to hold Lerner in contempt last month. All Republicans voted in favor and all Democrats voted against.

Following Wednesday night's vote, the matter now goes to Ronald Machen, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. Federal law says Machen has a "duty" to bring the matter before a grand jury. But a report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service said it was unclear whether the duty is mandatory or discretionary. Machen was appointed to his job by President Barack Obama.

"We will carefully review the report from the speaker of the House and take whatever action is appropriate," Machen's office said in a statement.

Lerner directed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. She retired from the IRS last fall, ending a 34-year career in the federal government, including work at the Justice Department and Federal Election Commission.

Sing it high, sing it low,

Now the Wicked Wizard (Her Boss, Obama) is next too.

#2  I'll believe it when I see her brought before congress in chains and imprisoned.

Everything else is theatrics.

#3  Pelosi misses Lerner vote for fundraiser.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) did not attend the Wednesday evening vote series to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt for refusing to testify about the agency’s improper scrutiny of Tea Party groups.

She was, however, at a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fundraiser attended by the president and roughly 90 guests at the home of Disney Chairman Alan Horn in Bel Air, Calif., according to a White House pool report.

She also did not vote on the resolution to call on the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel in the IRS investigation. Moreover, Pelosi did not vote in the mid-afternoon vote series on Wednesday either.

Pelosi's office did not comment.

#5  Send the House SWAT team to pick her up. Everyone else seems to have one, why not the House Sergeant at Arms?

Snark of the day.

#6  "Lerner's case will now be sent to the Justice Department, which then must decide whether to essentially prosecute Lerner in the case."

Any takers on odds of prosecution?...
