France: Gunmen Ambush Saudi Prince's Motorcade
Armed robbers ambushed the motorcade of a Saudi prince in France, stealing a car and a large sum of money, French authorities told ABC News.

The ambush happened at 9 p.m. local time Sunday while the prince, who has not been named, was traveling in a three-vehicle motorcade to Paris--Le Bourget Airport...The third car contained a driver and 250,000 euros -- more than $330,000 in U.S. money -- along with Saudi embassy documents.
Wille Sutton robbed banks because...
The gunmen attacked only the third car, authorities said, taking the money, documents and the driver, who was later released. One of the BMWs used in the heist was later found carbecued burned, officials said.

The site of the incident, Porte de la Chapelle, is one of the few places in Paris not covered by surveillance cameras, which police believe the thieves knew.
And now we, the general public, know also.

Autopsy: Michael Brown shot at least 6 times
Michael Brown was shot at least six times, according to the preliminary results of a private autopsy that his family requested.

The independent autopsy was conducted by high-profile pathologist Michael Baden. Baden testified in the O.J. Simpson, Phil Spector and Drew Peterson murder trials.

However, the New York Times, reporting on the same independent autopsy, reported that two of the bullets struck Brown in the head. The other four struck him in the right arm -- and all six were fired into his front.

"This is bound to escalate tensions," the Rev. Jesse Jackson told CNN. "This is a very provocative report."

#1  He stressed that his examination was not to determine whether the shooting was justified.

“In my capacity as the forensic examiner for the New York State Police, I would say, ‘You’re not supposed to shoot so many times,’ ” said Dr. Baden, who retired from the state police in 2011. “Right now there is too little information to forensically reconstruct the shooting.”

You're supposed to shoot, then check for a pulse before continuing.

#2  Some eye witness statements said Brown had turned and was "bum rushing" the cop. All 6 shots were to the front of his body. If Brown were advancing towards the cop, you have to wonder if he was on something. Cigars are used to smoke weed by some drug users. Toxicology reports might reveal whether or not Brown was on something.

#3  ...I'd want to know what was the angle on those shots.

#4  NYT autopsy report drawing indicates 4-5 of the six hits would not have been fatal. Other reports said 11 shots fired in all - as police shooting under stress situation goes, that's actually pretty good accuracy. And/or Brown was real close. I fail to see why this report should 'escalate tensions.'
Posted by: Glenmore || 08/18/2014 9:04 Comments || Top||

#5  There is a video at Drudge where one can clearly hear two witnesses discusing what happened and supporting the police version that Brown turned around and was running at the police officer. He refused to stop and was shot but kept coming.

#7  "In my capacity as the forensic examiner for the New York State Police, I would say, 'You're not supposed to shoot so many times,'

Wasn't that long ago that there was a news posting about NYC's finest emptying their guns on a suspect, not hitting the target, but hitting bystanders.

Shooting to wound is a Hollyweird concept. In most instances the events are so quick (though time shifts when the adrenaline flows), you don't usually enjoy the Hollyweird luxury of marksman like skills to select legs, arms, etc. The basic training is center mass.

#8  'You're not supposed to shoot so many times,' You shoot until the perp is not a threat. Sometimes this takes 11 shots or even more.

Depends on the caliber and/or how 'jacked up' the assailant is.

#10  I fail to see why this report should 'escalate tensions.'

Because there is a group of armchair quarterbacks who have a pre-judicial opinion of what happened and don't want to believe the alternative?

4. Prior arrests of "gentle giant's" little buddy and accomplice.

#12  Shot too many times? What a dumbassed comment from someone thats obviously never been in a life threatening situation, You shoot because there is a threat. You stop only when that threat stops. The shots to the arm apparently didn't stop the deceased, only the shot to the upper part of the head did, which is what the coroners report allegedly says was the last shot fired.

Shoot until he stops coming at you. Thats what the cop apparently did. This is not too many times - this was "just enough times" sot stop the assault. The problem is the assailant didn't stop when hit until a fatal shot was made. Cop not at fault for that - if the assailant had stopped and dropped when first hit, the fatal shot would not have been fired.

#13  Just watched the preliminary autopsy report from Dr. Michael M. Baden. The butcher board graphic he and his assistant displayed showed 4 gunshot wounds to the right arm, one above the right eye, and one to the very top of the head. The initial report indicates all shots appear to be from the front.

My unprofessional opinion is that the one above the eye was the fatal wound and possibly the last shot fired. All other shots [right arm strikes less top of head wound] might be the result of the officer's nervous jerking the trigger pull or poor sight picture.

If the above is proven to be the correct, it may [again may] indicate the perp did not stop his upright, forward movement until dropped form bullet strike above the eye.
Posted by: Besoeker || 08/18/2014 11:37 Comments || Top||

#14  Ditto to OS at #12. I will also postulate the police officer's service weapon was not a .45 caliber, Colt 1911, but rather a 9mm Glock, S&W, or Sig.
Posted by: Besoeker || 08/18/2014 11:46 Comments || Top||

#15  The kinetic effects of a massive, slow moving .45 slug(s) would have likely spun the perp around or knocked him over, as opposed to a fast moving 9mm.

#18  You shoot until the suspect is halted. The examiner has no right to come off with this unless it is a quote out of context. IE He shot too many time because of his poor aim...
Posted by: 49 Pan || 08/18/2014 12:43 Comments || Top||

#19  Here are my un-professional observations:

Note the dotted line between the eye and the clavicle, with an X at the clvicle suggesting perhaps it was the bullet's last entry poing. This suggests to me that the guy was leaning forward, perhaps to bum-rush the cop, perhaps because he was injured. The last injury, at the top of the head, seems to have been fired directly into the brain, so I believe he was leaning forward for that shot, too. I don't know if there is a connection between the upper right bicep and right pectoral area, and what the angle on his thumb means.
Posted by: gorb || 08/18/2014 12:49 Comments || Top||

#20  Wound above the eye is likely a cranial racetrack, exiting the chin and into the chest. Depending upon the angle, the round from the thumb would may have also resulted in another hit to the upper arm. Need to check the officer's magazine to see just how many rounds were fired...might not have been six.

#34  I'm not a firearms expert, but going by the diagram it looks like the officer was shooting for center of mass but the gun fired to the left. He kept pulling the trigger (not squeezing it) and the recoil of each shot forced the muzzle up and a little to the right.

Try it next time you're at the range.

I've learnt so much here. Last night we were watching the Lone Ranger film on television, and I had to walk out of the room. The house was being attacked by bad guys, the mother was shooting at them with the rifle, while the pre-teen son was hiding under the table peeking out through a hole instead of reloading for her... or manning another rifle himself.

Ferguson PD Chief sez offier was aware Brown was strong-arm robber
[Daily Caller] Ferguson, Mo. police chief Tom Jackson now says that Darren Wilson, the police officer who fatally shot Michael Brown last Saturday, realized after he stopped Brown and a friend in the street that he was responsible for a strong-arm robbery at a convenience store.

The new information, which Jackson provided to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, comes at the tail end of a day of turmoil and confusion — most of which was created by Jackson.

In his first Friday bombshell, at an early-morning press conference, Jackson first reported Wilson’s name. He also released an information packet that contained evidence that Brown had taken part in the strong-arm robbery mere minutes before he was shot.
Nothing to see here. Just a couple of defiant local youth strolling down the middle of the street with a fist full of cigars. Probably no connection to that 911 five minutes ago. Time for a cup of coffee.

Florida homeowners, child survive shootout with intruder
[FOXNEWS] JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville man and woman are in stable, pH balanced condition after a shootout with an intruder that broke into their home Friday morning. Police say the suspect, 21-year-old Trevel Yates, was killed during the assault.
"He wuz a nize boy. Dey din't needed to kill 'im!"
The pair had just woken up when they heard a loud noise of someone breaking in the back door, Sgt. Michael Paul reported. The 50-year-old man fought with Yates and was hit several times with a blunt object. The man retrieved a firearm and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. The 60-year-old woman also got a gun and shot at the suspect.
"Shirl! Grab yer rosco!"
A child in the home was unharmed.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the death and the State Attorney's Office is reviewing the case.

New, Larger Ebola Center Opens in Liberia
[NY Times] Doctors Without Borders began accepting patients on Sunday at what is intended to be the largest-ever Ebola treatment center, near Monrovia, Liberia's capital. The center is near two previous units, which have been filled beyond their intended capacity as the number of suspected Ebola patients in the capital grew greatly in recent days.

The new unit, on the grounds of the Eternal Love Winning Africa mission hospital in Paynesville City, is designed to hold 120 patients and can be expanded to accommodate more than 300. There is an urgent need for it. On Sunday, patients who might be coming down with Ebola waited outdoors on the hospital grounds as a storm battered the city with rain. Nine patients were admitted to the new unit.

#1  I suspect that centralized treatment isn't going to be good enough.

Can we develop some protocols that can be carried out in a village with only rags, mats, and bleach that would reduce the likelihood of the caretaker also dying to something "acceptable?" If the people have "ownership" of the treatment I'd think there'd be less resistance, and fewer people dying.

Of course you have to impress on them the need of a lazar-house and isolation, of relying on bleach and not salt-baths, providing the bleach (not a trivial logistical problem, but doable)--and keeping the message going all the time.

BTW it's the rainy season, with all that implies for sanitation, roads, and readily available fresh water.

Liberian Mob Destroys Ebola Center Two Days After It Opens
All the gloves the Ministry of Health brought this place when it opened yesterday, all 150 of them, were gone by the middle of the night.

That's when three people escaped. Because Sam Tarplah and his staff didn't have any gloves, they couldn't restrain the patients who wanted to flee. They could only plead.

"We begged them, told them people are coming tomorrow to help you," Tarplah said. "But there was no way we could fight them."

Tarplah is a registered nurse who's worked in health care in Liberia since 1989; he opened this holding center for the Ministry of Health on Thursday, and had eight patients. On Friday, before the escape, he had 29.

West Point is becoming a hot spot in a hot spot in the biggest Ebola outbreak in history. It's an informal community, a "slum," with no running water or toilets. People can live seven or more to a single dwelling, and the density is dangerous: A positive Ebola patient disappearing into the maze of metal shacks can be a public health horror story.

Today, things got even worse. A mob descended on the center at around 5:30 p.m., chanting, "No Ebola in West Point! No Ebola in West Point!" They stormed the front gate and pushed into the holding center. They stole the few gloves someone had donated this morning, and the chlorine sprayers used to disinfect the bodies of those who die here, all the while hollering that Ebola is a hoax.
Who'da thunk they had truthers in Liberia, too?
They ransacked the protective suits, the goggles, the masks. They destroyed part of Tarplah's car as he was fleeing the crowd.

Jemimah Kargbo, a health care worker at a clinic next door, said they took mattresses and bedding, utensils and plastic chairs.
"Everybody left with their own thing," she said. "What are they carrying to their homes? They are carrying their deaths."
She said the police showed up but the crowd intimidated them.
"The police were there but they couldn't contain them. They started threatening the police, so the police just looked at them," she said.
And then mob left with all of the patients.

"They said, 'The president says you have Ebola, but you don't have Ebola, you have malaria. Get up and go out!'" Kargbo said.

Tolbert Nyenswah, the assistant minister of health, told BuzzFeed on Thursday they intend to quarantine all of West Point, a serious measure that would require meticulous planning and heavy security. Nyenswah could not be reached for comment on today's riot or its effect on the quarantine plan.

#8  Liberia was a white man's epic fail concept from the beginning. Virtually impossible to rid yourself of cheap labor. Probably be learning a lot more about 'cheap labor' this week.

#9  "Who'd 'a thunk they had truthers...."

Thanks to Charles Taylor et al, an entire generation didn't have a chance to get even the rudimentary education available in Africa. Schools were shut down for over ten years and all the infrastructure was destroyed. Warlords forced villagers off their land, and a whole generation didn't learn how to farm, either.

The myth has spread, even among educated Africans, that AIDS and Ebola come from the West. "We didn't have big outbreaks before, so it's not native." This an example of a post-hoc fallacy; but there is one small element of truth in it. Before urbanization, a disease might wipe out an isolated village, but would then stop. With urbanization, diseases that once burned themselves out in a small area now can infect millions because of travel and crowded conditions.

#11  Really, 150 latex gloves? I have more in my workshop, and rarely work with anything I need protection from. This isn't because they're poor, this is because a bunch people are pocketing the money intended for these clinics.
Posted by: Rob Crawford || 08/18/2014 19:10 Comments || Top||

#12  I've heard nothing bad about the MSF clinics, but despite anti-corruption campaigns, I'd bet that Rob is correct and various people "ate the money" that was supposed to go to gov't clinic supplies over the years. There are dedicated people working there, but it's an uphill struggle.

The fear of killers stealing body parts for magic has always been greater than the actual incidence of it, but it has happened from time to time--allegedly sometimes with high officials involved.

And there's a bit of history with district officials, who given license to impress locals into road building projects, impressed them into working on their own farms instead.

Not trusting authorities can run pretty deep there.

I don't give up hope, though. Things used to get pretty weird in England, too.

My father is buried there, Sonny. You might say we have a few ties to the area.

Iowa Students to Wear Heart Rate Monitors
[ABCNEWS.GO] Students going back to school in Dubuque, Iowa, are going to find it a little harder to slack off in gym.

Public middle and high school students will have to wear heart rate monitors in gym class to make sure they are actually being physically active.

"It will be a large portion of their grade, because we want to grade them on what they're actually doing in our class," Dubuque Schools Athletic and Wellness Director Amy Hawkins told ABC News.

Teachers will use the information collected from the heart rate monitors to write report cards.

"It really takes the opinion out of things," Hawkins said. "You know it's not really 'I think your kid is doing this and this in class.'"

Police tell Detroiters to buy guns in city riven by race issues and crime
[THEGUARDIAN] bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit
... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang...
police chief James Craig — nicknamed "Hollywood" for his years spent in the LAPD and his seeming love of being in front of the camera — has repeatedly called on "good" and "law-abiding" Detroiters to arm themselves against criminals in the city.

His words have not fallen on deaf ears.

Patricia Champion, a 63-year-old lifelong Detroiter, a grandmother and retired educator, decided to get her concealed pistol license -- a CPL -- two years ago after her son said he was increasingly worried for her safety. Champion, a resident of northwest Detroit, mostly keeps her gun, a 9mm Glock 19 that set her back $600, in her house.

"That's why I got it: because I'm going to be in the house. Now, if somebody chooses to come in and I didn't invite you, between the Glock and the dog, you're gone. If one doesn't get you, the other one will."

"The police are not going to protect you when something is being perpetrated on you. They may turn up after the fact and run after that person, but you have to protect yourself," Champion says.

Champion's fears of facing a threat in her home are not ill-founded. Besides having the worst homicide rate among large American cities, Detroit experienced 12,935 burglaries last year. With around 250,000 households, that means Detroiters have roughly a 1 in 20 chance of being burgled. To residents who have been victims of crime, being allowed to carry a weapon, whether openly or concealed, is not just reassuring, it's part of the pragmatic reality of living in the Motor City. Wayne County, which encapsulates Detroit and its metro area, counted 83,950 active concealed-pistol permits as of 1 August 2014 — meaning one permit for every 21 households.

Arabia
Lashes for Saudi woman who called morality police liars:
[NEWS.YAHOO] A Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
n judge has upheld a sentence of a month in prison and 50 lashes for a businesswoman convicted of insulting members of the morality police during an argument, the local al-Medina newspaper reported on Sunday.

Incidents of heavy-handed behavior by the morality police have come under growing criticism on social media from inside the kingdom in recent years, straining relations between Saudi citizens and the official body.

Bangladesh
Four found dead in three districts
[Dhaka Tribune] In separate incidents, four people were found dead in Narayanganj, Khulna and Rajshahi districts yesterday.

In Narayanganj, the body of an unidentified young man, aged around 30, was found inside a sack by a road at Kashipur in Fatullah of Sadr upazila in the morning.

Akbar Hossain, sub-inspector of Fatullah Model cop shoppe, said being informed by locals, police recovered the body and sent it to Narayanganj 100-bedded General Hospital for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the hands and legs of the youth were not found in the sack.

Police suspected that miscreants killed the youth sometime at night and dumped the body there.

In another incident, the floating body of a Class IV student of Joygobinda School, Adar Chowdhury, 12, was recovered from the Buriganga River at Alirtek in Narayanganj city at noon.

Some fishermen recovered the body from the river.

In Khulna, the body of a housewife, Dipali Odhikari, 35, wife of Kalidash Odhikari, was recovered from her house at Boyra Sardarpara in the city in the morning.

Police recovered the slaughtered body of Dipali from the house after being informed by locals that bad odour was coming out from the locked house, said Maruf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sonadanga cop shoppe.

Police suspected that Dipali's husband Kalidash slaughtered her two or three days back and then fled to India.

In Rajshahi, police recovered the body of an unidentified young man from a mango orchard at Harina village in Bagha upazila in the morning.

Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bagha Police Station, said locals spotted the body of the youth, aged around 30, with his hands and legs tied with ropes in the orchard beside Tentulia-Harina road at about 11:30 am and informed police.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

Police suspected that the young man might have been strangled sometime on Saturday night.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ukrainian MiG-29 shot down near Lugansk

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

News reports from both Kiev and from pro-Russian sources say a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet was shot down over Lugansk Saturday, according to various Russian and English language Russian sources.

According to the Ukrainian government, the pilot ejected and was safely retrieved.

The MiG-29 is a multirole fighter that can be used as a ground interdiction aircraft as well as an air superiority aircraft. Since Russian nationalists in Lugansk have antiaircraft means no more advanced than man-packed missiles, it is likely the pilot was hit by gunfire before he ejected.

Ukrainian artillery units continue to pound Donetsk. According to news from the pro-Russian Voice of Sevastopol, 70 individuals have been killed in Donetsk in the last three days because of Ukrainian artillery.

Ukrainian artillery also has been hitting the Chervonogvardeysky district of Makeevka, which is a suburb of Donetsk. Artillery strikes were reported also in the Nizhnyaya Krinka, Kiev districts of Donetsk.

Krasnodon, in Lugansk oblast, about 16 kilometers northeast of Lugansk itself, an airstrike was launched against unspecified targets

By contrast, Lugansk was not hit by artillery. All was reported calm.

In Grabskoye, about 13 kilometers east of Donetsk, a Ukrainian police unit dubbed "Black Hundreds" has reportedly been destroyed by Russian nationalist units after being surrounded. A total of 130 Ukrainian police were killed in the fighting. Pro-Russian militia say the unit was using Tochka-U tactical ballistic missiles in their defense.

The moniker "Black Hundreds" refers to a ultra-nationalist pro-monarchy political movement known for pogroms against Jews and other non-Russians.

According to the Russian blogger Colonel Cassad, Ukrainian forces south of Krasnii Luch are surrounded and unable to resupply, but he did not identify the units. The situation for Ukrainian military units is that a new offensive is expected to develop to relieve those forces, taking troops from another sector, Ilovaisk to the north.

Krasnii Luch, east of Donetsk has been a severe point of contention between Ukrainian and pro-Russian forces for at least two weeks, as it is the point that the Ukrainian military has decided that Donetsk will be cut off and finally surrounded. Despite several repeated attempts, the Ukrainian military hasn't really even come close to achieving investment of the Donetsk area, and has instead apparently decided to shell the city instead.

Similarly in the area of Krasni Luch, as in other areas in the south Ukrainian military units wrecked by fighting pro-Russian nationalists are surrendering to the militias along with their heavy equipment. The problem for the militias is that due to a lack of fuel and spare parts as well as the personnel to operate vehicles, those prizes are worthless.

According to the blogger report, the only area in which the Ukrainian military maintains any "operational initiative" is in the Gorlovka area, northeast of Donetsk where the Ukrainians enjoy a superiority in armor.

In fact, a Ukrainian tank unit broke through the Zhadanoka Saturday, which is about 12 kilometers northeast of Donetsk. But as with other armor attacks, pro-Russian nationalist militias are seeking to cut off supply to those units, and then work in liquidating them over time.

Europe
Ukraine Says Army Controls Center of Luhansk
[NY Times] The Ukrainian military on Sunday moved into the heart of the separatist hub of Luhansk for the first time, officials said, chipping at one of the cornerstones of the pro-Russian rebels' disintegrating virtual state.

Ukrainian officials said army units had raised the national flag over a cop shoppe in central Luhansk, the eastern city that, along with Donetsk, has been a center of rebel activity and an important destination for Russian fighters and aid. Other parts of Luhansk, however, were still said to be under rebel control.

The claim could not be independently confirmed, though a photograph of the flag and cop shoppe was circulating on social media, and the report was consistent with the progress of fighting there going into the weekend.

Statue of slain PKK commander unveiled in southeast Turkey
[ARABNEWS] A statue of a former Death Eater commander of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) who planned the first attacks of its 30-year insurgency against the Turkish authorities has been unveiled in southeast Turkey, reports said Sunday.

The statue of Mahsum Korkmaz, who was killed in 1986, was unveiled on Saturday in the village of Yolacti in the Lice district of the majority Kurdish Diyarbakir province in Turkey's southeast.

But the hugely unusual move has infuriated nationalists who denounced it as the unwanted result of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
's policy of granting greater rights to Turkey's Kurdish minority.

The statue shows Korkmaz standing on a high triangular plinth dressed in battle gear and holding a rifle by his side, according to pictures published in Turkish media including the Milliyet daily.

It was erected in a newly opened cemetery in Yolacti for slain PKK fighters where Korkmaz is also buried, in a ceremony attended by local politicians, including a representative of the People's Democratic Party (HDP).

The unveiling coincided with the 30th anniversary of the start of the PKK's deadly campaign of violence against the Turkish authorities, which began with attacks in the southeastern towns of Eruh and Semdinli on August 15, 1984.
