Pistol whip old Bill Strudel at your own peril
[Jacksonville.com] Among the gifts Bill Strudel received after retiring as a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office sergeant 10 years ago was the police-issued handgun he used on the street, a common practice for cops who retire after years with the agency.

The present came in handy Monday night when he was attacked by an armed carjacker who left Strudel's eyes soaked in blood after pistol-whipping him in the forehead.

Strudel, deputy police chief at the University of North Florida, shot the armed 15-year-old in the buttocks during the attempt to steal Strudel's sport-utility vehicle, the Sheriff's Office said. The attack occurred about 9 p.m. in the 10600 block of Lem Turner Road while Strudel, who was off-duty and out running errands, had stopped at a free-standing ice machine to buy ice, police said.

Strudel needed numerous stitches to close his head wound, said UNF Police Chief Frank Mackesy, a long-time personal and professional friend who took Strudel to the hospital.

"He took a pretty significant blow to the head," Mackesy said of the 67-year-old. "He was definitely shaken up."

Mackesy credited Strudel's expertise as a firearms instructor with the Sheriff's Office and UNF police with helping to ensure his injuries weren't worse. Strudel joined the UNF police department in 2005 after 25 years with the Sheriff's Office.

"The suspect messed with the wrong guy," Mackesy said. "He was responding in a way he was trained to respond. If it had been anybody else out there, I don't know how this would have turned out."
Take away: Leave old men to themselves. They don't have many years left and relish the thought of exciting new story telling material for their kaffeeklatsch and 'spit & whittle club' get-togethers.

Swedish restaurant shooting leaves 2 dead, 15 injured
[THESTAR] A shooting inside a restaurant in Sweden's second largest city killed two people and left up to 15 maimed -- three or four of them seriously, police said, adding that the incident was likely gang-related.
Ja, sure! The Svedish måfiå.
Spokesman Bjor Blixter said Thursday the eatery in Goteborg was full when men with automatic weapons opened fire late Wednesday, and some of those maimed may have been ordinary guests.
"Lars Erikson sleeps widda herring!"
"Innocent people have been hit," Blixter said. He said none of the maimed was in a life-threatening condition.
"It's just business, Björn!"
The victims were two men in their 20s. Blixter said there were known gang members inside the restaurant in the suburb of Biskopsgarden, adding the shooting spree was likely related to gang feuds. The neighbourhood is known for a history of gang violence.
"It's time to go to the måttresses, Axel!"
One witness told Swedish broadcaster SVT that two men entered the restaurant and started shooting with automatic weapons.
“I'll make him an offer he can't refuse.”
"Lutefisk."
"Huh?"
"Offer him lutefisk. He likes lutefisk!"

No arrests have been made but several people have been brought in for questioning. Police were still searching for a possible getaway car.

Federal workers ordered to repair probe their €˜unconscious bias' on race, sexuality
[Wash Times] A top U.S. Forest Service executive told his employees to probe their own "unconscious bias" on everything from race and sexuality to the disabled and fat people, asking them to use an unproven assessment tool to explore their feelings.

The online test, which Forest Management Director Bryan Rice urged other agency directors to use as well, specifically warns of problems when it is taken "outside of the safeguards of a research institution." Users also are told to be careful about how far to go in interpreting the results.

Mr. Rice, in a March 11 email to his employees, also instructed them to read a New York Times piece titled "Straight talk for white men," which argues that white men benefit from unconscious bias. He also shared a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that shows managers are more likely to hire those with a "very white sounding name" over those with a "very African American sounding name."

In an email to The Washington Times, Mr. Rice said he believed the tests would help build a better workplace for his team.

"The intent of using the unconscious bias material is to assist with efforts to foster a work environment where everyone is respected and valued," he said. "The unconscious bias material can help us explore diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It was included in a discussion of diversity as part of a continuous series of collaborative discussions on a variety of topics we have on my staff that cover key Forest Service policies and values as a means of fostering continued awareness."

Mr. Rice did not respond to questions about which tests he took, nor what biases were exposed by those assessments.

#1  Let's start that conversation. MIT's study showed that managers are more likely to hire those with "very white sounding names" because those same people could be fired without repercussions. There is racism invovled here but it is not what you they think and it is government created racism.

Oil falls as dollar up, Kuwait sees OPEC output steady
[REUTERS] Oil prices tumbled on Thursday as a rebounding dollar and Kuwait's stance that OPEC had no choice but to keep producing in an oversupplied market undercut the previous day's rally.

Benchmark Brent oil settled down nearly 3 percent while U.S. crude lost almost 2 percent, weighed by the dollar's rise against most currencies.

In the previous session, Brent rose nearly 5 percent and U.S. crude about 3 percent as the dollar suffered its biggest one-day tumble in 18 months on disappointment over the lack of a clear timeline for a U.S. interest rate hike. [USD/]

Zakharcheno on Konstantinovka: We'll adequately react to this

Donetsk president Aleksandr Zakharchenko said in remarks Wednesday, that he intends to give take no prisoner orders against the Ukrainian army unit whose vehicle ran over and killed a three year old child on Monday, according to a youtube.com video.

Tuesday night riots broke out in the northern Donetsk town of Konstantinovka after an unidentified child was hit and killed by a group of Ukrainian soldiers driving an armored vehicle, identified as an MTLB. According to videos taken at the scene, the driver missed a turn, and when he attempted to correct his course, a family was struck by the vehicle, killing one child and wounding another.

That night protesters burned a car and a bus in reaction to the death.

Konstantinovka is a town about seven kilometers southwest of Artemovsk, which until the end of last month was a major logistical center for Ukrainian forces holding the Debaltsevo salient. The rebel campaign to destroyed those forces concluded only a few days ago with Ukrainian soldiers killed in action said to number into the thousands.

Zakharchenko's remarked about the failure of the Ukrainian parliament to pass a reform law which would allow Russian speaking residents in Donetsk and Lugansk to maintain a special status as an autonomous region in Ukraine, and changing Ukraine into a federation.

Zakharcheko made his reference to the incidents in Konstaninovka saying that the Minsk Ceasefire was annulled. He said that he will give orders to rebel combat units under his command not to take prisoners from the unit which caused the accident.

"We'll come there, for sure," said Zakharchenko.

Zakharchenko has been hinting of late about renewed rebel efforts in destroying more Ukrainian military units in operations similar to the battles in Debaltsevo last month and Ilovaisk last August.

Both of those battles were defensive operations by rebel forces intended to surround and eliminate Ukrainian forces by either forcing them to surrender or by liquidating those units.

Normally, surrounding forces are an offensive operation, but the operations in Ilovaisk and Debaltsevo were defensive in nature, because neither involve the usual elements in pocket battles, such as inner and outer rings for forces.

Instead, at least in Debaltsevo, rebel forces pinned down Ukrainian forces with attacks on those forces along the walls of the salient before launching a sudden attack which seized the town of Logvinovka at the neck of the salient. The Ukrainian general staff in Kiev had its hand in the utter defeat at Debaltsevo by stalling for days before reacting.

Inasmuch as the Ukrainian defeat at Debaltsevo could be studied as an example for pocket battles in modern warfare, at least one top rebel commander said that the losses were heavy for both sides, Ukrainian as well as rebel.

Commander of the Lugansk rebel Ghost Brigade Alexei Mozgovoi, characterized the losses for both sides at Debaltsevo as "colossal", according to a news report which appeared in nv.ua.

He said he did not like using combat methods from 1941 to resolve combat issues in the 21st century.

"I do not believe that the operation was successful. It was a lot of drawbacks of all these events," Mozgovoi said.

Rebel media since the end of February have focused on the tremendous losses by Ukrainians at Debaltsevo, but Mozgovoi's remarks are the first from the rebels' side to hint at the cost for the rebels.

Mozgovoi was recently the target of an assassination attempt two weeks ago, when his convoy was hit by a directional mine. A separate news item which appeared in regnum.ru said that a second Lugansk rebel unit commander, identified as Sergey Bondarenko, commander of the "Rus" battalion was similarly attacked using a directional mine.

The news report does not make clear when the attack took place on Bondarenko.

A third rebel commander, this time from Donetsk, Colonel Mikhail Tolstykh, known as "Givi", was attacked Tuesday as he drove his Kia Sorrento SUV from Makeevka. This time he was attacked with small arms fire. According to his remarks recorded in a youtube.com video, Givi was driving alone when the attack took place,. He said he returned fire with an AKMS rifle.

Givi was not wounded in the attack.

#2  There's a problem with the charge the accident was deliberate. If it was deliberate, then the crew of the MTLB would never have stopped.

They stopped and apparently dismounted the vehicle.

Not sure about the aftermath, but in my mind, the crew, drunk or not, with the intention of killing someone or not, won't stop to face the wrath of the crowd.

I will grant you that rebel media has been reporting rapes, robberies and general mayhem by Ukrainian troops in Artemovsk, but so far nothing in the way of news reports or videos of any of those incidents, and none of that was reported in Konstantinovka.

#3  As an aside,. I watched a youtube.com video of a Ukrainian BMP-2 that was run off the road into a ditch basically because the driver was driving too fast. The vehicle commander was sputtering he was so angry, demanding repeatedly the driver dismount, presumably so the commander could beat the sh*t out of him, uttering every expletive known to man. My take (aside from I thought it was funny) is that vehicle commanders take their driving seriously, probably having been trained about how badly a 25 ton vehicle can hurt an innocent.

Three Armenian soldiers killed in clashes with Azeris
At least three Armenian soldiers were killed and four injured in clashes with troops from Azerbaijan near Nagorno-Karabakh, but the two sides gave conflicting death tolls and disputed who was responsible.

The breakaway region's defense ministry said in a statement that three Armenian soldiers had died after Azeri commandos attacked their position. It said, "The Armenian side forced the enemy to escape after a two hour clash."

Azerbaijan's defense ministry accused separatists of starting the encounter and said 20 Armenian soldiers had been killed or injured.

US pushing Ukraine toward war: Russia
[Iran Press TV] Moscow says Washington is pushing Ukraine toward war by supporting a bill that has been passed by the Ukrainian parliament and that gives limited self-governance status to some regions in the restive east.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday also slammed US Vice President Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...
for the endorsement of the bill, which he said may undermine the Minsk agreements over Ukraine.

"Since Washington welcomes the move that undermines the Minsk agreements, one can only conclude that Washington is pushing Kiev toward a military resolution of the problem," Lavrov said.

He was speaking during a presser with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari in the Russian capital, Moscow.

The bill outlines the boundaries of particular districts in the areas under pro-Russians' control that could be granted special status with limited self-rule. The bill also says that areas controlled by the pro-Russians in Donetsk and Luhansk will be granted their special status after holding elections in accordance with Ukrainian law and under international observation.

The bill was also criticized by the pro-Russians of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics in eastern Ukraine.

Russia, China, others snub U.N. meeting on Crimea human rights
Since they have their own dogs.
[REUTERS] Russia, China, Venezuela and Angola snubbed an informal United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
Security Council meeting on Thursday on human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
in Crimea a year after Russia seized the Black Sea peninsula from Ukraine, diplomats said.

Russia's parliament approved the annexation of Crimea on March 21 last year after Russian forces took control of the peninsula, which is home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet, and residents backed joining the Russian Federation in a referendum.

"We consider this event counterproductive and provocative. It doesn't fall within the purview of the U.N. Security Council," said Russian U.N. mission front man Alexey Zaytsev.

A deadlocked 15-member Security Council has held more than 30 meetings on Ukraine since the seizure of Crimea. Fighting between Russia-backed separatist rebels and Ukrainian government troops in eastern Ukraine has killed more than 6,000 people and displaced more than 1 million people, the United Nations says.

Lithuania's U.N. Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaite, who organized the informal meeting, said it was unfortunate that Russia, China, Venezuela and Angola had not attended.

Burma's Nasty Little War on China's Border: The View from the Front
[Daily Beast] The Burmese army is fighting a drug lord's troops. Burmese refugees are fleeing into China. The Chinese government isn't sure what to do about it.

NANSAN, China -- Nearly every night, just across the frontier in Burma's Shan State, the hills of Kokang are on fire. It stains the fog of Yunnan's mountains, and the border villages see eight hours of twilight. Yet the mood is oddly serene. Locals don't seem too worried about conflict brewing at their doorstep. On the roof of one hotel, the staff has set up a television set so they can keep up with their favorite late-night programs, and they glance only occasionally toward the orange glow, usually as an afterthought to something they hear from that direction. They simply trust that the Burmese will keep the killing to their own side of the border, but recent events suggest otherwise.

#3  The PLA maybe huge but it is poorly equipped and even more poorly lead. The Vietnamese gave em a bloody nose back in the 80's. Now the Burmese wont put up with their shit. Don't know about Laos but I think the other SE Asian countries would come to their support. If the PLA ever tried to take on India they would be slaughtered. Same for Taiwan. Their only play is south into the South China Sea, short term, or north to Siberia, long term. They will be seriously challenged if they go into the south. My take is they will wait for demographics to decimate and depopulate the Russians and head north into Siberia, bout 20 years from now.

Posted by: Shipman || 03/20/2015 9:38 Comments || Top||

#5  Nothing to do with the PLA's effectiveness. This is the more likely explanation:

The faction of the MNDAA that is battling the Burmese army is nominally led by Peng Jiasheng, also known as Pheung Kya Shin, an octogenarian and ethnically Chinese commander who maintains about 1,000 troops... They were formerly part of the Communist Party of Burma, which was supported by Beijing... Peng’s faction of the MNDAA was defeated and scattered, and he allegedly went into exile in China...The border between China and Burma is porous. Many ethnic Han-Chinese families have members on both sides of the border, and cross-border trade is common. Chinese influence can be seen everywhere in Burmese border towns

Factor in the Chinese' government's ineffectiveness in the region, and one gets a pretty good picture.

The prime minister "can slag us as much as he likes but it is silly to use an example of the ultimate evil in politics," opposition MP Michael Danby said after walking out in disgust, the Telegraph website reported.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott caused an uproar after describing Labor leader Bill Shorten as "the Dr. Goebbels of economic policy" during question time.

Another Jewish opposition MP, Mark Dreyfus, was one of three members expelled from the chamber by the Speaker in the furor that followed the prime minister's remark.

Yahoo shutting down China office in latest cost-cutting move
[Al Ahram] Yahoo is closing its research and development center in China as CEO Marissa Mayer tries to placate shareholders pressuring the Internet company to cut costs while it struggles to bring in more revenue.

The Beijing operation's responsibilities will be shifted to other Yahoo Inc. offices, according to a company statement released late Wednesday. Yahoo didn't specify how many people will lose their jobs in China, but pledged to treat all the workers "with respect and fairness."

The closure will mark Yahoo's exit from China, where the Sunnyvale, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, company has been winding down since turning over its operations to Alibaba Group in 2005.

That $1 billion deal gave Yahoo a lucrative stake in Alibaba that is currently worth $33 billion. Yahoo is preparing to spin off its Alibaba holdings into a separately traded company later this year, removing an asset that deflected attention from the challenges facing Yahoo's own businesses.

Yahoo hired Mayer in July 2012 to engineer a turnaround, but so far she hasn't been able to boost the company's revenue even though advertisers have been shifting more of their spending to the Internet and mobile devices. Yahoo's revenue declined by 1 percent to $4.6 billion last year.

New York hedge fund Starboard Value, an activist investor that owns a 0.8 percent stake in Yahoo, is among the shareholders who believe Mayer needs to trim expenses. In an open letter released earlier this month, Starboard Value Managing Member Jeffrey Smith urged Mayer to cut costs by about $450 million annually. Smith is also among the Yahoo shareholders who called upon Mayer to spin off the Alibaba stake to avoid triggering a huge tax bill from sale of the stake.

In a January conference call, Mayer emphasized that Yahoo's payroll has remained roughly the same size since she arrived, even though the company had inherited more than 1,000 employees through acquisitions completed during her reign. She also pointed out that Yahoo had closed about a dozen offices while phasing out about 75 products during her tenure.

"We will continue to seek and execute on efficiencies that we find on an ongoing basis as an effort to better align our resources with our strategy and growth opportunities," Mayer pledged.

Europe
EU gears up for propaganda war with Russia
[Al Ahram] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
is set to launch a first operation in a new propaganda war with Russia within days of EU leaders giving formal approval to the campaign at a summit on Thursday.

Officials told Rooters that a dozen public relations and communications experts would start work by the end of March in Brussels with a brief to counter what the EU says is deliberate misinformation coordinated by the Kremlin over Moscow's role and aims in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe.

It is the first stage of a plan that leaders want EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to finalise by June, which may include efforts to produce and share Russian-language broadcast programming, notably for ethnic Russians in ex-Soviet states.

Those communities currently tune in heavily to Russian state broadcasters, which have bigger production budgets than local stations for their entertainment output, as well as news.

EU leaders, most especially in the Baltic states, have been alarmed at how Moscow has used its media to gain support for its views and policies - with budgets that are still likely to dwarf the few million euros a year that officials said the EU may provide.

Texas judge threatens Justice Department over Obama's immigration plan
[LA Times] Reporting from Brownsville - A federal judge threatened Thursday to sanction the Justice Department if he finds that government lawyers misled him about the rollout of President Champ's plan to shield up to 5 million people from deportation.

U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen, visibly pissed off annoyed, confronted a U.S. deputy assistant attorney general over previous government assurances on the timing of the program.

He asked why he shouldn't grant a discovery request for internal federal immigration documents -- a request filed Thursday by 26 states that are suing over Champ's executive actions on immigration.
Now scram, or I'll send Texas Rangers after your related correspondence, e-mails, and computers servers !
Hanen ordered a freeze on the Champ plan on Feb. 16 in response to the lawsuit, which accuses the administration of overstepping the president's authority.

Five police officials punished for indiscipline
[DAWN] KOHAT: District police officer Mohammad Sohaib Ashraf on Wednesday expelled two constables of special police force from service and ordered forfeiture of two years service of five other officials on the charges of indiscipline.

A special force constable, Mehtab Ahmed, stationed at the government girls high school, Togh Bala, for security had forcibly entered into the building, manhandled the women and used dirty language against them.

Another constable of the same force, Musawar Ali, could not give any reason for his long absence from duty. The DPO had ordered inquiries into the two cases, which proved them guilty. Consequently, they were expelled from service with immediate effect.

Also, two-year services of five coppers were forfeited and they were sent to the police lines for their negligence in a case where an armed man entered the courts building from the checkpoint and killed a murder accused in police custody. They were punished for not carrying out body search of the suspected man carrying a loaded pistol.

The five officials include havaldar Sabir Hussain and constables Syed Raza, Zafar Khan, Shamshad and Asad.

Lawyers show their true colours in court
[DAWN] LAHORE: A group of lawyers on Wednesday gave a sound thrashing to an elderly litigant in courtroom of an additional district and sessions judge.

Mehtab Bashir, 50, had come to the court to be testified in a fraud case filed against Rana Riaz Ahmad. The petitioner accused Ahmad of defrauding him of Rs7.5 million. Sattukatla police had also registered an FIR against the suspect.

As judge Chaudhry Zafar Iqbal resumed hearing, legal eagles of suspect Ahmad attacked Bashir with kicks and fists. The lawyers continued their bashing till the petitioner fell unconscious. The judge tried to calm down the situation but failed, an eyewitness said.

Some other advocates were also present in the court but they just looked on and let their colleagues finish their job. The aggressive lawyers went away after injuring the litigant, he said.

The injured was taken to hospital. The judge adjourned proceedings till March 25.

Antarctic Sea Ice Did The Exact Opposite Of What Models Predicted
h/t IMAO
Climate models can be good tools for predicting future sea ice levels -- unless, of course, they are completely wrong.

In the case of Antarctica, the climate models were dead wrong, according to a new study by Chinese scientists published in the journal Cryosphere. The study found that most climate models predicted Antarctic sea ice coverage would shrink as the world warmed and greenhouse gas levels increased.

The opposite happened. Most climate models analyzed in the study predicted Antarctica would shrink between 1979 and 2005, but instead south pole sea ice levels increased during that time. Going a step further, sea ice levels have only increased since 2006, hitting all-time highs for sea ice coverage in September of last year.
I blame the Atomic Bomb. Before it academic research jobs were low paying & ill regarded---and therefore only attracting people with genuine vocation.

Why does the EPA want to crack down on BBQs?
$18T in debt and we need to crack down on evil BBQs and keep track of your water usage in the hotel shower?

Even if we aren't $18T in debt, is this the best we can do to give people quality of life?

What could possibly be wrong with that?

BBQ'ing promotes family gatherings, self-reliance, leisure time, achievement, white privilege, etc.

#5  I think it's just a study (so far) & not actual regulation. And focussed on 'big' barbecue operators' exposure to harmful smoke and chemicals, not casual back yarders (so far.) Not (yet) an attempt at more power, just a way to justify a job by doing a 'study.' There is a HUGE amount of that kind of thing in government.

White House Scrubs Iran From Terror Threat Report
[Investors Bus Daily] Foreign Policy: Winning "hearts and minds" in Tehran has reached full blossom for the Champ regime. It has even bleached Iran and Hezbollah out of its new intelligence report on worldwide terrorist threats.

President Champ is trying to curry favor with Iran's mullahs to cut a sucker nuclear arms deal. But does he have to look the other way at their proven terror sponsorship?

The 2015 "Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community" excludes Iran and its network of terrorist groups, driven by the Shia sect of Islam, from the report's terror section.

This is a sharp turn from 2014, when Iran featured prominently in the report on national security threats. In fact, Iran and its Hezbollah army in Lebanon got its own subsection then.

Anyone hear a peep from the so-called Intelligence Community? No, I didn't think so.

I wonder if the Champ ran this action by his pals at the United Nations, or if he took the action on his own? Next thing you know he'll be addressing his new Iranian friends in a presidential telecast....oh WAIT !
