Russian former PM Yevgeny Primakov dies aged 85
[Al Ahram] Yevgeny Primakov, an economist who served as Russia's prime minister in 1998-1999, has died aged 85, the Kremlin said on Friday.

Primakov was premier under president Boris Yeltsin and had also served as foreign minister. "He was a statesman, scientist, politician, he has left behind a great legacy," Kremlin front man Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

Crews to attempt to recover 9 victims of Alaska plane crash
[AF.REUTERS] Emergency crews will try on Friday to recover the bodies of nine victims of a sight-seeing plane crash in Alaska while federal Sherlocks work to determine what caused the wreck, rescue officials said.
Photo is a typical DeHavilland, not the aircraft which crashed.
Eight passengers and the pilot were killed when the plane went down during a tour of the Misty Fjords area of southeast Alaska on Thursday afternoon, flight operator Promech Air said.

"We are going to be taking a look at the local weather but we are planning on a mission down to recover the victims this morning," said Jerry Kiffer, president of the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad.

The DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter float plane crashed near Ella Lake, about 20 miles (30 km) northeast of the town of Ketchikan, cruise operator Holland America Line said.

Kiffer said recovery efforts had been delayed because of the location of the crash site, low visibility due to clouds and fog and the precarious position of the plane on the side of a steep rock face.

"We consider the aircraft unstable," he said.

Conditions at the nearby Ketchikan International Airport were overcast and rainy around the time of the crash, the National Weather Service said.

41 dead in western India flood
[ARABNEWS] Flash flooding triggered by torrential rains has killed 41 people in India's western Gujarat
...where rioting seems to be a traditional passtime...
state, as the annual monsoon season hits the country, a disaster management official said Thursday.

Authorities have evacuated more than 10,000 residents mainly from coastal areas of Gujarat following heavy rains in the last 24 hours, the state government said in a statement.

The coastal district of Amreli was the worst affected, with 36 people killed in flood-related incidents, a duty officer in the state's disaster control room said.

"There have been 41 deaths across the state with 36 in Amreli, three in Bhavnagar and two in Rajkot districts," the official told AFP.

Thirteen of the deaths in Amreli occurred when two houses collapsed in the flooding, local police deputy superintendent Pinakin Parmar told AFP.

India normally sees flooding during the monsoon but the intensity of this year's rains in Gujarat has surprised many.

The air force has been deployed to help with evacuations, including that of 44 passengers of a bus stuck on a flooded highway near Amreli town, the government's statement said.

This Week In Guns, June 27th, 2015

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

As mentioned here two weeks ago, David Codrea was fired from his column at Examiner, and had been looking for a news home. And he found it with The Truth About Guns. I haven't read enough about it to understand what the deal is between him and Robert Farago, TTAG's proprietor. I have dealt with Farago personally, and he is a genoowine bullsh*t artist. I wish the best of luck to David Codrea, because when dealing with Farago he will definitely need it. Some background stuff on Farago can be found here. Farago is not very popular or well regarded in some circles, including this one.

The speed at which mega corporations such as Apple went after game publishers with the Confederate flag is simply stunning. This all had to have been done through Twitter. No need to organize a campaign: just get 3,000 of your closest buddies to raise holy hell, and suddenly, an offending game display is destroyed. These guys will definitely be going after guns as soon as they can, I s'pect.

The latest news is that Apple has restored some games with the Confederate flag.

E.J. Dionne, the leftist writer from the Washington Post wants to press the notion that people have a right to be free from guns. This is part of a developing campaign by fascists to get gun owners shamed into giving up their rights. The sad part is that it would probably work on a large cross section of gun owners.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Prices for pistol ammunition and for rifle ammunition were mostly lower.

Prices for used pistols were mixed, while prices for used rifles were mixed.

Once again, the average price for the AR-10 pattern .308/7.62x51 NATO rifle has reached a new low at $898 after a brief spike of three weeks from $920.

A reminder: The report for 2Q, 2015 will be out next week.

#5  AKs are pretty much a commodity, so quality comes down to who assembles it. The key issue in AKs is the feeding of ammunition and spent shell ejections.

Problems in AK comes down to two: ejection issues and bolt over base issue, both problems are imminently fixable with the assembler, in the case of a new build, or a gun smith in the case of a personal build.

As a personal note, the AK is a helluva fine rifle.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia has rehearsed an invasion of Scandanavia
A mock invasion of Sweden and Norway has been carried out by 33,000 Russian troops, a US security think tank has claimed.

Tens of thousands of soldiers rehearsed a military takeover of Swedish and Norwegian territory near the Baltic Sea in March, security expert Edward Lucas said in a report for the US-based Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA).

The exercise also simulated the invasion of other areas including the Danish island of Bornholm, Finland's Swedish-speaking Åland islands, and northern Norway, according to the report, The Coming Storm.

'The scenario included the speedy seizure of northern Norway, the Åland islands, the Swedish island of Gotland and the Danish island of Bornholm,' the report states.

Pakistan morgues run out of space as heat wave kills over 1,000
[ARABNEWS] The worst heat wave to hit Pakistain's southern city of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
for nearly 35 years has killed more than 1,000 people, a charity said on Thursday, as morgues ran out of space and residents rushed to supply over-stretched public hospitals.

Tents offering iced water and rehydration salts have mushroomed on street corners, run by rival political parties and the military. Residents in one neighborhood hacked into a main water pipe and then danced delightedly in the spray.

The heat wave in the city of 20 million people coincided with severe electricity cuts, leaving many without fans, water or light, and the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, when many Moslems do not eat or drink during daylight hours.

Some shops have refused to sell ice or water during the day, citing religious laws that mean they can be fined. It is also illegal to eat or drink in public from dawn to dusk.

Temperatures shot up to 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) at the weekend, the hottest since 1981, although they dipped to 38C (100F) on Thursday. Forecasters have been predicting rain for days, but there has been no significant fall. An influx of dead means body bags have stacked up on the floor of the morgues, said Anwar Kazmi, a bigwig of the charitable organization the Edhi Foundation.

Heatwave eases after killing 1,150 Pakistanis
[NATION.PK] Sea breezes today brought lower temperatures to ease a heatwave that killed more than 1,150 people around Pakistain's teeming port city of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
during the Moslem fasting month of Ramazan.

Mass funerals were held for 50 unidentified victims on Friday before their bodies were hastily buried.

The extreme heat of up to 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) - the hottest since 1981 - coincided with power failures and triggered sharp criticism of the government's response in the city of 20 million people.

Today, the daily high temperature was about 36 degree Celsius (97 Fahrenheit), according to Dr Mohammad Hanif of the Director National Weather Forecasting Centre.

Gilani assures to surrender Turkish First Lady's necklace by Friday
[NATION.PK] Former Prime Minister of Pakistain Youasf Raza Gilani, assured Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), to return the necklace of Turkish First Lady, on Friday.

While recording statement to FIA, he assured that Faisal Kareem Kundi will submit the necklace soon.

On June 21, FIA served a legal notice to former Prime Minister of Pakistain Yousaf Raza Gilani, on the issue of Turkish First Lady necklace. According to the sources, the FIA has given 48 hours ultimatum to ex premier to return that necklace, otherwise legal action will be taken against him under Section 403.

Section 403 of Pakistain Penal Code-PPC suggests that "whoever dishonestly misappropriates or converts to his own use any 'movable property; shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both".

Earlier, then Prime Minister of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
wife had donated her necklace for the victims of floods 2010 in Pakistain, which was purchased by NADRA in 1.5 million rupees. About four weeks ago, interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
had raised the issue that necklace of Turkey's first lady has lost, therefore he asked for the inquiry.
