Best Buy security guard fired after tackling man who allegedly struck California cop, tried to flee
[FOX] A Best Buy security guard who tackled a man wanted on a felony warrant -- and who had allegedly just hit a cop -- was reportedly fired for his good deed because it ran counter to corporate policy.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened at the Best Buy in Roseville, California, located outside Sacramento.

Timothy Trujillo, who was wanted on a felony warrant by Nevada State Police, reportedly struck a police officer and tried to flee when deputies searching for him turned up in Roseville on Jan. 11.

"When they confronted him, the man punched one of the detectives and tried to run off, that’s when the security guard tackled the man, preventing him from escaping," Placer County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Andrew Scott told FOX40.

#1  Shrinkage is already baked into product costs at most large box stores.

In the socialist utopia, the burden of theft is shared by everyone. Mr. Trujillo's lawyer will sue for back injuries resulting from the tackle. Our 'out of court' settlement may reach into the millions.

The stolen iPhone was only $750. The legal settlement must also be baked into periodic price increases making us less competitive.

Between 18 and 32% of our customer base will be offended by the racist visual. The injured policeman is none of our concern. New security guards are easy to find.

Thanks for shopping at BEST BUY.

Prison-bound? Grand Prairie mom sentenced to 8 years for illegal voting loses appeal
[Star-Telegram] A Grand Prairie mother of four who drew national attention after a Tarrant County jury sentenced her to eight years in prison for illegal voting has lost her appeal.

The 2nd Court of Appeals this month upheld the original conviction and sentence of Rosa Maria Ortega.

"This case underscores the importance that Texans place on the institution of voting, and the hallowed principle that every citizen’s vote must count," Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a written statement. "We will hold those accountable who falsely claim eligibility and purposely subvert the election process in Texas."

Ortega, who was released from jail on an appeal bond a month after her 2017 conviction, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

#4  There have been several cases of voter fraud recently filed by the attorney general’s office in Tarrant County. Among them, an alleged “voter fraud ring” in Fort Worth that led to the indictment of four women: Leticia Sanchez, Leticia Sanchez Tepichin, Maria Solis and Laura Parra.

I wonder who funds such operations? Well, maybe not.

What was Rosa Maria Ortega's motivation for putting herself in the hoosegow? Every time an illegal votes, it has the potential of negating honest votes and nullifying an election.

Arkansas man, 18, admits trying to steal a commercial jet so he could go to a rap concert in Chicago, despite having no pilot training and admitting he thought he'd 'only need to pull some levers and push some buttons'
[Mail] An 18-year-old Arkansas man has pleaded guilty to attempting to steal a commercial jet that he wanted to fly to a rap concert in Chicago on the Fourth of July.

Zemarcuis Scott was sentenced to five years of felony probation after he tried to steal an American Eagle twin-engine jet to see the rapper Famous Dex on July 4, 2018.

Scott told police at the time that while he had no pilot training, the teen believed he would only need to pull some levers and push some buttons to operate the 44-seat plane.

The teen pleaded guilty on Thursday to attempted theft of property and commercial burglary.

'World's loneliest duck' Trevor dies on tiny Niue
[DAWN] A lone duck named Trevor that lived on the tiny Pacific island nation of Niue has died, officials say, sparking an outpouring of grief from as far away as New Zealand.

The celebrity mallard found fame last year after a visiting journalist from New Zealand discovered that his makeshift home, near a puddle, was used for directions.

But his 15 seconds of fame were tragically cut short when he was "seen dead in the bush after being attacked by dogs" this weekend, a Facebook page dedicated to Trevor said.

The chief executive of the Niue Chamber of Commerce, Rae Findlay, said it was a "sad time for Niue".

"He captivated the locals, of which there are only 1,600 in Niue, and the 9,000 visitors to Niue each year," Findlay told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Sunday.

"He will definitely be missed, he captured many hearts and even the rooster, the chicken and the weka were looking a little forlorn today wandering around the near-dry puddle."

Niue, a tiny speck of land, lies around 2,400 kilometres (1,500 miles) northeast of New Zealand.

One of the world's biggest coral islands, Niue does not have natural ponds or wetlands, so when Trevor turned up a year ago he was believed to have blown in from New Zealand with a storm.

He quickly settled down in a large puddle near a road that the Niue fire service later topped up with water, the ABC reported.

He became so famous locally that when the New Zealand Herald's deputy political editor Claire Trevett visited the island nation, she found he had been incorporated into street directions.

"Someone said, 'Turn right past the duck' and then the whole story came out, the only duck on Niue," she told the ABC. He was later dubbed the "world's loneliest duck" for his solitary existence.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
A $hitty Thing Happened To This Thief
Ahhh, the power of karma. Via Drudge.
[The Smoking Gun] - JANUARY 27--A Florida Man is behind bars after stealing what he thought were Hydrocodone pills, but which turned out to actually be over-the-counter laxatives and not powerful prescription opioids, according to a criminal complaint.

Cops allege that Peter Hans Emery, 56, took the pills from a "lock box" at the victim’s Pinellas Park home Thursday morning. The complaint lists Emery’s home address as the site of the theft itself. His relationship with the 49-year-old victim is unknown.

Emery, cops say, was recorded by a video camera "entering the victim’s lock box, selecting a pill bottle, pouring pills into his hand, and then leaving." The pill container was labeled "Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen."

However, Emery subsequently discovered that he had not swiped painkillers. The pill bottle actually contained dosages of Equate Gentle Laxative, which promises "predictable overnight relief" from constipation.
'predictable', as in spending half the night on the can...
When Pinellas Park Police Department officers caught up with Emery Thursday night, he reportedly admitted taking the pills because he thought they were Hydrocodone. "But he threw them away when he learned they were something else," investigators noted.

Seen above, Emery was booked into the Pinellas County jail on a felony charge since his rap sheet includes two prior theft convictions. Emery is also facing probation violation charges since he is in the midst of a two-year community supervision term related to a conviction last year for theft and illegal possession of the painkiller Dilaudid.

Emery, a habitual offender, has served a combined 28 months in state prison and has a rap sheet brimming with arrests for offenses like burglary; cocaine possession; forgery; grand theft; resisting arrest; auto theft; and failure to appear in court.

Candles and kerosene lamps to make comeback as PG&E files for bankrupsy
(Reuters) - Power provider PG&E Corp filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, succumbing to liabilities stemming from wildfires in Northern California in 2017 and 2018.

The owner of the biggest U.S. power utility has filed a motion seeking court approval for a $5.5 billion debtor-in-possession financing, it said in a statement.

PG&E listed assets of $71.39 billion and liabilities of $51.69 billion, in a court document filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.

"Throughout this process, we are fully committed to enhancing our wildfire safety efforts, as well as helping restoration and rebuilding efforts across the communities impacted by the devastating Northern California wildfires," PG&E interim Chief Executive Officer John Simon said.

The company said it intends to pay suppliers in full under normal terms for goods and services provided on or after the date of the Chapter 11 filing.

Separately, PG&E shareholder BlueMountain Capital Management LLC said it was "deeply disappointed" that the company’s board ignored calls from multiple parties to abandon its "reckless and irresponsible plan to file for bankruptcy."

The investment firm said it would propose a slate of board directors no later than Feb. 21, and urged all PG&E stakeholders to support change at the company.

[UPDATE: 2 Officers In Critical Condition] ‐ Police confirm FIVE police officers have been shot in Houston!
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Four Houston police officers have been wounded, and one injured, in a shooting in southeast Houston while serving a narcotics warrant.

Life Flight was called to the scene. All the officers have been taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Two of the officers, ages 54 and 40, are in surgery in critical condition. Both were reportedly shot in the neck.

WHAT WE KNOW: Details on the injured officers

The other three injured officers are listed as stable. One of those officers is expected to be discharged from the hospital. None of the officers' names have been released.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo says narcotics officers, with patrol officers on the scene to provide support, announced themselves at the suspects' home in the 7800 block of Harding at about 4:15 p.m. Monday. Immediately, officers were under fire from one or two suspects inside the home.

Houston police confirmed two suspects were killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Exclusive: Boeing nears $3.5 billion 737 MAX jet deal with Japan's ANA - sources
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Boeing Co is close to a deal worth $3.5 billion at list prices to sell 30 737 MAX jetliners to Japan’s biggest carrier, ANA Holdings, two people familiar with the matter said.

A deal would be the first sale in Japan for the newest version of Boeing’s best-selling 737 family. Five years ago, ANA was also the first carrier from the country to pick the competing A320neo narrowbody from France’s Airbus SE.

It would also come at a time when Japan is facing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to cut its trade surplus with the United States.

An announcement on an ANA-Boeing deal could come as early as Tuesday, subject to the airline’s final approval, the people told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

ANA confirmed it was considering an order of Boeing jets, but did not provide any details.

"We are in discussion with Boeing, but we have not made our final decision yet," an ANA representative said. The airline is scheduled to report its quarterly results on Tuesday.

Boeing declined to comment.

[Right Scoop] I’ve finally got some good news for you.

Republicans in the Senate are planning to make a rule change that will help expedite the approval of both judicial and executive branch nominees, so that they can get past the backlog caused by Democrat stone-walling over the last two years.

Republicans would like the rule change to be made on a bipartisan basis, but are prepared to use the nuclear option to make it happen in the next couple months:

New leprosy cases registered in Karachi
[DAWN] A charity working for years in the city and the country on the lam for eradication of leprosy has said every year more than 400 new leprosy cases were registered in Pakistain.

Officials said last year 413 new leprosy cases were registered and 71 of them were found deformed.

"This accounts for 17pc of all registered patients. Sindh has the greatest number of leprosy patients in Pakistain," said Mervyn Lobo, chief executive officer, Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre, founded by the late Dr Ruth Pfau, at a press briefing marking World Leprosy Day at MALC office.

He said there were 194 cases from Sindh in 2017 which accounted for 47pc of the national figure. Only Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
accounted for 23pc of the leprosy cases nationwide, almost half of the cases reported from Sindh.

Man who exposed Kohistan video scandal seeks security
[DAWN] The man, who had brought the Kohistan

video scandal of 2012, to the media and later to the court, has demanded of the law enforcement agencies to provide him security as his rivals were threatening to kill him.

Talking to mediapersons in Bisham on Sunday, Afzal Kohistani said during the last court hearing he was scared as his rivals had informed their group about his arrival at the civil court in Kolai Pallas Kohistan.

"After the court convicted the accused for killing five women seen in the video on the order of a jirga, my life is under threat and I am seeking security," he said.

He alleged that recently a jirga held in Pallas had planned to kill him wherever he was spotted.

"They think that I have defamed the honour of the people of Kohistan, and killing me is their target, but I will continue the fight against the so-called culture in which animals are more valuable than human beings," said Mr Kohistani, whose three brothers were also killed after the incident.

"I have submitted several applications to the Hazara

division’s regional police officer for my security, especially when I visit Kohistan and Bisham for court hearings because I as well as my family are receiving life threats by those angered by the court decision," he said. He said if anything happened to him the responsibility would be on the Hazara police.

"I left Kohistan in 2012 after the case surfaced due to life threats, but my younger brothers who were seen dancing in the video cannot come out of their house for fear of being killed," he said.

Apple rushes to fix FaceTime 'eavesdropping' bug
[BBC] Apple has acknowledged a flaw in its FaceTime software that allowed for brief eavesdropping - even if the recipient did not pick up.

In some cases the target iPhone would send video, probably without the receiver's knowledge. The company said it had developed a fix and an update would be rolled out this week.

In the meantime, Apple appears to have disabled the ability for users to make group calls on FaceTime. The flaw, first revealed by the 9to5Mac blog, appears to occur when both users are running version 12.1 of Apple's mobile operating system, or newer.

The technique involves using the software's group chat function, apparently confusing the software into activating the target's microphone, even if the call had not been accepted.

The eavesdropping ends when the call is cut after too many rings.

Chinese companies OneSpace and iSpace are preparing for first orbital launches
h/t Instapundit
Chinese private companies OneSpace and iSpace are making progress with plans to attempt their first orbital launches in the first half of 2019.

OneSpace is currently working toward a launch of its OS-M rocket that could come as early as late March, following engine tests for the four stages of the launch vehicle in the second half of 2018.

A OneSpace representative told SpaceNews that the company will soon proceed with comprehensive electrical systems and payload fairing separation tests as next steps toward launch.

The 19-meter-tall, four-stage OS-M will be able to carry a 205-kilogram payload to 300-kilometer low Earth orbit (LEO), and 73 kilograms to 800-kilometer Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO), but the payload for the maiden flight has not yet been disclosed.

Should the OS-M put a satellite in orbit would be the landmark first successful orbital launch for a privately-owned Chinese company. At least 10 such firms have emerged since a Chinese government policy shift in late 2014 to allow private capital into the launch and small satellite sectors.

LGBT Community Outraged: John Hopkins Psychiatrist Says Transgender Is Mental Disorder, Sex Change Biologically Impossible
[BBC] Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, said that transgenderism is a "mental disorder" that merits treatment, that sex change is "biologically impossible," and that people who promote sexual reassignment surgery are collaborating with and promoting a mental disorder.
I remain skeptical.
Someone please tell me David Reed Bromstad is actually NOT one sick bastid.

Dr. McHugh, the author of six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical articles, made his remarks in a recent commentary in the Wall Street Journal, where he explained that transgender surgery is not the solution for people who suffer a "disorder of ’assumption’" ‐ the notion that their maleness or femaleness is different than what nature assigned to them biologically.

He also reported on a new study showing that the suicide rate among transgendered people who had reassignment surgery is 20 times higher than the suicide rate among non-transgender people. Dr. McHugh further noted studies from Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic of children who had expressed transgender feelings but for whom, over time, 70%-80% "spontaneously lost those feelings."
As we suspected, a self-correcting anomaly.
While the Obama administration, Hollywood, and major media such as Time magazine promote transgenderism as normal, said Dr. McHugh, these "policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention."

"This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken ‐ it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes."
Loss of appetite, male pattern baldness, and in some cases death.
The transgendered person’s disorder, said Dr. McHugh, is in the person’s "assumption" that they are different than the physical reality of their body, their maleness or femaleness, as assigned by nature. It is a disorder similar to a "dangerously thin" person suffering anorexia who looks in the mirror and thinks they are "overweight," said McHugh.

This assumption, that one’s gender is only in the mind regardless of anatomical reality, has led some transgendered people to push for social acceptance and affirmation of their own subjective "personal truth," said Dr. McHugh. As a result, some states ‐ California, New Jersey, and Massachusetts ‐ have passed laws barring psychiatrists, "even with parental permission, from striving to restore natural gender feelings to a transgender minor," he said.

The pro-transgender advocates do not want to know, said McHugh, that studies show between 70% and 80% of children who express transgender feelings "spontaneously lose those feelings" over time. Also, for those who had sexual reassignment surgery, most said they were "satisfied" with the operation "but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn’t have the surgery."

"And so at Hopkins we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a ’satisfied’ but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs," said Dr. McHugh.
Keep the dress and your package. What's not to like ?
The former Johns Hopkins chief of psychiatry also warned against enabling or encouraging certain subgroups of the transgendered, such as young people "susceptible to suggestion from ’everything is normal’ sex education," and the schools’ "diversity counselors" who, like "cult leaders," may "encourage these young people to distance themselves from their families and offer advice on rebutting arguments against having transgender surgery."

Dr. McHugh also reported that there are "misguided doctors" who, working with very young children who seem to imitate the opposite sex, will administer "puberty-delaying hormones to render later sex-change surgeries less onerous ‐ even though the drugs stunt the children’s growth and risk causing sterility."

Such action comes "close to child abuse," said Dr. McHugh, given that close to 80% of those kids will "abandon their confusion and grow naturally into adult life if untreated ...."
Trading my sister's old Schwinn for a Vespa, it simply seemed like the right thing to do at the time.
