DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — On top of dealing with power outages and boil water advisories, many North Texans have been frustrated by nearly empty shelves at grocery stores across the Metroplex.
"I know it’s unnerving for customers when they come in the store and it doesn’t look like the grocery store they know and love," said Christy Lara, director of public relations for the southern division of Tom Thumb and Albertsons. "There’s been an increase in demand, coupled with some stores that have dealt with power outages and had to [get rid of] product as a result."

The hazardous road conditions have also made it difficult for suppliers and trucks to get in.
"So that has impacted us exponentially with getting product replenished in our stores," said April Martin, corporate affairs manager for the Kroger Dallas division. "We’re hoping to see some type of normalcy — I’ll put that in air quotes — by this weekend."
The situation at grocery stores is reminiscent of what happened at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

Panic buying. I was without power for 30 hours straight Monday and Tuesday. Ventured out Wed to stock up on my favorite cracker and found the local Kroger lot jam-packed. I went home, empty-handed.
Sort of like the power - demand exceeded supply.
My brother lives in Dallas and reported yesterday that his local Wal-Mart was pretty well stocked.
Of course, the doom and gloom from the media fueled all of it.

Just remember in a civil war, interstate commerce will shut down. That includes rail and energy (pipelines and transmission lines).

Several DFW store chains such as Aldi are well stocked. There is no food shortage there. Shelves at Kroger are empty in some places but by not more than 15-20%.

Unil the trucks with new stuff get there. Bread and dairy hve supply chains all their own. Did you wonder how dairy farmers did during the storm? Badly.

About 30 minutes after #2, the wife and I went to Sprouts Farmers Market and talked to a manager. They lost power Tue-Wed-Thu and spent all day Friday tossing the frozen or refrigerated products. Those shelves were empty.
The Tom Thumb across the street was pretty well stocked. The checkout girl had no idea how long their power was off, but they might be in a different grid than the Sprouts.
But that was well before the ice started melting and the late sleepers got up.

[LB.ua] Ukrainian military units and Russian back militant in southeastern Ukraine exchanged fire Friday, according to Russian language news reports.
According to the Russian language lb.ua, units from the separatist Sever military formation fired 120mm mortars near Zaistevo, which is north of Donetsk.
According to a post in reserve FSB Colonel Igor Girkin's VKontakte page, Ukrainian units fired on separatists from Trudovsky and Staromikhaylovka using RPG and grenade launchers.
[EpochTimes] Chinese authorities recently announced a crackdown on criminal rings involved in making fake COVID-19 vaccines, and revealed that some of the products were distributed to other countries.
Arrested suspects were accused of gaining illicit profits totaling around 18 million yuan (about $2.78 million).
As of Feb. 10, 21 vaccine-related cases were being investigated across the country, with 70 suspects arrested, according to a Feb. 15 report by Chinese state media Xinhua.
In the early stages of China’s vaccine rollout, the report said, suspects made huge profits through manufacturing fake vaccines, selling and reselling them at high prices, and inoculating groups without authorization.
Some of the Chinese-made fake vaccines were reportedly transported from Tianjin to Shenzhen, and then smuggled to other countries via Hong Kong. Xinhua did not specify which countries.
The criminal rings allegedly bought prefilled syringes or packaged saline solution or mineral water (when saline solution was out of stock) into fake vaccines. They then illegally set up emergency inoculation centers.
Suspects claimed that theirs were "genuine COVID-19 shots obtained through internal channels."
They placed advertisements on social media to solicit customers. They also forged employee certificates, overseas job certificates, air tickets, and other supporting documents to appear like legitimate vaccine distributors.
In one case, suspects arranged for more than 200 people to receive about 500 doses of fake shots, making a profit of 547,000 yuan (about $84,695) as of December 2020.
Others profited from a scheme to arrange for citizens to get inoculated through emergency vaccination programs at hospitals. At the time, the Chinese regime only allowed high-risk populations to take the vaccine. The suspects charged money for people to have access to real vaccine shots.
Vaccine-related scandals are common in China.
Lu Jun, co-founder of the nonprofit Beijing Yirenping Center, told Radio Free Asia that in China, officially-approved organizations are often involved in illegal activity.
"Either licensed manufacturers produced sub-standard vaccines, or governmental anti-epidemic agencies committed irregularities or even illegal operations in the process of vaccine procurement, distribution, and transportation," Lu said.
He cited a scandal that erupted in 2010, after a pharmaceutical company in Shanxi Province was found to have produced sub-standard vaccines, leading to local deaths. According to an investigation by state media China Economic Times, the company colluded with the Shanxi government to distribute the vaccines across the province.

No one will be able to collect a ballot other then their own or one for a member of their immediate family
Only voters specifically asking for a ballot would get one.
Vote-by-mail requests must be made on a yearly basis.
Vote by mail ballot signatures must match the most recent signature on file
Political parties and candidates must be permitted to observe the signature matching process.
Supervisors of Elections will have to report how many ballots have been requested, received and left to be counted, They also have to post over-vote ballots on their respective websites for the canvassing boards before the boards' meetings.

Not going to happen in "woke jurisdictions" unless mandated at the federal level. That won't happen unless there's a supermajority in the congress and a president that will sign such a measure. Such a supermajority would have to have no GOPe squishes in it. Very tall order for now.

The Times confirmed the report with sources close to Ivanka Trump, who said she was never seriously considering a run. Rubio and Donald Trump were sharply at odds during the 2016 election, when both were seeking the nomination, but have since formed a working partnership.
Ivanka Trump and Kushner are said to be moving to Florida, in part because they are no longer welcome among their former friends in New York City, where the Trump brand has fallen out of favor because of Donald Trump’s policies over the past four years.
Eric Trump’s wife, Lara, is reportedly more serious about a Senate candidacy in North Carolina, where the incumbent Republican, Richard Burr, has said he will not run in 2022. Eric Trump is the former president’s son.

[JPost] - Israeli scientists and researchers are racing to find a cure for COVID-19, as global consensus is forming among medical professionals that vaccination is not going to eliminate corona.
When Israel launched its mass vaccination campaign, there were many who believed there would no longer be a need for medication, Prof. Eli Schwartz, founder of the Center for Travel Medicine and Tropical Disease at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, told The Jerusalem Post.
"Now we know that this was an illusion," he said. "Even in Israel, not everyone is taking the vaccine. There is quite a big population of youngsters under the age of 16 for whom it will be at least months until we have a vaccine."
Prof. Shlomo Maayan, head of the Infectious Disease Division at Barzilai Medical Center, explained to the Post that there are three reasons the vaccines will not mean the end of COVID. First, even the most effective vaccines — Pfizer and Moderna — are only around 95% effective. That means that there is still a one-in-1,000 chance of getting the virus.
Moreover, the virus continually mutates, which means that at various points a mutation may come about that renders the vaccines less effective or even noneffective, as was shown in the case of the South African mutation.
Finally, the global population is massive, and it will take a long time, probably several years, for everyone who wants to be inoculated to be jabbed. Most importantly, based on pre-Covid studies of coronaviruses, we expect the vaccination induced immunity to be transient.
Even in Israel, there is no expectation of 100% recovery from the pandemic.
As such, teams of medical professionals and scientists are striving to develop novel treatments and drugs to help solve the crisis and keep people out of hospitals.
Almost daily, there is an announcement of a breakthrough medication — many of them being tested in Israel.
Despite all of the excitement around them, Prof. Yaakov Nahmias, director of the Grass Center for Bioengineering at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said that these press releases "need to be taken with a grain of salt" and put into perspective.
..."There is a plethora of drugs that are being used [during the pandemic]," said Maayan. "Some of the drugs we started using a year ago we are still using, and some have been phased out."
For example, Gilead’s remdesivir, which was originally touted for its believed ability to hinder the virus’s ability to reproduce, was later discovered to be only modestly effective.
The same is true with hydroxychloroquine, which is traditionally used to prevent or treat malaria. At the beginning of the pandemic, the drug was given emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration. That authorization was later revoked, after reports of serious heart rhythm problems and other safety issues, including blood and lymph system disorders, kidney injuries and liver problems and failure.
In contrast, monoclonal antibodies — laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system’s ability to fight off harmful antigens, including viruses, and that became well-known last year when former US president Donald Trump received them immediately upon being diagnosed with COVID-19 — continue to be used by hospitals worldwide to help ward off serious infection.
"The idea is to do a proper study," Maayan said. "If you do not have a proper study, you don’t have a control group, then even if the initial impression is good, it is not really good enough." Details at the link.
