John Oliver's prescient comments on Meghan go viral after Oprah interview
[LATIMES] John Oliver had a feeling marrying into the royal family would be a trying experience for Meghan Markle. He told fellow TV host Stephen Colbert as much in 2018.

In the wake of Oprah Winfrey’s bombshell interview with Meghan and Prince Harry , the "Last Week Tonight" star’s prescient comments on the Duchess of Sussex have gone viral on social media. During Markle’s intimate conversation with Winfrey, which aired Sunday in the U.S., the former "Suits" actress opened up about several challenges she has faced since wedding the prince, including suicidal thoughts and "concerns" from within the palace over her first child’s skin color.

"I would not blame [Meghan] if she pulled out of this at the last minute," Oliver told Colbert on "The Late Show" before the Sussexes’ union in 2018. "I don’t think you need to have just seen the pilot episode of ’The Crown’ to get a basic sense that she might be marrying into a family that could cause her some emotional complications.

Diplomats Warned of Coronavirus Experiments at Wuhan Lab 2 Years Before Pandemic
[PJ] The Chinese pandemic fable — that the disease broke out in a seafood market in Wuhan — fell apart months ago and Beijing has resisted any and all attempts to solve the riddle of where and how the coronavirus spread.

It’s almost incomprehensible that any nation would withhold and cover up vital information that could help the world deal with the current pandemic and prevent future ones. Then you remember that China is a communist country that bases its actions on a rigid, unyielding ideology that brooks no opposition and is incapable of error. If you keep that in mind, the Chinese’s actions are completely rational and easily understood.

The recent foray into China by a team of experts who had been charged by the World Health Organization (WHO) to solve the riddle of the coronavirus’s origins met with stonewalls at every turn. They were delayed in entering the country when the Chinese government slow-walked their visa applications. They weren’t given access to medical records of some of the first known cases of COVID-19. They were prevented from interviewing some of the scientists involved in the research on bat viruses and were refused access to some of their records.

At every turn, China has lied, obfuscated, obstructed, and misled investigators into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. They’ve even gone so far as to launch a bogus campaign to have the WHO team "investigate" their pet theory that the coronavirus was spread via shipments of frozen food from other countries.

In the last days of the Trump administration, the U.S. State Department issued a statement making the shocking claim that several scientists at the Wuhan lab that’s under investigation for being a point of origin for the virus were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the autumn of 2019. Since it was Donald Trump’s State Department, the charges were largely ignored. But now evidence has emerged that diplomats were warning as far back as 2017 that the coronavirus research done at that same Wuhan lab was dangerous and that the possibility of an accident was higher than it should have been.

Governor of US state of Arkansas passes law banning almost all abortions
[France24] The US state of Arkansas Tuesday passed a law banning abortion even in cases of rape or incest, in a move supporters hope will push the Supreme Court towards overturning its landmark 1973 ruling protecting abortion rights nationwide.

The only exception to the Arkansas law is "to save the life of the mother in a medical emergency," announced Asa Hutchinson, the governor of the southern state known for its Christian conservatism.

Hutchinson said he signed the law due to his "sincere and long-held pro-life convictions," adding that "it is the intent of the legislation to set the stage for the Supreme Court overturning current case law."

The Arkansas law will not come into force before the summer, and the powerful ACLU civil rights organisation has already announced that it will challenge it in court.

Abortion divides the American population, with strong opposition especially among evangelical Christians.

Biden sued by 12 states over climate executive order: 'Enormous expansion of federal regulatory power'
[FoxNews] Lawsuit argues that Biden does not have the authority to set a 'social cost' for greenhouse gases.

A coalition of 12 states is suing President Biden's administration over a climate executive order that they claim has the potential to have a serious economic impact across the country through the expansion of federal regulatory power.

The suit, which is being led by Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, was filed on Monday. State attorneys general from Arkansas, Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah also joined the action.

It alleges that Biden’s Executive Order 13990, titled "Protecting Public Health and the Environment and Restoring Science to Tackle the Climate Crisis," does not have the authority to issue binding numbers for the "social cost" of greenhouse gases to be used in federal regulations.

State attorneys general from Arkansas, Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah also joined the [Missouri] action.
The breakdown of the social costs shows $269 billion for carbon dioxide, $990 billion for methane, and $8.24 trillion for nitrous oxide — totaling approximately $9.5 trillion, according to the lawsuit, which cited interim values determined by an interagency working group that was created by Biden’s order.

Schmitt said that those potential regulations will stifle manufacturing and harm agriculture in Missouri, where state figures show that hundreds of thousands of people work in those industries.

"Under President Biden’s executive order, which he didn’t have the authority to enact, these hard-working Missourians who have lived and worked this land for generations, could be left in the dust," Schmitt said in a written blurb.

But the suit claims that the impact from the $9.5 trillion "social cost" of greenhouse gases will stretch farther than just Missouri.

"In practice, this enormous figure will be used to justify an equally enormous expansion of federal regulatory power that will intrude into every aspect of Americans’ lives— from their cars, to their refrigerators and homes, to their grocery and electric bills," the suit states.

The lawsuit argues that Biden’s order does not have the authority to set values for the social costs of carbon, methane, and nitrous oxide that will be used by regulatory agencies.

"It will be used to inflict untold billions or trillions of dollars of damage to the U.S. economy for decades to come," the suit states.

In claiming that Biden’s order cannot set these values, the suit claims that the action violates the separation of powers, "the most fundamental bulwark of liberty."

‘Negligent Handling of Dynamite’ Kills at Least 20 98 in Equatorial Guinea
Now we know.
[Breitbart] A string of huge explosions destroyed a military base in the Equatorial Guinea city of Bata on Monday, killing up to 20 people and causing over 600 injuries. According to President Teodoro Obiang, the earth-shattering kabooms were caused by "negligent handling of dynamite."

"The impact of the earth-shattering kaboom caused damage in almost all the houses and buildings in Bata," Obiang said. Photos from across the city showed rooftops ripped off houses and buildings severely damaged by the shock waves.

The Defense Ministry issued a statement that claimed the earth-shattering kabooms were caused by ammunition exploding due to a fire in a weapons depot. Obiang said the fire was due to "stubble-burning by farmers in their fields," while "the negligence of a unit charged with the care and protection of stores of dynamite and explosives" contributed to the blast.
An Nahar adds:
The toll from accidental explosions that rocked a military camp in Equatorial Guinea and the surrounding area rose sharply on Monday to 98 dead and 615 wounded, the vice president said.

The blasts on Sunday, involving ammunition stocks and explosives at the camp in the country's economic hub Bata, devastated buildings at the compound and countless houses in surrounding residential areas.

"At the moment, we deplore 98 dead and 615 injured," Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue wrote on his Twitter account.

Defiant Piers Morgan defends freedom of speech after quitting GMB
[Mail On Line] Piers Morgan today doubled down after quitting Good Morning Britain over his criticism of Meghan Markle calling her incendiary claims to Oprah about the Royal Family 'contemptible' and declaring: 'I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth' as it was claimed the Duchess of Sussex went to ITV and complained.

Speaking outside his West London home Mr Morgan told reporters: 'If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.'

He added: 'I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible', before revealing that he left on the day more people watched GMB than its BBC rival, five years after Piers transformed the ITV ratings flop. He tweeted later: 'Good Morning Britain beat BBC Breakfast in the ratings yesterday for the first time. My work is done'.

In another extraordinary twist, it was claimed by the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian that Meghan made a formal complaint to ITV about Mr Morgan. The broadcaster, who paid £1million to show the Oprah interview, did not deny the claim and representatives for the duchess declined to comment.

Biden North Korea review expected 'in next month or so' - US official
Capitulation Central Diplomacy
[Al-Rooters, via JPost] The Biden administration's review of its policy towards North Korea is expected to be completed "within the next month or so," a senior official of the administration told Reuters on Tuesday while declining to say what direction it might take.

The new administration, which took office in January, announced the review following former President Donald Trump's unprecedented engagement with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which failed to persuade Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.
Just like every other Admin before, including your own, Joe. You remember that, don't you? Don't you?
"We are involved and engaged in a highly intense strategic review. Our expectations are that it will be done in within the next month or so," the official said.

Biden's Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the approach to North Korea could involve more sanctions or unspecified diplomatic incentives.

The senior administration official said the US officials involved in the review had been engaged with diplomacy in one manner or other since the mid 1990s.

"Our expectations are probably very much shaped by previous experiences," he said, while noting "some interesting dynamics about the previous, the most immediate, period."

"I think we want to explore a variety of different things," he said without elaborating on the content.

The official said North Korea would be among the topics discussed at a first summit of the Quad group of nations - the United States, Japan, India and Australia on Friday. It will also be a topic when Blinken and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin visit Japan and South Korea later this month.

The Pentagon expressed concern last week about a UN report indicating possible preprocessing of nuclear fuel for bombs by North Korea, and said such activity could raise tensions with Pyongyang.

A confidential UN report seen by Reuters last month said North Korea developed its nuclear and ballistic missile programs throughout 2020.

#2  All part of The Great Playalong.

-Don't know, or won't say, who is compiling 'policy'.

-every time used it arrogates the election was on the up and up and the voting process is fine.

-when everything goes to shit they can retire the name and blur the actions taken.

-to keep the willfully ignorant, willfully ignorant.

To me, this is a lot to happen in a short amount of time, which would indicate extensive planning, perhaps dusting off the wish lists for the Hillary! administration - who in her own right wasn't quite right physically or mentally at the time - so the question would be how to brand it according to who was 'elected'; the branding of it all.

I'm not sure how they plan on handling the giant personality vacuum left open by the greatest politician in world history, the one who bested a seemingly unstoppable President Trump, with a potato with strange eyes and an incredibly unlikable harlot whose problem, ironically, is she capable of handling a mouthful.

Except, of course, shut up go along or else.

Some big egos involved here. Biden's SOTU was going to be the broadcast 'news' red carpet event where they all high five each other over the hoist, and what they will get will be deflating, embarrassing, and indefensable.

‘This Was A Bloodbath’ - Liberal Journalists Outraged After Huffington Post Fires 1/3rd Of Its Staff
If you've ever wondered how sick these hard left Marxist motherfuckers are, you only need to see how they treat each other in order to figure out how they would treat you and me. And that is 'not well'.
[Zero Hedge] - Just months after it was acquired by Buzzfeed in a fire sale, the Huffington Post - the once-pioneering Internet media property - has elicited an outpouring of criticism from the blue-check crowd after abruptly firing nearly 50 reporters, roughly one-third of the site's staff.
Learn To Code™
News of the layoffs first emerged on Twitter, as dozens of newly-fired journos tweeted about their misfortune, but was soon picked up by Defector, the cooperatively-owned media property started by former staff writers from Deadspin.
Another site I used to like reading 'til they became a bunch of lefty douchebags.
According to Defector, BuzzFeed founder Jonah Peretti announced Tuesday during an all-hands meeting that 47 HuffPo staffers in the US, including eight managers, would be losing their jobs in order to "drive long-term sustainability." Rival journos slamed Peretti, accusing him of traumatizing the laid-off journalists by forcing them to repeatedly refresh their inbox to see if they had received one of the dreaded pink slips. Anybody who didn't receive a notice by 1300ET was said to be "safe".

As if this wasn't undignified enough
not nearly enough for me - I want anal COVID swabs on the exit interviews!
, Peretti reportedly set the password for the mass-layoff meeting to "spr!ngisH3r3," an innocuous message that contrasted sharply with the situation as hand. One member of the Buzzfeed union described the firings as a "bloodbath".

"This is a bloodbath," a HuffPost staffer and union member told Defector. "It’s worse than the worst-case scenario for what any of us thought we would see when we got this announcement a couple hours ago. And the fucked-up way that they announced this notwithstanding, this is a just bloodbath for an award-winning international newsroom full of absolutely stellar journalists who didn’t deserve this." "The initial reaction is I can’t believe what little chance we were given to show what we can do to help this company," the staffer said.

Some of the reporters and their allies recounted the firing in terms that one might reasonably describe as "melodramatic."
Oh - it is massively over the top melodramatic internet cinema! Go forth, and marvel at the astounding level of ginned up outrage, alarm, pity, and all that passive - aggressive bullshit. It would require a heart of stone not to laugh.

For extra amusement, Bobby gives us the Huffington Post’s official take on events:
Deep Cuts Coming to Huffington Post

[HuffPost] BuzzFeed announced layoffs for the HuffPost newsroom on Tuesday, three weeks after acquiring HuffPost from Verizon Media in February.

Hillary Frey, the site’s executive editor, and Louise Roug, the executive editor for international, will be departing in a restructuring effort aimed at stemming financial losses.

It has been a particularly grim year for the media industry. The coronavirus pandemic undermined a business model already on shaky ground due to a massive shift in digital advertising spend toward tech giants Google and Facebook. Layoffs across the industry were on track to break records late last year, Variety reported.
But you helped remove the evil Trumpkins, so your sacrifice is a small one. Relatively.
BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti told staffers that the decision, which will affect 47 U.S. employees, including eight in management, was made in order to "fast-track the path to profitability" for HuffPost, enabling the company to break even this year and eventually turn a profit. HuffPost’s losses totaled around $20 million in 2020, he said.

"Though BuzzFeed is a profitable company, we don’t have the resources to support another two years of losses," Peretti said.

"We want to ensure the homepage remains a top destination on the internet," he added. "We also want to maintain high traffic, preserve your most powerful journalism, lean more deeply into politics and breaking news, and build a stronger business for affiliate revenue and shopping content."
Just with less staff.

#4  HuffPo has only been around since 2005 (Andrew Breitbart was one of the founders) but has had a lot of exciting history. On the good side they did a nice job covering wounded soldiers. On the bad side they 'sort of promised' people they would be paid for contributions then didn't pay them, they outright stole content, the published a long article in praise of Jeffrey Epstein (in the summer of 2019) and mislead their readers about Trump's ban on travel from selected countries.

Last year Germany enacted an IT security law setting high hurdles for makers of telecommunications equipment for next-generation networks, like China's Huawei, though the legislation falls short of a blanket ban on using products made by the Chinese state-owned manufacturer - as demanded by Washington.

Lawmaker Probes Biden Admin's Role in $1 Billion Ransom Payment to Iran
[Free Beacon] U.S. reportedly waived sanctions to facilitate payment to Tehran

A Republican lawmaker on the House Financial Services Committee is pressing the Biden administration to come clean about its suspected role in facilitating a $1 billion ransom payment to Iran as part of an effort to secure the release of a South Korean oil tanker that Tehran has been holding hostage.

Rep. Bryan Steil (R., Wis.) petitioned Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday to immediately provide him and other lawmakers with information about the reported U.S. role in waiving terrorism sanctions on Iran so that South Korea could complete the billion-dollar payment. South Korea has been locked in a dispute with Tehran over its January seizure of an oil tanker and its 20-member crew. Iran is using the tanker as leverage to pressure South Korea into freeing some $7 billion in oil revenues that are tied up in the country as a result of American sanctions.

"It would be gravely concerning if the United States waived terrorism-related sanctions on Iran to facilitate a ransom payment by South Korea without consulting Congress," Steil wrote, according to a copy of the letter obtained exclusively by the Washington Free Beacon.

The letter is the latest sign of mounting GOP frustration with the Biden administration’s diplomacy with Iran and efforts to cajole the country into negotiating over its growing nuclear program. Both the State and Treasury Departments have avoided briefing members of Congress, particularly on the Republican side, about their diplomacy and surrounding efforts to decrease pressure on Iran as part of a bid to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table. With Republicans in the minority, there is little they can do to block team Biden from rejoining the nuclear agreement with Iran, which former president Donald Trump abandoned in 2018. But members like Steil say Congress deserves to be fully briefed on these efforts.

In first, Tel Aviv votes to ban unvaccinated teachers from schools
[YNet] - The city of Tel Aviv on Wednesday in an unprecedented move decided to ban all unvaccinated school and kindergarten teachers from entering educational facilities from next week.

The government in the past mulled passing a similar, nationwide legislation but it was ultimately put on hold after running into a series of judicial hurdles and a threat of a strike from Teacher's Union.

Tel Aviv, therefore, becomes the first city in the country to approve the contentious measure.

According to the decision, starting Sunday, all teaching staff at schools and kindergartens - as well as administrative workers - will be obliged to present a Green Pass at the entrance to the facility or a negative coronavirus test taken at least 72 hours prior.

France conducts first military exercises in space
[DW] La Belle France launched its first military exercise in space this week to evaluate its ability to defend its satellites and other defense equipment from an attack.

The exercises are a "stress-test of our systems," said Michel Friedling, the head of La Belle France's newly created Space Command, adding that they were "a first for the French army and even a first in Europe."

The exercise, codenamed "AsterX" in memory of the first French satellite from 1965, will be based on 18 simulated events in an operations room.

"A series of events appear and create crisis situations or threats against our space infrastructure, but not only this," Friedling told news hounds from the Space Command headquarters in Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
in southwest La Belle France.

During the drill, the French military will monitor a potentially dangerous space object as well as a threat to its own satellite from another foreign power possessing a considerable space force.

The scenario is based on a crisis between a state with space capabilities and another that has a military assistance agreement with La Belle France.

The new US Space Force and German space agencies are taking part in the French exercises which began on Monday and will last until Friday.

'MILITARIZING SPACE'
The French Space Forces Command, Commandement de l'Espace (CdE) was created in 2019 and is set to have 500 personnel by 2025.

Investments in the space program are set to reach €4.3 billion ($5 billion) in the same six-year period — a fraction of what is being spent by the US and China.

"Our allies and adversaries are militarizing space... we need to act," Defense Minister Florence Parly had said in 2019.

La Belle France also planned to develop anti-satellite laser weapons and to strengthen surveillance capabilities in an area that it believes could become a major theater of confrontation between powers on Earth.

POTENTIAL THREATS
In 2017, a Russian "spy-satellite" had tried to approach a Franco-Italian satellite in what Gay Paree called "an act of espionage."

Russia's Olymp-K attempted to intercept transmissions from the Athena-Fidus satellite which is used by both Italian and French armies for secure communications.

Last year, Washington accused Russia of having "conducted a non-destructive test of an anti-satellite weapon from space."

This week's military drill is part of the French government's strategy to make the country the world's third-largest space power.
