In South Africa, life imitates a movie...
[ZH] Dramatic dash cam footage from Pretoria, South Africa, shows the moment that the crew of an armored car narrowly escaped an attempt by armed robes to stage a heist.
Driver could be the next James Bond
The shocking video shows a pair of private security officers transporting cash in a bulletproof Toyota truck on April 22 before they suddenly come under attack by armed assailants.

For the first minute of the roughly three-minute-long video, the security guards can be seen routinely driving down a highway.

The vehicle then comes under fire as bullets can be heard slamming into the driver side of the car, with the window by the driver’s side shattering.

The driver, who maintains his calm and composure during the attack, manages to escape amid the traffic. He also seems to slam into one of the two vehicles belonging to the attackers.

"They’re going to shoot. They’re going to f**king shoot," the driver then says, urging his colleague to pull out the rifle and prepare to defend their lives.

As gunshots continue to ring out, the two drive silently as the tension builds. The driver then shouts to his colleague: "Phone Robbie, phone Josh! Ask them where they are."

Bronx judge RELEASES man, 29, who 'smashed windows of four synagogues'
  • [Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Jordan Burnette faces 42 charges he 'terrorized Riverdale's Jewish community'

  • New York's bail reform dictates that if nobody was hurt in the attacks the suspect should qualify to be released

  • But Bronx Judge Louis Nock classified some of the charges as 'hate crimes' and imposed $20,000 bail on the 29-year-old suspect

  • But just hours later, Judge Tara Collins granted Burnette supervised release

  • It is not clear why Burnette was called back to court and released Sunday night

  • Four synagogues in the Riverdale district of the Bronx were allegedly targeted by the rock-hurling suspect who destroyed windows and doors

  • The targeting of Jewish religious centers comes at a time when anti-Semitic hate crimes are at their highest levels in 40 years

Teen, woman targeted in NY Anti-Asian hate crime attacks
[NYPOST] Two Asian Americans were targeted in hate crimes in the Big Apple over the weekend — a 15-year-old boy who was called "Ching Chong" in Queens and then beaten and a 52-year-old woman who was nearly pushed onto subway tracks in Brooklyn, cops said Sunday. Both attacks happened Saturday and are being investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force, according to a police front man.

"What the f—k you looking at, Ching Chong?" one of the teens asked, according to cops.
The 15-year-old victim was sitting at 62-01 99th Street in Flushing when he was approached by a group of five teenagers around 3 p.m.

"What the f—k you looking at, Ching Chong?" one of the teens asked, according to cops.

The boy got up and asked the teens to leave him alone, but they instead began punching him in the head with their fists, police said. The victim was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital in stable, pH balanced condition.

Three of the teenagers — ages 18, 15 and 14 — were arrested and two were being sought, cops said. They were charged with misdemeanor assault and harassment, cops said. Hate crimes charges could be added later, cops said.

Juror in Chauvin Trial Makes Potentially Problematic Statements on Morning Show
[REDSTATE] There are questions now being raised about Juror #52 in the Derek Chauvin trial, reportedly Brandon Mitchell.

Mitchell has now come forward and given interviews on several shows.

Speaking to the "Get Up! Mornings" show with Erica Campbell on April 27, Mitchell spoke about his experience on the jury. During the interview, Campbell said that many people aren’t all that eager to do jury duty. She asked him about what message he would leave people about "saying yes to jury duty?"

That’s when Mitchell said something that could be problematic and potentially raise an issue on appeal.

"I mean it’s important if we wanna see some change, we wanna see some things going different, we gotta get out there, get out into these avenues, get into these rooms to try to spark some change," he said. "Jury duty is one of those things. Jury duty. Voting. All of those things we gotta do."

Now that’s obviously problematic because you’re not supposed to be sitting on a jury to "spark some change." You’re only supposed to be deciding guilty or not guilty based solely on the facts and evidence presented in the case, nothing else. Not whatever societal change that you may think needs to happen.

Mitchell also said while being questioned during jury selection that he recognized this case was "historic."

Not evidence or logic, either.

Riddle me this: How can a man on this earth possibly be guilty, at one and the same time, of unintentionally killing AND intentional killing?

Not even the Stalinist show trials perpetrated such an idiocy as charging their class enemies with both manslaughter and murder.

But an American court just convicted a man of these two mutually-exclusive charges.

The Inquisition was more scrupulous. Medieval trial by ordeal had more logic.

We are the world's laughingstock now.

Seattle chocolate shop fires employee who refused to serve cop
Hit ‘em back twice as hard, making corporate activism hurt.
[NYPOST] A Seattle chocolate shop employee was fired for refusing to serve a police officer last week, the store’s owner said in an about-face after initially backing the worker’s "freedom of speech."The cop was with a trainee when he dropped by a Chocolati Cafes shop in the Wallingford neighborhood, according to the head of the police union.

"They were met with a bit of hostility," Mike Solan president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, told Fox News.

Chocolati owner Christian Wong on Wednesday addressed the issue on the company’s Facebook page, saying "Although we do respect this team member’s freedom of speech, the actions in this instance do not represent our views as a company.

"We are actively working directly with this team member and the local precinct to create a more inviting, inclusive and cohesive community for all."

The post sparked backlash, going viral with more than 5,000 comments.

Two days later, Wong announced that the employee in question and the company decided to "part ways."

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune seeks to calm social anger
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday urged his government to open "a dialogue" with social partners to appease mounting social anger.

Unemployment at 15 percent, soaring prices and shortages of basic food items have all added to the turmoil caused by a deep economic crisis due to the fall in oil revenues and political deadlock since the popular Hirak pro-democracy uprising two years ago.

During a cabinet meeting, Tebboune ordered "a dialogue with different social partners to improve the socio-professional situation" of employees in the education and health sectors, a statement said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the precinct house, Sergeant Maloney wasn't buying it. It was just too pat. The whole thing smelled phony, kind of like a dead mackeral but without the scales...
firefighters and other civil protection personnel marched in uniform not far from the headquarters of the Algerian presidency.

Firefighters took to social media to say that police broke up the demonstration with tear gas.

On Thursday, Algeria released on probation Karim Tabbou, a leading opposition activist, after his arrest the previous day.

Tabbou, who was handed a one-year suspended sentence last year for "undermining state security," was charged on eight counts, including "slander", after he allegedly heckled an official during a funeral.

Tabbou and other government opponents have pledged to boycott upcoming polls.

The head of the electoral authority (ANIE), Mohammed Charfi, said this week that 1,730 lists — 818 party lists and 912 "independent lists" — had registered for the legislative elections in June.

But he said only 19 parties out of the 39 that had submitted their documents "meet the legal requirements."

The Hirak protest movement was sparked over president Abdelaziz Bouteflika's
...10th president-for-life of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and served on his third or fourth terms. When he announced for the fifth, or maybe it was the sixth, visibly doddering, a grateful nation rose up in its wrath and threw him out...
bid for a fifth term in office.

The ailing autocrat was forced to step down weeks later, but the Hirak has continued its demonstrations, demanding a sweeping overhaul of a ruling system in place since Algeria's independence from La Belle France in 1962.

Russian Foreign Ministry: the development of US missile defense provokes an arms race
Direct translation of the article
[REGNUM] The desire of the United States of America to develop a global missile defense system has led to serious security implications and triggered an arms race, including missiles. This was announced today, on May 3, in an interview with RIA Novosti by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

According to Zakharova, Russia has repeatedly drawn the attention of the United States to the fact that the unrestricted development of the United States' global missile defense system is very dangerous. However, the American side does not accept the Russian arguments in any way.

“At the same time, they reject the possibility of introducing any restrictions on their anti-missile activities and are deliberately increasing it, attracting more and more financial resources,” Zakharova said.

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the reports of the American media that the United States intends to allocate $ 18 billion for the project of creating and deploying promising missile interceptors that would replace strategic silo interceptor missiles.

Zakharova stressed that the building up of the American global missile defense potential leads to serious consequences in the field of security, as well as upsets the strategic balance of forces in the world and provokes an arms race, including missile ones.

#16  #12 The formal alliance is called the Shanghai Cooperative Association. You can look it up if you want.

I do. I did -- and I can't find a single analysis, by any reputable western institute or agency, of this oh-so-fearsome alliance.

Not one. Nothing at all in the last decade.

Rather curious, don't you think, for a supposedly major military alliance?

Wouldn't you expect dozens - hundreds, actually -- of serious in-depth analyses of this alliance'a capabilitys and intentions?

If it were something more than a bullshit PR stunt, that is... signifying nothing

Chipmaker TSMC eyeing expansion of planned Arizona plant
[Rueters] Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) (2330.TW), is planning to build several more chipmaking factories in the U.S. state of Arizona beyond the one currently planned, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, announced in May 2020 it would build a $12 billion factory in Arizona, an apparent win by the Trump administration in its push to wrestle global tech supply chains back from China.

TSMC is setting up a 12-inch wafer fabrication plant in Phoenix, and the facility is expected to start volume production in 2024, Taiwan's investment commission of the ministry of economic affairs, which approved the investment, said in December.

TSMC manufactures the bulk of its chips in Taiwan and has older chip facilities in China and the U.S. state of Washington.

‘Moral Evil': Pelosi's Archbishop Demands Pro-Abortion Catholic Politicians Refrain From Communion
[Daily Wire] Archbishop of San Francisco Salvatore J. Cordileone, whose diocese encompasses House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) district, released a pastoral letter Saturday condemning Catholic politicians who support what he described as the "moral evil" of abortion.

In an extensive document entitled "A Pastoral Letter on the Human Dignity of the Unborn, Holy Communion, and Catholics in Public Life," Cordileone laid out a case against abortion, but devoted a particular section to rebuking self-described Catholic political leaders that openly support abortion.

"Your Catholic ideals inspire you in your work to help those who experience discrimination, violence, and injustice, and you deserve the gratitude of your fellow Catholics and our nation for this service. But we cannot empower the weak by crushing the weakest," Cordileone wrote in part.

"If you find that you are unwilling or unable to abandon your advocacy for abortion, you should not come forward to receive Holy Communion. To publicly affirm the Catholic faith while at the same time publicly rejecting one of its most fundamental teachings is simply dishonest," he wrote.

"God has entrusted you with a prestigious position in society. You have the power to affect societal practices and attitudes. Always remember that you will one day have to render an account to God for your stewardship of this trust," he added.

Their dishonesty, duplicity and flawed character issues are certainly not limited to Archbishop Cardileone's abortion concerns. Hat tip to the man under the mitre.

#2  In the good old days, people like Pelosi would have been publicly excommunicated. These days, the best we can hope for is a private talking-to by the archbishop.
As I understand it, people like Pelosi who publicly and vociferously support abortion have already excommunicated themselves from the Catholic Church. Going to Communion is a grave sin (as is supporting abortion).
Full disclosure: I am Catholic.

#19  Scientists determined that six months is not enough time to prepare a spacecraft to smash into the asteroid and that a nuclear bomb... would not take the monster space rock down.

A some thoughts...
..Once Elon Musk gets done commercializing space, launching a rocket isn't going to be a big deal.
.. A nuclear explosion in a vacuum has no blast effect like it would in the atmosphere
.. We think of an asteroid as a big-ass rock, but recent missions suggest they are more likely to be big piles of gravel and boulders. Deflecting a rubble pile might be problematic.
.. If we ever get around to mining the asteroid belt, exactly the same technology would be useful for dealing with rogue asteroids.

#20  big piles of gravel and boulders

A big pile of gravel and boulders will mostly burn up in the atmosphere, unlike a big-ass dinosaur-killer rock.

#21  A big pile of gravel and boulders will mostly burn up in the atmosphere,

It depends on the meaning of 'big'. The asteroids are basically chunks of broken up planet and come in all sizes. Really big chunks, like the one that waxed the dinosaurs or formed Barringer Crater in Arizona make it all the way to the ground and convert their insane kinetic energy into an Earth-shattering KABOOM.

Smaller bits burn up harmlessly in the atmosphere, like our annual meteor showers. But you don't need to hit the ground to do damage. The Tunguska event appears to have been an air burst, wide devastation but no sign of a crater. Chelyabinsk, guestimated at 20 meters, exploded in the air and did a respectable amout of damage. Ryugu, target of a recent space mission, is about a kilometer in diameter.

Savage's Impulse Hog Hunter Featuring a Straight-Pull Bolt
[Hunt365] Savage Arms started off 2021 by launching the Impulse line of rifles, and the immediate buzz was all about the straight-pull actions. None of that up and back with the bolt on an Impulse—just give the Impulse’s bolt a pull right back towards the shoulder, eject the spent brass, push forward and you are ready to shoot again.

Savage touted the straight-pull feature as a key for faster reloads. So, I requested a Savage Impulse Hog Hunter chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor to see just how fast that straight pull actually was and to rate the rifle’s overall performance.

#1  Higher pressure cartridges could be a challenge. Gotta love a Savage, but I'll stick with Mauser style locking lugs for now.
Posted by: Besoeker || 05/04/2021 7:47 Comments || Top||

#2  I wonder if, when putting it in battery, it's possible to not move the bolt far enough forward to lock and not be aware of it. With a conventional bolt action, you know it's locked because you can't move the lever down at the end of travel unless you've got it all the way forward.
Anyway, still prefer side cockers - M1, M1A, like that.

#6  Sometimes people do things because they want to: Winchester Model 1887/1901 Shotgun."The Model 1887 was one of the first successful repeating shotguns. Its lever-action design was chosen at the behest of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, best known at the time as manufacturers of lever-action rifles such as the Winchester Model 1873. Designer John Browning suggested that a pump-action would be much more appropriate for a repeating shotgun, but Winchester management's position was that, at the time, the company was known as a "lever-action firearm company", and felt that their new shotgun must also be a lever-action for reasons of brand recognition."
