#8  Dane-Geld, by Rudyard Kipling
IT IS always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: –
"We invaded you last night – we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: –
"Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: --

"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!"

They have invited the barbarians within their walls and now want some sucker to magically make them go away...

#10  I seem often to pay Danegeld to buy off thugs who are threatening people that I am not acquainted with in places where I don’t even live. I am paying off shakedowns at the city, state and national level. Internationally, I have been paying off Ukraine for a decade and resumed paying off Iran recently. It sort of sucks to be a citizen of the most powerful country on Earth.

Top cop Gideon Cody was investigated over claims of sexual misconduct before entire police force raided Kansas newspaper - leaving owner Joan Meyer, 98, feeling terrorized before she died 'mid-sentence'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • The Marion County Record began investigating the police chief Gideon Cody, 54, following tips that he had been accused of sexual misconduct

  • Cody and his entire department raided the office of the newspaper: the 98-year-old co-owner was terrified and aghast, and died the following day

  • The police department justified the raid by saying it was in response to another story about a possible illegal liquor sales, with 'identity theft' of evidence

Four arrested for beating, kidnapping, caging woman
[MSN] Deputies in Orange County, Florida, arrested four people after they allegedly kidnapped a woman and forced her inside a dog cage in a backyard shed.

The incident came to a close around 2 p.m. Saturday when the woman, said to be in her 40s, escaped and was frantically knocking on doors and windows in search of help. Neighbors came out to the woman’s aid and called 911. Deputies responded and rescued the woman, who was suffering from minor injuries.

Arrested were: Kevin Holmes, 21, Cortez Jackson, 39, Monica Reed, 37; and Damon Tromp, 19. According to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime, they "did forcibly confine, abduct or imprison the victim against their will [for] the purpose of inflicting bodily harm or terrorizing the victim."

The suspects forced the woman inside of a car at gunpoint and tied her hands together with a cord, the affidavit says. They then allegedly took her to a home where they further restrained her by binding her hands and feet together and covering her mouth with duct tape. Reed also pistol-whipped the victim, deputies allege.
Their timing was bad, as the Soros backed prosecutor in Orange County was just tossed out of office by DeSantis.

#2  ...Not sure if it was covered here at the 'Burg, but a week or so back there was a horrifying story about one of the Sherpa guides who fell ill and collapsed along the trail...and not a single one of those hundreds of climbers did anything to help him, so he died there. There's pics/video of climbers walking past him.

The Nepalese are of very mixed feelings about Everest tourism - on the one hand, it is an important source of revenue for a nation that unfortunately has damned little else to offer. On the other hand, most of the Everest tourists treat the place like a private campground that somebody else has to clean up, and they often treat the Sherpas with the same attitude.

Were I king for a day, Everest would be off limits for most of the time, and then access would be very tightly controlled.

'Argentina's Trump' takes shock lead in country's primary elections: Far-right populist wants to legalise selling human organs and says climate change is a lie
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • 52-year-old economist won largest share of vote in open primaries on Sunday

  • His rise ahead of October's elections comes amid 116% inflation in Argentina

Argentina's presidential election race has an unpredictable X factor: Javier Milei, candidate of the Liberty Advances coalition, a fiery and wild-haired libertarian who belts out rock songs to his supporters, calls his political opponents 'thieves' - and believes climate change is a lie.

The 52-year-old economist won the largest share of the vote in open primary elections on Sunday, shaking up the race to become the country's next president.

In addition to his larger-than-life persona and denial of climate change, Milei - an admirer of former U.S. President Donald Trump - has declared that Argentina's Central Bank should be abolished and argued the sale of human organs should be legal.

He has shot from relative obscurity a few years ago to now having a real shot at the South American country's presidency, with his combative, rock-style rallies appealing to voters angry at 116 per cent inflation and rising poverty.

He has pledged to 'blow up' the political status quo, shutter the central bank, 'dollarise' the economy, and massively shrink the state - ideas that have resonated with many voters, especially the young, after years of economic decline.

'Milei is a phenomenon,' said Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America and Argentina programs at Washington-based think-tank the Wilson Center, adding that his success at Sunday's elections had rattled the two main political blocs.

'His plague-on-both-your-houses message resonates among voters fed up with traditional political parties. And there are legions of these voters.'

Milei's strong performance has turned the October election into a three-way scrap, challenging the governing Peronist coalition and the main conservative opposition grouping Together for Change, who came in close behind him in the primaries.

With around 92 per cent of polling locations reporting, Milei had around 30 per cent of the total vote, according to official results. The candidates in the main opposition coalition, Together for Change, were at 28 per cent and the current governing coalition, Union for the Homeland, had 27 per cent.

Whether or not he wins, his party will have significant sway in Congress and he will have a powerful platform for his unorthodox economic views, likely pressuring any government in power to shift to the right.

In his closing campaign event last week, Milei rocked into an arena, singing and surrounded by cheering fans. He has railed against the 'caste' of the political elite who he calls 'robbers' taking money out of voters' pockets.

'We are facing the end of the caste model,' he said after the primary election results.

'Today we have stood up to say enough to the model of decadence. Today we took the first step for the reconstruction of Argentina.'

His jubilant supporters chanted: 'We can feel it. Milei President!'

A former small-time rock musician and athlete, Milei opposes abortion and supports gun rights.

He has criticised worker-friendly labour laws as a 'cancer,' said the state is the 'basis of all problems,' and praised U.S. gangster Al Capone as a hero.

Milei's rise reflects a wider regional trend in recent years that has seen Latin American politicians from outside mainstream parties rise to prominence with pledges to break up the status quo.

'People are fed up with politicians,' said Adriano Gabriel Zoccola, a 31-year-old lawyer from Buenos Aires who supports Milei because of his economic proposals and plans to slash government spending and cut the number of ministries.

'If Argentina is going to have real change, something completely different has to emerge. I think that Javier is the right person,' added Zoccola, who said he had previously voted for Together for Change.

North Korea bars women from wearing shorts
[GEO.TV] North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
's strict ban on Western clothing has extended to shorts, even during the scorching summer months. However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
the enforcement appears to target women exclusively, according to local residents.

Authorities are reportedly cracking down on women who wear shorts, issuing them warnings and even arresting some, forcing them to sign pledges against wearing shorts again.

The fresh edict stems from a broader law enacted in 2020, aiming to curb "anti-socialist behavior," with shorts being considered a symbol of foreign and capitalist culture. This isn't the first time such measures have been applied asymmetrically, as a previous ban on public smoking was only imposed on women caught with cigarettes.

The move has stirred discontent among women in North Korea, who question the gender inequality inherent in this policy. The country is known for its stringent control over citizens' lives, including various restrictions on freedom and human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
. International organizations like Human Rights Watch have long criticized the government's suppression of liberties and its severe treatment of perceived opponents, who are often subjected to torture and forced labor in political prison camps.

Government Corruption
Two Princeton, MIT Scientists Say EPA Climate Regulations Based on a ‘Hoax'
[Epoch Times] "The unscientific method of analysis, relying on consensus, peer review, government opinion, models that do not work, cherry-picking data and omitting voluminous contradictory data, is commonly employed in these studies and by the EPA in the Proposed Rule," Mr. Happer and Mr. Lindzen stated. "None of the studies provides scientific knowledge, and thus none provides any scientific support for the Proposed Rule."

"All of the models that predict catastrophic global warming fail the key test of the scientific method: they grossly overpredict the warming versus actual data," they stated. "The scientific method proves there is no risk that fossil fuels and carbon dioxide will cause catastrophic warming and extreme weather."

Many who have fought against EPA climate regulations have done so by arguing what is called the "major questions doctrine," that the EPA does not have the authority to invent regulations that have such an enormous impact on Americans without clear direction from Congress. Mr. Happer and Mr. Lindzen, however, have taken a different tack, arguing that the EPA regulations fail the "State Farm" test because they are "arbitrary and capricious."

"Time and again, courts have applied ’State Farm’s’ principles to invalidate agency rules where the agency failed to consider an important aspect of the problem, or cherry-picked data to support a pre-ordained conclusion," they stated. The case they referred to is the 2003 case of State Farm v. Campell (pdf), in which the Supreme Court argued that "a State can have no legitimate interest in deliberately making the law so arbitrary that citizens will be unable to avoid punishment based solely upon bias or whim."

"At the current concentrations of CO2, around 400 parts per million, it decreases the radiation to space by about 30 percent, compared to what you would have if you took it all away," Mr. Happer said. "So that’s enough to cause quite a bit of warming of the earth, and thank God for that; it helps make the earth habitable, along with the effects of water vapor and clouds."

"But if you could double the amount of CO2 from 400 to 800, and that will take a long time, the amount that you decrease radiation to space is only one percent," Mr. Happer said. "Very few people realize how hard it is for additional carbon dioxide to make a difference to the radiation to space. That’s what’s called saturation, and it’s been well known for a century."

A report by Cornell University states that "more than 99.9% of peer-reviewed scientific papers agree that climate change is mainly caused by humans, according to a new survey of 88,125 climate-related studies."

But Mr. Happer argues that consensus is not science, citing a lecture on the scientific method by renowned physicist Richard Feynman, who said, "if it disagrees with experiment, it’s wrong."
*Snicker*
"Science has never been made by consensus," Mr. Happer said. "The way you decide something is true in science is you compare it with experiment or observations. "It doesn’t matter if there’s a consensus; it doesn’t matter if a Nobel Prize winner says it’s true, if it disagrees with observations, it’s wrong," he said.

"And that’s the situation with climate models. They are clearly wrong because they don’t agree with observations."

GOP Presidential Candidate Says US Commitment To Taiwan ‘Will Change' Once We No Longer Need Their Semiconductors
[Conservative Daily News] Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said Monday that American commitments to Taiwan "will change" when the country gains "independence" from foreign-made semiconductors.

"I’m being very clear: Xi Jinping should not mess with Taiwan until we have achieved semiconductor independence, until the end of my first term when I will lead us there," Ramaswamy told talk show host Hugh Hewitt in a Monday interview. "And after that, our commitments to Taiwan, our commitments to be willing to go to military conflict, will change after that, because that’s rationally in our self-interest," he added.

Ramaswamy called for the United States to "declare independence" from China in February. Imports of goods and services from China by the United States reached $450.4 billion in 2020, according to the United States Trade Representative, with electrical machinery composing $111 billion of the imports while $97 billion came from machinery, leading to a $310.3 billion trade deficit.

"There are two reasons why China wants to annex Taiwan. One is to squat on the semiconductor supply chain so they can exert leverage over the United States of America. That’s not happening on my watch. I’d take a firm position on that," Ramaswamy told Hewitt. "But the second reason why is that they have unfinished nationalistic business dating back to their civil war in 1949. And if that’s the sole basis for Xi Jinping going after Taiwan after we have semiconductor independence, then you know what? I am not going to send our sons and daughters to die over that conflict."

#4  Vivek looks to have said some true things that most Americans won’t understand. He blended that pinch of spice into a cup of pure fantasy - the part about him being president, breaking from China and moving chip manufacturing back to the US. 30 percent of Americans think Taiwan is a sticker and couldn’t isolate it to a hemisphere. China now owns a significant percentage of our real estate, business, infrastructure and most of our politicians. In the debates Vivek does stand a decent chance of making guys like Asa Hutchinson look silly and out of touch. That would be useful in election years where the debates were relevant.

#6  The foolishness of a fair weather friend like this is that he disregards the future potential of people like the Taiwanese. He thinks they're only good for the current generation of semiconductors and that is very difficult to believe. If they're genius enough to pump out the chips they have so far, there is no telling what they might do in the future if they can stay out from under the CCP boot heel. And why should the Taiwanese maintain any commitment to America if they know we'll abandon them the minute we don't need them anymore? Why should the Japanese, the Koreans or the Philippines for that matter?
