Britain
Steyn Understands...
The Choice

"When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, naturally they will like the strong horse." So said Osama bin Laden in his final video appearance two-and-a-half years ago. But even the late Osama might have been surprised to see the Spanish people, invited to choose between a strong horse and a weak horse, opt to make their general election an exercise in mass self-gelding.
Aha! now I know why the birthrate is so low!
That's how I began my Telegraph column on March 16th last year - five days after the Madrid bomb, two days after the Spanish election. The choice for the British people today is whether to be the Spaniards post-Madrid or the Australians post-Bali. Anyone who knows Britain knows the citizenry don't incline naturally to appeasement, but anyone who knows their political elites knows the same cannot be said quite so clearly for their governing class.
Yup! Galloway is contorting like a pretzel!
... After the initial shock of stumbling over the truth, what will Britain do? Go back to the Bob Geldof agenda or avenge her dead?
I think the gelding should be performed at some of those radical mosques...

Home Front: Politix
Five Years Later and They Still Think They Won
November 7, 2000. That was the day their reign ended. Sure, they maintained a death grip until January 20th, but it was over. The American people had spoken.

In the political version of roe-sham-bo, paper beats rock, scissors beat paper and Red beats blue.

Red gets to call the locker room of the team that wins the big game (don't say Sooper Bowl or the En Eff Ell will sue you). Red gets to name Walter Reed Army Medical Center as his primary care provider. Red gets a nice vacation cabin in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland and Red gets to name Supreme Court justices.

Not blue. Blue doesn't have a vote. Why? Because blue lost. In fact, blue lost bad.

You would have a hard time telling that blue lost by the way blue behaves. Blue struts around demanding things. Blue demands that Red name someone just like the justice that is leaving the bench.

Knowing how much blue likes to think they still have a say, Red called a few blues and said that he would keep them informed. Blue didn't care for this much (remember that blue still thinks that blue beats Red). Blue Durbin said he "stressed the importance of finding a nominee in the political mainstream." "To be meaningful, consultation should include who Red is really considering so we can give responsive and useful advice," blue Senator from a really blue state Kennedy said.

In Las Vegas on Wednesday, blue Senator from a Red state Harry Reid chided some people who are Red for criticizing Attorney General Alberto Gonzales while Big Red was overseas, saying, "People here have gone a little too far." Blue Reid voted against Attorney Gonzales' confirmation earlier this year. Blue really hates the words "Attorney General" in front of the word Gonzales.

After voting like a cartel to stop several of Red's Appellate Court choices, blues are demanding that "The" Red consult with them before announcing a nominee.

Have you ever noticed that the blues still think they won? Seriously.

Blue Senator from a Red state Ben Nelson said that Red's "No. 1 goal should be getting a good jurist who won't be an activist judge" and that they would talk more once Red makes it back to Washington.

Red isn't in Washington because he is at the G8 Summit in Scotland. Red is there because Red won. Blue is in Las Vegas. Lots of people who lose end up in Las Vegas. Or, is it lots of people who end up in Las Vegas lose? Anyway, blue is in Las Vegas and Red is at an important meeting in Scotland with other people who won.

The Circus Comes to Town
Among the most enthusiastic people in Washington when news of Justice O'Connor's retirement surfaced had to have been North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole. Senator Dole is chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and she is following two blockbuster cycles for the committee under the leadership of Virginia's George Allen in 2003-2004, and Majority Leader Frist in 2001-2002. The Center for Responsive Politics credits Allen's team with raising $78,980,487 in his 24 months, for an average monthly take of about $3,300,000. Previous cycles are pre-McCain-Feingold and thus difficult to compare, but the data available for the first five months of 2005 from the FEC suggest that Senator Dole is exceeding the performance of Allen, with $16,867,661 raised--a monthly clip of more than $3,373,000. And that was before the NRSC added more than $9 million in proceeds from the "President's Dinner" in mid-June.

A solid majority in the Senate helps the GOP, of course, as does President Bush's willingness to help raise the funds. But in a cycle including raising money for Rhode Island's Lincoln Chafee--who voted against the war, did not vote for President Bush, and has voted against many solid judges--Dole cannot count on grassroots enthusiasm to keep the small checks coming.

The coming Supreme Court showdown changes all that, which is why I expect some combination of Judges Garza-Luttig-McConnell-Roberts to provide the two nominees that will probably be needed. Time and again President Bush has proven that his political and policy judgments are exactly the sort to rally the grassroots, and a double SCOTUS vacancy would provide not just the perfect opportunity to follow through on his campaign pledges concerning judges, but also to energize a somewhat sullen group of activists disappointed by the Senate's glacial pace.

Joining Dole in hoping for the sort of nominees that can awaken enthusiasm for increasing a Senate majority are front-running GOP candidates for various Senate seats: Mark Kennedy in Minnesota, Dino Rossi in Washington State, Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, West Virginia Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, and a couple of Florida challengers to incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. Would-be Republican senators in New Jersey, Michigan Tennessee, and Nebraska are also hoping for the right set of Supreme Court nominees, as must be incumbents Rick Santorum, Jim Talent, Jon Kyl, and John Ensign, among others who will benefit greatly from a defining set of hearings on the future of the Supreme Court.

The first half of 2005 saw the Democrats embark on a Thelma-and-Louise ride with Howard Dean at the wheel, and any number of senior Democrats taking turns riding shotgun, most recently with Nancy Pelosi announcing that the war in Afghanistan is over. Any hope of corralling the party's furiously flapping left wing went out the window with the announcement of O'Connor's retirement. The party would be best advised to quietly and responsibly pose the ordinary questions and find a way to quickly confirm the nominees as they tack their long way back to the center. But interest groups such as People for the American Way, Alliance for Justice, and MoveOn.org will have none of that, and the lefty blogs will fuel their collective frenzy.

Another center-stage appearance of the Michael Moore Democrats is on schedule. The GOP candidates in 2006 could not have hoped for a better opening act to the campaigns ahead. The Judiciary Committee proceedings will be broadcast from start to finish, and though the Democrats will think this a boon to their cause, it won't be long until the reality of prolonged exposure to Leahy, Kennedy, Biden, Schumer, and--especially--Durbin sinks in.

It is going to be a wonderful summer and early fall.

Once Again, Hollywood Stretches Credulity
BY JAMES LILEKS
Here we go again. Showtime will run a series called "Sleeper Cell," about an American Muslim who infiltrates a terrorist cell. He's an African-American, not Arab-American. The cell's members are a Frenchman named Christian, an Egyptian-American, a white rich American, and a Bosnian. There was probably a Hmong Muslim terrorist, but he tested poorly with focus groups.

Frenchmen. Bosnians. White boys. No Saudis?

Please. Who do the producers think the Marines are fighting in Iraq?

Oh, it's entirely possible that the real secret weapon of Islamist terrorism is disaffected Gauls, and someday Jacques Chirac will blow the Louvre to protest infidel cheese tariffs. It's also possible that pigs, given an aerodynamic profile and a nuclear-fueled jetpack, will break the Concorde's transatlantic speed record.

It's come to this: Hollywood confronts jihad and gives us "Tommy," a "Causasian, all-American rich kid who reinvents himself as a Muslim extremist."

Those kids today with their wacky reinventing, skullcaps on sideways, wearing their bomb belts hanging down so you can see their drawers. Yes, most all-American kids with lots of money can't see a hot sports car parked in front of a restaurant without wishing it would totally explode and like, completely kill all the hot chicks inside. If that's the true face of the threat, start rounding up the junior Kennedys and building them a wing at Gitmo. Something with a field so they can play touch football.

And now, to state the grindingly obvious: No, we don't need a series that shows Muslims as wide-eyed throat-slitters in headscarves and robes with green blood and vampire teeth. But to make the sleeper cell a multicultural affair not only strains credulity, it denigrates Islam. It suggests there is something intrinsic to the faith that attracts whackjobs from all walks of life. And it inverts truth, if such a thing matters.

The face of modern Islamist terrorism is mostly Arab. There are the Persian paymasters, of course, but the blokes doing the heavy lifting are mostly draw from Arab lands. Apparently it's unhelpful to note this in polite company. Or on soundstages. It's the elephant in the tent. And he's got a bomb!

Arabs aren't genetically predisposed to death cults; every shade of humankind has its turn at that wheel. In fact, one of the interesting aspects of the dead-ender car-bomb war in Iraq is the way it pits non-Iraqis against Iraqis who want a civil society. Normal workaday Iraqis want to vote, have a government, police, newspapers, fresh milk, safe streets, the promise of a better tomorrow, lower auto insurance rates, etc. Who's opposing them? Nasty local brutes who want Baathist fascism or god-besotted maniacs imported to build a theocracy one beheading at a time. They're not pouring in from Finland, and surely that fact bears noting.

One could safely say that Islam, as interpreted by a troublesome number of Arabs, is the present problem. So casting "The Sleeper Cell" as a multi-culti group is like making a World War II movie in which all the Yanks have German names and the Nazis are redheaded Irishmen.

You can only conclude that the producers are afraid. Afraid of the backlash from advocacy groups that blast out a billion e-mails whenever a terrorist on a TV show isn't a paper-white rawboned Okie boy; afraid of frowns from the uppercrust Hollywood peers who say ixnay-on-the-Arabay angle lest it play into the hands of Bushy McChimphitler. Afraid that mouth-breathing Red Staters will watch the show, grab a torch and head for the nearest mosque. (You know, the way Showtime's other hits "The L Word" and "Queer as Folk" led to massive outbreaks of homosexuality.) No, it's much more interesting to make "The Sleeper Cell" a layered, nuanced thing.

But you wonder. Which group is more ethnically varied: a real sleeper cell or the people who died on Sept. 11? What says more about our times, our land, our world: a show that has a make-believe Gallic Muslim named "Christian" or an account of the panoply of humanity that perished when the walls fell?

As Jack Nicholson said in a movie: They can't handle the truth. They don't even want to pick it up.

#5  Radical Islam teaches impressionable youths to take by force or resort to force to get everything they want in life, and NOT to compromise or work to build your own paradise here on earth. How is Radical Islam going to build/empower modernity in the Muslim world when it refuses to reform the top elites while sending young men to die in suicide attacks? Suicide attacks are mostly a political weapon, with old men ruling at the head while the few younger men -read, future competitors - violate the Quran by blowing themselves up: the crusty old guy Generals gloriously lead a so-called ARMY OF ISLAM that exists only on paper, or at the local police forensics-mortuary lab. Like the Socialists and Commies, the answer to Failed and Failing, non-modern, underdeveloped, and regressive Islam is more despotic Regulation, more Controls, more Bureaucracy, more Super- and Hyper-Government, .........................
..................more and new "justified" anti-democratic Local, National, Regional, International, and now Global Despotism and Totalitarianism, where 'free trade' is only that regulated limited commerce between weak Global sub-States as allowed by the ruling Global Central Govt/Bureaucracy = Mullahs! And like the former USSR and Red China, where women can have PH.D's but in reality at best only a few limited or controlled political or social positions, the Radical Islamists are fighting for a Global [Islamic]State/OWG where women can be punished, killed, or gang-raped - read, controlled - for the same reasons they are now. The Global Secular Socialist State = Global Islamic State = women are NOT allowed to de facto compete andor be independent regardless of merits or credentials. The Burqua Boyz, like the Socies and Commies, are only fooling themselves iff they believe harder Islam or harder Socialism will achieve Modernity.
