Conservatives and "That shoulder thing that goes up"

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

I don't have to tell very many folks at Rantburg.com, what New york Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy was talking about, and it wasn't a barrel shroud. It was a folding stock, not that any newly found revelation would damper her enthusiasm for her fascist US federal legislative proposals.

Maybe not having a clue about the basic parts of your standard semiautomatic rifle should disqualify you for even proposing legislation, but if you favor the 2nd Amendment argument shouldn't you have a clue about the basic impediment in gun sales from gun dealers who hold a Federal Firearms License?

What if it were a conservative politician or writer who made that remark? Would you be as sneering as I was or would you simply be stunned into wondering what was really going on? Would you be confident that any writer protesting his commitment to the US Constitution including the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (RKBA) would be able to hold up to the searing and oftentimes unfair arguments and red herrings media and the favorites place at their doorstep? I would argue unless you own a gun or have attempted to buy a gun through the federal firearms transfer system, you have no business advocating for RKBA.

What if I told you that several of the top bloggers at Ace O-Spades had not one clue what was really on the ATF Form 4473, including a question about drug use and addiction? Would you wonder what was really going on?

Last week on one of the podcasts of Ace O'Spades, that is what several of the bloggers admitted: that they did not know was on the Form 4473, the central issue in every gun transfer in the United States done in the federal firearms transfer system. That is but one question of several on the form, but this particular question became a topic because of Colorado's staggering into legalization of recreational use of marijuana.

Think about that revelation. Half of those writers, including at least one lawyer on that program did not know the basic information which should be at issue every time a leftist brings up gun control as either legislation, or in one of those teary eyed written protests presented in leftist media about the evils of EBRs (Evil Black Rifle). Sure, they know the basics: the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear arms, included in that right is ammunition and the private sales of firearms.

But what isn't apparent that they, and I would wager half of all the other conservative bloggers and likely 80 percent of paid writers for conservative publications have less than zero clue about the basic problem, the basic attack on the 2nd Amendment: Form 4473.

What if those conservatives were asked? Do you think, many of them living at or near the schwerpunkt of American federal power on the east coast, would admit the truth, or would they lie about it? Would it matter if they lied, as long as they pushed for RKBA issues?

Would you be confident that those writers knew that every mistake going back from the day were became an adult are an issue in preventing firearms transfers, and that those prohibitions are for the remainder of your natural life?

This goes to the heart of American politics. We are seeing politics transformed because so much money goes to leftist media institutions which as a collective want to change America into their own weird ideation in which only cops and soldiers have guns, and the citizens have protection from criminals and hostile political opponents based solely on political whims. We see this stuff blasted out at outlets such as Salon and Huffington Post several times a week. What do we get from conservatives in the same battle space and at the same time?

Bupkis.

You may remember last year when it was revealed that several writers, including Ben Domenech from Redstate.com has been induced to write nice things about Malayasia for a large amount of money, at a time which happened to coincide with the 2012 elections.

If you recall, when it was found they failed to register as an foreign agent, suddenly the US government -- which at the time was a harassing TEA Party startups for their views -- was accommodating, and understanding and let them backdate their application to conform with the law.

Really, nice of them don't you think?

And if it were me, I would by now be fending off advances in the inmate shower room.

The point in all this is that unless conservatives know whereof they speak, unless they experience first hand the joys and the utter failure of attempting to gain a firearm lawfully, the Second Amendment stands no chance in the next two years and even beyond.

Maybe we as commenters and regulars should start asking the uncomfortable questions to advocates: do you have a firearm, or at least will you try to buy one through the federal system, just once, just to see what it's like, just to see of some little niggling mistake from your distant past has finally caught up with you.

Maybe then those conservatives can start to change their own views and the views of readers.

#1  'Barrel shroud'....that's what holds the popcorn so you don't burn your hooves, right ?

#2  The only think Rep. McCarthy and folks like her need to know is that guns are icky. Form 4473? Can't we make that longer? More obtuse? Maybe use hieroglyphics?

Your point is well taken: commentators and the communitariat ought to know their subject before opining. That would, however, lead to a number of publications shutting down. Which might not be so bad.

#3  Being well-informed is never a bad thing. But. Knowing jot and tittle of the entire byzantine body of gun law, state by state, and every form, procedure and other requirement is asking a bit much. You could own quite a few guns, but if you bought them years ago or privately still never have seen this form.

If I had a group of 6th graders for 30 minutes to talk about guns, self defense, crime and the 2nd Amendment would I bring up Form 4473? Not a chance.

I'd say "no shit". Ace is a northwest blue-state "conservative" more interested in campaign consulting than in liberty.

Justice Department to prohibit agents from considering religion in counterror investigations
[Jihad Watch] Because who ever heard of Muslims being involved in terrorism? The very idea is preposterous! Why would anyone get the idea that counterterror surveillance was ever needed in Muslim communities?

"U.S. to Expand Rules Limiting Use of Profiling by Federal Agents," by Matt Apuzzo for the New York Times, January 15 (thanks to Linda Sarsour):

The Justice Department will significantly expand its definition of racial profiling to prohibit federal agents from considering religion, national origin, gender and sexual orientation in their investigations, a government official said Wednesday. The move addresses a decade of criticism from civil rights groups that say federal authorities have in particular singled out Muslims in counterterrorism investigations and Latinos for immigration investigations.

The Bush administration banned profiling in 2003, but with two caveats: It did not apply to national security cases, and it covered only race, not religion, ancestry or other factors.

Since taking office, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. has been under pressure from Democrats in Congress to eliminate those provisions. "These exceptions are a license to profile American Muslims and Hispanic-Americans," Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, said in 2012.

President George W. Bush said in 2001 that racial profiling was wrong and promised "to end it in America." But that was before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. After those attacks, federal agents arrested and detained dozens of Muslim men who had no ties to terrorism. The government also began a program known as special registration, which required tens of thousands of Arab and Muslim men to register with the authorities because of their nationalities.

"Putting an end to this practice not only comports with the Constitution, it would put real teeth to the F.B.I's claims that it wants better relationships with religious minorities," said Hina Shamsi, a national security lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union.
"Better relationships" trump national security, justice, and the rule of law.
It is not clear whether Mr. Holder also intends to make the rules apply to national security investigations, which would further respond to complaints from Muslim groups.
I believe one might safely assume he does.
"Adding religion and national origin is huge," said Linda Sarsour, advocacy director for the National Network for Arab American Communities. "But if they don't close the national security loophole, then it's really irrelevant."

In other words, she even wants it to be forbidden for Muslims are placed under surveillance in the interests of national security.

Ms. Sarsour said she also hoped that Mr. Holder would declare that surveillance, not just traffic stops and arrests, was prohibited based on religion.
Increased patrolling of so-called high-crime areas would obviously be characterized as 'surveillance'. Anyone see where this is going ?
The Justice Department has been reviewing the rules for several years and has not signaled how it might change them. Mr. Holder disclosed his plans in a meeting Wednesday with Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York, according to an official briefed on the meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity because the conversation was private.

Mr. de Blasio was elected in November after running a campaign in which he heavily criticized the Police Department's highly effective stop-and-frisk tactic, which overwhelmingly targets minorities and which a federal judge declared unconstitutional. The mayor and attorney general did not openly discuss when the rule change would be announced, the official said. A senior Democratic congressional aide, however, said the Obama administration had indicated an announcement was "imminent."
Nothing yet on Keystone, Benghazi, or the IRS.
The Justice Department would not confirm the new rules on Wednesday night but released a short statement saying that the mayor and the attorney general discussed "preventing crime while protecting civil rights and civil liberties."

In the past, Mr. Holder has spoken out forcefully against profiling of his people.

"Racial profiling is wrong," he said in a 2010 speech. "It can leave a lasting scar on communities and individuals. And it is, quite simply, bad policing -- whatever city, whatever state,
whatever planet."
Officials in the Bush administration made similar statements, however, which is why civil rights groups have eagerly waited to hear not just Mr. Holder's opinion, but also the rules he plans to enact. As written, the Justice Department's rules prohibit federal agents from using race as a factor in their investigations unless there is specific, credible information that makes race relevant to a case.
Rabies...? Who knows? Don't jump to conclusions. It could have been a walleye or a parakeet.
"Authorities may never rely on generalized stereotypes, but may rely only on specific race- or ethnicity-based information," the rules say........The rules cover federal law enforcement agencies such as the F.B.I. and the Drug Enforcement Administration. They do not cover local or state police departments.
Yes, the recent Boston Marathon bombing might [emphasis on might] have been proof of FBI compliance.
That is significant because Muslim groups have sued the New York Police Department over surveillance programs that mapped Muslim neighborhoods, photographed their businesses and built files on where they eat, shop and pray....
They only use lawfare because they know they can win. If you control the courts and the judges, you control the law.

#2  Are they all idiots in the DOJ? Who the hell do they think we have been fighting for the last 40+ years. Who do they think pulled off 911 Part I and Part II. Washington is worthless and dangerous to the American people.

#3  So exactly what Race is Islam?

Serious question someone should ask the big heads at the DOJ.

Islam is a religion - a C-H-O-I-C-E and should not be protected from criticism, negative comments, comparisons, OR PROFILING!

The DOJ profiles people based on *RACE* all the time (example: Knockout Game) under Holder. They also profile by political orientation and religion (being anti-conservative and anti-christian).

Michelle Malkin: Tamera Mowry Is Not Alone
A young black actress marries a young white journalist who works for Fox, and the actual racists coming out of the woodwork with their ugly, sneering invective. Mowry should know they're just a buncha bastards. Love knows no dividing line.

Michelle Malkin offers her words of comfort, but you should read the whole thing:

Time doesn't lessen the vitriol or hostility. Take it from someone who knows. "Oriental Auntie-Tom," "yellow woman doing the white man's job," "white man's puppet," "Manila whore" and "Subic Bay bar girl" are just a few of the printable slurs I've amassed over the past quarter-century. You wouldn't believe how many Neanderthals still think they can break you by sneering "me love you long time" or "holla for a dolla." My IQ, free will, skin color, eye shape, productivity, sincerity, maiden name and integrity have all been ridiculed or questioned because I happen to be a minority conservative woman happily married to a white man and the mother of two interracial children who see Mom and Dad -- not Brown Mom and White Dad.

Mowry's got the right attitude. She wiped away her tears and told Oprah that haters wouldn't drag her down. Brava. Live, laugh, think and love without regrets. It's the best revenge and the most effective antidote to crab-in-the-bucket syndrome.

#1  The original home of the Klan, Donkland. Today the home of the Black Klan (see - Black Panthers, Cult of Trayvon, Revs Jackson-Sharpton-Wright, etc) which demands racial hegemony and is intolerant of those straying from it. Can't upset a core constituency to satisfy its need to blame others for its own self destructive behaviors.

#2  More at the link.

Funny how the liberals show their true colors when talking about conservatives (or anyone else they hate). They really are against mixed-race couples.
