On March 30, Minnesota Timberwolves center Eddie Griffin was drunk and masturbating when he crashed his luxury SUV into a parked Suburban outside a store in Minneapolis, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday by the man whose Suburban was hit in the crash.
WCCO-TV obtained copies of 911 calls and store surveillance video of the incident, along with an accident report the police submitted to the state, reports WCCO-TV's Caroline Lowe. Several of the 911 callers that night said Griffin was drunk. One witness said Griffin told him he was watching pornography in a DVD player mounted on the dashboard of his Cadillac Escalade SUV when he struck a Chevy Suburban parked on University Avenue Southeast.
The location where Griffin crashed is located a couple miles from the Target Center where Griffin had played with his team several hours earlier.
Abed Hassuneh, who is the brother of the victim, said Griffin told him, "That he was masturbating himself going down that street. That's how the accident happened because he was not paying attention. He's paying attention to that video and all of a sudden he's shoveled somebody's car on the top of the sidewalk."
Interim Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan ordered an internal affairs investigation of the conduct of the two officers who responded to the scene, after WCCO-TV made Dolan aware of allegations about the incident. Key questions are why Griffin wasn't tested for alcohol and why the officers drove him out of the city to his home in St. Paul. Griffin also received tickets for not having a license and inattentive driving. Treated like a black Kennedy, call Patrick! what about an in-dash DVD? Legal in Mn? Not in most states. Nor is public masturbation ... except in the US Senate
Griffin's damaged SUV was towed to the Minneapolis impound lot.
Dolan told WCCO-TV he expects impartial policing. Dolan also said officers must get permission to leave the city. "Obviously, if somebody is drunk and they are driving we want that dealt with by the police officers of Minneapolis," Dolan said.
In the video, Griffin can be heard pleading with witnesses to not call police saying, "I can't go to jail." "Do you know who I am?"
The video also shows Griffin admitting he is drunk and doesn't have a driver's license. The video shows him struggling for minutes to put on his sweatshirt and offering to buy a car for the man who's SUV he crashed into in front of Santana Foods.
Griffin was not available for comment. When he was interviewed by reporters after the crash happened, he said he had dropped his cell phone as he drove.
The two officers involved in the incident, Daniel Anderson and Matthew Lindquist, have been with the Minneapolis Police Department since October 2001. The officers remain on duty pending the outcome of the internal investigation. this guy qualifies to be a judge should he leave the NBA

The owner doesn't understand. Under socialism, you own no property. It belongs to the state. They simply allow you to use the property because they're enlightened and generous. That someone else found use for what you labored for, thus expending the limited amount of time you have on this planet, is just another form of 'individual' redistribution. That the so called theives saved the bureaucracy the expense of basically doing the same should be considered by you a benefit.

STRASBOURG, FRANCE A doping scandal knocked Tour de France favourites Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso out of the race Friday and threw the world's most prestigious cycling event into chaos. The decision to bar Ullrich, Basso and others implicated in a doping probe in Spain also sent a strong signal that cheating, or even suspicions of cheating, will not be tolerated.
Tour director Christian Prudhomme said organizers' determination to fight doping was "total." "The enemy is not cycling, the enemy is doping," he said the day before the start of the Tour.
Riders being excluded will not be replaced, meaning a smaller field than the 189 racers originally expected. And that's not even counting the absence of American Lance Armstrong, who retired after winning his seventh straight Tour last year.

This is all fall out from the attacks on Lance last year. They went back and checked everyone and ol Lance was clean. They spent tons of money refining the process to try to find something in Lances blood but could not. What they did do was set themselves up with a better screening process and that nailed them. They are getting their just desert.

Vinokourov's team (Astara) also got the boot, so there go your top three GC guys, which is the only way a Frenchie (Moreau, doper, or Chavanel) has a bloody shot. Makes perfect sense to me.
Problem is, two Yanks - Leipheimer & Landis (even Hincapie, no climber he) are all better than those two guys. Remember that Moreau was

No doubt the only way the French can win at their sport is to eliminate the rest of the field. Not to worry though, I'm sure some young American will start winning and dominate like Lance did and Greg Lemond before him.
Too bad for Ullrich, the German, he waited so long for Lance to retire so he could win one.

I'm glad they continue to clean up this sport. The 103 year old Tour de France is an outstanding event, maybe the most remarkable athletic competition in the world. It's got everything: sprints, time trials, medium distance flat stages, and incredible mountain stages with descents over 50 mph on skinny tires, often in rain and fog. It's dangerous, with 50 bicycle pileups at 30 mph not uncommon. There are cliffs to ride over and stone walls to pile into. Armstrong once caught a bar on a spectator's bag and went down in an instant, along with the guy behind him. In the mountains the spectators are right out on the road and the wild crowd parts as the racers pass within inches of them. All of this is covered by cameras mounted on motorcycles, cars, and helicopters.
It's like running a marathon nearly every day for three weeks.
It can only be won by a team effort, yet the winner is an individual. Team strategy, tactics, bluffing, high technology, and year-round training are required to win.
This is one of those events that's much better on tv. The OLN channel has remarkably good live coverage, using four anchors, three of whom have been professional cyclists. They're extremely well informed, enegetic, and entertaining.
The preamble was won today by Hushovd, a Norwegian sprinter. Team Discovery's George Hincapie was only 0.7 sec behind him. And Phonac's Floyd Landis had a bad tire and was about eight seconds late to the starting gate! He finished nine seconds behind the winner!

Americans Start Strong at Tour de France
With the first Tour de France of the post-Lance Armstrong era rocked by one of the worst doping scandals in cycling's history, American riders may be in good position to take advantage of the depleted field.
On Saturday, George Hincapie lost by a split second to big Norwegian sprinter Thor Hushovd in the opening time trial of the sport's premier race. David Zabriskie placed third and Floyd Landis was ninth, making the United States the only country with three racers in the top 10.

Federal prosecutors are investigating "very serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud" in Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration, including allegations that employment was rigged at several state agencies in violation of laws that prohibit political consideration as a factor in most state jobs, according to a letter made public today from U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald said the federal government's investigation has "implicated multiple state agencies and departments" and said investigators also have "developed a number of credible witnesses" as part of their probe into state hiring practices under Blagojevich.
Abby Ottenhoff, a spokeswoman for Gov. 'Sonny Boy' Rod Blagojevich, released a statement today defending the administration's hiring practices. ``Among those we hired there were some bad apples who violated the rules. The systems we put in place in our first year helped ferret out this wrongdoing," Ottenhoff said. "We insisted on an independent Inspector General for precisely this purpose," she said. "We've acted on those IG recommendations up to and including termination, and where appropriate, referred them to the US Attorney for criminal investigation. We will continue pursuing those who would break the rules."

KARACHI - Police in Pakistans southern Sindh province have rescued a nine-year-old girl who was married off by her father to clear a debt for 400 kg (880 lb) of rice.
Both the father, Jan Mohammad, and her husband of four days, Abdul Sattar, a man of around 60, have been arrested and will appear in court on Saturday, a senior officer said. The marriage has taken place but the girl is underage, police officer Masroor Ahmed Jatoi in Jacobabad district, 480 Km (300 miles) north of Karachi, told Reuters on Friday. She was given as compensation by her father, so we are treating it as a criminal case, said Jatoi.
The girl, Wahida, has been sent for medical examination, and would be transferred to a care centre until a court decides where she will be best looked after.
Her father had stood as guarantor for a friend who bought the rice on credit, but when the debt put at 50,000 rupees ($833) was not paid, the trader demanded that Mohammad give his daughter in marriage to his elder brother as compensation, Jatoi said.
Human rights activist and lawyer Rashid Rehman said the law bars marriages of girls under 14 and boys under 16. The law has defined the ages clearly. There is also a law that prevents children and women from being given in any form of compensation to settle a dispute or blood feud, Rehman said, adding that the court could declare the marriage void.

The memorial service is set for Saturday, July 1, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Deschutes Fair and Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way, Redmond, Oregon 97756.
Family, friends, members of the community of Central Oregon and throughout the state are invited to attend as we pay tribute to one of Oregon's fallen soldiers.
Governor Ted Kulongoski will speak at the request of the family, as will U.S. Representative Greg Walden and Brig. Gen. Gregg Martin representing the 101st Airborne. Tucker's sister, Teyva Tucker will then speak on behalf of the family.
A procession wil follow the memorial service and go to the cemetery in Madras.
Full military honors will be presented at the graveside service to include: The Portland Highlanders Bagpipers; presentation of awards (Bronze Star, Purple Heart); Governor will present the flag of the State of Oregon; Gold Star Banner presentation; presentation by the Patriot Guard Riders; Blackhawk flyover; Honors team will fold flag for presentation to the mother Meg Tucker; rifle salute to honor the soldier and a solo bagpiper will play "The Hero". This will conclude the ceremonies.
A reception will be held at the Madras High School for family and friends and well wishers following internment.
An Irvine man and his former wife pleaded guilty Thursday to forcing a 12-year-old illegal immigrant from Egypt to work as their domestic slave. Under terms of a plea deal with federal prosecutors, Abdel Nasser Eid Youssef Ibrahim, 45, and his former wife, Amal Ahmed Ewis-abd Motelib, 43, each face up to three years in prison.
The girl, whose name was not released, was brought to the United States in 2000. Every morning she helped the couple's youngest children get ready for school, washed clothes, cleaned the house and prepared food. Following up on an anonymous tip, police in 2002 found the girl living in squalor in a 12-by-8-foot converted area of the family's garage. Ibrahim and Motelib, who were married at the time and have five children, had both slapped the girl at least once and told her that if police saw her outside their home alone, they would arrest her, prosecutors said.
The girl, now 16, is living with a foster family in Southern California and attending a public high school where "she is doing great," said Assistant U.S. Atty. Robert J. Keenan. She has received a green card granting her permanent residency.

They have to pay the girl $100,00 just to start, Nimble Spemble. There may well be large fines, too. And when they get out of prison (assuming they don't simply run, forfeiting bail and probably resulting in their property being sequestered or confiscated -- thoughts on this from Rantburg's legal eagles?) they'll be deported forever, losing the comfortable American lifestyle they're so fond of. Their children are not going to be happy about the changes, especially if they have to live with relatives back home until their parents can join them.
I agree with Uninter Whereting4376 -- this is as much an immigration enforcement issue as a slavery one. Homeland Security would be able to be much more effective if so much of their time wasn't tied up dealing with decades of re-filed paperwork for those trying to do things legally. Turn a coupld of newly minted Harvard MBAs lose on the situation, for goodness' sake!

Only thing that would even nearly be effective would be a kind of passive radio tag "Here-I-Am" like the kind the AKC uses for expensive show dogs, and then you run into a whole host of legal issues, plus it's not foolproof, you'd have thousands of back alley "Surgeons" cutting them out.

TW, don't disagree about the immigration aspect, but ifg 3 years is the max sentence, they'll be out in 18 months. I don't care if they are then deported, 18 months is too little for slavery. Because I bet there is a lot more of this going on. Especially with Saudis.

Several cases like that over the years here, mostly slaveholders from Africa & Middle East who held up fellow country girls (mostly) in domestic slavery; basically, they acted like if they still were in the old homeland. In fact, there's a french ngo against this trend. another benefit of multiculturalism and rampant unassimilated immigration.
