-Lurid Crime Tales-
Homeowner Pistol Whips Burglar With His Own Gun
A Red Bird (TX)-area homeowner turned the tables on a gun-toting burglar Wednesday night, taking the weapon away from him and beating him up with it.

The suspect, identified by police as 21-year-old Marquis D. Anderson, ended up in a local hospital.

"When the police got him, he wasn't able to talk," said Steven Flowers, a neighbor whose home was also burglarized. "He got beat bad. I wish it had been me [who delivered the beating]. I would have done the same thing."

Mr. Flowers, who lives on Greenspan Avenue near Interstate 35E and Camp Wisdom Road, arrived home shortly after 6 p.m. to find that his home had been burglarized. The burglar had kicked in a rear door and stolen jewelry and a handgun.

"I noticed the lights on in my house," said Mr. Flowers, who has lived there about eight years. "I could see a silhouette, peeking out of the window of my den. I left and called 911."

Police records show that the suspect fled that home and broke into a neighboring home in the 7600 block of Woodspan Drive. That homeowner, Prentice McKinney, arrived home to find his front bedroom light on, his front window busted out and a man looking out the window at him, records state.

Mr. Flowers said that Mr. McKinney went into the home through the window and confronted the burglar. Police said the suspect fired a shot at Mr. McKinney, but it hit a wall instead.

"He said by the time the guy realized he was in the house, he had already pounced on him and beat him up pretty bad," Mr. Flowers said. "He can't remember how he got the gun from him. He said he just had so much adrenaline pumping, he just kind of lost it."

The burglar had tried to steal two handguns and jewelry from that home, a report said.

When police arrived, they found the unconscious burglar in a pool of blood on the hallway floor.

Mr. McKinney had a cut to his right arm and was treated at the scene but told police he would take himself to the hospital to be checked out.

Another home on Woodspan Drive also was burglarized, police said. A cellphone taken from that house was recovered at the home on Greenspan Avenue.

Mr. Flowers said that his wife had passed away about eight months ago and that the thief had ransacked his home and stolen their wedding bands and a .38-caliber handgun. He said he got all of his things back but still felt disturbed and violated.

He said he felt the burglar got what was coming to him.

"He'll think twice," Mr. Flowers said.

In late November, Mr. Anderson was arrested on suspicion of burglary of a habitation. He was released from the Dallas County jail on $2,500 bail.

On Thursday, he remained in a local hospital in police custody. He faces at least one count of burglary of a habitation.

For which he gets three strokes with a damp noodle if he doesn't have a good lawyer.

How about assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, breaking and entering, possession of an unlicensed handgun, possession of a stolen weapon, possession of stolen goods, damage to property...

#3  See? See? The anti-gun people are right!

Criminals shouldn't carry guns because a victim will probably just take it away from the criminal and use it on him.

Oh, wait....

#6  Reminds me of the story here in the Atlanta suburbs this morning. Last night, a man broke into a woman's home (who has a 7 year old daughter). Amazingly (according to the radio report this morning), he stabbed her 20+ times, raped her several times, and had grabbed a shotgun and was going to kill her with it, when it jammed.

The result? The mother (who was interviewed) said, "I was determined he would NOT do to my daughter what he did to me!" She somehow got the knife away from him, and when he tried to pounce on her again, she held it up and he fell on it. DRT (dead right there)! The ultimate justice and his victim (who, again, had been stabbed over 20 times) lives to tell the story! I love it when justice is served like this.

#10  McKinney may need a good lawyer, even in Texas. He admits continuing to beat Anderson, even after he had taken the gun away such that he was no longer a threat, which could easily be called criminal assault, and even more easily called grounds for civil lawsuit. Safer to have just shot and killed the bastard while 'struggling for possession of the gun.'

Police hunt child armed robbers
Boys as young as 12 may have carried out an armed robbery at a shop in Stranraer, it is believed.
Police said the attack happened at Leafield Stores in the town's Woodland Road on Thursday afternoon.

Two people wearing balaclavas threatened the shopkeeper with what appeared to be a handgun.

Officers said the robbers made off with cigarettes and cash. They are thought to have made their escape from the area on two silver coloured mountain bikes.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Woman's Bra Saves Her From Bullet
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - One woman discovered on New Year's Eve that her bra could do more than lift and support when a falling bullet was halted by the bra strap on her left shoulder.
Now this is a true "Bullet Bra".
Debbie Bingham, 46, an Atlanta resident visiting family in St. Petersburg, said her gold bra slowed the falling bullet during the holiday celebrations.
I wonder if it was really gold or just the color. Sounds a lot like the "celebrations" that happen in the Middle East.
Her injuries may have been much more severe had it not been for her bra strap, said George Kajtsa, spokesman for the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Bingham says she was outside with her daughter and son, ringing in the New Year and viewing the local fireworks display when she felt a sharp pain in her left shoulder at 11:40 p.m.
"I thought it was a mosquito. Those things grow afully big around here."
It was Bingham's daughter, Solanda Bingham, 30, who first noticed the blood seeping through her mother's white shirt. "We were sitting at the picnic table and listening to music and my mom said, 'Ow,'" the daughter said.

The daughter said she looked over and saw the blood and shouted "My mother's been shot. My mother's been shot." The bullet was halfway inside of Bingham's bra, and the other half barely breaking the skin, Bingham later told WTSP-TV.

Someone had fired a gun into the air and as the .45-caliber bullet fell back to earth, Bingham was struck. Kajtsa described the wound as a "big scratch with bruising."
That explains it. A 45 doesn't have much velocity.
Bingham was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg where she was given five stitches. The bullet was lodged into the bra strap was only removed when doctors intervened and cut the bullet from the strap.

St. Petersburg police are still searching for the shooter to determine if Bingham was the target of the gunfire or if she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, Kajtsa said. Shooting a weapon inside the city limits is a misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to one year in jail, Kajtsa said.

As for Bingham, she said she is just thankful for her bra. "It was a very cheap bra. It wasn't very expensive, and I'd love to have a couple more of those bras," she told WTSP.

To Save Weiner Dog "Bosun", Woman, 80, Beats Off Three Boars On Dartmoor
(made you look, didn't it?)

An 80-year-old woman fought off three wild boar as they tried to savage her dachshund during a new year walk on Dartmoor. Rosemary Hamilton-Meikle told yesterday how she used her dog's lead to frighten two of the wild pigs away and hit the third on the snout with it.

The incident is the latest in a spate of brushes with wild boar on and around the moor in Devon, which has prompted police to issue warnings about them.

Mrs Hamilton-Meikle was walking her dog, Bosun, at Buckland Monachorum, near Plymouth, on the edge of Dartmoor, when he vanished into gorse bushes. She said: "I heard a terrible screaming noise and I thought he had got into a fight with some other dogs. I rushed into the bushes and found three wild boar with Bosun lying down on the ground in front of them. They must have tossed him and were coming in to attack."

Mrs Hamilton-Meikle, of Plymouth, admitted she had been terrified, but had been determined to save her dog. She swung Bosun's lead around her head, which sent two of the boar scuttling away. But a male boar stood its ground, a metre from the pensioner.

She said: "The dog lead has a heavy metal clip so I swung it again and caught him on the nose. Then I picked up Bosun, turned around and walked out. Fortunately, the boar did not follow. It's the first time I've seen the boar, though I know a man who was chased up a tree by them. I only saw three, but locals say there are up to 15 around Buckland Monachorum."

Another walker who was close by at the time said: "We could hear the pigs grunting. It was evil. They were only 10 yards from a pathway that walkers use. It could easily have been a child that was attacked. There should be warning signs up."

In the past year animal activists have released two lots of wild boar from farms in Devon and many of the animals are still at large. On New Year's Day, the same day as Mrs Hamilton-Meikle's encounter, a man and his two dogs were confronted by the animals on Dartmoor.

Pauline Boon, 36, a taxi driver from Buckland Monachorum, said she had seen wild boar worrying sheep recently. "I was driving past a field near the village when the sheep in it suddenly scattered," she said. "I stopped the taxi and saw a wild boar chasing the sheep - they were terrified."

Jo Barr, spokeswoman for the RSPCA in the south-west, said attacks on people were rare. In the past eight years there had only been two cases in Britain in which a boar made contact with a person, she said. "They are shy creatures and frightened of humans. They are only a danger if they are cornered or if they are protecting young."

Today's Idiot
Bank issues credit card to cat

SYDNEY, Jan 4 (Reuters Life!) - An Australian bank has apologized for issuing a credit card to a cat after its owner decided to test the bank's identity security system. The Bank of Queensland issued a credit card to Messiah the cat when his owner Katherine Campbell applied for a secondary card on her account under its name.

"I just couldn't believe it. People need to be aware of this and banks need to have better security," Campbell told local media on Thursday.

The bank said the cat's card had been canceled. "We apologize as this should not have happened," it said in a statement.

#2  Sooooo The Bank of Queensland grudgingly goes off and fixes a procedural loophole that is just too embarrasing to leave open. Much like every financial institution in the West.

Why does fraud happen? Because there's no real financial penalty to the banks for allowing to happen.

#4  Careful on the cat's credit card. If for some reason your cat can't sign it and you sign it instead, it's forgery. This topic has already been explored on Married With Children. I am assuming that the forgery scenario would apply to you and your cat as well as it did Al and his dog.

#7  A secondary card on a credit card account is not quite the same as the cat having applied for it's own credit card. All onus is on the primary card holder and the primary card holder is responsible for all secondary applications.

The problem is not the bank, it's Katherine, who submitted a falsified secondary application.

Used to work for Citybank Visa. If I had a buck for every application in the name of "Fluffy", "Rover" and "Buster" that I threw out in my years there, I'd have amassed almost $100.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ancient Statue Of Vishnu Found In Russian Origin City
An ancient Vishnu idol has been found during excavation in an old village in Russia’s Volga region, raising questions about the prevalent view on the origin of ancient Russia, the Reuters news agency reports.

The idol found in Staraya (old) Maina village dates back to VII-X century AD. Staraya Maina village in Ulyanovsk region was a highly populated city 1700 years ago, much older than Kiev, so far believed to be the mother of all Russian cities.

“We may consider it incredible, but we have ground to assert that Middle-Volga region was the original land of Ancient Rus. This is a hypothesis, but a hypothesis, which requires thorough research,” Reader of Ulyanovsk State University’s archaeology department Dr Alexander Kozhevin told state-run television Vesti .

Dr Kozhevin, who has been conducting excavation in Staraya Maina for last seven years, said that every single square metre of the surroundings of the ancient town situated on the banks of Samara, a tributary of Volga, is studded with antiques.

Prior to unearthing of the Vishnu idol, Dr Kozhevin has already found ancient coins, pendants, rings and fragments of weapons.

He believes that today’s Staraya Maina, a town of eight thousand, was ten times more populated in the ancient times. It is from here that people started moving to the Don and Dneiper rivers around the time ancient Russy built the city of Kiev, now the capital of Ukraine.

An international conference is being organised later this year to study the legacy of the ancient village, which can radically change the history of ancient Russia.

Great White North
Sitcom: "Little Mosque on the Prairies"
When I first heard about this, I thought it was a joke. Did you hear what the Paleo mom said about her 10 year old boy? She said, "They blow up so fast these days." I'm sure we won't hear jokes like that.
Every once in a while a unique project crops up that needs to be recognized for both its current relevance and ambition. A Muslim Canadian sitcom aptly titled “Little Mosque on the Prairie” is one such effort. It is a bold new television series that has recently gone into production after being commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). This “Little House” is the brainchild of Liverpool-born and Toronto-raised Zarqa Nawaz. The series, if not too restrained, is well positioned to search for and expose the hidden humor produced when the Muslim experience encounters Canadian rural society in the prairie town of Mercy.
Let's not forget that Muslims are persecuting minorities in each and every Muslim homeland. And most of our own Mohammadingdongs support that persecution. Taqiyah permits hypocrisy.
One may argue that there is nothing funny about the Muslim-local relationship within the North American landscape after the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001. But the fact of the matter is that Muslim people have been living in the prairies, towns, cities and yes, ghettos of this continent for over a century now (and longer, since the time of slavery). Let us also not forget that the architects of that horrific 9/11 episode do not represent the millions of followers of the Islamic faith who reside either in Canada or the United States. They may have claimed to speak for many but they incorrectly invoke any relationship to the divine.

India-Pakistan
Paks Can Go Fly a Kite, Again
Pakistani provincial authorities on Thursday lifted a ban on kite-flying imposed a year ago after several bystanders were fatally slashed by glass-coated strings used in the competitions. The move came a month ahead of Basant, an annual festival that heralds spring and is marked by boisterous parties and the flying of colorful kites in the eastern province of Punjab and its capital, Lahore.

Fliers strengthen their kite strings with wire or glass, sometimes with bloody consequences, to give them an advantage in duels where competitors try to cut each others' strings. Even before last year's festival got into full swing, seven people were fatally slashed, prompting authorities — with limited success — to ban kite-flying. They arrested hundreds who defied the regulation.

Among the dead was a 4-year-old boy whose throat was slit by a string coated with glass as he rode on a motorcycle with his father.

Salman Ghani, chairman of Punjab's planning and development department, said the ban will be lifted during this year's festival, scheduled for Feb. 25. Glass-coated or metal strings will be prohibited, Ghani said, and authorities will issue licenses for selling kites and strings. Kites larger than 2-feet-by-2-feet will not be allowed, to prevent the use of heavy strings. Offenders will face up to four years in jail or a fine of $1,800, Ghani said, adding that the kite-flying ban will be reimposed after the festival.

The Basant festival has been celebrated in Lahore for centuries. Basant means "yellow" in the Hindi language, a reference to the fields of blooming flowers that grace the area as spring approaches.

Islamic hard-liners in predominantly Muslim Pakistan oppose Basant because they consider it a Hindu festival.

Mosques on encroached land illegal, un-Islamic
The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has ruled that the construction of mosques on encroached land is illegal and un-Islamic. A CII report said that without written permission from the owner of the land or without a sale-deed, a mosque’s construction was not only illegal, but also un-Islamic. It said that similar was the case with a mosque built on government-owned land in the absence of written permission.

The CII gave its verdict following questions raised by the Karachi-based National Institute of Oceanology (NIO), whose land had been used without permission by an unknown group to build a mosque. Although the institute took up the issue with the Science and Technology Ministry – the parent department of the NIO – the group did not vacate its land. The NIO also questioned the Islamic status of prayers offered in mosques built on encroached land, but the CII did not comment on this issue.

There are a number of mosques in Islamabad that have been built on encroached land, and during a project to expand Muree Road, the Capital Development Authority had to demolish three such mosques.

#1  I contend that famous old mosque in Jerusalem (Dome of the Rock) is built on encroached lands, being that it is built on the ancient Jewish Temple Mount, and even uses stones salvaged from that Temple.

#2  I'm sure there is a clause about Encroached land meaning land owned by Muslims.

#3  My question is how do you build an entire mosque (it has to be complete for the prayers question to count) without anyone noticing and stopping it? Do they just throw the things up in a day? Or intimidate the owners for a few years until the thing is done?

#4  I'm sure the SCOTUS would say it is okie-dokie to use somebody else's land.

#1  Sounds like an action that needs to be taken in Arizona or New Mexico. If the police/NG have enough men to round up the protestors then they should be able to interdict tresspasers the border.

Now, thats what I call forcing the hand, May not work but couple hundred Legal US residents being arrested and/or beaten would cause quite a scene methinks

Sounds like a worthy spring vacation adventure.

#2  Hell yeah, some vigilante head busting will get the pols in D.C. to do something, anything would be better than what we do now.

#3  You realize the most likely action would be against the vigilantes, not the criminals, don't you?

Olde Tyme Religion
Battered bride was possessed by spirit, 'holy man™' claimed
A 19-year-old woman was diagnosed as being under the influence of an evil spirit in the week before she died at the home of the Leeds family into which she had married, a jury heard.

A "holy man™" in Bradford did not meet the girl but told her in-laws about her "problem" after performing a ceremony involving a top she wore, the jury at Leeds Crown Court heard yesterday.

Sabia Rani, from Pakistani Kashmir, moved to Leeds in December 2005, to live with the husband she had contracted to marry at the tender age of 15. They went through a ceremony in Palakh, Kashmir, and another in Leeds. But within five months, the bride was dead in the bathroom of her new home in Oakwood Grange, Roundhay, Leeds.
Oops.
Simon Myerson QC, prosecuting for the Crown, told the court earlier that doctors believed her body had simply given up under the stress of 11 rib fractures and massive bruising, which must have been inflicted at her home because she never went out.
That's very unexpected, isn't it?

#3  I know the first thing I did with bruised ribs (not 11 broken ones) was go start fights. Better find another koran surah to explain this, and quick.
