#1  Lol. I will never be able to take movies seriously again. Wait. I didn't take them seriously before, but you get my point anyway.

#3  The reason that they reuse public domain sound effects so much is because most of them are copyrighted. One of the last TV shows where they could do DIY sound effects was the original Star Trek. From that point on, there were so many people making and copyrighting sound effects that you have to spend a fortune on them for TV and movie productions.

I knew a man whose band was hired to make just one of the sound effects for the movie Starship Troopers, the sound of a giant bug stomping. To do it, they had to buy the rights to an entire episode of a Japanese giant robot cartoon, just for the sound of the robot stomping, then modify it enough so it was unique.

Cost a fortune, for just one sound effect. The movie used I don't know how many.

Giant sinkhole swallows homes in Guatemala
A 100m-deep sinkhole swallowed about a dozen homes early on Friday in a crowded, Guatemala City neighbourhood, killing at least two teenagers and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1 000 people.

Officials said recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main caused the sinkhole. The pit emitted foul odours, loud noises and tremors, shaking the surrounding ground. A rush of water could be heard from its depths and authorities feared it could widen or others could open up.

Rescue operations were on hold until a firefighter, suspended from a cable, could take video and photos above the hole and officials could use the results to decide how to move forward. Emergency services spokesperson Juan Carlos Bolanos identified the dead as Irma and David Soyos. Their bodies were found near the sinkhole, floating in a river of sewage. Their father, Domingo, was still missing, according to national disaster coordinator Hugo Hernandez. Residents said others were also still missing, but Hernandez couldn't confirm that.

Edward Ramirez (26) said he and other residents had been hearing noises and feeling tremors for about a month before the sinkhole appeared before dawn, waking many in the poor neighbourhood. "People were shouting, 'The electric posts are falling down!'" said Ramirez, who lives 50m from the hole. "We are going to a friend's house now. There's no way we'll stay here."

Police helped residents move out of their homes. Some officers even carried refrigerators and televisions on their shoulders, while other pushed sofas on makeshift carts. Security officials were on guard for possible looters and to clear the area of onlookers.

Ship set ablaze at Kismayo port
(SomaliNet) A vessel from India to Emirates is reportedly to have caught fire at the Somalia southern port city of Kismayo on Saturday. No human casualty was reported. It is not known what sparked the fire on the ship but some reports say that a burning charcoal was onboard. The vessel was carrying charcoal to the UAE. The authorities at the Kismayo seaport said the charcoal that burnt on the ship was worthy of $150,000. After hours, the workers at the seaport succeeded to put out the fire on the vessel, which endangered others boats and ships at the dock.

The news came as the transitional federal government recently issued a decree banning the export of charcoal as illegal. The businessmen who trade in the charcoal in southern Somalia expressed their deep concern over the new law. They asked for the Somalia government to put off the banning until they receive back the money they spent on firewood.

#1  lol, who would have thought that burning burnt wood would (scuse the pun, lol) make such a difference to the economy.

#2  *groan*

Charcoal? We Yanks use that for the barbeque, devilstoenail. We'd be short a few hamburgers and grilled sausages this summer, perhaps. Or Burger King will have to stretch things with a few drops of Liquid Smoke.

But since this ship was headed for the United Arab Emirates... no doubt some expensive chefs are about to start screaming as they adjust their menus.

#3  Charcoal, not used for home heating.

: Oldest known explosive, a mixture of 75% potassium nitrate (saltpetre), 15% charcoal, and 10% sulphur. Sulphur ignites at a low temperature, charcoal burns readily, and the potassium nitrate provides oxygen for the explosion. As gunpowder produces lots of smoke and burns quite slowly, it has progressively been replaced since the late 19th century by high explosives, although it is still widely used for quarry blasting, fuses, and fireworks. Gunpowder has high activation energy; a gun based on gunpowder alone requires igniting by a flint or a match. Some Web Site, look it up.

Least it reduced some gun sex somewhere.

#4  The charcoal used for barbecues in the US- neat little oval briquettes in bags- is made from the sawdust byproduct of the timber industry. In poor countries it is made by felling trees and burning the logs.

India-Pakistan
Scout training compulsory from next academic session
ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to make scout training compulsory in all schools from the next academic year, which starts in September, Daily Times has learnt.

Two percent of the exam fees collected by examination boards all over the country will go to the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association and Girl Guides, separate from funds allotted to these organisations in the budget.

The provincial governments have been directed to make scout training compulsory in all schools to meet the target of Pakistan having over 1 million youth volunteers to help out in emergencies, such as the October 2005 earthquake. According to the last census, there were 526,581 scouts registered with nine boy scouts associations (BSAs) in the country.

The census reported that 37,699 scouts were registered with the Azad Kashmir BSA; 60,499 with the Balochistan BSA; 15,860 with the Islamabad BSA; 10,800 with the Northern Areas BSA; 129,169 with NWFP BSA; 2,377 with the Pakistan Railways BSA; 1,654 with the PIA BSA; 179,275 with the Punjab BSA: and 89,248 with the Sindh BSA. An inter-provincial meeting of education ministers last month recommended the reorganisation of the girl guides and boy scouts. All schools must also set aside time for physical training and sports activities from the next academic year.

#1  This may not be a bad idea. The Boy Scouts, among other things, is a nationalistic organization, which encourages loyalty to government. One of Pakistan's biggest problems is that there is no "nation building" sense in their country--loyalties are too divided.

2 women killed for 'honour'
Two women in Sindh have been hacked to death by close relatives who suspected them of flirting with neighbours, in a so-called honour killing, said police on Saturday. Farida (18) and Hameeda (20) were asleep when the men attacked them with axes, smashing their heads, in a village in Sindh on Thursday morning, said police officer Ghulam Nabi. “The girls were asleep in their home when their four uncles attacked them,” Nabi told AFP. “They suspected the victims had bad character and were flirting with men in the village,” said Nabi, adding that two of the attackers had been arrested, and police were searching for the other two. The suspects told police the victims, who were not married, were kari.

#1  More lions of islam attacking defenseless women... best to make sure by attacking them when they are asleep. No wonder Napoleon claimed France was an islamic country; they have the same sense of honor and masculinity.

If the state will not deal with the men who carry out these acts it will be vigilantes taking care of business in the end. Not that I am advocating vigilante behavior, merely "warning" it is on the way.

#3  Excalibur... have you been sniffing glue? Do you really feel compulsed to indulge in french bashing with absurd bits like that, while speaking about two women murdered by primitives? What's the link, beside your prejudice?
Posted by: anonymous5089 || 02/25/2007 12:44 Comments || Top||

#4  Hit him again, A5089. Excaliber, what does this have to do with France? Personally the French-bashing is getting old. Bash the politicians certainly but leave out the generalizations.
Posted by: Deacon Blues || 02/25/2007 16:48 Comments || Top||

#5  A5089, I visited France three times during my military career, all on vacation. I found the people of Alsace great, the people of Normandy wonderful, and the people of Paris beneath contempt. I've also had dealings with several members of the French military, which were usually arrogant and self-serving. I do not believe all French are like the Parisians, nor all members of the French military to be arrogant and self-serving (although it fits well enough with the officer corps). I don't say much about the French, because I don't like most of the ones making news, and my prejudices will show. At least I hope you understand where they come from if I ever do display them.

Muslim "honor killings" are a thing in and of themselves an indication of a religion of hate. If you have to kill young women to "prove" your honor, you have none.

This Just In: Strom Thurmond and Al Sharpton Related....
That spinning noise you hear? That's Ol' Strom, passing 50,000 RPMs...
NEW YORK — Genealogists have found that civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton is a descendent of a slave owned by relatives of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, a newspaper reported Sunday. The Daily News said professional genealogists, working at the newspaper's behest, recently uncovered the ancestral ties between one of the nation's best known black leaders and a man who was once a prominent defender of segregation.

"I have always wondered what was the background of my family," the newspaper quoted Sharpton as saying. "But nothing -- nothing -- could prepare me for this."

"It's chilling. It's amazing."

Sharpton's office said Sunday morning that he would not comment until a news conference planned for later in the day.

Some of Thurmond's relatives said the connection also came as a surprise to them. A niece, Ellen Senter, said she would speak with Sharpton if he were interested. "I doubt you can find many native South Carolinians today whose family, if you traced them back far enough, didn't own slaves," said Senter, 61, of Columbia, S.C. She added: "And it is wonderful that [Sharpton] was able to become what he is in spite of what his forefather was."

One of the late senator's sons, Paul Thurmond, and a nephew, Barry Bishop, declined comment, the Daily News said.

According to the newspaper, the genealogists found documents establishing that Sharpton's great-grandfather, Coleman Sharpton, was a slave owned by Julia Thurmond, whose grandfather was Strom Thurmond's great-great-grandfather. Coleman Sharpton was later freed. The newspaper said the lead researcher was Megan Smolenyak, the chief family historian for Ancestry.com and an author of several published books on genealogy. Another researcher on the project was Tony Burroughs, who teaches genealogy at Chicago State University.

Strom Thurmond, of South Carolina, was once considered a symbol of segregation. During his 1948 bid for president, he promised to preserve racial segregation. In 1957, he filibustered for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill. But Thurmond was seen as softening his stance later in his long life. He died in 2003, at 100. The longest-serving senator in history, he was originally a Democrat but became a Republican in 1964.

His children have acknowledged that Thurmond fathered a biracial daughter. Essie Mae Washington-Williams' mother was a housekeeper in the home of Thurmond's parents.

#4  I'm sure Coleman Sharpton is glad that the slaves were freed so his descendant could grow up to be a lying race-hustling fraud and pompous ass who got innocent people killed by his rabble-rousing hate speech. He must be soooo proud

#5  proving the acorn falls never falls far from the tree. A proud family tradition of rising to power by creating strife through racial divisions.
