-Short Attention Span Theater-
Switzerland installs speed cameras on slopes to catch skiers going over 19mph
Skiers and snowboarders who love the unrestricted thrill of hurtling down alpine pistes on a sunny winter’s day are about to be stopped in their tracks.

Switzerland is introducing speed cameras on the slopes to try to reduce the increasing number of accidents. The first such nationwide controls will treat skiers like cars on the motorway. Speeders will be caught with hand-held radar devices carried by hidden personnel.

Persistent offenders could be fined or have ski passes confiscated.

The scheme is being introduced after figures revealed a drastic increase in serious ski-related accidents in Switzerland. The booming winter tourism trade has led to overcrowding at the most popular resorts and a sharp rise in accidents. Impeccable pistes and new skiing equipment also encourages skiers and snowboarders of all levels to go ever faster.

Last year there were more than 70,000 accidents on Swiss ski slopes, many resulting in serious injuries and deaths. Swiss helicopter rescue teams were called out for serious accidents 300 times in December alone, and the total cost of rescue operations is expected to exceed £100 million. The state-controlled Swiss Accident Insurance (Suva), the country’s biggest provider of compulsory cover, has responded by introducing the speed controls as part of a safety campaign.

Angela Zobrist, a spokeswoman, said: “This is not another fun-spoiling campaign of the health and safety brigade and we don’t intend to raise a warning finger to all snow sport lovers. It is a genuine safety concern. You do not realise how fast you go, which can prove to be really dangerous if you impact with another skier or have any other incident.”

The monitoring will start today in the resort of Andermatt, and will be extended to the rest of the country, including resorts such as St Moritz, Zermatt and Davos. Similar experiments have been conducted on a small scale but this is the first campaign to include all the top resorts in Switzerland.

Studies using crash test dummies on skis, similar to those conducted with cars, have suggested that going faster than 30km/h (19mph) is not safe, and that going faster than 50km/h is potentially fatal.

Authorities are exploring the legal options of punishing speeding skiers, although it is complicated because Switzerland’s cantons have different laws. Punishments are likely to vary from resort to resort.

Speeders will not be fined initially, but will be singled out and approached by Suva personnel and employees of the individual resorts, They will tell offenders to moderate their speed and explain the danger speeding poses to themselves and others on the slopes.

Josef Dahinden, a spokesman for the Andermatt resort, said: “We have collisions resulting in injuries on the pistes almost every day and the purpose of this campaign is to get people to return to normal speed and go below 30km/h.”

The move has been generally welcomed by skiers. Katy Laffan, 27, an experienced skier from London, said: “To be honest, I do not know how fast I usually go. It could be a good idea to monitor the speed on the piste, but I would say that it’s not the fast skiers who cause accidents but the ones who are out of control, such as beginners on steep slopes or drunk people.”

#4  No speesometers on skis and snowboards, this will flop badly.

#6  I wonder how fast I ski. But, since most people do ski with consideration for others, they are more likely to frequent those resorts where they won't have to worry about having their leg broken -- or worse -- by idiots who choose to ski out of control. Complying with the rules of the resort is part of the contract entered into when buying a lift ticket. You don't like it? Go off piste, if you're good enough.

#7  We've had two deaths in Colorado during the Christmas Break from skiiers skiing too fast and running into trees. Trees do NOT give. Both were boys, both were under 20, and both were skiing above their skill level. There have been a rash of people killed or injured skiing out of bounds, snowboarding on unauthorized slopes, and generally not obeying the posted control markings. There are no "do-overs" in skiing.

#8  It's hard to feel sorry for skiiers of any kind. Add snowboarders and the lack of empathy is complete.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
A Flower Blooms In The Heart Of A Nanny State City
In highly regulated cities like Boulder, Colo., you've got to take freedom where you can find it. And in the process, you may just find yourself cheering on the owner of a sleazy strip club.

Described on the Internet as "edgy, artistic, erotic gentlemen's entertainment," Boulder's newest business establishment, Nitro Club, opened just before Christmas and is raising alarm bells with city officials shocked that that club's owner, Michael Cobb, didn't first give them the opportunity to kill the project.

They question whether the club deserves to be located on the Pearl Street Mall, the city's posh shopping district. They wonder aloud why they never heard of the club before reporters brought its existence to their attention.

"I'm surprised," Councilman Ken Wilson told The Boulder Daily Camera. "It does not sound like a good idea, or what the city intends for our Pearl Street Mall area."

Critics have a point about the location being a little strange — who wants to pass pole dancers on the way to buy 500-thread count baby sheets at the boutique down the street? But Pearl Street still has a far way to go before it becomes a close cousin to Amsterdam's infamous Red Light District. Tucked away in an alley, the club has no windows to tempt passersby. It greets guests with only a simple steel door.

It is truly a triumph of freedom that somehow Cobb slipped through Boulder's cumbersome regulatory process unnoticed. It wasn't like he hadn't tried before. In 1998, he applied for a liquor license for a topless bar he was proposing inside city limits. He was denied in a 3-2 vote made after the city's liquor board heard angry testimony from other business owners and community activists. One board member said he voted no because the stage the dancers were to dance on was too small. You can believe him if you want to.

But this time around, Cobb outsmarted the city's system. He didn't need an alcohol license because the club will not sell booze. He told reporters that customers can pay $495 a year and an additional $45 a month to sit in a private area where they will drink alcohol that they must bring in themselves. This area, a nod to overcoming government prohibition, is appropriately called the "The Speakeasy."

In Boulder, the city council has taken the time to regulate every aspect of the human existence possible. Everything that is, except for strippers.

Terrorists heading to Boulder should be aware that the city has ordained itself a "nuclear-free" zone. No bomb-dropping here, please. Front porches are a source of city regulation. Be prepared to shell out hefty fines if you put any booze out there for your next party. A keg in public view can earn you a visit from the police.

Own a pet in Boulder? Think again. A few years ago, the city changed all references in its ordinances concerning animal ownership. No longer do you "own" a pet. Now you are its guardian.

And the Pearl Street Mall itself has been the source of much regulation. City council members actually took the time to ban the act of throwing Frisbees on the mall. It appears that knock-off disks were excluded from the ban. I'd love to see this one litigated.

Mayor Shaun McGrath is now saying the council will have a "discussion" about the club's location. In Boulder, talking can only lead to one thing. Regulation, of course. While McGrath concedes that Cobb's actions appear to be legal, he said the club's opening begs "the question of, 'Do we as a community think that a downtown location for a strip bar is appropriate?' That's a conversation we need to have, because we haven't had that before."

The news of Nitro Club's opening has garnered media attention near and far. Dozens of people have commented in support on news Web sites. Like most former Boulderites, I find myself in the strange position of cheering on the owner of a sleazy strip club. But alas, can this freedom from regulation possibly last?

#1  heh heh - play their game better than they can. Then demolish them. After all, he can claim in the next round of elections, that they "approved" his operation, right?

#2  But alas, can this freedom from regulation possibly last?

For a long time. A number of similar cases have indeed been a federal matter. Usually what happens is that the club is immune to new regulations aimed at and designed for a specific legal business. It's grandfathered, but the door gets shut for other competitors. Oh, and the city and tax payers get to foot all the costs of the demonstration of their hetrophobic* behaviors when their appeal cases fold. [*Cause you know that the broadminded and tolerant community of Boulder would never seek to shut down a gay club.]

#4  Boulder Colorado: For good reason, AKA "The People's Republic of Boulder".
Posted by: GK || 01/05/2008 17:05 Comments || Top||

#5  I remember a time when Carmel California govn't was full of itself in much the same way that Boulder is. You couldn't eat ice cream cause they didn't like the way it made the sidewalks sticky. Then they did something to Clint Eastwood, denied him a liquor license or something like that, and so he ran for mayor. Of course he won.

When the government gives itself too much power and begins to annoy the people, eventually they people give them the boot. It's like singers who want to stand on stage and preach politics. They soon discover who is master and who is servant. The fact that they forget that doesn't make it any less true.

Same for politicians.

Mums condemn school's halal meat decision
Mums have criticised an Oxford school for serving halal meat in children's lunches without their knowledge.

Parents of pupils at Rose Hill Primary School, in The Oval, were angered by a letter they received from headmistress Sue Mortimer. It informed them the halal meat, which involves slaughtering animals in a special way for consumption by Muslims, had been used in all school meals as part of the school's inclusion policy. The letter said the reason for the decision was that since halal meat was not forbidden by any religion or culture, its use would allow everyone to choose a meat dish for lunch.

But parents had not been consulted and said they were upset by news the school had become the first primary in the county to ask caterers for all meat dishes to be halal, for a trial period. Lyndsy Johnson, whose five-year-old son Dane Lovattattends the school, said: "I am angry that the headmistress seems to think she can do anything she wants without informing parents. "Our kids do not know what they are eating now. We have got rights as well as everybody else."

Miss Johnson, from Radford Close, said she was planning, along with another mum, to stand outside the school gates to collect signatures for a petition. Mum-of-three Sharon Haynes, 35, from Radford Close, said: "Why should we let our kids eat halal meat?" Mum Maria O'Callaghan, from Jerseycorr Road, said: "I don't agree with the way the animals are killed for halal meat."

Mrs Mortimer was unavailable for comment. However, Raghib Ali, one of the founders of the Oxford Islam and Muslim Awareness Project, said: "The meat looks the same and tastes the same. It's just a different way the animals are reared and killed. It's not cruel - it's better for the animal." However, Dr Taj Hargey chairman of the Muslim Educational Centre of Oxford, believed the school was at fault for not telling parents about the change.

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesman said three other schools in Oxford offered halal chicken up to once a week, and two more schools had requested halal meat, but had not started serving it.Another school was consulting parents over whether to offer a fully halal menu, the county council said.

#2  Most commercial chicken processors can't slow down their production line for the traditional Muslim slaughter.

Solution is simple... they play a tape of the Muslim prayer in the background as the chickens are dispatched in the normal way. They then label the chicken as 'halal'.

Many observant Muslims will only buy 'halal' products that they are certain were slaughtered using the traditional (and slow) method.

#7  Found this on of all things a PETA site.

I'm not familiar with the specific "rules" of Islam regarding Halal meat, but theoretically, it's impossible to drain all the blood from an animal or cut of meat, regardless of the mode of death.

Also the meat can't have hormons but basically they don't like the animals shocked during the slaughter. But back to the Oxford topic.

If some chicken shite pulled something like this at my kid's school I'd get them fired. Why should my kids have the restrictions of a murderous cult's diet forced upon them!?

By the way how many planes do they have to fly into the herd to make sure the cattle are murdered for allah?

#14  How stupid. Nobody would have objected if they had simply made halal seletions available. But instead she wants the long time residents to change their habits for the new-comers. These types of dhimmis create a backlash against immigrants, rather than helping them to integrate.

The question I'd be asking is how much more are the taxpayer's paying for the halal meats, which she claims looks and tastes the same. Quite a bit more, I'm sure.

Britain’s Prince William to train as a pilot
LONDON - Britain’s Prince William is to join the Royal Air Force on Monday for a four-month intensive pilot training course, RAF chiefs said. The 25-year-old, who is second in line to the throne, will take to the skies with an instructor to earn his wings. The shortened course would normally take three or four years.

He is temporarily leaving his army role for the attachment, which is aimed at helping to prepare him for his future role as head of the armed forces. His father Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, did likewise in 1971.

Army officer William has served for a year as a second lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry, following his graduation from the elite Sandhurst military academy. He is a troop commander in charge of armoured Scimitar vehicles.

While in the RAF, he will be known as Flying Officer William Wales -- equivalent to his army rank -- and wear an RAF uniform. “We have adapted the course and we have cut out anything superfluous to his specific needs because we’re not teaching him to be an operational pilot, we’re teaching him to be a competent pilot,” said Squadron Leader Kevin Marsh, who is overseeing the prince’s attachment. “It’s going to be pretty tough. We expect him to work five days a week, he’ll be flying probably twice a day and he’ll have study to do in the evenings as well.”

After four months with the RAF, William will serve on attachment to the Royal Navy. The prince is gradually being groomed for his future duties as prince of Wales and as king. He has already represented Queen Elizabeth II on a handful of occasions.

It's familiarization-training, Besoeker. His ultimate job is the throne, not as a combat pilot.
