Swiss police can be excused for fearing the worst. Acting on emergency calls Monday night, they hurried to a rural road in northern Switzerland where horrified motorists reported a long trail of blood what they believed was evidence of a brutal crime.
A police statement Tuesday said officers followed the blood for 12 miles to the town of Kuettigen only to find that a butcher's supply van had spilled its cargo.
A barrel of pork blood had overturned inside. The van had been headed for a local sausage factory.

The New Zealand newspaper said Sharma met the woman at an Auckland bar in 2006 and later drove her first to a park where he raped her in the back seat of his car.
After the attack Sharma allowed the woman to drive and fell asleep in the passenger seat, so the woman drove him to Auckland Central police station where he was arrested, said the newspaper. If she had put a brick on the accelerator and bailed out before the car went off a bridge, I would have found her Not Guilty.
"She showed a lot of bravery and common sense. I have nothing but respect for what she has endured," police detective Simon Welsh told the newspaper. Maybe a little too trusting, but still. I hope NZ jails are as bad for rapists as US ones.

I see it everyday here in Florida. It comes up from the sea right in front of me and later in the day it goes down in the west. Some times you can't see it because of the thing called clouds. Some times it is red and some times it is orangey and in the summer it is hot as hell but in the winter its not so bad. Some people here in Florida wear shorts to show reverence to the sun and some even wear dark glasses as a veil of modesty to the sun.

On October 13th, 1917, in Fatima Portugal 70,000 people witnessed a miracle. No, not mass hallucination. The crowd was so big, people on one end of the mass of people had no idea what people on the other end were thinking or seeing.
Peasant people 20-50 miles away who were not familiar with what was happening saw the miracle of the sun and testified to it.
Blessed Mary had been appearing to 3 children giving them messages of warning and prophecy.
On an ugly rainy day 70,000 muddy people waited for a "sign" that was foretold by this vision to three young Catholic children, of a woman, Mary. As 70,000 people watched, the 3 children received a private revelation from the lady.
At the end of the revelation the lady pointed to the sky. The children repeated the gesture for all to see. Well, they got a sign.
All of a sudden the clouds "drew apart like curtains" to reveal the sun which appeared as a pale silver disc. The sun began to spin wildly in the sky for a couple minutes and then came to rest. Then the cycle repeated two more times. The third time the spinning ended with the sun crashing toward the earth. People fell to the ground expecting to die. Then the sun returned to its normal position. (Present day skeptics, who try to discount the miracles of Fatima by human rationalization still cannot account for the bizarre actions of the sun that day; historically documented. Nor can they explain how this event was prophesied correctly in advance.)
Everyone present at the miracle, who were wet and muddy, stood up and were clean and dry, another sign. Many crippled and afflicted people were healed. Skeptics, there to cover the story for the press or to disprove the event, witnessed the miracle, testified to it, and many were converted. The event was reported in newspapers around the world.

Carbon Monoxyde, my understanding is that this was filmed and photographed too (by journalists, notably, who were present en masse, including from secular newspapers there to deride the gullible, and reported they saw that as well), and that there was a concerted effort by the Church to get hold of all copies - I wonder if the "disk" was more akin to an Ufo?
Anyway, back to filmed marian apparitions, there's been a couple over coptic churches in egypt that were photographed by journalists and published (in the 60's) or filmed and aired on egyptian teevees in the early 2000's. Pictures I've seen are rather weird, not at all what you'd expect (IE the BVM), but rather strange lights, cross-shaped or vaguely angel-shaped. Weird. Something definitively was going on, but what? Anyway, the whole BVM apparitions issue is very interesting, from godly manifestations to demonic and/or Ufo deception, mass hysteria or folk's Catholiscism.

The Catholic Church did try to get copies of the pictures in order to investigate the authenticity of the apparitions. You can see pictures of this on the web. The Church takes this stuff very seriously and tries very hard to debunk a miracle before it declares that anything supernatural happened. For example, in Medjugorje, many people have reported apparitions but the Church has not approved of them. What is more likely, that God made the sun dance or people saw a UFO? Im betting on God. As far as being demonic, why would a demon want people to repent and turn to God? Why would a demon exhort people to pray more? Why would a demon warn the world of two world wars? Why would a demon tell people that souls were falling into hell like snowflakes and we need to turn back to God?

A sundog is a relatively common atmospheric optical phenomenon associated with the reflection/refraction of sunlight by the numerous small ice crystals that make up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. A sundog is, however, a stationary phenomenon, and would not explain the reported appearance of the "dancing sun". However, there are marked problems with the sundog theory because the meteorological conditions at the time of the Miracle of the Sun were not conducive to such an occurrence. Sundogs occur in the presence of cirrus clouds, which are made out of ice, not water droplets. A sundog could have occurred prior to the rainstorm but not trailing the rainstorm, which is when the phenomenon occurred. A sundog would have to have occurred, at very least, hours prior to the storm, since cirrus clouds can precede a rainstorm by a few hours. The short and brief rain experienced before the sun event, on the other hand, indicates cumulonimbus clouds.

I hit "submit" too soon. Another problem with the sundog theory is that people in about a 40 mile radius witnessed the event from various angles. This is not possible with a sundog.

I can only think of four ways the sun could "dance":
1. The Earth made huge sudden unusual motions.
2. The Sun made huge sudden unusual motions.
3. It was an optical illusion or something other that the sun.
4. It was imagined.
1 and 2 are out because nobody more than 40 miles away saw it. I don't discount that God could have performed 3 or 4. But if it was 3, then God deceived them. If it was 4, then what was the point? Yusuf boasted that he owned a number of banks, three islands off the Australian coast, petrol refineries, a coffee plantation in Africa, a film production company and an Islamic clothing factory in Malaysia to get investors to sign up. He dummied up invoices to look like he had purchased an $8 million passenger ferry and a $27 million plane.
The 40-year-old told a Melbourne Turkish newspaper he also had fishing fleets, chemical laboratories, two private planes, two helicopters, one limousine, three Mercedes, five Ferraris and 40 company cars. Yusuf even came up with a reason why an incredibly rich prince would want to live in Melbourne's western suburbs. I have a $40 million house in Brighton, he told the Turkish newspaper. However because I want to live amongst my community I live in Greenvale.
Prosecutor Peter Rose, SC, said Yusuf had preyed on naive people. The accused targeted the Muslim community using their religious beliefs as reasons behind he was offering such high returns to investors, he said.
Mr Rose told the plea hearing that instead of investing the money into trucks, Yusuf used most of it to fund his lavish lifestyle, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on travel as well as $1 million on entertainment, clothing and jewellery. He said Yusuf paid no tax and used $45,000 to sponsor a Miss Teen Beauty contest and a kick-boxing contest to advertise his companies. The court heard that when investors got concerned about the legitimacy of the trucking business, Yusuf sold all his assets and moved to Malaysia.
Defence counsel Robert Richter, QC, said his client had been diagnosed with a narcissistic personality disorder and was of low to average intelligence. He said Yusuf had lived in a fantasy world in which he had decided to build an empire. It really does read like a television comic series, Mr Richter said. They are the deceptions of a man who really was deceiving himself.
Justice Robert Osborn remanded Yusuf in custody to be sentenced at a later date.

Indianapolis - Lines were long and tempers flared Wednesday not to vote but to get paid for canvassing for Barack Obama. Several hundred people are still waiting to get their pay for last-minute campaigning. Police were called to the Obama campaign office on North Meridian Street downtown to control the crowd. The line was long and the crowd was angry at times. There was an un-easy rustle down the line as if something was about to happen. The birds had stopped chirping.
"I want my money today! It's my money. I want it right now!" yelled one former campaign worker. Been watchin too many TV adds.
A former spokesman for the Obama campaign said 375 people were hired as part of the Vote Corps program and said people signed up to work three-hour shifts at a time. Three hours of canvassing got workers a $30 pre-paid Visa card.
The workers showed up to get their cards Wednesday morning at 10:00 am. "There was a note on the door saying 1:00 pm and then at 1:20 pm everybody was like why is nobody here. They just got here and they're trying to get it organized," said Heather Richards, a former campaign worker.
The large gathering of around 375 people prompted police to call in extra officers and set up temporary barricades. The barricades helped keep the crowd from spilling out onto Meridian Street. Police say the several hundred people in line were for the most part orderly. "No arrests. Some of the people were upset at first because the line wasn't moving as fast as they thought it should. But we really haven't had any problems," said Major Darryl Pierce, Metro Police.
Eventually people did start getting paid, but some said they were missing hours and told to fill in paperwork making their claim and that eventually they would get a check in the mail.
"Still that's not right. I'm disappointed. I'm glad for the president, but I'm disappointed in this system," said Diane Jefferson, temporary campaign worker.
"It should have been $480. It's $230," said Imani Sankofa. Did you forget about taxes?
"They gave us $10 an hour. So we added it. I added up all the hours so it was supposed to be at least $120. All I get is $90," said Charles Martin. Welcome to Obama's "Spread the Wealth".
"I worked nine hours a day for 4 days and got paid half of what I should have earned," said Randall Waldon. Welcome to the Obamaworld.
Some people weren't satisfied with filling out a claim form for money they felt was still due to them. "Where the heck is my Instant Gratification? Just gimmie what I say I earned. NOW!!""They say that they gonna call you or they going to mail it to you, but I don't know. We'll see what happens," said Antron Grose. If ya can't trust Obama, Bub, why'd ya work for him?
"Talking about they'll mail it to us. I ain't worried about that, man. They're not going to mail nothin'," said Martin. Don't dis The One, man, yer gonna have trouble.

Earth had a near miss with a passing asteroid this week. The space rock, labelled 2008 VM, was only discovered on Monday (3 November) at 5.49 UT as it raced towards us.
Hours later, at 22.29 UT, it skimmed by at a distance of just 28,000 miles - around an eighth as far the moon.
The find was made by a robotic telescope in Arizona, part of the Catalina Sky Survey which constantly scans the sky for potentially hazardous objects. The cosmic missile is thought to have been around 3 meters wide (10ft).
It came just a month after a similar sized space rock scored a direct hit on Earth, crashing in a remote part of the Sudan on 7 October.
Neither asteroid was large enough to do any damage, but they show once again the importance of campaigns such as Spaceguard in watching out for larger objects that could cause untold devastation. An impact with an asteroid called Apophis in 2036 has still not been ruled out, although the chances are slim.

If they discovered it only hours before it "skimmed by", then, the NASA wouldn't have had time to send Bruce Willis out there in space, and we'd be screwed up, because you don't send just a man to do Bruce Willis' work.

Kinetic energy is 1/2 mass x velocity SQUARED.
If you are traveling at 100 ft per second with that rock in the trailer of your semi, you have about about 16.2 million foot pounds of energy. That is the equivalent of about 11 lb of TNT.
An asteroid will travel at about 30,000 feet per second, so the energy is about half a kiloton of TNT. That will get your attention.
So many targets, so little time.

A PYTHON has been filmed trying to swallow whole what looks like a wallaby.
In the video, posted on break.com and believed to have taken place at James Cook University, people can be heard squealing as the python clamps its jaws around the creature and begins to swallow. But the snake seems to realise it is biting off more than it can chew and is forced to back away and regurgitate the upper half of the animal's body.
The camera operator then jolts and swears as the python pulls away briefly from the animal to inspect the crowd that has gathered.
"It happened at the uni up here and unfortunately it was in a very public place," said the blogger who posted the video. "After he slunk off, we put the wallaby in the bush in a quieter place for later."
Another blogger said: "The snake was filmed in Cairns, North Queensland, last month on a road near the uni."
James Cook University spokesman Jim O'Brien said that while snakes tended to be nocturnal, he had encountered a python on the campus during the day. "There are pythons, kangaroos and wallabies that live on the campus here. But it's the security guys who tend to see more snakes during the evening," he said.
Cairns is proving to be a battleground for some of the world's deadliest animals, with locals witnessed other fascinating battle. First a giant spider was photographed eating a bird, then a python was snapped devouring a sulphur-crested cockatoo.
