Hard to argue his point. NATO and the US have been ignoring/disregarding the Soviets' role in the liberation of Europe in WWII for four generations now. Now they want to erase it altogether, at least officially.
The problem is that while the Soviets definitely shared in the liberation of Europe as far as Berlin from the Nazis, they then treated those nations as conquered until the Berlin Wall fell in late 1989. While uninviting the Russians from this anniversary commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz is an inappropriate cut direct, it seems to me, one can understand why the nations of Central and Eastern Europe deeply resent their Russia parading itself as their liberator.
The director of the Auschwitz Museum in Poland, Piotr Cywinski, said that the Russian Federation was excluded from the countries participating in the ceremony dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops, which will be held on January 27.

Hard to even say won in spite of the Soviets; I'm not sure the organizational ability and, uhem, motivation to fight would have been there otherwise.
The Soviets did do the bulk of the fighting and dying vs. The Nazis.

I have a pet theory that the Euro aspect main event was German and Russian cultures continuing a centuries long rivalry, each receiving a radicalized government, and they were to duke it out in one last round. Everything else was ancillary.
Not sure what a Nazi occupied Eastern Europe would have looked like (probably like Soviet by with cognac instead of vodka), but we know what a Soviet occupied Eastern Europe was.
