Blago impeached -- but name that party!
23 paragraphs, and not until the 21st do we learn that he ran in a Democratic primary. But the pols who denounce him all have a D after their name.
In a dramatic display of anger and solidarity over a political scandal that has made Illinois a national laughingstock, lawmakers on Friday voted 114-1 to impeach disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

It's the first time in the state's history that the Illinois House has voted to impeach its governor. The impeachment proceedings will now move to the Illinois Senate for trial. That trial is scheduled to begin on Jan. 26.

Blagojevich was out jogging in Chicago while lawmakers in Springfield voted to impeach him. Upon returning from his run, he compared his situation to long-distance running.

#2  Nah, it's a school mentality, like in a school of fish. There are too many of them to get other than a shark hand full at a time. The only way to break them is like they broke the Navajo, herd them to a reservation in New Mexico, In this case they can keep them busy preferably along the Mexican border where they can dig a portion of a canal between Brownsville and San Diego without heavy equipment. We can save the other portions for the pols from MA, NJ, etc.

Obama to Dean: Don't Let the Door Hit Ya on the Way Out
The conspicuous absence of Howard Dean from Thursdays press conference announcing Tim Kaines appointment as Democratic National Committee chair was no accident, according to Dean loyalists. Rather, they say, it was a reflection of the lack of respect accorded to the outgoing party chairman by the Obama team.

Despite leading the party in consecutive triumphant election cycles -- as well as through off-year races like when Kaine was elected Virginia governor in 2005 -- Dean has become all but invisible since Election Day, passed over for the Cabinet position he coveted and apparently not in line for another administration post.

Indeed, when President-elect Barack Obama introduced Kaine at party headquarters Thursday afternoon, Dean was 7,023 miles and seven time zones away, closer to French Polynesia than Washington, doing party grunt work in American Samoa.

"If he had been asked to go to that event, he would have been there," Jim Dean, the chairmans brother, noted twice in an interview.

Deans reward for the party recapturing the White House, House, Senate, and taking control of seven governors mansions and eight state legislatures on his watch?

So far, nothing.
Everybody together now: YEEEAAAAAAAARRRGH!!!
A physician by training who devoted much of his time as Vermont governor to health care, Dean had his eye on becoming Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Good thing he has that medical degree to fall back on, right?
But the post went to Obama ally and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. The fact that Dean wasnt even included in Thursdays ceremonial -- and very public -- transfer of power from him to Kaine only underscored his isolation.

"The snub today was no accident," said one Dean ally. "I guarantee you he would have rescheduled his trip if asked to attend. Its easy to [screw] over people when you are riding high in the polls, let's see how many people are singing his praises in six months."

"He launched a 50-state strategy that made Democrats competitive in places they had not been in years, working with my chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, to give Democrats a majority in the House for the first time in over a decade," Obama said of the Vermonter. The obligatory praise did little to placate Dean loyalists, and the mention of Emanuel, who Dean famously clashed with when Democrats took back Congress in 2006, felt like a gratuitous slap to some.

"Its the most puzzling thing Ive ever seen in my life," added a longtime Democrat and friend of Dean, echoing the exasperation and befuddlement many close to him feel about his treatment since the election. "I have tried my best through [Obama advisers] Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod and David Plouffe to ask if he ever committed some crime. I dont get it. Hes been a good soldier."

A third Dean ally likened the outgoing chairman to two other high-profile Democrats who would seem to have given Obamaland more heartburn in the recent past. "If we can forgive Joe Lieberman for actively campaigning against Obama, this seems crazy to me. And Hillary Clinton did ok and lots of her people are getting plum assignments," noted the ally. "I really think he has rehabilitated himself. He showed he can be team player. It just seems so odd and I dont know what the reasons are."

A close friend to Emanuel insisted that the incoming chief of staff was not plotting against his old adversary. "I talk to Rahm every day," said this source. "Neither he nor I have mentioned the name of Howard Dean. Its just not on his radar screen." In any event, the friend said, Dean would know for sure if he was being shunted aside by the new administration. "Rahm never stabs you in the back. He stabs you in front. But I promise that this was accidental."

Before leaving for the South Pacific, Dean discussed his future. "I didn`t do this for the spoils," Dean told Chris Matthews on MSNBCs "Hardball." "I did this for the country. I`m very happy that Barack Obama is president, and I think he`s picked a great cabinet."

But, showing a flash of the old, off-message Dean, the outgoing chairman couldnt help but crack wise about just one of the new presidents challenges. "You gotta hand it to Blagojevich," said Dean of the embattled Illinois governors brazen appointment of Roland Burris to succeed Obama in the Senate. "What a maneuver! What a maneuver! When his back was against the wall he outsmarted a lot of people."

Rep. Ellison now Haji Ellison, courtesy Muslim American Society
Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison's groundbreaking pilgrimage to Mecca last month was paid for by an American Muslim organization that has ties to Islamic radicals and is "the Muslim equivalent of the neo-Nazi party," his critics say.

Ellison, a Democrat, became the first U.S. congressman ever to make the hajj pilgrimage when he visited Islam's holy city in December. The trip was funded by the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, a non-profit interfaith group that is one of 55 branches of the MAS nationwide. The pilgrimage was hailed by Muslim activists in the U.S.

"A U.S. congressman going on hajj sends a very positive message to the Muslim world about America and the religious diversity in America," said Ibrahim Hooper, communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim advocacy group.

But Ellison, the only Muslim in Congress, is coming under fire for his ties to MAS, which one terrorism expert called "the Muslim equivalent of the neo-Nazi party."

"It is the de facto arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S.," said Steven Emerson, director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. "The agenda of the MAS is to ... impose Islamic law in the U.S., to undermine U.S. counterterrorism policy."

The MAS was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, an international Islamist movement created in Egypt in 1928. Radical members of the Brotherhood founded the terror group Hamas and were among the first members of Al Qaeda.

The Muslim American Society's former secretary general has acknowledged that the group was founded by the Brotherhood, and in 2004 he estimated that about half of MAS members were in the Muslim Brotherhood.

"Ikhwan [Brotherhood] members founded MAS, but MAS went way beyond that point of conception," Shaker Elsayed told the Chicago Tribune, explaining that the group had expanded to include a wider viewpoint.

Illinois House committee urges impeachment of Blagojevich
(Xinhua) -- The Illinois House impeachment committee called Thursday for impeachment of Governor Rod Blagojevich who is accused of selling U.S. senator seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

In a 69-page report posted on the House website, the committee noted that the governor refused to testify and rebut any of the allegations involving his conduct or the federal criminal charges surrounding his arrest at his home on Dec. 9. "While the governor's silence could not be held against him in a criminal case, the opposite is true in a non-criminal proceeding such as this impeachment inquiry," the report said.

Paterson notes Princess Caroline's 'lack of elected experience'
Geez, even the blind guy can see it...
Caroline Kennedy's lack of elected office experience "does not help her" in her quest to represent New York in the U.S. Senate, Gov. David Paterson told The Buffalo News this morning. "The notion that I have to take Caroline is not coming from me," Paterson said in an interview in his Capitol office with The Buffalo News.

Burris denies any improper deals for Senate seat
Roland Burris cleared a key hurdle Thursday on his way to filling President-elect Barack Obama's vacant U.S. Senate seat, testifying under oath that he didn't strike any deals with Gov. Rod Blagojevich to get the plum appointment.

The testimony was one condition Senate leaders - who once vowed not to seat anyone appointed by the scandal-clouded Blagojevich - set this week as they softened their position on Burris.

"I can before this committee state that there was nothing ... legal, personal, or political exchanged for my appointment to this seat," Burris testified to an Illinois House committee investigating whether to impeach the governor.

Later in the day, the committee recommended impeachment, setting up a vote as early as Friday in the full House.

Burris declined to answer questions about whether he would have gone to federal authorities if he'd been offered such a deal. He also declined to say whether Blagojevich should resign or be impeached, saying he has no control over those issues.

The governor picked Burris to fill President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat after being arrested on federal charges that include allegations he schemed to sell the seat to the highest bidder.

Obama picks Clinton aide as Pentagon No. 2
Oh, good. Even more "Change"...
President-elect Barack Obama chose a longtime Democratic defense expert and industry lobbyist to be the No. 2 official at the Pentagon on Thursday, and flanked Bush administration holdover Robert Gates with other Democratic advisers. Obama's choice to be the deputy defense secretary, William J. Lynn, was a top Pentagon budget official under former President Clinton and a defense adviser to Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy before that.

Norm in exile
Sarah Abruzzese reports on the pathos of Norm's senatorial exile:
The lights are on in Sen. Norm Coleman's office but no one's home.

Coleman has been locked out of his offices in the Hart Senate Office Building and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who heads the Rules Committee, said she believes the doors will stay barred for the foreseeable future.

Because Coleman's first term officially ended Saturday at noon and he has not been certified the winner of the hotly contested Minnesota Senate race, he has lost his desk on the Senate floor and been denied official office space.

While staff answered the phones on Monday, by Tuesday no one picked up. All of Coleman's vanity photos and a framed hockey jersey are still on display but his name has been removed from the plaque outside.

Coleman can visit the Senate . Like all former members not registered as lobbyists, Coleman can visit the floor -- but he'll have no place to sit.
We encountered a disconsolate-looking Coleman near a Senate elevator bank accepting back-slaps and handshakes from fellow Republicans John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.).

#3  What turned that around?

'Selective Elimination' of absentee ballots, improperly marked ballots (Coleman's 'square' not completely filled in) and ballots from counties that would go "R" by the (Democrat run) State Elections Board .

Oh, and counting ballots from "Blue" districts at least twice, 'just to get it right'.

Did I leave anything out?

#5  Folks, Coleman got hit by the same tsunami that a lot of other Pubs got hit with on Election Day. Much as I dislike Bambi, I'll give him credit: his campaign's get out the vote drive is the most impressive in American political history, and all those voters filled in the rest of their ballots for the D's.

As evidence: Georgia. When Saxby Chambliss didn't get 50% he had to face Jim Martin in the run-off. No Obama GOTV machine that time, and Chambliss won handily.

Franken benefited from the Obama machine, it's that simple. This race shouldn't have been close and if the Dems had nominated the Hildebeast, it wouldn't have been.

Vote to End Fairness Doctrine Not in Works, Hoyer Says
The House Democratic leadership, which controls the legislative schedule, currently has no plans to bring the Broadcaster Freedom Act -- which would permanently ban the Fairness Doctrine -- up for a vote, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told CNSNews.com at the Capitol on Wednesday.
And if you can't believe Steny Hoyer, who can you believe?
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans on Wednesday unveiled legislation identical to the Broadcaster Freedom Act , with the support of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-K.Y.)

The Fairness Doctrine was a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation that required broadcasters to grant equal airtime to opposing viewpoints. The rule was rolled back during the Reagan administration.

One result of that was the market demand for conservative talk radio and the rise of popular programs such as the Rush Limbaugh Show and the Sean Hannity Show, among many others.

In recent years, however, Democratic leaders, including Hoyer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) have spoken in favor of restoring the doctrine.

In 2007, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) introduced the Broadcaster Freedom Act to strip FCC officials of the power to restore the doctrine. Pence's bill, however, was not brought to the floor for a vote because of opposition from Democratic leadership.

"coming up at 11:30 the Conservative reply to the liberal news."

#6  Cyber Sarge: Don't for a moment believe that the media and the government wouldn't be as hypocritical as hell about the fairness doctrine. They would insist that beyond doubt, Keith Olbermann is fair and balanced, but someone like Brit Hume was "radical right wing."

#7  Actually guys, the first time around the big 3 were exempted. It would be harder to justify exempting networks nowdays with cable, but still possible. Think of a "certification" from the government so you don't have to put the peasant right on your liberal ivory tower show. Because you are a "journalist" and all.

#8  Guys, just think about it. These traitors would put even farther left-wing people on to balance out the conservatives like Olberman.

It's all in who gets to make the definitions.

#9  It would guarantee equal time for opposing viewpoints -on the radio not in congress.

#10  Problem is that talk radio is becoming a relic of the '90s. The future in the series of Tubes that Algore created, and the Democrats are way ahead in that ball game.

#11  Conservative talk radio blossomed AFTER the Fairness Doctrine was rescinded.

Think about who wants to bring it back. Consider what their reasons might be.

Scared yet?

#12  So Rush appears on NPR and Air America, I guess it can only help their ratings but I think a number of heads would pop.

#13  yeah, let's expand the fairness doctrine to the public education system; ie, if your're getting federal funds, you will allow conservative instructors in 50-50.

Home Front: WoT
Obama Is Reported Set to Revise Counterterrorism Efforts
WASHINGTON -- President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to scrap the way President Bush oversaw domestic security in the White House and name a former Central Intelligence Agency official to coordinate counterterrorism, people close to the transition said Wednesday.
A CIA man, huh? That'll reassure all the civil libertarians ...
The plan being discussed would eliminate the independent homeland security adviser's office and assign those duties to the National Security Council to streamline sometimes overlapping functions. A deputy national security adviser would be charged with overseeing the effort to guard against terrorism and to respond to natural disasters.

Democrats close to the transition said Mr. Obama's choice for that job was John O. Brennan, a longtime C.I.A. veteran who was the front-runner to head the spy agency until withdrawing in November amid criticism of his views on interrogation and detention policies. His appointment would not require Senate confirmation.

Mr. Obama has made no final decision about how to structure domestic security in his White House, and advisers plan to wait until his inauguration to conduct a formal review. But many key advisers have publicly advocated folding it into the National Security Council, and those involved in discussions said the only real questions appeared to be how to do that and how to explain it without looking like domestic security was being downgraded as a priority.

Mr. Bush first appointed a homeland security adviser after the Sept. 11 attacks, and Congress later institutionalized a Homeland Security Council inside the White House. The adviser holds the rank of assistant to the president, equivalent to the national security adviser , and reports directly to the Oval Office.

"It's pretty clear they've made the decision," said Frances Fragos Townsend, who was homeland security adviser under Mr. Bush and has talked with the Obama team about the issue. "It's a question of timing and how they're going to roll it out."

Mr. Bush's aides, including the national security adviser, Stephen J. Hadley, have privately urged Mr. Obama's advisers not to get rid of the separate homeland security office, warning that it would load too many responsibilities on the National Security Council and risk important matters' falling through the cracks.

The likely selection of Mr. Brennan to take over domestic security issues in the White House represents a turnaround. Mr. Brennan, a former C.I.A. officer in the Mideast who served as the first director of the National Counterterrorism Center, was seen as the favorite for C.I.A. director after the Nov. 4 election. But he abruptly pulled out after critics of Mr. Bush sharply criticized Mr. Brennan for past comments that seemed to defend C.I.A. operations after Sept. 11. Mr. Brennan defended his record and called himself an opponent of the harsh interrogation methods used in recent years.

In his new capacity, Mr. Brennan would report to Gen. James L. Jones, the retired Marine commandant slated to serve as Mr. Obama's national security adviser. Dozens of aides now working for the homeland security adviser would largely be incorporated into the N.S.C. staff. The cabinet Department of Homeland Security would not be affected by any of these moves.

The idea of merging the two councils has been recommended by a number of reports, most notably in November by the Center for American Progress Action Fund and by Third Way. Among those preparing their report were John D. Podesta, Mr. Obama's transition co-chairman, and members of his team.

The report argued that domestic security is inextricably tied to the nation's broader foreign and military policy making.

"It was an artificial distinction to begin with," said Matt Bennett, vice president of Third Way. "Homeland security is a function of national security in its purest form."

C. Stewart Verdery Jr., a former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security under Mr. Bush, said putting domestic security under the national security adviser would focus more attention on those matters, not less.

"It was very hard to get D.H.S. on the N.S.C. radar," Mr. Verdery said. "You want your issues considered. You don't want to be off in some second bucket."

But some state officials are skeptical. "The National Security Council is focused outside," said Nancy Dragani, director of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency and president of the National Emergency Management Association. "They're not going to be, nor should they be, consumed with worrying about what's happening in Ohio."

Senator Susan E. Collins of Maine, the ranking Republican on the homeland security committee, said, "If the Homeland Security Council were to be merged with the National Security Council, I would be concerned that insufficient attention would be devoted to homeland security issues."

Ms. Townsend, who held the job until about a year ago, said the council should remain independent, but acknowledged pros and cons. In fact, she said, she recommended to Mr. Hadley and his predecessor, Condoleezza Rice, that they assume responsibility for domestic security, but both persuaded her they already had too much to do.

Still, Ms. Townsend added that fellow Republicans should not use the organizational change to accuse Mr. Obama of not caring as much about domestic security. "That's nonsense," she said.
