[AL] A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted the Southeast regional administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and a former Alabama Environmental Management Commissioner for violating state ethics laws.

Hillary Clinton: Stacey Abrams would've already won ‘if she'd had a fair election'
[The Hill] Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams would already have won Georgia's governor race if there had been a fair election.

“If she had a fair election, she already would have won," the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee said while speaking at the University of Texas's LBJ School of Public Affairs, according to The Statesman.

Clinton on Tuesday night received the inaugural In the Arena Award from the university. She spoke about a variety of topics after accepting the honor, including Georgia's governor's race, which remains unsettled.

The race has gained national attention, as Abrams vies to become the first African-American woman to be elected governor in U.S. history. Her opponent, former Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R), leads Abrams in an official tally of the votes.

Though Kemp's campaign has remained confident that the final vote tally will force a recount.

In Austin, Hillary Clinton honored for public service
[Statesman] Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has played as consequential a role in American politics as anyone in her lifetime, received the inaugural In the Arena Award from the LBJ School of Public Affairs on Tuesday.

The award’s name is drawn from a speech President Teddy Roosevelt delivered at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1910, the year after he left the presidency, in which he said: "The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena...; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls, who neither know victory nor defeat."

In presenting the award, Angela Evans, dean of the LBJ School, said that Roosevelt "perfectly describes" Clinton’s grit and courage in a lifetime of public involvement as an attorney, advocate for children, first lady of Arkansas and of the United States, New York senator, secretary of state, and two-time candidate for the Democratic nomination for president. In 2016, Clinton failed while "daring greatly" as the first woman to be the nominee of a major party for president, winning the popular vote but losing the electoral vote and the White House to Donald Trump.

"If you want to be blameless, stay on the sidelines," said Evans, who said that for decades and to this day, Clinton perseveres over enormous "vitriol."

Clinton took the stage at the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium to receive the award to whoops, hollers and applause from the audience, which was studded with longtime supporters who rose to cheer her.

Seated opposite one another on stage in matching red chairs, Evans interviewed Clinton, who recalled that she entered the metaphorical arena in the 1960s.

"It really was an amazing time in American history," Clinton said, noting the presence of Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson’s daughters Luci and Lynda at the event. "It seemed we were all pulling in the same direction to that common ground, that higher ground."

That decade was marred by political assassinations and the Vietnam War, she said, "but people were alive, and they were committed and involved in all the issues of the day."

Pelosi Thanks Al Sharpton for ‘Saving America'
[Free Beacon] House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) on Wednesday praised MSNBC host Rev. Al Sharpton and thanked him for "saving America."

Pelosi spoke at the National Action Network's (NAN) legislative and policy conference, where she laid out the Democratic Party's agenda before introducing Sharpton, who founded the non-profit civil rights organization in 1991. The organization was focused on turning out voters during the midterms.

"We are going to be visionary. We are going to be unifying. We are going to be healing. We are going to be transparent in how we do this. We are going to be respectful of other views, but we are going to try to find our common ground where we can," Pelosi said. "We have a responsibility to do that, but where we can't, stand our ground like a rock. That's what Thomas Jefferson advised us to do."

She went on to tell the conference attendees about how she has received so many letters and phone calls from people thanking her for "saving America." She then said that she would like to give the thanks to the attendees before she introduced Sharpton and thanked him for "saving America," in a clip first flagged by Grabien.

Sharpton, a progressive firebrand and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, hosts MSNBC's "PoliticsNation" on Saturdays and Sundays and has been floated as a potential Democratic contender in the 2020 race to try to defeat Trump. Regarding a presidential run, Sharpton in August told Buzzfeed that he never "rule[s]anything out."

#9  European Conservative, you might be surprised about California. If you look at voting on a county-by-county level you'll see it is a very red state with a blue coast. I believe rampant voter fraud has made it a far bluer state than the voters would have.

#11  I must say the U.S. system puzzles me, because in Germany voting is really a straightforward thing. Of course every German has a registered main domicile.

One month before the election, I get a letter from the city telling me where I'm registered to vote. It's a nearby place, I bring the notification, my ID, get handed the ballot, go to a cabin, vote, go back, put my vote in the box under supervision. That's that. Has never taken me more than 10 minutes.

I cannot understand why Democrats are against a state issued photo ID which includes your citizenship. I mean, you can't go to a post office to retrieve a package without showing proper ID.

I understand that Americans do not want a national ID, but it would solve many problems. Start with putting citizenship (or lawful residence status) on every driving license.

#14  In California in 2016 nobody checked my ID when I voted. Anyone could have said they were me and voted for me. With only 50% of people bothering to vote the odds are good nobody would find out. If anyone found a double-ballot they'd have to determine which was real and which wasn't, a process I've never heard happening in California. They've made it very easy to steal elections if they wanted to.

How does that work? I suppose you are registered to vote at a certain place which has you on their list.

So if another person votes "for you", he/she must know that your name is on the list, claim he/she's you. What if you turned up 10 minutes later?

Sound like an enormous risk or am I missing something?

White House says it has ‘broad discretion’ on press access

’s administration contends it has "broad discretion" to regulate press access to the White House as it fends off a legal challenge from CNN and other outlets over the revocation of journalist "Journolist" Jim Acosta’s "hard pass."

In a legal filing ahead of a Wednesday hearing on CNN’s request for a temporary restraining order to restore Acosta’s access, the government argues it "was lawful" to punish Acosta for his behavior during a contentious Trump presser last week.

The White House’s explanations for why it seized Acosta’s "hard pass," which grants news hounds as-needed access to the 18-acre complex, have shifted over the last week. Acosta has repeatedly clashed with Trump and press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in briefings over the last two years.

The News Agency that Dare Not be Named joined with a group of 12 other news organizations planning to file an amicus brief in the case Wednesday.

"Whether the news of the day concerns national security, the economy, or the environment, news hounds covering the White House must remain free to ask questions. It is imperative that independent journalists have access to the President and his activities, and that journalists are not barred for arbitrary reasons," the law firm Ballard Spahr said in a statement on behalf of the news organizations.

Fox News President Jay Wallace said that Secret Service passes for working White House journalists "should never be weaponized." Fox News was one of the organizations part of the filing.

Wallace said while Fox News doesn’t condone the "growing antagonistic tone by both the president and the press at recent media avails," it supports "access and open exchanges for the American people."

Accosta is an ass. Painfully obvious. He drips of it. So much of an ass when a dog greets him, the dog sticks its nose in his ear. I haven't seen a more classic 'no my blankee' move since I had a two year old with a head cold.

Personally, I am at the point where I would pull all press passes and just email a press statement to everyone each day.

Trump Taps Indian Daughter Of Immigrants To Succeed Kavanaugh On DC Circuit

will nominate Neomi Rao, administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), for a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Speaking at the White House’s Diwali celebration Tuesday, the president said he was slated to make the announcement on Wednesday, but was so delighted by the event he spontaneously decided to reveal Rao’s pending nomination. Diwali is a Hindu religious festival and Rao is Indian-American.

"I just nominated Neomi to be on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, the seat of Justice Brett Kavanaugh," Trump said. "We were going to announce that tomorrow, then I said, ’You know, here we are, Neomi, we’re never going to do better than this right?'"

"Thank you very much, Mr. President, for the confidence you’ve shown in me," Rao replied. "I greatly appreciate it."

The D.C. Circuit seat in question was vacated following Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rao, the daughter of Indian immigrants colonists, has served as the Trump administration’s deregulatory czar since 2017, and is widely considered a leading authority on agency law. Before re-entering the White House, she founded and led the Center for the Study of the Administrative State at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School, increasingly a bastion of conservative jurisprudence.

Israel critic elected to House backtracks on her previous opposition to BDS

now says she ’believes in and supports’ boycott movement, after calling it ’counterproductive’ during election campaign.

Omar’s comment came in response to a website called Moslem Girl, which pressed her on her appearance during the campaign at a Minneapolis area synagogue.

During that candidates’ forum, she had said that BDS "stops the dialogue" and is "counteractive" to achieving a two-state outcome.

Like many other Democrats, she noted her opposition to anti-BDS legislation but framed it as a free-speech issue.

"Ilhan believes in and supports the BDS movement, and has fought to make sure people’s right to support it isn’t criminalized," her campaign told Moslem Girl after the election. "She does, however, have reservations on the effectiveness of the movement in accomplishing a lasting solution."

TC Jewfolk, a local Jewish news website which originally reported her ostensible rejection of BDS, pressed her on the issue after the Moslem Girl statement in text messages which it posted on Twitter.

Omar insisted there was no contradiction. "I believe and support the BDS movement and have fought to make sure people’s right to support it isn’t criminalized," she said. "I do, however, have reservations on [the] effectiveness of the movement in accomplishing a lasting solution. Which is what I believe I said at the forum."

The TC Jewfolk news hound pressed her further, asking Omar why she didn’t simply answer "yes or no" when asked about the issue at the synagogue forum for candidates.

"It was a bigger issue and she didn’t ask for a ’yes or no’ answer," Omar replied, referring to the person who posed the question. Omar said her position during the campaign was not "politically expedient."

Omar had earned notoriety in the pro-Israel community for a 2012 tweets posted in which she said that Israel had "hypnotized the world" to ignore its "evil doings." Defending that tweet earlier this year, she said on the same platform that calling attention to the "Israeli Apartheid regime" was not anti-Semitic.

Omar is the first Somali and one of the first two Moslem women elected to Congress. The other Moslem woman elected last week, Rashida Tlaib of the bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit
