Puntland police arrest terror suspects in Bossaso security sweep
BOSSASO, Somalia -- Puntland police forces have arrested undisclosed number of terror suspects in security sweep in the Gulf of Aden Port City of Bossaso on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

Bari regional Police Commander Abdihakim Yusuf Hassan told reporters that the suspects were captured in connection with hand grenade attack that left three people wounded on Saturday evening. Hassan added that police launched investigations into the incident and after interrogations would put the outcome on display.

"The security situation is relatively good in Bossaso, it is populous city and you can understand the magnitude of enemy infiltration," said Bari regional police commander. "We have arrested suspects in connection with the hand grenade hurdled into Bossaso police compound, investigations and operations are underway and we will release the results at a later time."

Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group claimed responsibility for the grenade explosion, boasting they wounded four soldiers. Nevertheless, security officials confirmed to Garowe Online that two soldiers and a civilian bystander sustained minor injuries.

Africa North
Suicide Attack Kills Three Libyan Soldiers
[AnNahar]. Three Libyan soldiers were killed and four others maimed Tuesday in a suicide car kaboom on a road checkpoint west of the embattled city of Benghazi, a military official said.

The official said an attacker drove a boom-mobile into the checkpoint, located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of Benghazi on the road to Ajdabiya.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Tuesday's attack but government forces have been battling Islamist militia for control of Benghazi for months.

The same checkpoint was targeted by a similar attack in October but the attacker's car went kaboom! before reaching the checkpoint and there were no other casualties.

Libya's internationally recognized government, which has lost control of much of the country, has pleaded for international help in combating the militias.

Morocco Detains Three IS Suspects Near Spanish Enclave
[AnNahar]. Moroccan police have detained three suspected supporters of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. jihadist group near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

The arrests were made in the border town of Fnideq where two men were held last month on suspicion of running a cell recruiting young women via the Internet to join IS, the ministry said.

It did not say when the new suspects were detained.

A brother of one of the men was killed while fighting for the bully boy organization in Syria late last year, the ministry said.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 Moroccans have traveled to Syria or Iraq to fight for IS or other jihadist groups, according to government estimates.

In September, new counter-terrorism legislation was introduced to try to stem the flow of volunteers which has resulted in around 30 convictions.

Last month's arrests in Fnideq were made in conjunction with raids by Spanish police that netted another five suspects.

Authorities said that those detained were suspected of having recruited at least 12 women to travel to Iraq or Syria, most of them from the Spanish North African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

Army: Missing Policeman Found Killed in Egypt's Sinai
[AnNahar]. Egyptian troops found the body Tuesday of a policeman who had been reported kidnapped in the Sinai Peninsula after a search operation during which 10 "terrorists" were killed, the army said.

Police Captain Ayman al-Desouky, who had gone missing near the town of Rafah on the border with the Gazoo Strip on Sunday, was "killed by terrorist elements," it added.

His body was found with a bullet to the head after a joint search with police across the North Sinai towns of El-Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah, during which the "10 terrorists" were killed in a shootout.

It was not immediately clear who had killed the officer but jihadists based in the restive Sinai have claimed a string of killings of security force personnel.

Egypt's deadliest murderous Moslem group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem) is based in the peninsula and pledged allegiance in November to the Islamic State

Al Qaeda in Yemen claims responsibility for Paris attack
[Rooters] Al Qaeda in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack on French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, saying it was ordered by the Islamist militant group's leadership for insulting the Prophet Mohammad, according to a video posted on YouTube.
Ralph Peters is absolutely correct, tit-for-tat "drone zapping" is 'n opvok of a strategy. Successful vertical insertions or airborne assaults against terrs such as the one conducted during the battle of Cassinga on 4 May 1978, or the vertical insertion at Kolwazi less than ten days later that same year, will take the war to the terrorists and eventually produce the desired results. Anything less favours the terrs and fails to take matters seriously.

'Intel Ireland' evacuates factory over bomb threat, including dozens of Israelis
Who would threaten to bomb Intel in Ireland?
[Ynet]. Intel Ireland evacuated thousands of employees, dozens of them Israelis, from its factory in Leixlip, not far from capital city Dublin, over a bomb threat on Tuesday morning. The Independent reported that a call was made at 6:30am (8:30 am Israel time) alerting to the bomb, leading Special Forces to conduct searches in the factory.

Intel employs some 4,000 employees in its new microprocessor factory. Over the past summer, some 50 Israeli employees relocated to the new factory in Ireland after Intel decided to build its new complex there rather than in Israel.

US appeals court hears case on NYC police surveillance of Muslims
[Ynet]. Civil rights groups asked a panel of federal judges on Tuesday to overturn a lower court's ruling that there was nothing harmful in New York City police conducting surveillance on Moslems in neighboring New Jersey without suspicion of a crime.

The hearing came days after the deadly attacks in Gay Paree by Islamist gunnies, which have renewed the debate over the balance between government surveillance and citizens' civil liberties. Some Moslems have expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
that the attacks will be used to justify spying on them or spark an anti-Moslem backlash.

The Moslem plaintiffs, including New Jersey imams, business owners, a war veteran and a student group, first sued the city in 2012. They said their lives had been disrupted in myriad ways and their constitutional rights breached by New York police surveillance.

#4  Did the police have an actionable suspicion of crime when they surveilled the mafia?

Until something is done congregating while Muslim is probably enough for rational people to presume a crime, conspiracy at least, is in play.

So, now what?
Posted by: AlanC || 01/14/2015 7:37 Comments || Top||

#5  Alan: yes, as it turns out, the police DID have actionable suspicion of crime when they surveilled the Mafia. All those wiretaps were authorized by a judge in pursuant to a warrant. That the federales at that time could get a wiretap on a ham sandwich was a different yet related matter.

There's a fine line here: allow the Feds to do surveillance on a group just on appearance, and next thing you know it'll be the Tea Party being surveilled. That's certainly where Champ, ValJar and Holder would like to go.

I'm all for surveillance. I'm also all for civil rights. The two can co-exist but sometimes it isn't easy. The NYC police have to make a better case than what they've (apparently) made in court.

#7  Steve, I was just trying (and failing) to be snarky about all the Muzzie defenders, civil/human rights squealers and there twisted knickers.

I was well aware of the mob and all its ins & outs since I was growing up in Joisey from the '50s.

I'm also paranoid about government in general and don't doubt for a minute that they would (and do) go after political opponents of the beltway party (see Bundy ranch, IRS etc.)

You point out (in a very measured and adult way) what the real problem is. Where's the line and how do you walk it? The one question I've got is why hasn't the gov't been a little more forthcoming with the results of all the wiretaps that the NSA and others have been gathering? They don't need to give away people and methods any more than Snowden et al have already. Let's know what's going on so we, the people, can form an informed opinion.

Personally, I think the problem is exacerbated if not completely caused by the inability of the "leaders" of the country to clearly define who the enemy is and what our goals are for fighting. How much of this is pure PC cowardice, how much is Saudi money I'll leave as an exercise for the reader.

Pakistan rally celebrates Charlie Hebdo attackers
[CHANNELNEWSASIA] While last week's attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
sparked global outrage, dozens of people in Pakistain's northwestern city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
paid tribute Tuesday (Jan 13) to the brothers who carried out the murders.

Though small in scale, the event was indicative of the anger that portrayals of the Prophet Mohammed can ignite in some parts of the Moslem world, particularly in Pakistain where tough blasphemy laws make insulting the Prophet a crime punishable by death. Local holy man Maulana Pir Mohammad Chishti led some 60 people in prayers for Cherif and Said Kouachi, who rubbed out 12 people at the magazine's offices on Jan 7, as worshippers called the pair "deaders".

They also chanted "Death to Hebdo publications" and "Long live Cherif Kouachi, long live Said Kouachi", and kissed posters of the brothers who were rubbed out by police two days later. "These two brothers have paid the debt of all Moslems in the world and we present them our salute and respect," Chishti said.

Aurangzeb Alhafi, professor of Islamic Studies at Punjab University in the eastern city of Lahore said he attended the prayers as a religious duty. "If freedom of expression stops at the mention of the Holocaust, then it should also stop at the honour of our Prophet," Alhafi told AFP.

Fourteen people are languishing on death row in Pakistain for falling fall of its blasphemy laws, which rights groups say are used to persecute minorities and wage personal vendettas. Mobs often take matters in their own hands and lynch those accused of blasphemy, and such killers are widely feted.

Charlie Hebdo meanwhile has announced it will defy the attackers by putting a cartoon of a weeping Prophet Mohammed on its next cover.

Protest against French magazine
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: Dozens of activists of a politico-religious group on Tuesday staged a rally here to condemn the French satirical magazine for publishing the caricature of Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!).

The activists, less than 80 in numbers, gathered at the Shahi Bagh to protest against Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
-- the French weekly magazine that had published caricature of the Holy Prophet (PTUI!).

Led by Maulana Pir Mohammad Chishti and Pir Sajjad Badshah, the activists raised slogans against the French magazine.

The speakers said they would oppose the caricatures of all revered prophets be that of Jesus Christ or Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!).

Two gunnies had stormed into the offices of the French magazine and killed twelve people, including its editor and a Moslem cop.

Pakistain has officially condemned the attack on Charlie Hebdo. Police were not present at Shahi Bagh, where the protest organisers said, they had initially planned to offer prayers for the gunnies but later decided to organise a protest rally against the magazines policy of ridiculing revered religious figures.

Seven FC men killed in Loralai
[DAWN] At least seven personnel of security forces were killed and two others injured in an armed attack on a checkpoint of the Frontier Corps in Makhtair area of Loralai district, some 255km northeast of Quetta, on Monday.

Official sources said a group of 40 to 50 gunnies launched an attack on the checkpoint in Chichloo area of Makhtair in the small hours of Monday.

Militants fired five rockets on the checkpoint before opening indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons, a bigwig of Levies force said.

The FC soldiers at the checkpoint fired back, setting off a ferocious gunbattle that lasted several hours and led to the death of four FC men.

The gunnies later fired at a truck carrying FC troops in aid of their beleaguered colleagues on the checkpoint, killing yet another three FC personnel.

However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
the gunnies took flight upon sighting fresh contingents of the Frontier Corps.

The paramilitary force fanned out in pursuit of the Lion of Islams, believed to have fled to the mountains nearby.

There are reports about deaths and injuries among attackers in the operation carried out by the security forces, a source said. However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
there was no word from the FC or the administration.

Security officials identified the victims of the armed attack as Naib Subedar Muhammad Afzal, Hawaldar Samiullah, soldiers Muhammad Ramzan Atiqur-Rehman, Tasawar Hussain, Shahid Gul and Samiullah. .

Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
Chief Minister Dr Malik Baloch and Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti have condemned the attack on Frontier Corps and offered condolences to the bereaved families.

Although no organization has so far grabbed credit for the attack on FC checkpoint, some officials said the involvement of outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain could not be ruled out.

The TTP had recently claimed the kidnapping of nine people from a passenger bus and a private rented car in Qila Saifullah. The two vehicles were bound for Quetta and Zhob.

The group later said it had killed an officer of Pakistain Air Force (PAF) and dumped his body in Gawal area of Qila Saifullah. They released a driver and a student while six other people, including some government officials, were still missing.

US designates Mullah Fazlullah as a 'global terrorist'
[DAWN] The US State Department on Tuesday designated Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) chief Mullah Fazlullah
...son-in-law of holy man Sufi Mohammad. Known as Mullah FM, Fazlullah had the habit of grabbing his FM mike when the mood struck him and bellowing forth sermons. Sufi suckered the Pak govt into imposing Shariah on the Swat Valley and then stepped aside whilst Fazlullah and his Talibs imposed a reign of terror on the populace like they hadn't seen before, at least not for a thousand years or so. For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan...
as a global terrorist.

According to a State Department blurb, Fazlullah has been labeled a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order (E.O.) 13224, which targets faceless myrmidons and those providing support to faceless myrmidons or acts of terrorism.

The consequences of these designations include a prohibition against American citizens engaging in transactions with Fazlullah, and the freezing of all property and interests of Fazlullah that are in the United States, or come within the United States or the possession or control of US persons, the statement said.

Fazlullah was elected TTP commander in November 2013, following the death of former leader Hakimullah Mehsud.

Under the leadership of Fazlullah, TTP grabbed credit for the December 16, 2014 attack on a school in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
that resulted in the deaths of at least 148 people, mostly students.

Prior to becoming TTP leader, Fazlullah claimed he was behind the killing of Pak Army Major General Sanaullah Niazi in September 2013, as well as ordering the shooting of schoolgirl and activist Malala Yousafzai
...a Pashtun blogger and advocate for girls' education from Mingora, in Swat. She started blogging at age 11-12. She was 15 when a Talib boarded her school bus and shot her in the head in 2012. She was evacuated to a hospital in Britain and the Pak Taliban vowed to kill her and her father. Among other awards, she received the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, which she deserved more than Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, Yasser Arafat, or Rigoberta Menchu...
in 2012.

The State Department designated TTP as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist on September 1, 2010.

On Tuesday, a security source in Karbala province announced that the security forces have detained the Health Minister of the ISIS organization during his attempt to enter the province.

The source said in an interview for IraqiNews.co, "A force from the Directorate of Intelligence with the cooperation of Counter-terrorism in Karbala arrested the Minister of Health for the terrorist organization northern of the province, while he was trying to enter Karbala from Baghdad."

A security source in Karbala said on December 20, 2014 that, the security force arrested the assistant of ISIS governor of the south when he was trying to enter the province from Anbar province.

#2  YPG and YPJ in Kobane are not reporting every day like in the past. It is believed that the days that they are not reporting progress, are days when ISIS has brought in reinforcements and the Kurds are falling back into the city to allow ISIS to flow in and occupy kill zones. Then coalition aircraft strike the kill zones. The Kurds then move back in to do cleanup sweeps. They are not publicizing this strategy so as not to alert ISIS.

Kill boxes, exactly the correct strategy.

300 volunteers finish training, ready to battle ISIS in Salahuddin
Salahuddin -- The deputy of the security committee in Salahuddin province Khaled al-Khazraji announced Tuesday, that 300 volunteers from the province have finished their training and are now ready to battle ISIS.
All by themselves, apparently...
Al-Khazraji informed IraqiNews, "Iraqi soldiers backed by al-Hashed al-Sha'abi forces have managed to kill 6 elements of the ISIS group, including a senior leader, known as Ahmed Agraf Mazhour, during a security operation in southern Biji," adding that, "300 volunteer fighters from Salahuddin have finished their combat training and are ready to battle ISIS."

Noteworthy, the paramilitary Iraqi Volunteer Forces, known as al-Hashed al-Sha'bi, has opened the door to those who want to volunteer from all districts of Salahuddin province for joining the government ranks and battle against ISIS.

#1  That name seem sort of familiar? In the west, that name is "Saladin", the famous Kurdish moslem general. And he wasn't a typical moder Islamist - he did allow Christians and Jews considerable freedoms compared to the modern bunch of Arabs. For instance, upon the capture of Jerusalem, Saladin summoned the Jews in Askalon that had been ejected by the Crusaders, and invited them to resettle in the city.

This article sounds like the Iraqi Army is trying to borrow a little glory from the Kurds, given the Kurds latest successes militarily - and they even compied the Eagle of Saladin in their banner (the same one the Kurds have use their national symbology)

Suicide kaboom in Samarra kills three
Baghdad -- A suicide bomber killed three militiamen in the Iraqi city of Samarra in the first such attack in the heavily defended pilgrimage centre in months, medical and security sources said on Tuesday. Another 13 people were wounded in the Monday evening attack on a checkpoint outside a school in the city centre that the militiamen were using as a barracks, the sources said.

Militants attacked Samarra during a lightning offensive spearheaded by the militant group in which they captured much of the Iraq heartland north and west of Baghdad last June.

The 2006 bombing of the Al Askari shrine in Samarra by militants of Al Qaeda sparked a brutal sectarian conflict in which tens of thousands of people were killed.

Pilgrims headed to the shrine from Baghdad and the south have come under attack by militants in recent months but the city itself has been largely spared the violence that has rocked other parts of Iraq.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Suspected 'Suicide Bomber' Held in Tripoli, 2 Suspects in Arsal
[AnNahar]. The army on Tuesday jugged

a Lebanese man in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
on suspicion that he was plotting to carry out a suicide kaboom, while two other people were captured in Bekaa's Arsal after trying to cross into its outskirts.

The army said in an official statement that its forces arrested in Tripoli's al-Mankoubeen area the citizen Bassam Hussam Naboush on suspicion that he is a would-be jacket wallah.

The arrest operation comes two days after the double suicide kabooms at a cafe in Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen which killed 9 people and maimed more than 37. The suicide kaboom was carried out by two residents of the al-Mankoubeen area.

The National News Agency had reported in the afternoon that an army force carried out raids in al-Beddawi's Wadi al-Nahle area and entered some houses in search for runaways.

The military forces are still closing all the entrances that lead to Wadi al-Nahle, NNA said.

Al-Beddawi municipal chief Hassam Ghamrawi stressed that the people of a-Beddawi and al-Mankoubeen have nothing to do with the criminal acts.

We are the residents of the same area alongside the people of Jabal Mohsen and their tragedy is ours, he added.

the army announced in the same statement the arrest of the Lebanese Ziad Abdul Karim al-Hujeiri and the Syrian Khaled Abdullah Badran at the Wadi Hmeid checkpoint in Arsal.

They were riding a white Kia with a Syrian license plate while carrying no registration papers.

The two men were arrested after they attempted to infiltrate into Arsal's outskirts after disregarding the instructions of the soldiers at the checkpoint, the statement said.

NNA reported that the troops opened fire in order to arrest them.

Terror Networks
New ISIS video appears to show child executioner killing alleged Russian spies
A horrifying new video released online on Tuesday appears to show ISIS using a young boy to execute a pair of captives the terror group claims are Russian spies.

The slickly-produced video shows two men being interrogated in Russian about their alleged attempt to infiltrate ISIS. One captive, and alleged Kazakh national, states he was ordered to spy on an ISIS leader , while the other confesses to having been sent to assassinate a senior ISIS commander. The video later skips to an outdoor scene where the alleged spies are kneeling in a field before a burly man and a young boy of 10 or less armed with a pistol.

"Allah has gifted the Islamic State's security agency with the apprehension of these two spies," the adult states. "By Allah's grace, they are now in the custody of the lion cubs of the Caliphate."

At that point the young boy steps forward and appears to calmly shoot the two men repeatedly in the head.

ISIS has been known to employ child soldiers, which it calls the "lion cubs of the Caliphate." The video ends with a scene from a previous ISIS propaganda video released in November, showing a training camp for "the next generation" of jihadis. The same boy appears in that video, speaking of his ambitions to grow up to "kill infidels" and identifying himself as "Abdullah" from Kazakhstan.

The U.S. State Department did not immediately return a request for comment about the video. An official with Russia's Federal Security Service declined to comment when asked about the video by Russia media outlet RIA Novosti. The news agency said the Russian embassy in Damascus also had no comment.

A recent study by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) revealed the growing use of children by ISIS both in its propaganda and in military roles, but this is the first such graphic use of a young child in a public execution.
