[IsraelTimes] Over $120,000 confiscated, along with shipping containers full of merchandise, in what the Defense Ministry says was an effort by the terror group to fund operatives.
Israel seized over $120,000 and goods worth hundreds of thousands of shekels last month in what it says was an effort by the Paleostinian terror group Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", to transfer funds from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... to its operatives in the West Bank, the Defense Ministry said Monday.
The confiscations were the result of a joint investigation by the Defense Ministry’s National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing, the Shin Bet security service and the Customs Authority.
The money, totaling $121,402, was confiscated from the bank accounts of four individuals and two companies. In addition, several shipping containers and their contents that had been sent from Turkey to the Ashdod Port were seized, the ministry said.
The Defense Ministry added that this route for Hamas to move money to its operatives was now blocked.
Defense Minister Benny Gantz signed the seizure orders for the money and goods on January 26, but the operation was not announced to the public until Monday. A spokesperson for the minister refused to comment on the timing.
According to the Defense Ministry, the money and goods were being transferred by Hamas through two Ottoman Turkish companies, Sense Sanitary Company and Tikkno Plus Ic Ve Dis.
"These were owned jointly by Hamas operatives Abdallah Fuqaha, who lives in Turkey, and Ayman al-Massri, from the Nablus area," the ministry said.
In addition to Fuqaha and al-Massri, the seizure orders also confiscated funds from Salama Aziz Muhammad Mari and Yussef Taher Mahmoud al-Karem, both from Turkey.
"We will continue to be relentless on terror and track down its infrastructure anywhere it exists — in Israel or beyond," Gantz said, praising the efforts of his ministry, the Shin Bet and the Customs Authority.
[AnNahar] Israel fired several missiles early on Monday targeting areas near the Syrian capital, Damascus, Syria's state news agency reported. An opposition war-monitoring group said the strikes killed nine Iran-backed fighters.
The SANA news agency claimed that Syrian air defenses shot down most of the missiles, which it said were fired from Syria's Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor with a network of activists on the ground, said the strikes hit positions of the Syrian army's Fourth Division in the mountains near the highway that links Damascus with the Lebanese capital of Beirut. It said another strike hit Syrian army positions in Kisweh, just south of Damascus.
The Observatory said that of the nine Iran-backed fighters killed, seven were near the Damascus-Beirut highway and two in Kisweh. Weapons depots were also struck in both areas, it added.
Syria's foreign ministry filed a complaint with the U.N. Security Council and called on the international community to condemn Israel and prevent it from carrying out such attacks in the future.
Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against Iran-linked military targets in Syria over the years but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations.
Israel views Iranian entrenchment on its northern frontier as a red line, and has repeatedly struck Iran-linked facilities and weapons convoys destined for Leb ...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. Monday's strike was the first since Feb. 3, when a Syrian military official said Israel fired surface-to-surface missiles at targets in southern Syria, causing only material damage.
