The US monitor of jihadist groups said late Thursday that the soldiers were killed in three blasts ignited by its fighters near Mount Mghila and that a "spy" was beheaded separately by IS.
The defence ministry announced the losses the same day, saying the soldiers in "a military unit tasked with carrying out a combing operation of Mount Mghila looking for terrorist elements were killed by a mine" explosion.
Mount Mghila, near the border with Algeria, is adjacent to Mount Chaambi, which is considered a hideout for jihadists.
Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi said the incident "will not stop us from pursuing our efforts to fight and defeat terrorism".
IS also said in its al-Naba digital newspaper that jihadists executed a spy for the army on December 20 near Mount Selloum in the Kasserine region, also central Tunisia.
Authorities said at the time that the victim was a 20-year-old man named Oqba al-Dhibi, identified on local radio as a shepherd tending his flock when he was attacked.

[DW] A Sudanese migrant has killed an immigration official in the southern French city of Pau after his asylum request was rejected. The 38-year-old assailant is now in police custody.
A 38-year-old Sudanese migrant stabbed and killed an immigration official in southern La Belle France on Friday after his asylum request was rejected, according to local authorities.
He targeted the 46-year-old director of a center for asylum seekers in the city of Pau, stabbing him repeatedly in the throat.
The alleged assailant has been taken into custody by authorities, according to French media.
"This is a terrible drama, all the more so because the victim spent his entire professional life helping refugees and asylum seekers," Pau mayor Francois Bayrou told La Belle France Bleu radio about the incident.
REQUEST DENIED 'FOR GOOD REASONS'
Bayrou said the suspect had previously spent time in jail. A police source told the news agency Rooters that his prior conviction was for knife crimes.
"The man's asylum request had been rejected, and for good reasons. He then turned against the head of the service, this is extreme and absurd violence," Bayrou said.
Police have not made clear whether the rejected asylum request was the suspect's main motive for the killing.
La Belle France's Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin traveled to the asylum center in Pau, where he met with local officials. He extended his "sincere condolences" to the victim's family and promised the national government's support.
During his address at the center, Darmanin said the suspect had originally arrived in 2015, but his refugee status was denied by the French Office for Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons. Nevertheless, he was given permission by an administrative court to stay in La Belle France, with his residence authorization ending in 2017 due to his knife crimes conviction.
FAR-RIGHT SAYS LA BELLE FRANCE SHOULD SUSPEND MIGRANT RECEPTION IN RESPONSE
Nicolas Meizonnet, a member of Marine Le Pen's far-right National Assembly party, said La Belle France should suspend the reception of migrants colonists in response to the Pau attack.
"The unlimited and indiscriminate reception of migrants colonists leads to unprecented violence," Meizonnet tweeted, adding "we must swiftly suspend the reception of all migrants colonists, this naivety has lasted far too long!"
Immigration will likely play a major role in the upcoming 2022 French presidential election. Le Pen, an immigration hardliner and critic of Islam, will likely be the top challenger to incumbent President Emmanuel Macron.

Selahattin Demirtas, the party's former leader and one of Turkey's most prominent politicians, has been in jail for more than four years.
The HDP has came under renewed pressure this week after 13 captive Turks were found to have been killed by PKK gunnies in a cave in northern Iraq.
State-owned Anadolu news agency said on Friday the Court of Cassation approved a jail sentence of two years and six months against HDP politician Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu over spreading terrorism propaganda.
The ruling means the sentence is final, which could lead to his parliamentary status being revoked.
Another investigation was launched against Gergerlioglu this week after he said on Twitter that the Turks who were killed by the PKK could have survived if the government had made efforts to rescue them.
The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... , has been waging an insurgency in the mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey since 1984 and more than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

[AnNahar] The Internal Security Forces arrested three suspects involved in smuggling people through Tripoli’s al-Abdeh shore area to Cyprus, the ISF said in a statement on Friday.
The statement said two of the suspects are Lebanese nationals while the third is Syrian.
Two of the suspects, one of whom had a gun in his possession, were arrested in the Dinnieh town, while the third was arrested in Akkar’s Bebnine, said the ISF.
All three have admitted to being involved in smuggling around 60 individuals, majority were Syrians, through al-Abdeh shore in return for 2000 dollars per person.
Recently, numerous boatloads of migrants have sailed to Cyprus -- approximately 172 kilometers from Tripoli, Lebanon -- alarming Cypriot authorities that say the island can't handle any more migrants seeking asylum for economic reasons.
Cyprus has come under fire by Human Rights Watch last year for allegedly pushing back migrants and refugees arriving from Lebanon aboard boats without heeding their claims for asylum while in some instances using violence and coercive tactics.
