...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. Renowned politician killed in Mogadishu terror attack
MOGADISHU -- Popular politician and former Puntland Minister was among over a dozen people killed in apparently coordinated terror attack in volatile Mogadishu on Friday, Garowe Online reports.

Late Abdishakur Mire Adan, who has more recently held a post as the Deputy Chairman of Daljir political Party, died in central hotel bombings during Friday prayers according to officials and relatives.
Never heard of him...
Between 2002 and 2013, Adan took on different ministerial posts with the former administrations of the north-eastern state. In 2013, President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole named him as the State Minister for Fisheries in a decree that saw him moved from Information Ministry.

The Editor-in-Chief of Ilays, a weekly newspaper founded by late Adan, Omar Saed Mohamed told GO that the lengthy journalism career of Abdishakur had been spanning since 1982 when he began writing for Somalia’s first ever daily, ‘October Star’.

Adan joined Somali Speaking Pen in 2003, putting his first book, titled ‘The Growth of Somalia Islamists (1952-2002)’ on display.

A few hours before his death, late Adan said on his twitter handle: “We have caravanned; we will be heading to the green pasture, place on which rainy cloud lighting has fallen and suitable for the eyes”.
I think it sounds better in the original Somali...

Puntland forces repel Shaboobs
GALGALA, Somalia -- Puntland Forces repelled an attack by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab militants on their bases along Golis Mountain Ranges on Sunday afternoon, Garowe Online reports.

Army troops commander told GO that Al Shabaab fighters launched raid on their positions: “Al Shabaab group attacked army bases on Galgala mountains from two directions but we successfully pushed them back. One soldier sustained injuries [during the armed confrontations]”.

Earlier on Sunday morning, another soldier suffered wounds after a troop transport vehicle wadded into a minefield laid by Al Shabaab assailants along a feeder road that leads from Garowe-Bossaso highway to the rugged terrain of Galgala.

A week ago, Puntland troops killed five Al Shabaab militants in a pre-emptive raid on Madashoor, 23km west of Galgala.

The move coincides with the sacking of two top security officials- Puntland Intelligence Agency (PIA) Director Abdi Hassan Hussein and Deputy Police commander Mohiyadin Ahmed Aw Musse-in a presidential decree.

Al Shabaab opted for hit-and-run operations, mainly in the Gulf of Aden port city of Bossaso.

Blast near military academy in Sanaa
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A bomb went kaboom! near a military academy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday evening, security sources told Rooters, in a neighborhood that is a main stronghold of Shiite Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
fighters.

It was unclear whether the blast had caused any casualties.

Security in Yemen has frayed since the Houthis formally took power in the capital this month, raising fears of an all-out civil war and of an increase in attacks by radical Sunni snuffies loyal to Al Qaeda.

Bomb explodes near church in Chilean capital
[Iran Press TV] A kaboom has rocked an upmarket neighborhood in the Chilean capital city of Santiago.

According to reports, the bomb went off near a church in Las Condes neighborhood of Santiago at 8:50 am (1150 GMT) on Saturday.

The Chilean police said few people were present at the kaboom site when the incident took place and no one was killed or injured.

No individual or group has grabbed credit for the bombing.

A Chilean prosecutor said those behind the attack should be brought to justice.

"This incident should be investigated and [perpetrators should be] punished. Nothing justifies such a violent act," said prosecutor Raul Guzman.

This was the latest in a string of kabooms that have rocked the Latin American country in the past decade.

Danish Muslims Plan Peace Vigil after Shootings
[AnNahar] A Danish Moslem group Monday said it was planning a peace vigil in the heart of Copenhagen this week to protest against hate crimes after this month's twin attacks in the city.

"We do not accept attacks on people whether your name is Finn, Dan or Aisha," said a statement from Tanwir Ahmad of The Network, which gathers Moslem academics.
A noble thought. Let us hope most sincerely that this lot, unlike the Norwegian bunch, have no history of antisemitism and anti-Zionism. No doubt within two days the internet will have discovered the answer.
"We want to send a signal that we all share responsibility for well-being and security in Copenhagen," he added.
Indeed. Turn in your radicals, please.
The vigil to be held in central City Hall square on Friday was inspired by a similar event on Saturday in Oslo where a group led by young Moslems formed a symbolic ring outside a synagogue, the organizers said.

The Network's announcement was made after Copenhagen police said they had denied a request by Danish Moslem businessman and activist
Oh? What kind of activist?
Niddal El-Jabri to form a symbolic ring outside the city's main synagogue, citing security reasons.

"The security level in Copenhagen is very high, including around the synagogue where there are police who are heavily armed right now," police front man Mads Jensen told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

El-Jabri said he had turned down suggestions to hold the event elsewhere since it risked moving the focus away from Denmark's Jewish community.

"It's about focusing on the fact that the Jewish community shouldn't be used as pawns in the conflict between Israel and Paleostine," he told public broadcaster DR.
I suspect the murderer wasn't concerned about events in the faraway MidEast when he had local infidels to terrorize with terror, so why bring it up?
By contrast, the organizers of Friday's vigil said that they wanted their human chain to focus on all types of hate crimes, not just anti-semitism.

Danish Moslems have reported a rise in anti-Moslem violence and discrimination since the twin attacks in Copenhagen on a free-speech seminar and a synagogue that killed two people, a Jewish man and a filmmaker.

The gunman was identified as Omar El-Hussein, a Dane of Paleostinian origin.
Yep, he's the one who didn't say a word about the Palestinian dilemma while he was killing people. He seemed rather to be objecting to dhimmis fancying themselves free and equal to the Master Religion.
The Danish attacks, which occurred just weeks after gunnies killed 17 people in Gay Paree, raised fears in Nordic countries of heightened tension between religious communities.

Swedish organizers are also planning a "peace ring" human shield outside Stockholm's synagogue on Friday.

Sweden shuts down job seeker service amid ISIS fears
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Swedish government has been forced to shut down a service offering support to newly introduced job seekers after it was discovered that several workers might have been trying to recruit members for ISIS, UK news site MailOnline has reported.

It is claimed the assimilation guides, who were provided by the Swedish state job agency, have been accused of taking bribes from unemployed migrants and making "recruitment attempts to Death Eater fighting groups," the report added.

Now the agency -- Arbetsformedlingen -- has sacked its network of assimilation guides.

"We have received indication that there have been instances of recruitment attempts or contact-making situations related to various Death Eater fighting groups," MailOnline quoted Arbetsformedlingen's general director Mikael Sjöberg, citing Expressen.
"I'm lookin' for a job as an electrician!"
"Have you considered becoming a suicide bomber with the Islamic State?"
"Dunno. What's it pay?"

The scheme was introduced four years ago to help integrate migrant job-seekers into Swedish society by providing a link to their original culture.

The support workers were employed by private companies.

Sweden's intelligence service, Säpo, confirmed it had been alerted to the issue, but was yet to launch an investigation.

Four suspects killed in Lyari 'encounters'
[DAWN] Four suspected gangsters were rubbed out on Sunday in two separate alleged encounters in Lyari, which triggered reaction by alleged gangsters, who hurled three hand-grenades in different parts of the area, wounding eight people, officials said.

They added that Pakistain Rangers, Sindh, had carried out a targeted operation against gangsters in the general area of Bihar Colony in Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....
on Sunday morning where an alleged encounter took place between the Rangers and suspects.

"When the latter resorted to indiscriminate firing, Rangers personnel returned fire, killing two suspects of Lyari gang warfare," said a spokesperson for the paramilitary force.

The dead men were identified as Sohail, alias Khof, and Shahryar, alias Sherry, who were linked with the Baba Ladla group. "The individuals had been involved in numerous murders, group murders, robberies and extortion since 2011," said the official. Weapons were also seized from them.

Hours later, alleged gangsters attacked a shop with a hand-grenade on Al-Falah Road.

Two other hand-grenade attacks also took place in the Kalakot area. These 'grenade or cracker' attacks were in reaction to the killing of the gangsters in which eight people were maimed, said City SSP Fida Hussain. Six of them were discharged after first medical aid but the other two persons received serious injuries, added the officer.

Following the attacks, police and Rangers increased patrolling in parts of Lyari during which an alleged encounter took place with suspects in the Nawalane area of Kalakot. During the exchange of fire, two more suspects were killed. The dead men were identified as Mukhtiar and Arif, alias Mama Punjabi.

"They were linked with the Uzair Baloch group," said the City SSP. He said Mukhtiar was the ringleader of the Uzair Baloch gang after the killing of Maab Baloch in a recent encounter.

They were wanted in armed attacks on armoured personnel carrier in which two coppers were maimed. They were also allegedly involved in the killing of a police officer who was serving in Bahrain.

Female extortionist arrested in Peshawar
[DAWN] A female student allegedly extorting money from people was jugged
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
in the city on Monday, police said.

First-year-student Laila was arrested by police from the Mashokhel area in the outskirts of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
.

Police officials said the alleged extortionist used a voice changer and pretended to be the member of a banned turban group to collect extortion money.

The extortionist threatened people with dire consequences who refused to give her the extortion money, said police officials.

Peshawar police have registered an FIR against the extortionist and have shifted her to central prison -- after court's permission -- to carry out further investigation.

Increased incidents of extortion have been reported from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
, especially Peshawar in the recent past.

Reports from the KP capital indicate that apart from terrorism, extortion and kidnapping for ransom are Peshawar's biggest law and order headaches.

Reportedly, the business community in Peshawar has been 'advised' by the police to arrange for their own security. Criminal gangs, gunnies and Afghan suspects are all believed to be involved in the extortion racket.

So rampant is the menace that many businesses have relocated to relatively safer areas of the country. Politicians, doctors and other professionals have also been targeted by extortionists.

ISIS offers to hand over Kurdish fighters bodies in exchange for $20,000 for each
[IraqiNews.com] On Sunday, a German newspaper stated that the ISIS organization offered to hand over the bodies of Kurdish fighters killed in the fights against it in exchange for 10 to 20 thousand dollars for each body, indicating that this confirms that the organization is facing financial problems.

The German newspaper 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung' wrote in a report followed by IraqiNews, "ISIS has been suffering from financial problems, and it offered to hand over the bodies of Kurdish fighters killed in the fights against it in exchange for money."

The newspaper quoted some security sources, who refused to give out their name, as saying, "The organization seeks to deliver the bodies of those were killed in battles against it to the Kurdish forces, in exchange for sums ranging between 10 and 20 thousand dollars for each body."

The newspaper said that it is unlikely for ISIS to be able to take advantage of these bodies by selling their organs, because it lacks the medical technology and expertise that will allow it to do so.

Iraqis fighting to recapture western town from IS: US
[The Peninsula] About 800 Iraqi forces backed by US warplanes are waging a battle to retake the western town of Al-Baghdadi from Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadists, a US military commander said Monday.

Kurdish militia, meanwhile, rebuffed an attempt by the IS group on Sunday night to recapture an Iraqi town standing on a crucial supply route to the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the commander said.

Lieutenant General James Terry, who oversees the US-led war effort against IS, told news hounds the jihadists had been "halted" across Iraq and that it was now only able to launch smaller-scale attacks.

Terry, who is headquartered in Kuwait, said that while the IS snuffies are under mounting pressure, the Iraqi army was improving.

"The capabilities that we're seeing in the Iraqi security forces are growing," the general said.

"At the same time, what we're not seeing on the part of Daesh (IS) is as important also. We're not seeing those broad counter-offensives" that they staged previously, he said.

Iraqi army and commando units, as well as tribal fighters, were currently carrying out an operation to retake the small town of Al-Baghdadi which IS jihadists had seized about a week ago, according to Terry.

The counter-attack, dubbed "Lion's Revenge," involved "well over 800" Iraqi forces, including mechanised units.

The town is located near the Iraqi army's Al-Asad base, where 300 US troops are stationed to advise and train local forces.

A group of about 20-25 IS fighters -- including several jacket wallahs -- staged an attack on the Asad base this month but the assault was quickly crushed.

- Heavy losses -
Coalition warplanes have carried out about 10 "precision strikes" against IS in recent days to support the Iraqi operation near Al-Baghdadi, Terry said.

"I'm pretty confident that the Iraqis will retake this. I think they have the right forces out there to do it," he said at a briefing at the US Army base of Camp Arifjan in neighbouring Kuwait.

Terry also said the IS jihadists on Sunday night staged an unsuccessful bid to recapture the town of Kaske, which straddles a strategic route to Mosul -- an IS stronghold.

Kurdish forces repulsed the attack backed by US-led aircraft, Terry said.

He said the IS suffered heavy losses, with an estimated 127 fighters killed.

Kurdish forces seized the key stretch of highway linking Mosul to northeastern Syria last month. And the loss of the area has created logistical headaches for the jihadists, Terry said.

Now "what they have to do is travel off-road", he said.

About 3,000 US troops are currently deployed in Iraq, providing advice and training to Iraqi and Kurdish forces.

Terry spoke shortly before taking part in a meeting of top generals and diplomats convened by new US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter to review the state of the war effort against the jihadists.

Four killed in bomb attacks near Hazrat Zeinab shrine in Damascus
[Iran Press TV] At least four people have been killed in two kabooms near the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeinab, Prophet Muhammad's granddaughter, in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

At least 13 other people also sustained injures in the two simultaneous kabooms near the holy shrine in the southern part of Damascus on Monday, Syria's state news agency SANA reported.

The kabooms targeted a security check point located near the shrine, according to the country's police.

"A civilian car had stopped at the checkpoint... and a terrorist got out wearing an explosive vest which he detonated," said the report, adding that after a few moments another individual who was in the car blew it up.

The Britannia-based monitor said the strikes that began on September 23 had killed 1,465 members of ISIL, most of them non-Syrians.

Another 73 fighters from Al-Nusra Front were killed, along with a man from a rebel group being held prisoner by ISIL in the group's de facto capital Raqa.

Four killed in twin suicide bombings south of Damascus
[The Peninsula] Two simultaneous suicide kabooms killed four people and maimed 13 on Monday in southern Damascus near a Shiite shrine, Syria's state news agency SANA reported.

The agency, quoting police, said the twin attack took place at a security checkpoint near the shrine of Sayyida Zeinab, a granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammed.

"A civilian car had stopped at the checkpoint... and a terrorist got out wearing an explosive vest which he detonated," SANA said, adding that seconds later a man who had remained in the car blew it up.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bombing targeted a checkpoint manned by a pro-regime militia, just 10 kilometres (six miles) east of Damascus and on the road to the international airport.

On February 1, a blast destroyed a bus carrying Lebanese Shiite pilgrims in the city, killing at least nine people in an attack claimed by Al-Qaeda's Syrian branch.

At the time, the bus had been heading to Sayyida Zeinab which is controlled by the Syrian army and allied militias.

The Britannia-based Observatory also reported that a rocket hit the Adra prison northeast of Damascus on Monday, killing four people and wounding 15.

It did not say if the casualties were prisoners, guards or visitors.

French Carrier Joins Fight as U.S. Reviews Anti-Jihadist Effort
[AnNahar] A French aircraft carrier launched operations in the Gulf against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group Monday as the new Pentagon chief summoned top generals and diplomats to Kuwait to review war efforts.

Washington forged a coalition of Western and Arab nations to confront IS after the Sunni Moslem myrmidon group seized control of large parts of Syria and Iraq and declared an Islamic "caliphate" last year. The coalition has since carried out more than 2,000 air strikes against the jihadists and La Belle France boosted its participation on Monday with the Chicken of the Sea Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier launching raids from the Gulf.

"This threat, jihadist terrorism, wants to reach our citizens, our interests, our values. La Belle France's response will be total firmness," Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said as he launched operations seven weeks after myrmidon attacks killed 17 people in Gay Paree.

Carrying 12 Rafale and nine Super Etendard fighters, the carrier will spend eight weeks in the Gulf working alongside the USS Carl Vinson, significantly increasing French air capabilities in the region.

- Curbing IS expansion -
La Belle France, along with Australia, is a main contributor to the 32-member coalition effort aside from the United States, which is carrying out the bulk of strikes.

La Belle France and other Western nations are conducting operations over Iraq and several Arab nations are taking part in strikes over Syria.

The campaign aims to support forces in Iraq and Syria, including rebel fighters and Kurdish forces, battling IS on the ground and to hit infrastructure seized by the jihadist group such as oil facilities.

"Air support... for our Iraqi and Kurdish allies has helped curb the territorial expansion of (IS) and stabilise the front lines. This was our first objective and it has been attained," Le Drian said.

#4  @Shipman. Nope. The Rafale is a high-performance fighter. The barely supersonic (Mach 1.3) is the attack aircraft.

BTW while the SuperHornet is able to carry a payload as big as the A6's I wonder what a SuperA6 with a modern powerplant would be able to carry. That and being more able at flying slow.
Posted by: JFM || 02/24/2015 9:22 Comments || Top||

#5  However I admit you have the right to wonder why the CDG is carrying more fighters than attack aircreaft. In fact the Rafales are there for advertising since France has been trying to sell it for twenty years without any success for now. Don't know why since AFAIK it is a fine plane. Perhaps it came at the wrong moment: after the end of cold war and before the "stealth revolution".

#6  @JFM: the superlawndart might be able to carry the same weapons load as the Skypig, but without the many drop tanks it has a very short range. The A6f/g would have had the 5 bomb stations 2 missile pylons and either the -408 version on the J52 or the F404 engines. low and slow and all weather

ISIS opens English-language schools in Syria's Raqqa

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has reportedly opened two English-language schools in Syria's Raqqa, the capital of its so-called caliphate, in an apparent attempt to cater to the families of imported muscle, the Independent newspaper reported on Monday.

The daily referred to activists in Raqqa who had drawn attention to a flier for the "attention [of] English speaking muhajiroon."

The ISIS- emblazoned flier -- which includes contact details and lesson times for two separate facilities, one for boys, the other girls -- claims that "by the grace of Allah we have opened schools for English speaking children."

One activist with the group "Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently" posted an image of the flier online, the daily said.

Abu Ibrahim Raqqawi said the flier offered "teaching to imported muscle' children" in a range of subjects including religious studies according to ISIS' interpretation of Islamic law, English, maths, and "jihadiyyah."

Raqqawi said schools in Raqqa only reopened this month. "[Parents] are so worried that their children will be brainwashed that they mostly keep them at home," he was also quoted as saying.

In an account to The Observer, Raqqawi said teachers, before returning to schools, were made to "denounce themselves for using 'infidel' textbooks in the past," highlighting the troubling state of education in Raqqa.
