Heavy Losses Inflicted on Al-Shabaab Militant Group in Central Somalia
[ShabelleMedia] In a significant development in the ongoing conflict in Somalia, more than 20 fighters from the al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
murderous Moslem group were killed in an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
that targeted their location in Ji’ibow village, located in the central Hiran region.

The operation occurred early on Sunday, dealing a considerable blow to the murderous Moslem group.

According to residents, the turbans suffered severe losses as a result of the airstrike. Throughout the morning following the attack, the turbans were seen collecting dead bodies and tending to their injured comrades. Among the casualties were fighters who were identified as non-Somalis by the villagers. This suggests that the murderous Moslem group might have been drawing recruits from other countries as well.

The al-Shabaab turbans had reportedly been regrouping in the area, possibly in preparation for an ambush somewhere in Hiiraan. The airstrike appears to have disrupted their plans and significantly weakened their capabilities in the region.

This incident follows a series of other recent engagements between the Somali government forces, supported by international partners, and the al-Shabaab murderous Moslems. The murderous Moslem group, which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, has been a major source of instability in Somalia, engaging in violent mostly peaceful attacks and seeking to impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law.

TPLF reaches preliminary agreement with Abiy Ahmed’s party
[Garowe] The Tigray People"s Liberation Front (TPLF) has for the first time reached an agreement with the Property Party which is associated with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, whose two-year dispute with the faction caused a prolonged conflict in Ethiopia.

According to Addis Standard, the Property Party and the TPLF discussed issues giving room for in-depth dialogue involving the two sides as agreed in the Nairobi and Pretoria agreement which effectively ended the conflict in the Horn of Africa nation.

State media reported that the senior representatives of the two sides "have agreed on the principles of party-to-party discussion and have started identifying the agenda for the next discussion."

On April 2nd, the two parties held a decisive meeting in Mekelle, the regional administrative capital of Tigray. This was the first-ever meeting between the two parties in compliance with the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) of November 2022 aimed at addressing the political root causes of the two-year brutal war in the Tigray region.

Adem Farah, Vice President of the Prosperity Party, and other senior party officials including Defense Minister Abraham Belay and Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime attended both the first and second meetings, whereas TPLF is represented by its Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) and joined by two Executive Committees of the party in today"s meeting.

The short muted video released by state media about the meeting does not show if Getachew Reda, President of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA), who was at the first meeting, is attending the second meeting today, the Addis Standard further adds.

Ethiopia’s long-standing conflict has successfully ended, paving the way for development and prosperity. But in recent weeks, Addis Ababa has been at a crossroads with Somalia after it signed a controversial agreement with Somaliland over control of sections of the Red Sea.

So severe has been the conflict leading to serious confrontations with Somalia closing Ethiopia’s embassy while insisting on "respect to our territorial integrity". The international community has called for dialogue to end the hostility between the two countries.

Puntland arrests pirates behind MV Abdullah hijacking incident
[Garowe] At least 8 pirates have been apprehended on the East Coast of Puntland, a Federal state in northeastern Somalia, just moments after a Bangladeshi ship that was hijacked, was released from the hands of the notorious group operating in the country"s waters.

Somalia had struggled with piracy in the last three months with the pirates working closely with Al-Shabaab militants according to multiple sources in the country. There have been deliberate efforts to arrest and prosecute the pirates.

A high-ranking officer from Puntland Police Force informed Garowe Online that they have apprehended 8 members of the pirate group holding the Bangladesh-flagged ship MV Abdullah. It has not been confirmed whether the ransom money paid to the pirates was recovered during the operation.

"The practice of paying ransoms could potentially encourage more pirate attacks,” a Puntland police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, told Garowe Online. The coastline of Puntland has been the target of the pirates for a while.

This development comes amid a decrease in pirate attacks along the Somali coast, thanks in part to significant efforts by Indian naval forces capturing numerous pirates. The Indian Navy arrested several pirates early this month and were subjected to trial far away from Somalia.

Earlier, some reports indicated Somali pirates had released the MV Abdullah after receiving a $5 million ransom, local officials confirm. The Bangladeshi ship with a 23-member crew was hijacked in mid-March but it"s not clear if the pirates were arrested after receiving the ransom.

Puntland Marine Police Force has increased surveillance along the coastline with support from Somalia’s international partners who have been working hard to help defuse piracy in the country. The efforts have to a larger extent stabilised the region.

Al-Shabab group has been taking advantage of the instability in Somalia to work closely with the pirates but their effort has not been fully successful. Somalia is battling the vices as it streamlines its economy to attract more investors.

Israel describes Iran's 350-missile attack as a 'declaration of war' and vows more 'offensive and defensive action' as G7 leaders including Rishi Sunak 'stand ready to take further measures' - but the US WON'T join any retaliation
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Israel has described Iran's unprecedented 350-missile attack as a 'declaration of war' and confirmed it has approved plans for 'offensive and defensive action'.

The country's president Isaac Herzog insisted that Israel did not want a war but suggested they would retaliate after Iran's audacious airstrike early on Sunday.

He said it was 'about time the world faces this empire of evil in Tehran' and makes it clear that its behaviour is 'unacceptable'.

President Herzog told Sky News: 'It's a declaration of war... we are considering all options and I'm quite confident we will take the necessary steps to protect and defend our people.'

Tehran had signalled that an attack was coming in retaliation for an airstrike on its diplomatic compound in Damascus, Syria, that killed two top Iranian generals earlier this month.

IDF Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari accused Iran of trying to 'ignite the Middle East and escalate the region' by firing 60 tonnes of suicide drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and rockets at Israel overnight - but insisted his army was on 'high alert'.

'Over the last two hours, we approved operational plans for both offensive and defensive action,' he told reporters on Sunday. 'We will continue to protect the State of Israel, and together with our partners, we will continue to build a more secure and stable future for the entire Middle East.'

The IDF spokesman said Iran's plan had 'failed' - as he praised the response from the 'regional alliance' which helped down '99 per cent' of the missiles fired. He did not elaborate on the approved plans, but it came after a meeting of Israel's war cabinet.

Leaders of the G7 - including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak - also held talks on Sunday in which they 'unequivocally' condemned Iran's attack on Israel and warned that the risk of an 'uncontrollable regional escalation' must be avoided.

Chronicle: Iran's war against Israel, 14 April 2024
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 23:30 Air attack by Iran on the night of April 14 is a “declaration of war” on Israel. This was stated by the country's President Isaac Herzog. He noted that Israel is now “considering all options” for responding to the attack, but is not looking for war. According to him, the Iranian attack was another example of how Tehran is spreading chaos, terror and instability throughout the world.
It should be noted that in Israel the president is really nothing more than an elected constitutional monarch. All the power resides with the prime minister, so President Herzog ought to be voicing Bibi’s decisions here, not his own. But given that the Biden administration, among others, is being pissy about Prime Minister Netanyahu, it makes sense that the president was tapped to speak out.
13:44 In Iran, two capital airports in Tehran, as well as in cities in the west of the country, stopped operating. The pause in their work will last until 6:00 on Monday, April 15, the ISNA agency reported.

12:12 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Western politicians strongly condemned Iran's massive attack against Israel. They are unanimous that Iran's actions are completely unacceptable and pose the risk of an unprecedented further escalation of the situation in the Middle East.

10:54 Iran’s massive strike on Israel was allegedly “successful” and led to the fulfillment of the goals set by the Iranian command. This statement was made by the Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, IRNA reports. According to him, the strike was concentrated on a “major information center”, as well as on the Nevatim air base, where F-35 aircraft are based. “Both of these centers were largely destroyed and became inactive,” says Bagheri.
It sure looks that way if you mistake a real fire in Chile for an imaginary one in Israel. That’s as bad as posting tweets from wargames based in imaginary Chernarus with the claim that they were taken in Ukraine.
10:22 The US military intercepted dozens of missiles and drones attacking Israel from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen. This statement was made by Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin. He called on Iran to immediately stop further attacks, including by its proxy forces, and reduce tensions.

10:00 The Israel Airports Authority announced the opening of Israeli airspace from 7:30 a.m. the week after the Iranian attack. However, the flight schedule at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv may change. Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon also opened their airspace.

09:00 On the night of the week, Iran fired about 300 drones and a missile at Israel. 99% of them were intercepted. This was announced by the official representative of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.

According to him, Iran launched 170 drones into Israel, and none of them invaded Israeli airspace. Iran also fired 30 cruise missiles, 25 of which were shot down by the Israeli Air Force. In addition, Iran fired 120 ballistic missiles. Some missiles managed to penetrate Israeli defenses and hit the Nevatim airbase in southern Israel. Its infrastructure suffered minor damage, but "capabilities were not blunted."

08:08 US President Joe Biden had a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House press service reported. The American leader announced a meeting of G7 leaders "to coordinate a common diplomatic response to Iran's brazen attack."

05:15 The US Congress will consider a bill to support Israel next week. This was announced by Republican Majority Leader in the House of Representatives Steve Scalise. Perhaps this will be the same bill that also provides for $60 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. Scalise said "additional information... will be provided."

03:05 As a result of Iran's night attack on Israel, 99% of Iranian drones were shot down. This was reported by the Ynet portal with reference to anonymous Israeli officials. They also promised a "strong response to Iran" soon.

At the same time, the Times of Israel, citing a representative of the Israeli defense department, reported that more than a hundred Iranian UAVs were intercepted by the US and British military outside Israeli airspace.

Jordan says it intercepted launched Iranian drones
Good job, guys!
[Regnum] Jordan intercepted drones launched from Iran towards Israel that violated the country's airspace. This was stated in a statement by the Jordanian government on April 14.

“Some objects that entered our airspace last night were intercepted because they posed a threat to our citizens and communities,” the Jordanian government said.

It is noted that several fragments of downed targets fell across the country without causing significant damage.

As Regnum reported, on the night of April 14, Iran launched a massive attack on Israel using more than 200 missiles and attack drones. It lasted at least five hours and was a response to an Israeli military strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus. The Israeli army, in turn, attacked targets of the Shiite organization Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, said that Iran’s operation against Israel has been completed, but the Armed Forces of the republic are ready to act in the future if necessary. He also noted that Iran will respond with redoubled force if Israel takes any actions on Iranian territory.

Iraq and Jordan closed their airspace to aviation amid Iran's missile attacks on Israel.

Sunak said the British Air Force shot down several Iranian drones
British Air Force fighters took part in repelling an Iranian attack on Israel on the night of April 14, said the head of the British government, Rishi Sunak, quoted by Reuters.

“I can confirm that our aircraft did shoot down several Iranian attack drones,” he said.

The British prime minister also noted that if the Iranian attack had been successful, the consequences for regional stability would be difficult to overestimate.

“We support the security of Israel and the region as a whole. Now we need calm to prevail,” he stressed.

As Regnum reported, on the night of April 14, Iran launched a massive attack on Israel using more than 200 missiles and attack drones. The operation, called “True Promise,” lasted at least five hours and was a response to an Israeli military strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the repulsion of an Iranian air attack, promising that the country and the Israeli people will win. The strikes against Israel were Iran's legitimate right to self-defense, said the country's President Ibrahim Raisi, in turn. Iranian authorities also noted that if Israel takes retaliatory measures, Tehran’s new attack will be much larger.

In addition, Iran has threatened the United States that if it intervenes in the conflict between Israel and Iran, American forces in the region will be attacked. The Iranian Foreign Ministry also informed that it had brought to the attention of the US administration that the attack on Israel was limited.

In addition, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassadors of Great Britain, Germany and France due to the irresponsible position of some British, French and German officials.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement after Iran’s attack on Israel, expressed concern about the dangerous escalation of the situation in the Middle East and called on all parties to show restraint. NATO also called for restraint. As the press secretary of the military bloc Farah Dakhlallou noted, events in the region cannot be allowed to get out of control.

Press TV: Iran used seven hypersonic missiles during an attack on Israel
Iran used at least seven hypersonic missiles during attacks on Israel. The Iranian state television channel Press TV reported this on April 14.

It is noted that at least seven hypersonic missiles were used during the attack on the Nevatim airbase. Moreover, according to the channel, not a single one of them was intercepted by “defenseless Israel.”
That’s certainly one perspective…
As Regnum reported, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Tehran informed neighboring states about the upcoming attack on Israel three days before it began.

On the night of April 14, Iran launched a massive attack on Israel using several hundred missiles and attack drones. It was a response to an Israeli military strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus and lasted, according to US authorities, at least five hours.

The strikes against Israel were Iran's legitimate right of self-defense, the country's President Ibrahim Raisi said on April 14. Previously, Iranian authorities also noted that if Israel takes retaliatory measures, Tehran’s new attack will be much larger.

Russian Delusion Watch: Russian news roundup on the Iranian attack on Israel
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
Military experts explained the success of Iran's attack
Are they considered good military experts?
[Regnum] The attack on Israeli targets was successful due to the fact that Iran was able to competently break through the air defense system of this country. Military expert Mikhail Onufrienko expressed this opinion to a Regnum correspondent on April 14.

“Iran launched several hundred Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles in different directions, which overloaded the Israeli air defense system and forced it to expend most of its missiles on them. The second echelon was already moving ballistic missiles with multiple warheads. These are not hypersonic missiles, which Iran does not have in service. The Israeli “Iron Dome” turned out to be unsuitable for intercepting ballistic missiles with multiple warheads under conditions of great physical stress,” the military expert noted.

He added that this "dome" was created to protect against primitive missiles that were used in launches from the Gaza Strip. However, for more modern missiles its permeability has become obvious. This was clear several decades ago, when American Patriot systems tried to shoot down rather primitive Iranian missiles. Then the effectiveness of these systems was estimated at 43%. The Americans tried to interpret these figures, bringing them to 62%, but even in their interpretation, a third of the missiles passed through the air defense system.

Now the situation has changed. It became obvious that cheap drones are able to overload almost any air defense system. There is no air defense system that could completely ensure 100% impenetrability of any zone. Therefore, Israel, which is surrounded by opponents on all sides, should negotiate with them. Otherwise, even with US support, it can be destroyed or damaged to such an extent that it will not be able to function as a militarized state.

In turn, captain 1st rank reserve, military expert Vasily Dandykin pointed out that there were conflicting reports about the course of events. The Israeli side claims that 99% of Iranian missiles and drones were shot down, which is similar to the rhetoric of the Kyiv regime, which also claimed the almost complete destruction of Russian missiles by Ukrainian air defenses, despite the fact that the Russian Armed Forces are effectively hitting Ukrainian targets. The Iranian side claims that there were successful hits on the target.

“Most likely, the ballistic missiles were indeed successful, bypassing Israeli air defenses, which are considered one of the best in the world. The Iranian attack was massive, more than 300 products were used, and not all of them were intercepted by Israel. Even the most modern air defense system can miss the target during a massive attack. Perhaps because of Israeli air defense, Iran's strikes were not as effective as he had hoped. Ballistic missiles had a chance of breaking through Israel’s Iron Dome, since they move at high speed,” explained the military expert.

As Regnum reported, Middle East expert Mais Kurbanov noted that with its massive attack, Iran dispelled the myth about the invincibility of Israel's air defense system.
Fascinating. Do go on.
He stressed that the strikes against Israel were Iran's legitimate right to self-defense. On April 1, Israel destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus with its missile attack. Among the dead were two generals of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) - Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji, and five more representatives of this military formation were also killed in the attack.

As Kurbanov noted, Israel believed that it had the most advanced air defense system in the world. However, Iran achieved its goals; it did not attack civilians. Iran's target was a military base, and it hit it. According to Israeli experts, the Iranian attack cost the Israeli economy about $1.5 billion, and this despite the fact that Iran used less than one percent of its arsenal.
That’s two percent, if the 50% failure rate is consistent across Iran’s entire supply.
Iran launched a massive attack on Israel using more than 200 missiles and attack drones. It lasted at least five hours and was a response to an Israeli military strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus. The Israeli army, in turn, attacked targets of the Shiite organization Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Tehran informed neighboring states about the upcoming attack on Israel three days before it began.

The head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, noted that Iran’s operation against Israel has been completed, but the Armed Forces of the republic are ready to act in the future if necessary.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement after Iran’s attack on Israel, expressed concern about the dangerous escalation of the situation in the Middle East and called on all parties to show restraint. The agency recalled that the Iranian authorities called the attack an exercise of the right to self-defense and a response to the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. Russia strongly condemned the attack on the consulate, but because of the position of the West, the UN Security Council did not do so, the Foreign Ministry emphasized.

NATO calls for restraint after Iran's attack on Israel. Iran's Foreign Ministry has summoned the ambassadors of Britain, Germany and France following a massive attack on Israel.

The American television channel CNN reported that Israel will respond to a massive attack by Iran, but the scale and parameters of the response have not yet been determined.

Orientalist Kurbanov: Iran has dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Israeli air defense
With its massive attack, Iran dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Israel's air defense system. This opinion was expressed to a Regnum correspondent on April 14 by an expert on the Middle East, Mais Kurbanov.

“Many thought that Iran would not respond to an attack by Israel, since the latter has nuclear arsenals and is backed by the United States and Europe. But Iran saw how the Americans left Afghanistan and Iraq. It became clear that they were no longer a force. The Iranian leadership is well aware that if it does not respond to aggression, Israel may take further steps. Iran warned Israel in advance about the response to the attack, thereby giving it the opportunity to prepare for it. As a result of the night operation, Iran checked the operation of its drones, assessed their vulnerability and accuracy of hitting the target,” the orientalist noted.

As the expert noted, Israel believed that it had the most advanced air defense system in the world. However, Iran achieved its goals; it did not attack civilians. Iran's target was a military base, and it hit it. According to Israeli experts, the Iranian attack cost the Israeli economy about $1.5 billion, and this despite the fact that Iran used less than one percent of its arsenal.

Iran has dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Israel's air defense system. Despite the fact that American and European fighter jets were scrambled to counter the drones, the Iranian drones reached their target. Iran has shown that it can give an answer to everyone. Together with Russia, he is taking big steps to create a multipolar world, Kurbanov added.

It lasted at least five hours and was a response to an Israeli military strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus. The Israeli army, in turn, attacked targets of the Shiite organization Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, noted that Iran’s operation against Israel has been completed, but the Armed Forces of the republic are ready to act in the future if necessary.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that Washington is holding back the Middle East conflict, unlike the Ukrainian one, due to possible damage to its own interests. According to him, the death of people in Gaza worsens the prospects of US President Joe Biden in the upcoming elections, and due to the conflict between Israel and Iran, uncertainty is growing.

Russian political scientist, historian, expert on the problems of the Middle East and Central Asia, Semyon Bagdasarov, noted that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decides to retaliate against Iran’s nuclear facilities, Tehran may take more powerful actions against Israel. Iran has significantly more powerful weapons, such as the Kheibar Shekan missiles with a range of 1,450 kilometers and warheads weighing 550 kilograms, he added.

Head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces: if Israel responds, the next attack will be larger
Iran will respond with redoubled force if Israel takes any action on Iranian soil. The head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, announced thisto the Tasnim agency on April 14.

According to him, if Israel responds to the operation that Iran carried out on the night of April 14, then the next response will be much broader and larger-scale.

As noted by the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hossein Salami, Iran's operation against Israel was more successful than expected.

“Our reaction to any aggression from Israel will be more severe,” the Iranian Press TV channel reports his words.

As reported by Regnum news agency, Bagheri previously said that Iran’s operation against Israel has been completed, but the Armed Forces of the republic are ready to act in the future if necessary.

Iraq called Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel legitimate
Iran's attack on Israel is a natural right and a response guaranteed by international law. This was announced on April 14 by the acting speaker of the Iraqi House of Representatives, Mohsen al-Mandalawi.

“The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the attack on its consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus is its natural and legitimate right, guaranteed by international law and laws,” al-Mandalawi said.

… When asked for more details about those strikes, the officials acknowledged that only about half of them were intercepted successfully.

The rest failed in flight and didn't reach their targets, the officials said.
Very good to know.
"So much for the vaunted ballistic-missile capability of Iran," said a U.S. official.

#7  ^ As I understand, the Russians have moved on from their original Persian purchases and are now rolling their own, both large and small.

It looks like Israel & Friends had enough air defense capability to absorb the attack. I wonder what would have happened if Iran was able to competently launch everything they planned.
