Afghanistan
Abdullah escapes assassination attempt
[DAWN] Afghan presidential election front-runner Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
said he had escaped an liquidation attempt Friday when an kaboom hit his campaign motorcade in Kabul, just days ahead of a hotly-contested run-off election.

"A few minutes ago, when we left a campaign rally our convoy was hit by a mine," he told another election rally in quotes broadcast on Afghan television.

He added that some of his guards were mildly maimed, while he was unhurt.

The attempt came ahead of the second-round presidential election on June 14, with Taliban Death Eaters threatening to disrupt the polls.

No one has so far grabbed credit for the attack.

Abdullah fell short of the 50 per cent threshold needed for an outright victory in the April first round and will face former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani in the run-off.

"We condemn the attack on respected presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah," Ghani said on Twitter.

"This is the act of the enemies of Afghanistan to disrupt the democratic process in the country. "

President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
recently outlined the US strategy to end America's longest war, saying that the 32,000-strong US deployment in Afghanistan would be scaled back to around 9,800 by the start of 2015.

Those forces would be halved by the end of 2015 before eventually being reduced to a normal embassy presence with a security assistance component by the end of 2016.

But it relies on Afghanistan signing a long-delayed Bilateral Security Agreement laying out the terms of the US military presence in the country after this year.

The outgoing Karzai refuses to sign the pact, but both Afghan presidential candidates have vowed to sign it if elected.

Sudan Army Says South Kordofan Rebel Base Seized
[An Nahar] Sudanese troops on Friday captured a rebel position in South Kordofan, the military said Friday, as the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
voiced concern for civilians caught in fighting between the two sides.

"At noon today our armed forces liberated al-Atmur region, which is a military base... where the rebels stocked heavy weapons, including cannons and multiple rocket launchers," army front man Sawarmi Khaled Saad told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) rebels used the base to launch mortar attacks on South Kordofan's state capital Kadugli, 45 kilometers (30 miles) away, he said.

The rebels were not immediately available for comment.

Ethnic minority rebels in South Kordofan have been fighting government forces for three years in a largely-hidden war which the United Nations says has affected more than one million people.

In its weekly bulletin, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said civilians continue to bear the brunt of the fighting in South Kordofan "with more people displaced and civilian structures hit in SPLM-N areas."

"Over the past week, 59 bombs were dropped in the immediate vicinity of Kauda," a rebel stronghold, said OCHA, citing reports from international and local aid groups.

"While no civilian casualties were reported, the aerial bombings hit a number of civilian structures, including an office of a local aid organization, a market, an orphans' school, and a former hospital."

Sudan Riot Police Break Up Demo for Detained ex-PM
[An Nahar] Club-wielding police broke up a protest Friday by supporters of nabbed
Please don't kill me!
Sudanese opposition leader Sadiq al-Mahdi, beating up demonstrators, an Agence La Belle France Presse correspondent said.

Mahdi, an ex-premier who heads the opposition Umma Party, was tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
on May 17 for alleged treason after he reportedly accused a counter-insurgency unit, the Rapid Support Forces, of rape and other abuses of civilians in the Darfur region of western Sudan.

Hundreds of youths after weekly Moslem prayers emerged from a mosque in Omdurman, Khartoum's twin city, chanting slogans of support for Mahdi and calling for the fall of the government.

"Sadiq's voice is the voice of the people," and "The people demand the fall of the regime," they chanted, while also blocking off a main road in the city.

Anti-riot police equipped with sticks and clubs gave chase, beating them up and forcing them to flee to side streets, the correspondent said.

The protesters held up banners reading: "No to dialogue with the evil ones."

It was a reference to talks with the ruling National Congress and other parties launched by President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
to try to resolve multiple crises gripping impoverished and war-torn Sudan.

Mahdi's Umma party has pulled out of the talks following his arrest.

He is charged with treason-related offenses and could face a possible death sentence if convicted.

Tripoli Rallies over Rogue General Turn Violent
[An Nahar] Rival rallies in the Libyan capital for and against an anti-jihadist renegade ex-general turned violent on Friday, leaving at least one person injured, witnesses and private television said.

The rival groups gathered in central Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
despite police efforts to keep them apart and skirmishes broke out, with protesters hurling stones and plastic water bottles at each other.

Al-Nabaa television said one man was injured.

Witnesses in the city's Martyrs Square said they also heard gunfire but it was unclear if they were warning shots by police or rounds fired by protesters.

On May 16, former general and longtime U.S. exile Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive in second city Benghazi dubbed "Operation Dignity," aimed at eradicating jihadist "terrorists."

India-Pakistan
Seven militants die in fresh Miramshah infighting
[DAWN] Fresh festivities between the Pak Taliban and a breakaway faction killed at least seven hard boyz in the country's northwest on Friday, officials said.

The fighting erupted in the Wacha Mela area 65 kilometres (40 miles) west of Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
, the capital of North Wazoo tribal district.

Almost 100 hard boyz have been killed since supporters of commander Khalid Mehsud, alias Khan Said Sajna, and the followers of the slain former Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud began fighting in April.

Khalid Mehsud's group last week split from the umbrella Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP).

"The fresh festivities left seven hard boyz dead, five of them belonging to Hakimullah group," a local intelligence official told AFP.

He said at least three rebels were maimed in the festivities.

A myrmidon source also confirmed the festivities and fatalities.

30 BRA men killed in clash with FC: Bugti
[DAWN] At least 30 suspected Baloch bully boyz were killed in a fierce clash with Frontier Corps in Darnjan Nullah area of Sui in Dera Bugti district on Thursday.

Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti at a presser here. He was accompanied by Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani and FC front man Khan Wasey.

A front man for the outlawed Baloch Republican Army (BRA) confirmed the gunbattle and said seven of its fighters and a commander had been killed. He claimed that security forces also suffered severe losses.

#6  'Twas down by Darnjan Nullah, one morning I did stray
A young and handsome rebel I met, and to me he did say
"I've orders from the Babu to dance for the emir,
But how can I appear there, without a nice brassiere?"

"Oh, Abdul chum, please don't be glum, I'll tell you what we'll do
The Frontier Corps dress manly; they'll be no help to you
We'll send a wire to Mahmood to meet at the frontier
And we'll see your chest is bloody well-dressed in Mahmood's red brassiere.

Doctor Mahmood heard the news and donned his pointy shoes
He says this is an urgent case, there is no time to lose
He then put on his stethoscope and on his breast his bra
And he tore off up the pass upon his yellow Yamaha.

But when he got atop the ridge, some rebels he saw there
Old Mahmood knew the game was up, for at him they did stare
He said "I have a permit, to travel to the fort"
"Bollocks to your permit, we want underwire support."

What will my loyal brethren think, when they hear the news
My brassiere has been commandeered, and with my high-heeled shoes!
"We'll give you a receipt for it, in accord with Muslim law
When Balochistan gets freedom, you'll get your lovely bra."

Well we put the bike in motion and filled it to the brim
With Abdul sitting on the bars to show the lacy trim
And Hamid snatched a passing goat and waved his scimitar
And we gave three cheers for the BRA and Doctor Mahmood's bra.

Iraq
Militants seize dozens of students in Ramadi
Dozens of students have been taken hostage after militants stormed a university campus in Iraq. They set upon the site by killing the guards and then blew up a bridge leading to the main gate, according to reports. Gunmen from the al Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group detained the students inside a dormitory. Security forces have now cordoned off the campus.

The attack took place at Anbar University near Ramadi, west of Baghdad.

The attack is the third major operation by militants in three days. It follows an assault on the city of Samarra on Thursday and heavy combat and suicide bombings in northern Iraq on Friday.

Heavy clashes, suicide bombings kill 36 in north Iraq
Heavy fighting between security forces and militants and twin suicide bombings killed 36 people in north Iraq on Friday, as deadly violence shook other parts of the country, AFP reported. Clashes between security forces and militants broke out in several areas of Nineveh provincial capital Mosul on Friday morning and, according to Governor Atheel al-Nujaifi, continued into the night.

In west Mosul, four police, three soldiers and 16 militants were killed in fighting, while a mortar round killed a civilian, police and a medical official said. Three more soldiers were killed clashes with militants in east Mosul, while security forces shot dead five would-be suicide bombers in the Hamam al-Alil area, south of the city.

And two suicide bombers blew up vehicles in Al-Muwaffaqiyah, a village east of Mosul that is populated by members of the minority Shabak community, killing four people and wounding 45, police and medical officials said.

In Baquba, north of Baghdad, shelling and a car bomb killed a total of four people and wounded six, while shelling in the Saba al-Bur area, also north of the capital, killed at least five people and wounded at least 14.

The violence came a day after militants launched a major attack on the city of Samarra, north of Baghdad, occupying multiple neighborhoods. Soldiers, police and tribal fighters backed by helicopters eventually regained control, a senior army officer said, but only after heavy fighting that officials said killed 12 police and dozens of militants.

The areas occupied by militants were however located in eastern Samarra, and they would have had to advance significantly farther to threaten the shrine, which was bombed by extremists in 2006, setting off a bloody sectarian conflict. The allegation itself that the revered shrine was the target has the potential to increase the already-significant sectarian tensions plaguing the country.

Thai police nab terror suspects
Seven suspects have been charged in connection with separatist violence and over the seizure of bomb-making equipment in Yala province. Col Pramote Phrom—in said the suspects were preparing an operation to launch bomb attacks during Ramadan, which starts at the end of the month.

The suspects were arrested yesterday morning, and several items of bomb-making equipment and explosive substances were also confiscated during the raid.

Initial questioning revealed that the suspects had been involved with separatist violence in previous attacks in Yala province. The suspects also confessed that they were making bombs at the time of the raid.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, security forces surrounded a house in Yala's Muang district to arrest several suspects allegedly involved in violent attacks. Bomb-making materials were found and seized from the house.

Also, police are investigating a deadly shooting in Narathiwat's Rangae district yesterday afternoon to confirm whether the murder is connected to southern insurgency.

Azuwee Sayo was gunned down as he was returning home from a mosque to meet his wife. The victim was attacked by two people who approached him on a motorcycle, shot him and then fled the scene.
