[ToloNews] Sources said on Monday that the Afghan government has released at least 170 Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... inmates from the Pul-e-Charkhi jail and that 130 others are expected to be freed on Tuesday.
According to the sources, the released prisoners were imprisoned on charges of membership and cooperation with the Taliban and were sentenced to years of prison.
The announcement on the release of the prisoners was made by President Ghani on the closing day of the grand council on peace earlier in May.
Again on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, Ghani announced the release of 887 prisoners as part of his efforts to persuade the resurgent group to engage in intra-Afghan dialogue to end the conflict through diplomatic settlement.
According to National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib, all the 887 inmates are Taliban prisoners.
Critics have said the decision will have a possible negative impact on the country’s fragile situation and that the decision has been made without wider consultations.
The move comes at a time that diplomacy is taking center stage in the Afghan grinding of the peace processor which has hit constant deadlocks due to persistent denial by the Taliban holy warriors to engage in direct talks with the government in Kabul.

[AlAhram] Egypt’s Court of Cassation upheld on Monday prison sentences for those convicted of committing various criminal offenses during the al-Fath Mosquefestivities in Cairo in August of 2013.
The defendants were charged by the prosecution of murder, attempted murder, desecrating and vandalising the mosque, endangering the public, destruction of public property, obstructing traffic, and possession of firearms and ammunition on 16 and 17 August 2013 at al-Fath Mosque in central Cairo in the aftermath of the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
In September 2017, a Cairo criminal court sentenced 22 of the defendants in the case to life in prison.
The court also sentenced 21 others to life in prison in absentia.
A life sentence carries a term of 25 years in jail per Egyptian law. That doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're twenty when you're sentenced, that means they let you out when you're forty five. I was still alive when I was forty five. I can prove it!
The court had also sentenced 17 people to 15 years imprisonment, 54 others to 10 years, 13 in absentia to 10 years, 88 in absentia to 10 years, 216 to five years, and exonerated 25 others.
Those convicted appealed these verdicts.
Today's Court of Cassation verdicts are final and cannot be appealed.
[AlAhram] Egypt’s Court of Cassation has commuted a death sentence ...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead... against a defendant convicted in the case of the storming of the Kerdasa

The court commuted the death sentence to life in prison following an appeal filed by the defendant.
The court also rejected appeals by three defendants sentenced to life in prison and seven others sentenced to 15 years in the same case.
The prosecution had charged the defendands with premeditated murder, attempted murder, possession of fire arms and ammunition, and attacks on police officers.
Monday’s Court of Cassation verdict comes more than a year after the defendants were handed jail terms by a Giza criminal court in a retrial in May 2018.

[AlAhram] Attackers believed to belong to the Fulani ... a peculiarly brutal tribe of Moslem herdsmen infesting Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and probably other places that are light on law and order and heavy on tribal identity... ethnic group raided a rival Dogon village in central Mali overnight, killing at least 95 people and burning houses to the ground, local and government officials said on Monday.
Violence between Dogon hunters and Fulani herders has killed hundreds since January, including an attack in March in which button men killed more than 150 Fulani, one of the worst acts of bloodshed in Mali's recent history.
Sunday's raid took place in the Sangha district, where Fulanis from the neighbouring Bankass district descended on a Dogon village after dark, Bankass mayor Moulaye Guindo told Rooters on Monday.
"Armed men, apparently Fulani, fired at the population and burnt the village," said Siriam Kanoute, an official for the nearby town of Bandiagara.
Sangha mayor Ali Dolo told Rooters 95 charred bodies had been found so far, but that the corpse count was likely to rise as the village was still ablaze.
"On a population of around 300 inhabitants, only 50 responded to the roll call," said Dolo.
A security ministry front man confirmed the attack, but said the assailants had not been identified. The government later vowed to find those responsible.
"The government of Mali presents its deepest condolences to mourning families and assures all measures will be taken to arrest and punish the authors of this carnage," the communications ministry said in a statement.
It came less than three weeks after nearly 160 members of the Fulani ethnic group were slaughtered by a group identified as Dogon.
A brutal cycle of violence in central Mali, an ethnic mosaic, began after a predominantly Fulani jihadist group led by preacher Amadou Koufa emerged in 2015.
It started targeting the Bambara and Dogon ethnic groups, which in turn started to form "self-defence groups" of their own. The Fulani are primarily cattle breeders and traders, while the Bambara and Dogon are traditionally sedentary farmers.
On May 16, the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) announced it had recorded "at least 488 deaths" in attacks on Fulanis in the central regions of Mopti and Segou since January 2018.
In the bloodiest raid, about 160 Fulani villagers were slaughtered on March 23 at Ogossagou, near the border with Burkina Faso ...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other... , by suspected Dogon hunters.
According to MINUSMA, armed Fulanis had "caused 63 deaths" among civilians in the Mopti region, also since January 2018.
"It's a shock, a tragedy," MINUSMA chief Mahamat Saleh Annadif said of the latest bloodletting, noting that it came at a time "when we are discussing the renewal of the (MINUSMA) mandate."
There are currently about 14,700 troops and police deployed in Mali, which ranks as the most dangerous UN mission, with 125 peacekeepers killed in attacks since deployment in 2013.
Donor countries to MINUSMA are to to meet at the U.N. on Wednesday. A decision on renewing the force's mandate is expected by June 27.
MINUSMA was established after radical Islamist and Tuareg militias seized the north of the country in 2012.
The gunnies were pushed back by French troops in 2013. A peace agreement signed in 2015 by the Bamako government and gangs aimed at restoring stability.
But the accord failed to stop jihadist violence, which then shifted to central Mali, inflaming ancient inter-ethnic hostility.
Koufa in March 2017 joined the newly-formed Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), the leading jihadist alliance in the Sahel region, with links to al-Qaida. Its leader is Iyad Ag Ghaly.

The Malian government is seen as having lost its grip over parts of the country having outsourced the fight against jihadists to vigilante groups with scores to settle.
The Dogon suspect the Fulani of harbouring Islamist Death Eaters, charges the Fulani deny.
French forces intervened in Mali, a former French colony, in 2013 to push back a jihadist advance from the north but the murderous Moslems have since regrouped.

[AlAhram] Swedish police on Monday shot and injured a man at the central station in Malmo, in southern Sweden, after witnesses said he made threats and claimed to be carrying explosives and firearms, law enforcement officials said.
The station in downtown Malmo, a major hub for regional rail traffic, was evacuated in the wake of incident. There were no other injuries reported apart from the man fired upon, who was shot in the legs by a police officer.
"The background and reason for this was that the man exhibited threatening behaviour. He carried two bags which he claimed contained firearms as well as explosives," police official Per-Olof Soyseth told a news conference.
The man, whose identity had yet to be ascertained, was being treated in hospital while the bags he had been carrying were subjected to controlled kabooms by a police bomb squad in the central station, police said.
Soyseth said that while it remained unclear whether the bags had contained any dangerous items, officers at the scene had needed to respond to developments under the assumption that it could be an act of terror.
Malmo police said it was increasing its presence at public places across the sea-side town of just over 300,000 people. Railway traffic to and from the station was suspended due to the ongoing investigation, the regional and national train operators said.
[IsraelTimes] The US Supreme Court has upheld the detention of a Yemeni prisoner held without charge or trial for 17 years at an American military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The top court has refused to take up a petition on behalf of Moath al-Alwi, who was arrested on the Afghan-Pakistain border in December 2001 and transferred to Guantanamo the following January.
The Yemeni national, who was born in 1977, is suspected of having been a body guard of al-Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden ... who doesn't live anywhere anymore... , which he denies. He is considered to be an "enemy combatant," a classification that allows him to be held for the duration of the conflict.
Alwi’s lawyers argued that unlike past conflicts, the war in Afghanistan and against al-Qaeda is of indefinite duration, creating "the risk of lifelong detention for him."
Their arguments did not persuade the court, which gave no reason for rejecting the case.
The prison at Guantanamo was opened in 2001 on a US naval base on the southeastern tip of Cuba to hold the al-Qaeda and Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... fighters captured in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the US.

Citing opposition sources, al-Watan said the negotiations stalled between Turkey and Russia after the latter asked Ankara to hand over the Jabal Shashabo region in northwestern Hama.
In addition to handing over Jabal Shashabo, Turkey would have to withdraw from its observation post in Sher Magher, which was allegedly a major issue for Ankara during the negotiations.
The publication said the goal of the negotiations was to secure the Hmeimim Airport in southwestern Latakia, along with the Christian towns of al-Sqaylabiyeh and Mhardeh in northwestern Hama.
Handing over Jabal Shashabo would be a major blow to the jihadist rebels and the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front ...the Turkic paramilitaries intended to replace with their native jihadi ferocity all the highly trained Turkish soldiers Sultan Erdogan I the much beloved has jailed in the last few years for not worshipping the ground he walks upon. This town is located at the southwestern slope of Idlib’s Jabal al-Zawiya region.
Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and their jihadist allies repeatedly stormed the Syrian Army’s positions at Qasabiyah in a bid to break through the government’s main line of defense.
Despite a brief infiltration into Qasabiyah, the jihadist rebels were unable to score any significant advance at this front.
According to a military source in nearby Mhardeh, the Syrian Arab Army and their allies from the National Defense Forces (NDF) managed to kill several jihadist rebels during the battle at Qasabiyah on Sunday afternoon.
The source added that the Syrian Arab Army and National Defense Forces are shifting their focus to the Tal Malah front, where they are expected to launch another assault to retake this key hilltop from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and Jaish al-Izza.
