Children raped, castrated, thrown into fires in South Sudan: UN
[Al Ahram] Warring forces in South Sudan have carried out horrific crimes against children, including castration, rape and tying them together before slitting their throats, the UN has said.

"Survivors report that boys have been castrated and left to bleed to death... girls as young as eight have been gang raped and murdered," UN children's agency chief Anthony Lake said in a statement released earlier this week.

"Children have been tied together before their attackers slit their throats... others have been thrown into burning buildings."

Tens of thousands are believed to have been killed in the 18-month war, although there is no clear toll. At least 129 children were killed in May in the northern state of Unity, scene of some of heaviest fighting in the civil war, Unicef added.

Civil war began in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of planning a coup, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings across the country that has split the poverty-stricken, landlocked country along ethnic lines.

It has been characterised by ethnic massacres, rape and the use of child soldiers.

Chad says it bombs Boko Haram bases in Nigeria; Nigeria denies it
[Al Ahram] Chad's military said it had carried out air strikes against Boko Haram

by Nigeria.

The air raids caused heavy human and material damage to six of the Islamist bully boys' bases, Chad's military said late on Wednesday, without providing further details.

Nigerian authorities rejected reports that the attacks had taken place on its soil, saying they were likely instead to have been in neighbouring Niger.

"The claim that the Chadian military have conducted air strikes against six terrorist camps in Nigeria is not correct," said military front man Major General Chris Olukolade. In recent weeks Nigeria said Boko Haram had been forced out of most of the areas it once controlled in northern Nigeria.

A few hours after Chad's announcement, Boko Haram bully boyz attacked two villages in neighbouring Niger's southern region of Diffa, security sources said.

The attackers drove into the villages in the Gueskerou area, along the banks of the Komadugu River which separates Niger and Nigeria, in cars and on cycle of violences and shot residents before setting fire to the thatched houses where others were hiding.

"In all, at least 30 were killed. Some of them died when the houses were set alight," said one of the security officials. He said he expected the corpse count to rise as a number of survivors had suffered serious burns.

Home Front: WoT
Jury recommends no extra prison for Marine who killed Iraqi
[Rudaw] CAMP PENDLETON, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, -- A military jury ruled Thursday that a Marine sergeant twice convicted of murdering an Iraqi civilian get no additional prison time beyond the roughly seven years he has already served for the crime.

The decision came just a day after the same jury convicted Lawrence Hutchins III, 31, of unpremeditated murder in the 2006 killing in Hamdania, Iraq, and brought an overnight emotional swing for Hutchins and his family.

"Right now, I think they are ecstatic because he's going home," defense attorney Christopher Oprison said. "Him going home is all that matters. We got a sentence we can live with."

Oprison said Hutchins' 11-year-old daughter had "a tremendous impact" on jurors. Kylie Hutchins told them she lived seven years of "sheer terror" without her father around and said she wanted better for her two younger siblings.

"They don't deserve what I have. They deserve better, and they always will," she said.

The recommendation isn't the final word -- the trial's convening authority, Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., can accept or reduce the sentence in the coming weeks.

Under military law, unpremeditated murder is a lesser charge than premeditated murder.

The jurors also recommended Hutchins get a bad-conduct discharge, which is less serious than a dishonorable discharge, and that his rank be reduced to private.

Hutchins had appealed to the jurors to spare him earlier Thursday, saying that he had "ice in my veins" during the thick of war and that he now regrets what he did.

He spoke haltingly at times and wiped his arms over his eyes during a long, emotional account of his killing of a 52-year-old Iraqi policeman in 2006 in the village of Hamdania.

"If I could go back and do it all over again, I would not have done this," Hutchins told jurors one day after he was convicted a second time in one of the military's longest-running war-crime cases.

The lead prosecutor, Marine Maj. Adam Workman, told jurors the conviction was "not about questioning a Marine's decision in the heat of battle. ... This is about the wholesale abandonment of moral prowess."

"This is not about killing. This is about murder," Workman said.

Another Hutchins attorney, Marine Capt. E.J. Skoczenski acknowledged his client made a "terrible, terrible decision," but said "he's paid his debt to society, he's been rehabilitated, there's no need for any additional punishment."

Hutchins, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, thought he had already won his freedom after two military courts threw out his murder conviction in a 2007 trial because of legal errors, but the Navy was allowed to retry the case.

NE OH man arrested on charges of supporting terrorism
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Sheffield Lake man was arrested by the FBI early Friday on charges that he supported a terrorist organization, the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

According to a news release from the FBI, Amir Said Abdul Rahman Al-Ghazi, 38, first came to the attention of authorities a couple years ago for "violent extremist content" on his Facebook page.

Al-Ghazi changed his name from Robert C. McCollum earlier this year.

"Iraqi police forces with the help of intelligence officers on the ground managed to defuse and dismantle ISIS vehicles rigged with explosives," Maan added.

Cell claiming Hamas ties says it killed Israeli in West Bank
[IsraelTimes] Group asserting responsibility for cold-blooded shooting of Danny Gonen is named after bully boyz who murdered 3 Israeli teens last summer

A Paleostinian group claiming affiliation with Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, took responsibility for a cold-blooded terrorist attack Friday in which an Israeli man was killed and a second injured.

A group calling itself the "Marwan Kawasme and Amer Abu Aysha Squad," named for the two bully boyz who kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers last summer, grabbed credit for the attack near the West Bank settlement of Dolev earlier on Friday. The group said it was affiliated with the armed wing of Hamas and said it lay an ambush in the area and opened fire when it ascertained the two men were Israeli.

Would-be terrorists sentenced to 8 years in prison
[IsraelTimes] East Jerusalem men plotted to dress as ultra-Orthodox Jews and shoot guests at an events hall in 2013

The Jerusalem District Court on Monday locked away
Please don't kill me!
for eight years two East Jerusalem residents convicted of planning a large-scale shooting attack at a popular events hall in the city in 2013.

A third man, an accomplice of the two who backed out at the last minute, was handed down a seven-year sentence. All three, aged 19-21 at the time of their arrest, were convicted of conspiracy to aid an enemy in wartime.

The two criminal masterminds, residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber, planned to disguise themselves as ultra-Orthodox Jews, enter a wedding or other event at Jerusalem's Nof hall in the Bayit Vegan neighborhood concealing firearms beneath their clothes, and then to open fire on the guests.

According to the indictment filed against them last year, the suspects approached a Paleostinian arms dealer in the West Bank, who agreed to sell them two Uzi sub-machine guns for NIS 50,000. The defendants then approached a third man and convinced him to help raise money in order to acquire the weapons.

In December, the three suspects drove to the Nof hall to survey the site. They examined both the main and staff entrances in order to determine the most convenient way to enter the hall, the court indictment stated.

A short while later, one of the three men decided not to take part in the attack, prompting the two remaining suspects to recruit a fourth man.
Whatever happened to the fourth man?

attack on the Kherbet Hamam region on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal, al-Manar TV said.

The jihadists were reportedly plotting to launch an assault on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek.

Hizbullah also destroyed two IS military vehicles, killing several and injuring six jihadists in the attack, including an IS commander known as Abu Akramah al-Zouhouri and another bad boy known as Ahmed Abdel Mohsen, al-Manar added.

Hizbullah has been on the offensive in Syria's Qalamoun mountains for weeks and has captured territory from al-Qaeda's branch in Syria, the Nusra Front. With the Nusra Front almost defeated in the area, a major battle erupted last week between Hizbullah and the IS.

The total area of the Qalamoun mountains that is being contested is about 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) -- of which 340 square kilometers (131 square miles) lie in Leb.

(ISIS) group beheaded three of its own members in the countryside of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, where regime air raids have been trying to push back the myrmidons, an exile monitoring group reported.

It said the three ISIS men were publicly beheaded by sword for "banditry" and "killing a man and throwing him in a well in order to steal his money," the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said. The executions took place in the town of Khasham.

Meanwhile,

regime warplanes and helicopters were continuing raids in and around Deir Ezzor, including its air base, SOHR said, reporting barrel bombs dropped and casualties among the myrmidons.

The monitoring group reported festivities between ISIS and the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in the countryside south of Tal Brak, with casualties on both sides.

ISIS fighters also clashed with YPG and rebel forces in the southern countryside of Tal Abyad and were advancing against the myrmidons, SOHR said.

It reported regime air raids, including barrel bombs, in various parts of northern Aleppo province.
