Afghanistan
3 Spanish cops killed by Afghan police recruit
An Afghan police recruit has shot dead two Spanish police officers and their interpreter in Badghis province, north-western Afghanistan, officials say. The assailant opened fire during a training session in a premeditated attack, according to Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba.

Security forces returned fire and killed the police recruit.

The Taliban says the cadet was working for them, but the militant claims could not be verified.

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville in the capital, Kabul, says hundreds of men attacked the base shouting and throwing stones. Some attempted to scale the walls and shots were also fired, our correspondent says.

The protest has now ended, and a local hospital spokesman said 24 people had been injured - some with bullet wounds.

32 Dead in Mog Hotel Attack Include 6 Somali Lawmakers
[Pak Daily Times] Somali Islamic exemplars disguised as government soldiers went on a shooting rampage in a Mogadishu hotel on Tuesday, killing 32 people including six MPs before blowing themselves up.
Follows up yesterday's story...
The brazen attack by two rebels from the al Qaeda-inspired Shebab movement a stone's throw from the presidential palace marked a new escalation on the second day of clashes in the capital that had already left 29 civilians dead.

"Thirty-two people died in this ambush. Six of them are members of the Somali parliament and four are Somali government civil servants," Deputy Prime Minister Abdirahman Haji Adan Ibbi told reporters.

"The 20 others are innocent bystanders who died in this horrible incident." An AFP reporter who managed to enter the Hotel Mona compound said the doors of every single room and even the toilets had been smashed open by the two attackers.

Officials visiting the scene of the carnage held their noses because of the stench of burned flesh and smoke.

Witnesses and hotel staff said the attackers were wearing government security uniforms and rubbed out security guards at the gate to the compound as they rushed into the three-storey building.

"They rained gunfire on everybody. Nobody stood a chance. I was lucky because they aimed at me but I jumped out of the window and survived," hotel employee Adan Mohamed told AFP.

"People were screaming, there was total panic. When they decided they had finished killing everybody, they climbed to the balcony and started opening fire on government forces outside the hotel," he added.

One government soldier who took part in the fighting and refused to give his name said one of the bombers detonated his boom jacket on the balcony when he saw they were surrounded. "These two guys were on the balcony, close together, shouting holy shit! Allahu Akbar. It seems one of them failed to detonate his vest but the other did and that probably killed both of them," he said.

"One of them was blown to pieces, only the head remains. The other one's body is completely burned, he is all black," the soldier added.

Shabaab front man Sheikh Ali Mohamoud Rage took credit for the attack during a phone press conference.

"Our commando units carried out this attack," he said. The bloodbath at Hotel Mona, which lies in the small area firmly under government control, came on the second day of a deadly battle in the naked city.

The embattled transitional government and the UN condemned the attack.

Spain Paid Al Qaeda More Than 6 Million Euros for Hostages
[PTI] The Spanish government paid out nearly seven million euros to obtain the release of three Spanish aid workers held by Al Qaeda's North African affiliate, El Mundo reported today.

The newspaper said Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) had demanded 3.8 million euros in return for the three hostages seized in Mauritania in November and later held in Mali.

Madrid paid the demand in January, but only 1.5 million euros eventually reached the kidnappers, with the rest siphoned off by intermediaries, the newspaper said.

The Spanish government stumped up further payments of three million euros in April and May, 2.3 million of which went to the kidnappers to meet their full demand for a total of 3.8 million euros while intermediaries took a 770,000 euros slice.

One of the hostages, 39-year-old Alicia Gamez, was freed in March following the initial payment.

Arabia
Somali-American to go on trial in Yemen
[Arab News] An American of Somali descent will go on trial next month over the killing of a Yemeni soldier and the wounding of another during a failed escape attempt from detention, a Yemeni security official said Tuesday.

If convicted, 26-year-old Sharif Mobley of New Jersey could face the death penalty.

Mobley was jugged for suspected links to Al-Qaeda and attempted his escape in March while receiving treatment at a Yemeni hospital for a leg condition.

The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

US officials say Mobley traveled to Yemen more than two years ago with the goal of joining a terror group and that the US government was aware of his potential bad turban ties long before his arrest.

While living in the United States, Mobley passed a criminal background check and worked as a laborer at several nuclear power plants, but there is no indication that his work had any connection to his alleged involvement with terror groups.

Separately, a Yemeni counterterrorism official said Tuesday that authorities have since June deported a total of 25 foreigners, including Americans, for their suspected links to Al-Qaeda.

The official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said all 25 confessed during questioning of making contact with Al-Qaeda's US-born cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki and Christmas Day bombing suspect Omar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

The official did not say how many Americans were among the 25 deported, but that they included citizens of France, Britain and Asian nations he did not identify.

Yemen: Turbans fleeing Loder
[Al Arabiya Latest] Suspected al-Qaeda fighters were fleeing the embattled picturesque city of Loder in southern Yemen following gunbattles and an assault by government forces in which dozens have died, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.
That's some tourist trap ...
In the latest fighting, "four al-Qaeda members were killed while the rest fled after evacuating their injured," a ministry statement said.

"The chiefs of the terrorist elements have started to flee Loder," the ministry said.

Civilians had hurried out of the of the southern city in the restive Abyan province in the wake of an army siege that followed clashes which began on Friday.

An army search of homes where the forces of Evil were barricaded had found a large stash of weapons, including rockets and anti-tank weapons, the ministry said.

At least 33 people, among them 11 soldiers, 19 suspected forces of Evil and three civilians, have been killed since the clashes erupted, according to an AFP count based on official and medical sources.

Authorities said Adel Saleh Hardaba, 27, whom they described as the al-Qaeda second-in-command in Loder, was among the dead.

Witnesses said the fighting had intensified after Sunday night, when an ultimatum to forces of Evil to surrender had expired.

The army had distributed pamphlets urging any civilians left in Loder, which has a population of 80,000, to leave.

"Only gunnies left"
Security officials had told AFP at the weekend that civilians had mostly fled the picturesque city and that "only gunnies are left." Many of the forces of Evil were believed to be foreigners, notably Saudis and Paks.

South Yemen, and Abyan province in particular, is feared to have become a base for al-Qaeda forces of Evil to regroup under the network's local franchise, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

Largely tribal Yemen is the ancestral homeland of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

Yemeni forces have stepped up the hunt for al-Qaeda suspects since AQAP took credit for a failed Christmas airliner bomb plot over Detroit in the United States.

Among the top forces of Evil reportedly hiding in Yemen is Anwar al-Awlaki, a Yemeni-American who has been placed on a U.S. government hit list.

The U.S. government in July said Awlaki was a key AQAP leader, placing him on its list of terrorism supporters, freezing his financial assets and banning any transactions with him.

In April, a U.S. official said President Barack B.O. Obama's administration had authorized the assassination of Awlaki, after American intelligence agencies concluded the cleric was directly involved in anti-U.S. plots.

Yemen, the poorest country of the Arabian Peninsula, is battling a host of other problems, including a Shiite rebellion in the north and a separatist movement in the south.

Reynosa news outlets rarely publish anything about shootings and roadblocks in Reynosa, be it concurrent or after the fact, so citizens must rely on the internet and word of mouth whenever gang actions takes place; and the rest of the world must rely on narco blogs for news aggregations and compilations.

6 die in Chechnya and Dagestan Violence
[Antara] At least six people died in violence in Russia`s mainly Muslim south on Monday and four other bodies were discovered, officials said, amid a growing Islamist insurgency in the region.

Four suspected rebels were killed on Monday evening after they opened fire at a police checkpoint outside Nazran, the main city in Ingushetia, a police spokesman said. "Four suspected rebels were killed in the return fire," he told Reuters.

One of those killed, Ilez Gardanov, is suspected of involvement in a series of car bomb attacks, RIA news agency reported, citing the Federal Security Service, or FSB.

Two people were killed and four other bodies were found in a series of incidents in nearby Dagestan, a local official said.

Both regions are plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars that devastated neighbouring Chechnya in the 1990s. A surge in attacks in recent months has placed Dagestan at the centre of the insurgency.

The attacks in Dagestan come two days after police there shot dead suspected rebel leader Magomed-Ali Vagabov, who Russian authorities say orchestrated twin suicide attacks in Moscow`s metro in March that killed 40 people.

Early on Monday, a car with two men inside exploded while travelling towards Dagestan`s capital Makhachkala, killing one and seriously wounding a second, a police official said on condition of anonymity.

Two bodies were found on Monday in another car destroyed by an explosion near the town of Karabudakhkent, but the timing of the blast was unclear, he said.

One person was shot dead on Monday in the village of Babayurt in an apparent dispute over a forthcoming municipal election, he said.

A border guard and a forestry official were found knifed to death on Monday after going missing early on Sunday. A second border guard was found dead nearby on Sunday.

The deputy mayor of the Dagestani city of Kizlar was hospitalised on Monday after he was shot in the spine, the prosector general`s office said in a statement.

US sanctions target bin Laden's son-in-law
[Al Arabiya] The U.S. Treasury on Tuesday imposed sanctions on the son-in-law of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, saying he was a potential chief financial officer of the terror network.

The U.S. Treasury said it had blacklisted Muhammad Abdallah Hasan Abu-al-Khayr, now a key leader of al-Qaeda's finance section, and froze any of his U.S. assets and prohibited those in the United States from engaging in any transactions with him.

Al-Khayr, could succeed the terror mastermind's one-time treasurer Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, who was recently killed in Pakistan apparently in a U.S. drone strike, the Treasury said in a statement.

"After the death in May of Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, who essentially served as al-Qaeda's chief financial officer, we will continue to work with our allies to target those like al-Khayr who could step into al-Yazid's shoes," said Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey.

"Today's designation by the United States and the United Nations will help to ensure that al-Qaeda remains in severe financial straits," Stuart Levey, Levey said, referring to similar action by a U.N. sanctions committee.

The Treasury Department action freezes any assets al-Khayr has under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits U.S. citizens from engaging in any transactions with him.

Al-Khayr "has transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars for a specific terrorist attack against U.S. interests," the department said in the statement.

"His relationship with al-Qaeda began with military training the terrorist group provided for him in the mid-1990s," the statement added. "Al-Khayr is a son-in-law of Osama bin Laden and has also provided services to bin Laden as a bodyguard."

Al-Khayr appeared on a 2009 list of 85 persons wanted by Saudi Arabia, in part because of his role as an al-Qaeda money man.

He has allegedly transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars "for a specific terrorist attack against U.S. interests."

Al-Khayr also acted for al-Qaeda in a leadership role on its media committee, and has on at least one occasion recruited a member for al-Qaeda, the statement said.

2 killed in Baghdad's violence
(Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and two others maimed in gunfire and bomb attacks in Storied Baghdad on Tuesday, an Interior Ministry source said.

Unidentified gunnies carrying pistols fitted with silencers rubbed out Ahmed Hassan, a member of the quiet city council of Sadr City district when they opened fire on him at his house in Baghdad's Shiite district of Sadr City, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a leader of a government-backed militia group, Sahwa group, was killed when a magnetic bomb attached to his car detonated in Baghdad's southwestern district of Radhwaniyah, the source said.

Also in the capital, two people were maimed in a bomb explosion in Ghazaliyah district in western Baghdad, the source added.

Violence and insecurity still prevail in Iraqi cities as the U. S. military said earlier in the day that its troops have dropped to below 50,000 in Iraq ahead of the August 31 deadline for the U. S. troops to end combat operations and turn to conduct support and training missions.

And the Sunni in the region are very aware of this fact. The Egyptians, especially, do not want to see a Shiite knife pointed at their border.

#2  Typical Islamic shooting skills. Machine guns and grenades and they manage to kill only two (probably bystanders).

#3  the Shiite have access to very heavy weapons thru their sponsors

I doubt the Sunni groups have similar access

Oh, I don't think so. I'm sure Egypt has found a way to get sophisticated weapons to the Sunnis in Lebanon.

Fatah, Hamas reconcile after clash in Lebanese camp
[Ma'an] Fatah and Hamas announced an end to hostilities Tuesday following clashes in a Lebanon refugee camp a day earlier, Lebanese media reported.

The two factions issued a joint statement saying, "Hamas and Fatah insist they should not use violence to resolve their disputes" after the fighting in the Al-Bass refugee camp in Tyre came to an end, NOW Lebanon reported.

Enmity between the two parties in the occupied Palestinian territories led to near-civil war after Hamas' rise to electoral power followed by a takeover of Gaza in June 2007 and the establishment of rival governments in Ramallah and Gaza City.

Egypt has mediated a unity deal, yet to be ratified by Hamas, which cites amendments it hopes to offer for consideration including restructuring the PLO. Fatah, which signed the deal, accused Hamas of stalling.

While the violent infighting subsided in the West Bank and Gaza, each movement has accused the other of carrying out waves of political arrests, which have seen several senior officials detained.

Reports: 3 killed in Beirut clashes
[Ma'an] At least one person was killed in clashes in the Lebanese capital late Tuesday, officials in Beirut said.

The violence was apparently between supporters of the Shia Hezbullies movement and followers of a small Sunni group.

Machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades were used in the fighting, the Qatar-based TV network Al-Jazeera reported.
I can see packing a rod for protection, and God knows if I was in a Paleostinian camp I'd certainly need protection. I can even see the utility of lugging a rifle with me if it's that bad. But packing an RPG or a machine gun is carrying things to an extreme.
"A personal fight between a supporter of Hezbullies and another of Al-Ahbash erupted just after 7 p.m. in Beirut's Burj Abi Haidar neighbourhood and escalated into a firefight in which a supporter of the Hezbullies was killed," an army front man told Agence-France Presse.

"The army has intervened and is trying to restore calm in the area," he said.

#1  The army has intervened and is slaughtering the remaining heretics (rebels, party girls, gas station attendents) for the great god Nasrullah.
